Britain's new HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier has paid a port call to Japan, in a mission that adds to pressure from Tokyo, the US and allies on China over its increasingly assertive regional maritime presence.
The Queen Elizabeth is the flagship of the UK's Carrier Strike Group deployment, which has been making stops around Japan and carrying out exercises along with vessels from allied nations in recent weeks.
"This port call to Japan by the British carrier strike group and the joint exercises represent the intent of our two nations," Japan's Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said Monday at Yokosuka base, where the British ship is visiting.
"Japan-UK defence cooperation contributes not only to the security of our nations but also to the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific and the international community, while also dealing with global issues," Kishi added.
Both nations have voiced opposition to unilateral efforts to change the status quo in the disputed East China and South China seas and the importance of a free and open maritime order, he said.
In a statement, the British embassy in Tokyo said the deployment was "a powerful demonstration of the UK's close and enduring partnership with Japan and the UK's commitment to maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region."
The massive carrier, weighing in at 65,000 tonnes, is the largest surface vessel ever built in the UK and is leading a group of six British ships and a submarine, one US destroyer and a Dutch frigate.
The group is billed as "the largest concentration of maritime and air power to leave the UK in a generation" and has already prompted a blunt warning from Chinese state media.
In July, an editorial in the nationalist state-run newspaper Global Times warned China might feel compelled to respond to the flotilla.
Addressing the UK and allied strike force specifically, it said: "We seriously warn this group: They are obliged to remain restrained and obey the rules."
It came as the group entered the disputed South China Sea after exercises with the navies of India, Malaysia and Singapore ahead of the Japan stops.
Britain's defence ministry said at the time that the deployment was "confident, but not confrontational."
Beijing's claims to the entire South China Sea encompass uninhabited islets that lie barely above the waterline, as well as man-made islands built to house airstrips and military bases.
The CSG21 is scheduled to visit 40 nations on a deployment that will see it cover over 26,000 nautical miles.

Australian emergency services rescued a three-year old boy on Monday three days after he went missing from his family's property.
Video footage released by New South Wales police showed the boy, Anthony 'AJ' Elfalak, desperately scooping water into his mouth in a creek in Putty, around 150 km (93 miles) northwest of Sydney, just before his rescue.
AJ was taken to hospital and was reported to have suffered some scrapes from a fall and a nappy rash.
Asked what had sustained him during the ordeal, the boy's relieved father Anthony Elfalak said: "Just to see my son, he's named after me."
It was unclear why the boy had wandered away from his parents' home on Friday.

Private universities resumed functioning in war-torn Afghanistan on Monday with the Taliban - which has <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/taliban-government-formation-baradar-haqqanis-clash-holds-up-taliban-government-formation-sources-2531131" target="_self">promised a more moderate government</a>, including assurances of human rights, particularly those concerning women and children - allowing female students to attend classes.
The hardline Islamist group has still, however, imposed restrictions on the clothes they may wear, where and how they are seated in class, who can teach them, and even the length of their classes.
Photographs by the Aamaj News Agency (which NDTV has not been able to independently verify) reveal the 'new normal' for Afghan college students - divided classrooms, literally and figuratively.

A document issued by the Taliban's education authority Saturday, prior to classes resuming today, ordered <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/women-attending-private-afghan-universities-to-wear-niqab-cover-face-taliban-2530780" target="_self">women to wear an abaya robe and niqab</a> (that covers most of the face) and that classes must be segregated by sex - or at least divided by a curtain.
There was no order for women to wear the all-enveloping burqa but the niqab effectively covers most of the face anyway, leaving just the eyes exposed.

The document also ordered that female students should only be taught by other women. If this is not possible then "old men of good character" can fill in. "Universities are required to recruit female teachers for female students based on their facilities," the education authority said
Among other decrees from the Taliban are that men and women must use separate entrances and exits, and female students must leave five minutes earlier to stop men and women from mixing.
Female students must stay in waiting rooms till their male counterparts have left the building.
A university professor, who asked not to be named, told AFP "it is a difficult plan - we don't have enough female instructors or classes to segregate the girls... But the fact that they are allowing girls to go to schools and universities is a big positive step."
Girls and boys will also be segregated at primary and secondary schools, which was already common throughout deeply conservative Afghanistan.
Last month Abdul Baqi Haqqani, the acting minister for higher education, was quoted by AFP as saying the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/women-allowed-to-attend-university-under-new-rule-taliban-acting-minister-2522994" target="_self">Taliban wants to "create a reasonable and Islamic curriculum</a>... in line with our Islamic, national and historical values and... be able to compete with other countries".
Whether women can work, freely attend school and college and be able to mix with men have been some of the most pressing questions since the Taliban swept into Kabul on August 15.
August's meeting of education officials offered a potential answer - no women were present at a meeting of elders in Kabul, although several senior Taliban officials were.
A lecturer who previously worked at a city university told AFP this showed "systematic prevention of women's participation" and "a gap between the Taliban's commitments and actions".
University admission rates have risen over the past 20 years, particularly among women who have studied side-by-side with men and attended seminars delivered by male professors.
The Taliban - feared for their brutal first regime - has promised to be more inclusive, particularly in regards to human rights and gender equality, but reports like the one that emerged earlier today - <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/taliban-shoots-afghan-policewoman-in-front-of-her-family-2531018#pfrom=home-ndtv_topscroll" target="_self">a pregnant policewoman was shot dead</a> - have raised fears they will revert to type.
Promises women can also work have been viewed with scepticism too, given reports like Shabnam Dawran, a popular Afghan journalist who said <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/afghan-woman-news-anchor-barred-from-work-after-taliban-takeover-2514332" target="_self">she was barred from working at her TV station</a>.

Kabul:
The leader of the resistance movement in Afghanistan's Panjshir Valley on Monday called for a "national uprising" against the Taliban.
In an audio message sent to media, National Resistance Front commander Ahmad Massoud said: "Wherever you are, inside or outside, I call on you to begin a national uprising for the dignity, freedom and prosperity of our country."
The Taliban on Monday claimed total control over Afghanistan, saying they had won the key battle for the Panjshir Valley, the last remaining holdout of resistance against their rule.
Following their lightning-fast victory in mid-August over the former Afghan government's security forces and the withdrawal of US troops after 20 years of war, the Taliban turned to fighting the forces defending the mountainous Panjshir Valley.
As the Islamist hardliners claimed victory, their chief spokesman warned against any further attempts to rise up against their rule while urging former members of the security forces to join their regime's ranks.
"With this victory, our country is completely taken out of the quagmire of war," chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.
"Anyone who tries to start an insurgency will be hit hard. We will not allow another," he later added at press conference in Kabul.
The Taliban published a video of their flag being raised over the governor's house in Panjshir -- underscoring a historic win that has seen the anti-Taliban bastion defeated for the first time during 40 years of conflict.
It remained in the hands of resistance fighters during Soviet rule, a subsequent civil war and the Taliban's first regime of the late 1990s.
The National Resistance Front (NRF) in Panjshir -- made up of anti-Taliban militia and former Afghan security forces -- on Sunday acknowledged suffering major battlefield losses and called for a ceasefire.
But on Monday the group said in a tweet that its fighters were still present in "strategic positions" in the valley.
The NRF includes local fighters loyal to Ahmad Massoud -- the son of the famous anti-Soviet and anti-Taliban commander Ahmad Shah Massoud -- as well as remnants of the Afghan military that retreated to the Panjshir Valley.
As Taliban fighters amassed in the valley, Massoud on Monday called on Afghans in and out of the country to "rise up in resistance".

Beijing:
Germany's ambassador to China Jan Hecker died suddenly, less than two weeks after taking up his post, the European nation's foreign office said on Monday.
Hecker, 54, a foreign policy adviser to Chancellor Angela Merkel, had presented his credentials at China's foreign ministry on August 24, the embassy in the Chinese capital told Reuters by social media.
The cause of death had yet to be confirmed.
"It is with deep sadness and dismay that we learned of the sudden death of the German ambassador to China," Germany's Federal Foreign Office said on its website.
An embassy spokesman declined further comment to Reuters.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin offered condolences when asked about Hecker's death during a regular media briefing.
"We are shocked to learn about the sudden death of Ambassador Hecker, who had been working actively to promote China-Germany relations since assuming his post," he said.
China would provide assistance to Hecker's family and the embassy, he added.
Hecker had appeared "happy and all right" when he hosted an event about German artist Joseph Beuys at his Beijing home last Friday, a guest at the event said.

Hecker had arrived in China on August 1, the embassy said, and like all arrivals would have been required to spend time in quarantine.

“These are bad attitudes and are accelerating. How far can this go, you wonder?” he questioned.
Carlson also described some of the insane policies being put into place in Australia and New Zealand, describing them as akin to North Korea.
