French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Angela Merkel in Paris on Thursday for the last time before the German chancellor stands down, spelling the end of a partnership at the heart of the European Union for the last four years.
Merkel is to relinquish power after German elections on September 26, bringing an end to her 16 years in office that has seen her work with four different French leaders starting with Jacques Chirac.
Macron, 24 years her junior, has never hidden his admiration for Merkel's longevity, but his sometimes abrasive style and pro-European activism has contrasted with the more cautious approach of his German partner.
In 2019, during a rough patch in ties, Merkel admitted the pair "wrestle with each other" and had "differences in mentality", leading Macron to declare that he believed in "productive confrontation".
"They have very different styles," said Alexandre Robinet-Borgomano, an expert on Germany at the French think-tank the Montaigne Institute.
"The chancellor is someone who takes her time, is always looking for compromises, whereas the president is a disruptor, who is prepared to make bold statements about problems he feels are being ignored," he said.
But EU watchers say the two have managed to form an ultimately effective version of the fabled "Franco-German" locomotive that drives the 27-nation European Union.
"Despite their big differences, their cooperation has worked well," Pawel Tokarski from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin told AFP.
And as they spoke to reporters at the Elysee palace before their last scheduled working dinner Thursday, the two leaders were all smiles and charm.
Merkel responded to Macron's "My dear Angela" with "My dear Emmanuel", as they addressed each other with the familiar "Du" and "Tu".
Dinner conversation topics were to range from Afghanistan, climate change and relations with China to EU policy, Merkel said.
"I have no fear of being bored," she said of the evening ahead.
Wrangling
During their time together, the "Merkron" tandem managed crises from Britain's departure from the European Union and Donald Trump's norm-shredding US presidency to the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were differences and friction along the way -- over EU economic policy, Russian gas, Brexit and arms sales -- which were thrashed out in regular phone calls and meetings.
"They are very different, but they both have a methodical character," Europe Minister Clement Beaune, who has witnessed the pair up close since 2017, told AFP. 
They also shared moments of genuine public affection, including at the 2018 ceremony to mark 100 years since the armistice that ended World War I, where they held each other in a symbolic embrace.
- EU success -  
All Franco-German partnerships in Europe are judged by the standards of their illustrious forerunners, from Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer in the post-war era to Francois Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl in the 1980s.
The most significant moment in the Macron-Merkel era came at a gruelling EU summit in July last year when the bloc agreed for the first time to borrow money collectively -- a major step that Germany had long resisted.
Recognising the damage wrought by Covid-19 on the EU economy, Merkel and Macron were the architects of a deal that will see the EU raise 800 billion euros ($950 billion) to be spent around the bloc on infrastructure and new technology.
French officials were jubilant that the pair had succeeded in advancing further than most observers thought possible.
"It was the big European moment of the start of this century," commented Robinet-Borgomano.
He believes the two have "laid the first stones" for a truly sovereign Europe, one capable of -- at some point in the future -- taking care of its own security and acting independently from the United States.
"There are still unresolved problems, like those for the eurozone for example, which is far from being stable," Tokarski said. "This is a legacy that Merkel leaves for her successor."
Merkel said on Thursday she hoped Germany would have a new government soon after the election to avoid a slowdown in ongoing EU reform.
Elections in Germany often lead to protracted coalition talks. In 2017, it took nearly six months before Merkel was finally given another term in office.

Alphabet's Google and Apple have removed jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's tactical voting app from their stores, his team said on Friday, after Russia accused the U.S. tech firms of meddling in its internal affairs.
Russia goes to the polls on Friday to elect a new parliament in a three-day vote that the ruling United Russia party is expected to win despite a ratings slump after the biggest crackdown on the Kremlin's critics in years.
Allies of Navalny, President Vladimir Putin's fiercest domestic opponent, planned to use the mobile app to organise a tactical voting campaign to deal a blow to United Russia.
Russia demanded this month that Apple and Google remove the app from their stores, saying a refusal to do so would be treated as meddling in its parliamentary election.
Apple and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
On Thursday, Russia said official approaches had been made to the two companies' chief executives.
Ivan Zhdanov, a Navalny ally based abroad, said on Friday the removal amounted to political censorship.

Chinese astronauts returned to earth Friday after completing the country's longest-ever crewed mission, the latest landmark in Beijing's drive to become a major space power.
The capsule carrying the three astronauts was suspended on a parachute and landed in the Gobi desert at 1:35 pm local time (05:35 GMT).
The crew of the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft were in "good health" after the 90-day mission, a record duration for China, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Live footage showed medical crew and support staff in a helicopter rush to a landing site in the Gobi desert. One staffer planted the Chinese national flag near the capsule.
The taikonauts -- as Chinese astronauts are known -- will undergo a 14-day quarantine before they can go home "because their immune systems may have weakened after the long mission," Huang Weifen, chief designer of China's manned space project told CCTV.
The mission was part of China's heavily promoted space programme, which has already seen the nation land a rover on Mars and send probes to the moon.
The launch of Beijing's first crewed mission in nearly five years coincided with the 100th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party on July 1, and was the highlight of a massive propaganda campaign.
The crew stayed for 90 days at the Tiangong space station, conducting spacewalks and scientific experiments.
"The successful completion of the mission... paves the way for future regular missions and utlisation of the (Chinese space) station," said Chen Lan, an independent analyst at GoTaikonauts, which specialises in China's space programme.
"It is a very important and very much needed start for the CSS."
Tiangong, meaning "heavenly palace", is expected to operate for at least 10 years.
The mission is headed by Nie Haisheng, a decorated airforce pilot in the People's Liberation Army who previously participated in two space missions.
The two other astronauts, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo, are also in the military.
Space race
The Chinese space agency is planning a total of 11 launches before the end of next year, including three more crewed missions that will deliver two lab modules to expand the 70-tonne station.
China has poured billions of dollars into its military-led space programme in recent years as it tries to catch up with the United States and Russia.
Beijing's space ambitions have been fuelled in part by a US ban on its astronauts on the International Space Station, a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan.
The ISS is due for retirement after 2024, although NASA has said it could potentially remain functional beyond 2028.
"Compared to the US, China is still technically somewhat behind," Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told AFP.
"The main US lead in human spaceflight is in total experience," he said.
"For example, two spacewalks is not the same as hundreds of ISS spacewalks. Quantity makes a difference."

Federal prosecutors are preparing to indict a former Boeing test pilot suspected of misleading aviation regulators over the safety issues blamed for two fatal 737 MAX crashes, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
Mark Forkner was the lead contact between the aviation giant and the United States' Federal Aviation Administration over how pilots should be trained to fly the planes, the Journal said.
According to documents published in early 2020, Forkner withheld details about the planes' faulty flight handling system known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS -- later blamed for both crashes -- from regulators.
The 737 MAX was formally certified in March 2017, but was grounded worldwide for 20 months following two crashes in October 2018 and March 2019 that killed 346 people.
The MAX was allowed to fly again at the end of 2020, once the MCAS software was modified.
Boeing has acknowledged its responsibility in misleading regulators and agreed to pay more than $2.5 billion dollars to settle certain lawsuits.
Neither the US Justice Department nor Forkner's lawyer responded to requests for comment.
The Wall Street Journal said it was not clear what charges Forkner would face.

Colin Huang, the founder of Chinese e-commerce platform Pinduoduo Inc, has lost more wealth this year than anyone else in the world.
Huang's fortune has dropped by more than $27 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, after the company's stock plunged as China cracked down on its internet giants. That's the biggest decline among the 500 members of the index, much larger even than the roughly $16 billion lost by China Evergrande Group Chairman Hui Ka Yan, whose real estate empire is strugglingunder a pile of debt.
It's the starkest example of how the tide has turned for China's billionaire class as President Xi Jinping calls for "common prosperity" and reins in the country's private-sector companies. Shares of Pinduoduo, or PDD, have fallen more this year than either Alibaba Group Holding Ltd or Tencent Holdings Ltd.
PDD is "more vulnerable to the crackdown compared to those peers with mature and profitable models" like Alibaba and Tencent, said Kenny Ng, a securities strategist at Everbright Sun Hung Kai Co in Hong Kong. "That's the main reason for the stock performance lagging behind other tech companies."
A representative for PDD didn't respond to requests for comment.
Pinduoduo's American depositary receipts have dropped 44% this year, compared with a 33% decline for Alibaba's ADRs. Tencent's shares have slid 20% this year in Hong Kong.
Huang, who owns 28% of PDD, founded the company in 2015 and quickly built it into an e-commerce giant by pioneering community buying. PDD's annual active users climbed to 788 million in December, exceeding the 779 million users at Alibaba's online marketplaces.
The company's market value reached a peak of $178 billion before falling to about $125 billion. It reported its first quarterly net profit as a public company last month.
Huang, who's now worth about $35 billion, quit his role as chief executive officer last year and stepped down as chairman in March.
PDD is among the tech giants that have been pledging current and future corporate profits to invest in philanthropy projects amid President Xi's campaign to close China's wealth gap. It said last month it would allocate $1.5 billion in earnings to help the development of agriculture in the country. Before that, Huang and PDD's founding team also gave $2.4 billion in the company's shares to a charitable trust last year.
Of the 10 billionaires with the biggest net worth declines this year, six are from China, according to the Bloomberg index. They include Zhong Shanshan, the chairman of bottled water company Nongfu Spring Co, who has lost $18 billion, Hui of the besieged developer Evergrande, and Tencent's Pony Ma, whose fortune has dropped by more than $10 billion.
Apart from those six, Jack Ma, the co-founder of Alibaba, has shed $6.9 billion in wealth this year.

As the <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2020/04/27/christopher-steele-dossier-alfa-bank-perkins-coie/">Daily Caller</a> noted in April 2020, Sussmann “set off a chain of events that led to Steele publishing a Sept. 14, 2016 memo accusing the founders of the bank, Alfa Bank, of having “illicit” ties to Vladimir Putin,” before meeting with former UK spy Christopher Steele of bullshit ‘dossier’ infamy.

A week after Steele wrote that memo, he had another meeting with Sussmann’s colleague, <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2017/10/24/flashback-lawyer-linked-to-dossier-cried-about-secret-russian-connection/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Marc Elias</a>, according to the transcript.
Steele disclosed the previously unreported meetings with Sussmann and Elias during testimony in a defamation lawsuit filed against him by the Alfa Bank founders, the transcript shows.
Steele’s testimony about Sussmann and Elias provides insight into how deeply involved the two lawyers were in the Trump investigation, and suggests they helped shape Steele’s investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election. -DCNF

“I’m very clear is that the first person that ever mentioned the Trump server issue, Alfa server issue, was Mr. Sussman [sic],” Steele told Allfa Bank lawyer Hugh Tomlinson according to a March 2020 transcript. Steele then said that Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson instructed him to write a report about Alfa bank based on Sussmann’s fabrication.
“I was given the instruction sometime after that meeting by Mr. Simpson,” said Steele, adding that Simpson’s instruction “was absolutely, definitely linked to the server issue.”
As the Caller further noted at the time, “Sussmann shopped the allegations about the Alfa Bank computer servers around to others besides Steele, including to journalists and the FBI’s top lawyer.”
