Johannesburg:
The BRICS countries have agreed not to recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan until they receive assurances that the Taliban will comply with the prescripts of international law, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said Friday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a virtual summit of the five-nation grouping. The 13th BRICS summit was also attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro.
"We had a BRICS Summit (on Thursday) in which our president spoke, and we've adopted a statement - that is a BRICS statement - very clearly articulating the view that we want to see the restoration of democracy and enjoyment of fundamental human rights by the people of Afghanistan," Minister of International Relations Naledi Pandor told a South Africa radio station.
The BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) brings together five of the world's largest developing countries, representing 41% of the global population, 24% of the global GDP and 16% of the global trade.
"Until we are assured that the government, once it's in place, intends to observe the prescripts of international law, we wouldn't proceed with any form of recognition," Ms Pandor said.
The minister also explained why South Africa refused to accept Afghan refugees as an interim stop while their immigration permits to the US were processed.
"We received a rather odd set of letters from South Africa-based lawyers, asking that we receive two airplane loads of persons who had sought refuge in Pakistan but would be transported to South Africa in order for US authorities to vet them in South Africa because some of them would be given the special immigration permit by the United States.
"Firstly, we're not a vetting base; and secondly, if these are refugees and they would have gone to Pakistan, which is a safe country, there is no international law requirement that they must proceed to a third country," Ms Pandor said.
She said in terms of practice, the first engagement would be to seek asylum in Pakistan, which they have done; and if Pakistan wants South Africa to help in any way, it would not be through a law firm in South Africa that represents the government, but the government itself.
"When we contacted the government of Pakistan about this, they knew nothing of this," Ms Pandor said.
The minister also said that the withdrawal of the US Army from Afghanistan as the Taliban rapidly took over all areas of the country was "exceptionally badly handled", placing the country's security at risk.
"I believe, as with much of the world, that the process wasn't handled very well. I think there should have been a far smoother process of particularly the evacuation of persons that the US had promised they would evacuate from that country. So, I think the management was rather of concern," she said.
The foreign minister described the fall of the Afghan government as "very surprising".
"The army couldn't hold out, so security was not able to be provided for the people of Afghanistan. So the whole situation really can be described as exceptionally badly managed," she said.
The Taliban swept through Afghanistan last month, seizing control of almost all key towns and cities as the United States began withdrawing its forces from May 1.
On August 15, the capital city Kabul fell to the Taliban, even as a large number of Afghans attempted in vain to flee the war-torn nation.
The foreign minister also said the authorities in the UK were continuing to remove South Africa from the red list for visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"I think it's unwarranted as South Africa has made really good progress through this third wave and I think South Africa's health system has shown that we are able to cope with the challenge. We have sufficient measures in place.
"We are conveying this to our counterparts in the UK and we hope that very soon sense will prevail," Ms Pandor said.

Kabul:
A sharp increase in violence against journalists has been reported in Afghanistan and in the past two days with dozens of cases of violence against reporters, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) - an international non-profit and non-governmental organization - said.
RSF's Afghanistan desk head Reza Moini said that the Taliban detained 24 journalists in 48 hours. However, they were later released, TOLOnews reported Thursday.
Afghanistan's Etilaatroz newspaper in Kabul said the Taliban had detained five of its reporters on Wednesday while they were covering a women's protest.
Etilaatroz added that the two reporters who were detained during the protest were beaten by the Taliban and have been hospitalised, according to TOLOnews.
The Taliban accepted that such incidents had occurred and vowed to prevent such activities in the future.
Anaamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban's cultural commission, said, "We are regretful of the reporters becoming victims over the past few days. We tried to address their challenges. If they were transferred to a safe place by the Mujahideen, which was interpreted as being detained, we will also work on this and try to see they are treated properly."
Press freedom organisations have raised concerns over such incidents and called for the end of violence against journalists in Afghanistan.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday urged the international community to adopt a "new positive approach" towards Afghanistan, warning that isolating the country will have "serious consequences" for the Afghan people, the region and the world at large.
Mr Qureshi made the comments during a joint press conference along with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, who arrived in Islamabad on Friday to discuss the latest Afghan situation.
The two leaders held delegation-level talks in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of their media interaction.
"Isolating Afghanistan will have serious consequences and will not be helpful for the Afghan people, the region and the world at large," said Qureshi, adding that the policy of intimidation, pressure and coercion did not work.
"We have to adopt a new positive approach regarding Afghanistan," he said.
He urged the international community to recognise the new reality in Afghanistan and engage with the Taliban for the sake of peace.
Qureshi urged the world to focus on averting the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and expressed satisfaction that a conference was to take place in Geneva to raise funds for the country.
He said Pakistan was contributing towards the improvement of the situation in Afghanistan and sent an aircraft on September 9 with food and medicine supplies and promised to extend more humanitarian assistance through air and land routes.
Qureshi reiterated his call to the international community to take steps to avert economic collapse of Afghanistan, which can be done by making available the resources and promoting economic activities.
He suggested the decision of freezing Afghan funds will not be helpful and be revisited.
Talking about the international commercial flight from Kabul to Doha on Thursday, he said this safe passage was in sync with the demand of the Europeans and "we need to encourage the Taliban to stay on course".
Qureshi also regretted that the "spoilers" did not allow the intra-Afghan dialogue to reach a conclusion, saying if there had been progress on talks among various Afghan groups, things would have been calmer.
Qureshi said there were great opportunities for bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Spain in different fields. Given the changed security situation in Pakistan, he urged the Spanish counterpart to review the travel advisory.

Jimmy Kimmel returned to the airwaves last night to amplify the debunked claim that poison control centers are reporting huge ‘spikes’ in calls from people taking ivermectin, despite the Associated Press having to publish a retraction admitting that this is not true.
“People are still taking this ivermectin, you know the poison control centers have seen this spike in calls from people taking this livestock medicine to fight the coronavirus, but they won’t take the vaccine which is crazy,” said Kimmel.
The comedian went on to chide people taking the drug for distrusting pharmaceutical companies, noting that it is sold by Merck.
“It’s like if you’re a vegan and you’re like, ‘No, I don’t want a hamburger. Give me that can of Alpo instead,” joked Kimmel.
“I leave you people alone for two months and you start taking horse worm medicine?” Kimmel said, adding “What a weird summer.”
The joke might have made sense if it wasn’t based on a manifestly provable piece of fake news.

As we <a href="https://summit.news/2021/09/08/ap-forced-to-issue-correction-on-fake-news-about-ivermectin/">highlighted</a> earlier, the Associated Press was forced to retract its claim that 70 per cent of calls to the Mississippi Poison Control Center were about people ingesting ivermectin to treat COVID-19.
The actual figure was 2 per cent.
Rolling Stone Magazine was also humiliated after claiming that so many patients “overdosing” on ivermectin that Oklahoma hospitals were being “overwhelmed” and gunshot victims were going untreated.
The Northeastern Hospital System Sequoyah subsequently issued a statement clarifying that it “has not treated any patients due to complications related to taking ivermectin,” which “includes not treating any patients for ivermectin overdose.”
Maybe Kimmel’s team of writers should have alerted him to all of this before the show last night.
Kimmel e went on to joke that dumb Americans were depriving horses of the medication, deliberately omitting that there is a human version of the drug.
The controversy flared up again after podcast host Joe Rogan said ivermectin was one of the drugs he took to successfully recover from COVID, leading leftists to charge Rogan with pushing “misinformation” and encouraging others to take “horse dewormer.”
That prompted Rogan to point out that he was prescribed the drug by actual doctors.

Elsewhere in his monologue, Kimmel also attacked radio host Alex Jones for promoting ivermectin and taking it on air, remarking, “I’ve never seen someone that mad drink a Topo Chico before.”

Former FDA head and current Pfizer board member Scott Gottlieb reacted to <a href="https://summit.news/2021/09/09/video-rand-paul-calls-for-five-years-in-jail-for-fauci-lying-to-congress/">further revelations</a> this week regarding the funding of dangerous gain of function research by Anthony Fauci, noting that a previously unknown fact has emerged that lab tampering was undertaken on MERS-like coronaviruses, which are even deadlier than their SARS-like relatives.
Gottlieb noted that documents obtained under the FOIA also show that the viruses were made more deadly to humans in several labs around Wuhan, including a level three biocontainment facility, which has lesser security that the level four labs previously mentioned in relation to the outbreak.
“Whether or not this was gain-of-function is a political and legal discussion,” Gottlieb said in an interview with CNBC.
He added, “The bottom line is they were doing research on viruses in that institute that was making those viruses potentially more dangerous to humans. And handling the viruses in ways that could potentiate their release, particularly by infecting transgenic animals that have fully-humanized immune systems.”
“They were doing things in that lab that could have led to circumstances where a virus that was purposefully evolved in ways that it could be more dangerous to humans could have escaped,” Gottlieb further emphasised.
He continued, “What’s revealed by these documents are two interesting details I previously didn’t know. First, there was experimentation being done on MERS-like coronaviruses, not just SARS-like coronaviruses. Second, they affirmed what we suspected about coronavirus research being done at other institutes around Wuhan… at a level three biocontainment facility.

Gottlieb previously noted that “These kinds of lab leaks happen all the time,” further warning that “in China, the last six known outbreaks of SARS-1 have been out of labs, including the last known outbreak, which was a pretty extensive outbreak that China initially wouldn’t disclose that it came out of lab.”
“It was only disclosed finally by some journalists who were able to trace that outbreak back to a laboratory,” Gottlieb explained back in May.

Gottlieb also recently revealed that Fauci briefed world health leaders in the spring of 2020 that a lab leak was a possible cause of the COVID outbreak.
Appearing on CBS News, Gottlieb admitted that Fauci told government health advisors that the virus “looked unusual,” and that scientists he was working with “had suspicions” that it was manipulated.

For almost 18 months now, the former FDA head has been calling for a robust investigation into China’s cover up of the outbreak:

It also recently emerged that there was an <a href="https://summit.news/2021/06/08/report-a-different-virus-leaked-from-another-chinese-bio-lab-at-same-time-as-covid-19/">outbreak of a DIFFERENT virus</a> from another Chinese bio-facility at around the same time as the COVID outbreak.
<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/a0badd5d-4d88-4a3b-b019-61c6d8275caa">Reports also indicate</a> that China is planning on opening scores of bio-facilities over the next five years.
The Financial Times reports that “some Chinese officials have warned about poor security at existing facilities. In 2019 Yuan Zhiming, the director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s BSL-4 lab, wrote a review of the safety deficiencies in China’s laboratories. ‘Several high-level BSLs have insufficient operational funds for routine yet vital processes,’ Yuan wrote, adding that maintenance costs were ‘generally neglected.’”
The report adds that Yuan warned “Due to the limited resources, some BSL-3 laboratories run on extremely minimal operational costs or in some cases none at all.”
As both Senator Rand Paul and former CIA director and secretary of state Mike Pompeo also <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/31/video-rand-paul-pompeo-warn-wuhan-lab-still-running-involved-with-bioweapons/">warned recently</a>, the Wuhan Institute of Virology is still up and running, and there is evidence pointing to its involvement with the Chinese military in bioweapons research.
The accumulating <a href="https://summit.news/2021/06/08/us-government-lab-report-from-may-2020-concluded-that-wuhan-leak-needed-investigating/">scientific evidence</a> that points to a potential coronavirus lab leak, as well as China’s record on bio-security, and its constant stonewalling, warrants an adequate independent investigation, which hasn’t happened.

Senator Rand Paul responded to Joe Biden’s far reaching vaccine <a href="https://summit.news/2021/09/10/video-psaki-declares-government-will-make-employers-enforce-vaccine-mandates/">mandate announcement</a> by stating that it ignores science and should be resisted by Americans.

Paul has been making the point for months now that indiscriminate vaccination programs are anti-scientific because they do not take into account natural immunity, which is a better form of protection than experimental vaccines.
“Until they show me evidence that people who have already had the infection are dying in large numbers, or being hospitalized or getting very sick, I just made my own personal decision that I’m not getting vaccinated because I’ve already had the disease and I have natural immunity,” Paul said in May. 
In a further statement Paul noted “To dictate that a person recovered from COVID-19 with natural immunity also submit to a vaccine — without scientific evidence — is nothing more than hubris. If you have no proof that people who acquired natural immunity are getting or transmitting the disease in real numbers, then perhaps you should just be quiet.” 
Paul was one of <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9975589/Republicans-rip-Bidens-American-order-forcing-companies-100-workers-mandate-vaccines.html">scores of GOP lawmakers</a> to speak out against Biden’s sweeping vaccine mandate announcement.
A college professor at the University of California, Irvine, has gone one further by bringing a lawsuit against the school system’s Board of Regents and president for forcing a vaccine mandate even for those who have immunity.
<a href="https://wjla.com/news/nation-world/california-professor-sues-university-over-vaccine-mandate-citing-natural-immunity-09-01-2021">SBG reports</a> that Aaron Kheriaty, professor of psychiatry and human behavior, brought the suit after he was informed his own natural immunity is of no significance where the vaccine mandate is concerned.
Kheriaty, also a director of UCI’s Medical Ethics Program and a member of the UC Office of the President Critical Care Bioethics Working Group, said “I feel like I’m being treated unequally.”
“If my immunity is as good, indeed, very likely better, than that conferred by the vaccine, there doesn’t seem to be any rational basis for discriminating against my form of immunity and requiring me to get a different form of immunity,” Kheriaty added.
Speaking about others who expressed concerns about the school mandate, Kheriaty further urged that “it became clear to me that if I, as a medical ethicist, didn’t stand up and try to represent those voices, then those folks would be steamrolled by these policies.”
A legal brief by Kheriaty and other faculty members states that “it violates medical ethics to expose someone to this risk when they have robust, durable immunity that actually neutralizes SARS-CoV-2 upon exposure.”
