Police Scotland Characterize Calling a Woman “Nice” & Buying Her Dinner as Pre-Cursors to “Sexual Violence”

Police Scotland have released a campaign ad that suggests calling a woman “nice” and buying her dinner are pre-cursors to “sexual violence.”
Yes, really.
The campaign is “hoping to tackle male sexual entitlement” and features several different men describing behavior which supposedly is a gateway to sexual assault.
Such behavior includes calling a girl “doll,” giving a girl a “compliment,” such as “nice” and buying a woman dinner or alcoholic drinks, as well as basic male banter.
The ad then mixes in actual examples of gross behavior, such as sending dick pics, to conflate everything as one.
“I’d ask all men to watch this film – and then encourage your sons, fathers, brothers and friends to do likewise,” tweeted First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon.

In reality, actual rapists and violent criminals are going to give zero fucks about a droopy Twitter campaign ad, and all this will accomplish is the further social engineering of young men to be petrified of forming relationships with women.
Feminists (particularly male feminists who seem particularly excited by this campaign, despite many of them turning out to be actual abusers as the #MeToo saga proved), can’t seem to grasp the fact that predators don’t care about virtue signaling public relations campaigns.
As Mary Wakefield <a href="https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/how-would-making-misogyny-a-hate-crime">writes</a> in the Spectator, after the murder of Sabina Nessa, more men were encouraged to attend a vigil, as if that would do anything to stop men who “fantasise about killing.”
“A considerable part of the population seems to think that what’s needed to safeguard against horrible violent murder is more ‘education’; as if men hurt women because they somehow don’t quite know it’s wrong,” writes Wakefield.
Meanwhile, they made it illegal for women to carry pepper spray in the UK, something that would actually work.
As we highlight in the video below, Facebook also recently demanded that Capcom censor the remake of Resident Evil 4 for VR because it contains “misogynistic” scenes in which the lead male character flirts with a female character and asks for her phone number.
Given this social engineering, is it any surprise that young men are becoming increasingly bewildered about how to form relationships, with many of them joining the growing ranks of the incel movement?

EXCLUSIVE – Vaccinated people accounted for 82% of Covid-19 deaths, 69% of hospitalisations & 54% of cases in September according to official figures

The latest official Public Health data shows that the vaccinated population accounted for over 82% of Covid-19 deaths in September, whilst also accounting for 69% of Covid-19 hospitalisations and 54% of alleged Covid-19 cases from September 11th through to October 8th.
The <a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/9648/21-10-13-covid19-publication_report.pdf">Covid-19 Statistical Report</a> is a weekly report on Covid-19 data published by Public Health Scotland, and the latest update <a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/9648/21-10-13-covid19-publication_report.pdf">published October 13th</a> confirms that things are getting worse for the fully vaccinated population by the week whilst things improve for the not-vaccinated population.
Table 16 of the <a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/9648/21-10-13-covid19-publication_report.pdf">report</a> confirms that the majority of Covid-19 cases were among the not-vaccinated population in the week beginning September 11th 2021, accounting for 13,553 cases. Whilst the fully vaccinated population did not lag far behind recording 12,120 cases. However, in the three weeks since the fully vaccinated have accounted for the majority of cases, with the difference between the not-vaccinated getting larger by the week.
The totals number of cases by vaccination status as confirmed by the above table between September 11th and October 8th 2021 were as follows –
<ul>
<li>Not-vaccinated population = 39,166 cases</li>
<li>Partly vaccinated population = 5,049 cases</li>
<li>Fully-vaccinated population = 40,223 cases</li>
</ul>
This means the vaccinated population accounted for 54% of Covid-19 cases between September 11th and October 8th, whilst the not-vaccinated population accounted for 46%.
However, the difference between the vaccinated and unvaccinated gets much worse when it comes to hospitalisations, with the fully vaccinated now accounting for the majority of Covid-19 hospitalisations since at least July 2021.
The above table shows that the not-vaccinated over-60’s accounted for just 11% of Covid-19 hospitalisations between September 11th and October 8th, whilst the vaccinated over 60’s accounted for 89%.
The totals number of hospitalisations by vaccination status for all age groups between September 11th and October 8th 2021 as confirmed by table 17 of the PHS <a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/9648/21-10-13-covid19-publication_report.pdf">report</a> were as follows –
<ul>
<li>Not-vaccinated population = 868</li>
<li>Partly vaccinated population = 106</li>
<li>Fully vaccinated population = 1850</li>
</ul>
This means the vaccinated population accounted for 69% of Covid-19 hospitalisations between September 11th and October 8th 2021, whilst the not-vaccinated accounted for just 31%.
But yet again the difference between the vaccinated and unvaccinated gets much worse when it comes to deaths allegedly related to Covid-19.
According to table 18 of the Public Health Scotland Covid-19 Statistical Report the number of Covid-19 deaths nearly doubled in the week beginning 11th September from the number of deaths recorded in the week beginning 4th September 2021.
But yet again the vast majority of them were people who had been fully vaccinated.
The totals number of alleged Covid-19 by vaccination status between September 4th and October 1st 2021 as confirmed by table 18 of the PHS <a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/9648/21-10-13-covid19-publication_report.pdf">report</a> were as follows –
<ul>
<li>Not-vaccinated population = 89 deaths</li>
<li>Partly vaccinated population = 18 deaths</li>
<li>Fully vaccinated population = 393 deaths</li>
</ul>
This means the vaccinated population accounted for 82.2% of Covid-19 deaths in September 2021, whilst the not-vaccinated accounted for just 17.8%.
Some people may argue that this is expected if the majority of the population has been vaccinated. Which would be true if official data didn’t show that the number of Covid-19 deaths in September 2021 was 2,172% higher than the number recorded in September 2020.
Between 4th September and 30th September 2020 there were just 22 Covid-19 deaths recorded, whereas between 4th September and 30th September 2021 there were 500 Covid-19 deaths recorded. The difference between the two is that nobody was vaccinated in September 2020, whilst in September 2021 80% of the population were vaccinated.
This not only proves that the Covid-19 injections do no work, it also suggests that they actually make the recipient worse.
The reason deaths were so low in September 2020 is because seasonality was on our side, as it has always been with all respiratory viruses.
The fact that seasonality hasn’t worked in 2021 when we also supposedly had Covid-19 vaccines on our side suggests that the vaccinated population have one very rough winter ahead of them, because we are already seeing the early signs of antibody-dependent-enhancement.

Chaillan, a 37-year-old tech entrepreneur, added that cyber defenses at many government agencies are at “kindergarten level,” and that companies like Google were doing the US a disservice by not working with the military more on AI, since Chinese companies were making a “massive investment” in AI without getting all hung up on the ethics of it all. And while quitting your job because America has already lost the AI race is a bit dramatic, Chaillan isn’t the only one who’s concerned about China’s dominance in this arena.
A growing number of leaders in Washington and Silicon Valley are worried about the US falling behind in the race to AI supremacy. Congressional hearings on the future of AI have been going on <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuY29tbWVyY2Uuc2VuYXRlLmdvdi8yMDE2LzExL2NvbW1lcmNlLWFubm91bmNlcy1maXJzdC1hcnRpZmljaWFsLWludGVsbGlnZW5jZS1oZWFyaW5n/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB7fd58196">since 2016</a>, and Chaillan said he plans to testify in some upcoming ones. Earlier this year, the National Security Commission on AI, a project chaired by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, also boldly declared that China <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuY25iYy5jb20vMjAyMS8wMy8wMi91cy1ub3QtcHJlcGFyZWQtdG8tZGVmZW5kLW9yLWNvbXBldGUtaW4tYWktZXJhLXNheXMtZXJpYy1zY2htaWR0LWdyb3VwLmh0bWw/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB3073e050">is poised to surpass the US</a> as the world’s “AI superpower.” In a statement signed by Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, and Stephen Hawking, among thousands of scientists, the commission said, “AI technology has reached a point where the deployment of such systems is — practically if not legally — feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.”

We can all agree that nobody wants China to invent a real-world version of Skynet, the all-powerful AI that <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cueW91dHViZS5jb20vd2F0Y2g_dj1fV2xzZDltbGppVQ/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB971de2c5">takes over the planet</a> in the Terminator movies. But we don’t want the US to do that either. And what does the finish line in this AI race actually look like? Does the US really want to win at all costs?
For years, pundits have been <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly9mb3JlaWducG9saWN5LmNvbS8yMDE3LzExLzAzL3RoZS1uZXh0LXNwYWNlLXJhY2UtaXMtYXJ0aWZpY2lhbC1pbnRlbGxpZ2VuY2UtYW5kLWFtZXJpY2EtaXMtbG9zaW5nLXRvLWNoaW5hLw/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB2cb6a031">comparing the AI race to the space race</a> — and warning that the US is losing it. It’s a handy analogy, since it helps Americans put current conflicts with countries like China and Russia into the familiar context of the Cold War. Many have argued that we’ve found ourselves <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly9naXptb2RvLmNvbS9tZWV0LXRoZS1uZXctY29sZC13YXItc2FtZS1hcy10aGUtb2xkLWNvbGQtd2FyLTE2NjAzMjgyNzA/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB3bb71c88">in a second Cold War</a> and that the country that wins the AI race will take the throne as the dominant superpower. But the AI revolution isn’t just about fighting wars or geopolitical dominance. What we’re racing to build will transform almost every aspect of our lives, from how we run businesses to how we process information to how we get around.
So it’s imperative that the US is thoughtful about quickly charging into a future filled with autonomous cars, boundless data collection, and full-time surveillance. These are the applications that next-generation AI will enable, and if a small group of powerful tech companies and/or the US military pushes for innovation without <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly9oYnIub3JnLzIwMjEvMDkvYWktcmVndWxhdGlvbi1pcy1jb21pbmc/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dBdfcbc236">putting the proper guard rails in place</a>, this world-changing technology could lead to some grim unintended consequences. President Biden <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cucG9saXRpY28uY29tL25ld3MvMjAyMS8wMy8wMi9jaGluYS11cy1ldXJvcGUtYWktcmVndWxhdGlvbi00NzIxMjA/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB02b5580c">called for the US and Europe to work together</a> on developing new technology responsibly in a February speech at the Munich Security Conference.
“We must shape the rules that will govern the advance of technology and the norms of behavior in cyberspace, artificial intelligence, biotechnology so that they are used to lift people up, not used to pin them down,” Biden said. “We must stand up for the democratic values that make it possible for us to accomplish any of this, pushing back against those who would monopolize and normalize repression.
You could also look to present-day China to see what the near future of a more AI-centric society might look like. As Kai-Fu Lee argues in his book <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYW1hem9uLmNvbS9BSS1TdXBlcnBvd2Vycy1DaGluYS1TaWxpY29uLVZhbGxleS9kcC8xMzI4NTQ2MzlYLz9vdHM9MSZhc2NzdWJ0YWc9W11kdltwXWNqbjNsNHA4dDAwNHZyMXlldGNtM2pkZzlbaV1Udm5UeWtbdV0xW3Rdd1tyXWdvb2dsZS5jb21bZF1EW3pdbSZ0YWc9ZGV2ZWxvcGluZ255bWFn/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dBf2eaa65d">AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order</a>, China has been more aggressive at implementing AI breakthroughs, especially in <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZnQuY29tL2NvbnRlbnQvMmYyOTVhOWUtNWY5Ni0xMWU5LWIyODUtM2FjZDVkNDM1OTll/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB7ee3414a">surveillance and data collection applications</a>, thanks in part to government support and a lack of oversight that’s let some tech companies there leapfrog the competition and dominate entire industries. WeChat and its parent company, Tencent, are perfect examples of this. On WeChat, privacy <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly9mb3VuZGF0aW9uLm1vemlsbGEub3JnL2VuL3ByaXZhY3lub3RpbmNsdWRlZC93ZWNoYXQv/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB582dfcf6">does not seem to be a priority</a>, but the vast quantities of data the app can collect are certainly helpful for training AI.
“Imagine, if you will, that Facebook acquired Visa and Mastercard and integrated everything into the functions, as well as invested money into Amazon and Uber and OpenTable and so on and so forth, and made an ecosystem that once you log into Facebook, all these things are one click away and then you could pay for them with another click,” Lee <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly9ueW1hZy5jb20vZGV2ZWxvcGluZy8yMDE4LzEwL2thaS1mdS1sZWUtc2NvdHQtbWFsY29tc29uLWNoaW5lc2UtZW50cmVwcmVuZXVyc2hpcC1nbG9iYWwtdGVjaC5odG1s/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dBea0e3e1f">told New York magazine</a>. “That is the kind of convenience that WeChat brought about, and its true worth is the gigantic data set of all the user data that goes through it.”
This is the sort of winning-at-all costs approach that appears to give China a leg up in the AI race. China also <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZmhpLm94LmFjLnVrL3dwLWNvbnRlbnQvdXBsb2Fkcy9EZWNpcGhlcmluZ19DaGluYXNfQUktRHJlYW0ucGRm/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dBf5bdf8ba">appears to be playing catch-up</a> when it comes to establishing standards for algorithmic ethics. Just last week, the country <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2NtcC5jb20vdGVjaC9iaWctdGVjaC9hcnRpY2xlLzMxNTA3ODkvY2hpbmVzZS1haS1nZXRzLWV0aGljYWwtZ3VpZGVsaW5lcy1maXJzdC10aW1lLWFsaWduaW5nLWJlaWppbmdzLWdvYWw/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB16a83f9a">issued its first-ever guidelines on AI ethics</a>. The US has long known that algorithms <a href="https://link.vox.com/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudm94LmNvbS9yZWNvZGUvMjAyMC8yLzE4LzIxMTIxMjg2L2FsZ29yaXRobXMtYmlhcy1kaXNjcmltaW5hdGlvbi1mYWNpYWwtcmVjb2duaXRpb24tdHJhbnNwYXJlbmN5/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB809149d3">can be racist or sexist</a>, and the Pentagon adopted its guidelines on ethical AI <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmZW5zZS5nb3YvTmV3cy9SZWxlYXNlcy9SZWxlYXNlL0FydGljbGUvMjA5MTk5Ni9kb2QtYWRvcHRzLWV0aGljYWwtcHJpbmNpcGxlcy1mb3ItYXJ0aWZpY2lhbC1pbnRlbGxpZ2VuY2Uv/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB5280c257">nearly two years ago</a>. And as we’ve learned more recently, the AI that companies like Facebook and YouTube use to serve up content <a href="https://link.vox.com/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudm94LmNvbS9yZWNvZGUvMjIyNTA4OTcvZmFjZWJvb2stZGF0YS1wcml2YWN5LWNvbGxlY3Rpb24tYWxnb3JpdGhtcy1leHRyZW1pc20/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB14e9cdc9">can also be used to radicalize people</a> and undermine democracy. That’s why — especially in the wake of Facebook’s whistleblower scandal that revealed internal research showing that its products <a href="https://link.vox.com/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudm94LmNvbS9yZWNvZGUvMjAyMS8xMC8zLzIyNzA3OTQwL2ZyYW5jZXMtaGF1Z2VuLWZhY2Vib29rLXdoaXN0bGVibG93ZXItNjAtbWludXRlcy10ZWVuLWdpcmxzLWluc3RhZ3JhbSVFMiU4MCU5RA/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB58c7a16a">were harmful to some users, including teenage girls</a> — lawmakers in the US lately seem more interested in talking about <a href="https://link.recode.net/click/25331141.52099/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2FzaGluZ3RvbnBvc3QuY29tL3RlY2hub2xvZ3kvMjAyMS8xMC8xMi9jb25ncmVzcy1yZWd1bGF0ZS1mYWNlYm9vay1hbGdvcml0aG0v/608c6cd77e3ba002de9a4c0dB25cee0cd">how to regulate algorithms</a> than how to beat China in the AI race.
The two things aren’t mutually exclusive, by the way. Chaillan, the former military software chief, has certainly earned his right to an opinion about how quickly the US is developing its cyber defenses and artificially intelligent computers. And now that he’s taking his knowledge of how the Pentagon works to the private sector, he’ll probably make good money addressing his concerns. For the rest of us, the rise of AI shouldn’t feel like a race against China. It’s more like a high-stakes poker game.

When removing a statue actually is antidemocratic

Each spring, activists in Hong Kong <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/politics/article/3131990/hong-kong-activists-clean-pillar-shame-first-tiananmen">wash</a> the <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2020/06/04/hkfp-lens-hong-kong-students-clean-tiananmen-massacre-pillar-of-shame/">“Pillar of Shame”</a> as part of the city’s annual commemoration of the Tiananmen Square massacre. This coming year, there may not be anything left to cleanse.
The University of Hong Kong <a href="https://twitter.com/XinqiSu/status/1446414701143879685?s=20">demanded</a> the removal of the Pillar of Shame, a sculpture that memorializes the pro-democracy demonstrators killed in the Chinese government’s crackdown on June 4, 1989. The statue, created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, was installed on the campus <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2021/10/08/breaking-university-of-hong-kong-orders-removal-of-tiananmen-massacre-statue-after-24-years/">nearly 25 years ago</a>.
Now, the university has threatened to “deal with the Sculpture at such time and in such manner as it thinks fit without further notice,” according to a letter that the law firm representing the university, the US-based Mayer Brown, sent to the now-dissolved group in charge of the statue.
This is not just a small squabble over a sculpture, but another sign of the pressure Beijing is exerting over Hong Kong.
Hong Kong was one place in China where people <a href="https://www.vox.com/2019/6/4/18652104/hong-kong-candlelight-vigil-tiananmen-square-china">could openly honor the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre</a> and continue the legacy of the student-led pro-democracy movement. In mainland China, especially among the younger generations, the history <a href="https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/people-06032021105724.html">is practically erased from public consciousness</a>.
This is what made Hong Kong’s Tiananmen Square commemorations so powerful. They are a direct challenge to Beijing, and why the Chinese government sees memorials like the Pillar of Shame as a threat. This is about trying to scrub the memories of not just Tiananmen Square but also the pro-democracy activism it continues to inspire. And it is an attempt for the Chinese Community Party to suppress resistance in Hong Kong and bring it closer and closer into Beijing’s orbit until there is little difference with mainland China.
The implementation <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/7/2/21309902/china-national-security-law-hong-kong-protests-us-sanctions">of the sweeping national security law in 2020</a> has accelerated that process. In particular, the law — and pandemic restrictions, which banned mass gatherings — curtailed Hongkongers’ ability to honor Tiananmen Square, and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/08/world/asia/hong-kong-tiananmen-square-vigil.html">has put at risk those who organize or participate in such efforts</a>. The Hong Kong Alliance, the group to whom Galschiøt loaned the 26-foot pillar, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/group-behind-hong-kongs-annual-tiananmen-vigil-disbands-amid-probe-2021-09-25/">disbanded in September</a> after its members faced national security charges.
The deadline set for the sculpture’s removal passed, and <a href="https://twitter.com/holmeschan_/status/1448212968986972162?s=20">the statue remains in place</a>, for now, though for how long is unclear. (<a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3152160/typhoon-kompasus-no-8-warning-set-outlast">A typhoon also just walloped Hong Kong</a>.) A spokesperson for the University of Hong Kong said in an emailed statement that HKU is “still seeking legal advice and working with related parties to handle the matter in a legal and reasonable manner.”
Galschiøt, the artist, has retained a lawyer; the sculpture still belongs to him. He told Vox that “for the moment, the next few days, it should be safe.”
He is not hopeful, however, that the statue will remain. “They will remove it because of pressure from the Chinese government, they are afraid of the Chinese government, and they are afraid of the national security law,” he said.
The Pillar of Shame was first displayed in 1997 at the candlelight vigil in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park to commemorate Tiananmen Square. That was right before the 1997 handover, when Great Britain returned Hong Kong to China on July 1 under the promise that Hong Kong’s basic freedoms and rule of law would remain intact for 50 years.
Albert Ho, a former chair of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, which <a href="http://www.ipsnews.net/1997/06/hong-kong-stone-pillar-is-new-symbol-of-freedom-after-handover/">sponsored the statue</a> and organized the annual Tiananmen Square candlelight vigil, told the <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2018/05/05/pillar-shame-history-hong-kongs-harrowing-tribute-tiananmen-massacre-victims/">Hong Kong Free Press in 2018</a> that they wanted the statue shipped to Hong Kong when it was still under British rule. “At that time, we had good reason to believe that this statue would not be allowed to enter after the transition,” <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2018/05/05/pillar-shame-history-hong-kongs-harrowing-tribute-tiananmen-massacre-victims/">he told the outlet</a>.
After the vigil, students themselves <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2018/05/05/pillar-shame-history-hong-kongs-harrowing-tribute-tiananmen-massacre-victims/">hauled it to the HKU campus</a>, where student protesters faced off with police, <a href="http://www.ipsnews.net/1997/06/hong-kong-stone-pillar-is-new-symbol-of-freedom-after-handover/">according to news reports from the time</a>. The students succeeded in bringing the statue onto the campus, but the Hong Kong Alliance and supporters of the sculpture struggled to find a permanent place to display it.
The Pillar of Shame had become an extension of some of the anxiety around Hong Kong’s future under Beijing’s rule, and about the city-state’s basic freedoms. “In Hong Kong it fanned a heated debate about the limits of free speech,” <a href="http://www.aidoh.dk/art_and_events/pos/ukposdok.htm">Galschiøt reflected on his website</a>.
After being featured at a bunch of universities, the statue was ultimately installed at the University of Hong Kong in 1998. In 2008, the statue was <a href="https://www.alamy.com/the-sculpture-pillar-of-shame-after-it-had-been-painted-orange-during-a-demonstration-by-the-pressure-group-the-hong-kong-alliance-in-support-of-the-patriotic-democratic-movement-of-china-to-express-their-concerns-over-human-rights-in-china-at-the-university-of-hong-kong-april-30-2008-the-sculpture-designed-by-danish-artist-jens-galschiot-was-created-to-symbolize-those-who-died-in-the-government-crackdown-in-tiananmen-square-in-beijing-in-1989-reutersrussell-boyce-china-image380234056.html">painted orange</a> to bring attention to the Chinese government’s <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/aug/30/china.athensolympics2004">human rights abuses</a> ahead of the Beijing Summer Olympics.
The statue remained part of the annual commemorations of the Tiananmen Square massacre, with volunteers and activists washing the statue and often laying flowers at its base. It was a minor event compared to the candlelight vigil in Victoria Park, which tens of thousands attended each year. Perry Link, an expert in Chinese literature and culture at the University of California Riverside, who serves on the academic committee of the <a href="https://8964museum.com/">online Tiananmen Square museum</a>, said that Hong Kong’s commemorations stood out.
“No city anywhere in the world has been nearly as attentive and articulate in its aim to remember that massacre and to learn the lessons of it,” he said.
Until, at least, Beijing began its crackdown.
In 2019, on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers attended a candlelight vigil in Victoria Park just as the city <a href="https://www.vox.com/world/2019/8/22/20804294/hong-kong-protests-9-questions">was about to erupt in massive protests against a controversial extradition bill</a> that would have expanded Beijing’s control over the city.
Protesters <a href="https://www.vox.com/world/2019/9/4/20849058/hong-kong-carrie-lam-withdraws-extradition-bill-protests">defeated that bill</a>, but in 2020, pandemic restrictions stifled gatherings for months, pro-democracy demonstrations included. In June 2020, Hong Kong authorities <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/01/world/asia/Hong-kong-Tiananmen-vigil-banned.html">denied organizers a permit to hold the annual vigil</a>, citing social distancing rules. Pro-democracy demonstrators defied those orders <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/tiananmen-anniversary-vigil-hong-kong-china-protests-anthem-bill/2020/06/04/f812da58-a3e1-11ea-898e-b21b9a83f792_story.html">and still gathered in Victoria Park</a>.
But as this was happening, Beijing prepared to impose a sweeping national security law, the culmination of its crackdown on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
The sweeping law targets the crimes of secession, subversion, colluding with foreign powers, and terrorism, all of which are vague and broadly defined and can carry harsh penalties. Simple acts of protest or brandishing pro-democracy slogans could lead to charges of inciting succession. <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2021-hong-kong-national-security-law-arrests/">Since the law was enacted in June 2020</a>, more than 150 people have been arrested under it, including pro-democracy legislators, activists, journalists, and academics, among others. <a href="https://www.vox.com/22554120/hong-kong-national-security-law-tong-ying-kit-trial">One person has been convicted so far.</a>
It has made the Tiananmen Square vigil all but impossible to hold. In June 2021, Hong Kong authorities again <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/hong-kong-police-try-stifle-any-commemoration-tiananmen-crackdown-2021-06-03/">denied the group a permit to meet and closed Victoria Park</a>. Activists still tried to honor the occasion, encouraging people to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/03/tiananmen-june-4-events-china-hong-kong-taiwan-macao-crackdown-covid">“mourn in their own way”</a> and light candles wherever they where. On June 4, the day of the commemoration, Hong Kong authorities arrested one of the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57353803">organizers of the vigil</a> for promoting unauthorized assembly. Since then, she and three other members of the Hong Kong Alliance were arrested under the national security law, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/police-arrest-vice-chairwoman-hong-kong-democracy-group-2021-09-08/">and the group was accused of being “an agent of foreign forces.”</a> In September, the group dissolved for good. (The order sent by Mayer Brown was directed to the Hong Kong Alliance and its former leaders, which added to the confusion.)

But it also showed, once again, the extreme chilling effect of the national security law. A longstanding piece of artwork can be framed as a potential challenge. “Beijing has decided to take over the city, to crack down on it, and to label anything that is anti-Beijing as subversive or, worse, terrorist,” Link said.
He added that even though the charges are ridiculous, it remains “a club that Beijing can use. “And the people in Hong Kong, don’t dare to stand up and say, ‘Wait, this is ridiculous’ in public, because then they’ll be the next ones to be clubbed.”
Galschiøt told Vox the university’s decision to remove his sculpture is also troubling, as an intellectual institution should care about the story of Tiananmen Square and “the intellectual right to talk about what happened in the story, and this is the thing Hong Kong is destroying now.”
It fits with a broader unraveling of academic freedoms in Hong Kong. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/18/world/asia/hong-kong-university-arrests.html">Student leaders have been arrested under the national security law</a>, and university <a href="https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20211007140203859">student unions have also dissolved</a> under the pressure; <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/politics/article/3140882/hong-kong-leader-carrie-lam-very-angry-and-urges-further">HKU cut ties with its student union in July</a>. Professors are concerned they could be terminated or lose tenure for their political opinions, <a href="https://freedomhouse.org/article/hong-kongs-academic-freedom-withers-under-national-security-law">which could run afoul of the law</a>.
Even if the Pillar of Shame stands for now, it looks to be a temporary reprieve. Galschiøt expects to display the statue elsewhere, and there are sister installations of the Pillar of Shame in <a href="http://www.aidoh.dk/new-struct/About-Jens-Galschiot/GB-CV-filer/Page460.htm#:~:text=THE%20PILLAR%20OF%20SHAME-%20Mexico&text=On%20the%20occasion%20of%201st,oppression%20of%20the%20indigenous%20people.">Mexico</a>, <a href="http://www.aidoh.dk/new-struct/About-Jens-Galschiot/GB-CV-filer/Page453.htm#:~:text=THE%20PILLAR%20OF%20SHAME%20-%20Brazil&text=On%2017%20April%202000%20a,Par%C3%A1%20on%2017%20April%201996.">Brazil</a>, and <a href="https://galschiot.com/en/work/pillar-of-shame/2020-pillar-of-shame-at-the-danish-parlement/">Denmark</a>. If it can’t stay in Hong Kong, he hopes, at some point, it ends up back there again.
“It’s still a symbol for the Tiananmen crackdown, and I hope one day we could go back to Hong Kong and put it again there,” Galschiøt said. “It belongs to Hong Kong and belongs to China’s territory.”

Bryan Stevenson on tracing the legacy of American enslavement to mass incarceration

Forgive the spoiler, if you will. But when I walked into the newly expanded and reopened <a href="https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/museum">Legacy Museum</a> in Montgomery, Alabama, the first thing I saw, and heard, were ocean waves, crashing up against the video screens in front of me. The display was a haunting memorial to the kidnapped Africans who did not survive the Middle Passage.
As part of the first chapter of African American history in this nation, seeing that watery grave set the appropriate tone for the museum’s journey through the timeline of Black life in this country, taking visitors from the days of chattel slavery all the way to modern-day evils such as voter suppression and mass incarceration, connecting the dots as it goes.

I first visited the initial Legacy Museum <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/national-lynching-memorial-montgomery-alabama-629262/">back in the spring of 2018</a>. That’s when attorney Bryan Stevenson and his <a href="https://eji.org/">Equal Justice Initiative</a> (EJI) opened it around the corner from their offices in Montgomery, Alabama, at the same time as their <a href="https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/memorial">National Memorial for Peace and Justice</a>. The memorial, with its 800 6-foot blocks of metal displaying the names of lynching victims, remains atop a hill overlooking the Alabama Capitol building. But the original Legacy Museum was too small, it seems, to encapsulate the full horror of American injustice visited upon people who look like Stevenson and me.
On <a href="https://pod.link/voxconversations/episode/77c27191729412ee63fda359cdcc2a69">the most recent episode of Vox Conversations</a>, I spoke with Stevenson — the author of the bestselling memoir <a href="https://justmercy.eji.org/">Just Mercy</a> and the founder and executive director of EJI — about why this exhibit needed a new home, how it complements his legal work on behalf of the wrongfully convicted, and whether museums are the place to strike back against modern efforts to criminalize the teaching of American history.

So first, Bryan, I want to ask you: Why a museum? In your view, why was there a need for the Legacy Museum in 2018, and now a much larger one in 2021?
<h4>Bryan Stevenson</h4>
I think generally in the United States, we’ve done a very poor job of creating cultural spaces that help us understand who we are and how we’ve gotten where we are. And I went to Johannesburg in South Africa, and I saw the <a href="https://www.apartheidmuseum.org/">Apartheid Museum</a> there, and it was powerful to me to see that that nation had created an institution that helped people understand the pain and the suffering and the anguish that apartheid created.
You can’t go 200 meters in <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/21405900/germany-holocaust-atonement-america-slavery-reparations">Berlin</a> without seeing markers and monuments to honor the victims of the Holocaust. There’s a Holocaust memorial in the center of the city. And because of that reckoning, there’s just a different relationship to history in that country than you see in this country. There are no Adolf Hitler statues in Germany. It would be unconscionable for people to try to romanticize that period, because there’s been this reckoning.
In the United States, we haven’t done that. There are no museums that talk honestly in a detailed way about the legacy of slavery. [Author’s note: Except, I’d argue, the Legacy Museum and the Smithsonian’s <a href="https://nmaahc.si.edu/">National Museum of African American History and Culture</a>.] We have the opposite. We actually create <a href="https://www.vox.com/22643789/clint-smith-interview-slavery-book-how-word-passed">plantations that romanticize that antebellum era</a>.

And so, I do believe that we need to create spaces that more honestly address this history. We began that process in 2018, and I was very encouraged by the level of interest that the memorial generated in the first museum, but we felt like we needed to expand it because there was so much more to say. There’s no place in America where you can have an honest exploration of the transatlantic slave trade. We haven’t talked about the violence of slavery, the details around lynching, the anguish and resistance to civil rights, and certainly nothing that’s getting to this contemporary moment of over-incarceration.
And I do think that part of our problem is that we have been so silent, in cultural spaces, about the importance of historical examination and memorialization. We believe the memorialization in America. We have a <a href="https://www.911memorial.org/">9/11 memorial</a>, less than a decade after that incident, so it’s not that we don’t recognize the power of these institutions. We just haven’t created them when it comes to looking at the legacy of slavery and lynching and racial injustice.

I remember back in 2018 when I was driving between Birmingham and Montgomery to cover the opening of the original Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/national-lynching-memorial-montgomery-alabama-629262/">for Rolling Stone</a>. And I noticed this <a href="https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/picture-gallery/news/local/2020/06/17/confederate-markers-monuments-and-flags-montgomery-area/3210461001/image/3210561001/#slide:3210561001">giant Confederate flag along I-65</a> [flown by the Sons of Confederate Veterans] — you know the one I’m talking about.

It reminded me of what you’re talking about. As I put in the piece, we memorialize deliberately.
I remember in Just Mercy you mentioned the Atticus Finch [memorial and the To Kill a] Mockingbird <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-27729570">museum</a>. You know, a museum dedicated to a [white] fictional character who didn’t save his black client (laughing). This memorialization that we do in this country between plantations, Mockingbird museum ... this memorialization of white virtue without regard to Black bodies is epidemic at this point.
<h4>Bryan Stevenson</h4>
Yeah. And it’s a real problem. I think people haven’t appreciated the barriers it creates to progress. And you’re absolutely right, the American South is littered with iconography designed to memorialize and honor the architects and defenders of the Confederacy.
When I moved to Montgomery in the 1980s, this was a city that had 59 markers and memorials to the Confederacy, and you could not find the word slave or slavery or enslavement anywhere in this city. And I still live in the state where <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/nicholasreimann/2021/04/26/state-offices-close-for-confederate-memorial-day-in-alabama-and-mississippi-heres-why-its-still-an-official-holiday-there/?sh=13d5bb0635fe">Confederate Memorial Day</a> is a state holiday, where Jefferson Davis’s birthday is a state holiday. We don’t have Martin Luther King Day in Alabama. We have <a href="https://www.al.com/news/2020/03/alabama-lawmaker-wants-to-separate-martin-luther-king-robert-e-lee-holidays.html">Martin Luther King/Robert E. Lee Day</a>.
That giant Confederate flag is still on Interstate 65, and I don’t think until we address these things, we’re not going to get to the place we need to go — because these are more than just tokens. They are symbols of a false narrative of the virtue of racial hierarchy, of the acceptability of white supremacy.
I think cultural leaders and institutions have, in many ways, been complicit by not creating an honest accounting of this history. And that’s why I do think there’s a lot of work to do in the cultural spaces of America.
