President Joe Biden called the US airlift of more than 120,000 people from Afghanistan an "extraordinary success" Tuesday, a day after the last US soldiers pulled out of the country.
"We completed one of the biggest airlifts in history," Biden said.
"No nation has ever done anything like it in all of history; only the United States had the capacity and the will and ability to do it," he said.

When Ezmarai Ahmadi returned home from work on Sunday evening in Kabul, the usual gaggle of squealing children was waiting to greet him -- his sons and daughters, and a slew of nieces and nephews.
His brother, Aimal Ahmadi, said Ezmarai pulled his white sedan into the driveway of a modest house in Kwaja Burga, a densely populated neighbourhood in the northwest of the Afghan capital, and handed the keys to his eldest son to park.
Youngsters piled into the vehicle -- pretending the parking routine was an adventure -- while Ezmarai watched from the side, his brother told AFP.
Then, according to Aimal, a missile came screeching down -- striking the car with a terrible force and obliterating the lives of 10 people in an instant.
The United States said Sunday it had destroyed an explosive-laden vehicle in an airstrike, thwarting a bid by ISIS to detonate a car bomb at Kabul airport.
On Monday, Aimal said he had lost 10 members of his family in the strike, including his own daughter and five other children.
"The rocket came and hit the car full of kids inside our house," he said.
"It killed all of them."
When an AFP journalist visited the scene on Monday, Aimal was impatiently waiting for other relatives to arrive to help him organise burials for most of his family.
"My brother and his four children were killed. I lost my small daughter... nephews and nieces," he said disconsolately.
AFP was unable to independently verify Aimal's account.
The United States said it was investigating media reports of civilian casualties as a result of the strike.
"We are aware of reports of civilian casualties following our strike on a vehicle in Kabul," Captain Bill Urban, a US military spokesman, said in a statement.
Despair
The United States airstrike came after an ISIS suicide bomber triggered a massive blast at an entrance to Kabul airport last week, as huge crowds clamoured to get inside in the hope of getting aboard one of the final evacuation flights out of Afghanistan.
Nearly 100 Afghans were killed in the jihadist attack, and also 13 US service members.
Against that backdrop, US intelligence had warned of another imminent attack, and on Sunday the US military said it had stopped one before it happened.
"We are still assessing the results of this strike, which we know disrupted an imminent ISIS-K threat to the airport," Urban said Sunday, using an acronym for the Afghan branch of IS.
Urban said an investigation was underway to determine if civilians had been killed, while signalling that fault may lay with explosives purportedly in the vehicle.
"We know that there were substantial and powerful subsequent explosions resulting from the destruction of the vehicle, indicating a large amount of explosive material inside that may have caused additional casualties," he said.
"It is unclear what may have happened, and we are investigating further."
When asked later about the claims of civilian causalities, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said: "We are not in a position to dispute it".
He pledged the United States would be "transparent" if the investigation showed civilians were killed while defending the military's efforts to avoid loss of life.
Aimal said he cannot believe his brother could be mistaken for an ISIS group sympathiser, let alone an operative planning a deadly car bomb attack.
Ezmarai, his brother said, was an engineer working with a non-governmental organisation.
Rashid Noori, who told AFP he was Aimal's neighbour, said he too had rushed to the scene of the strike.
"The Taliban kill us, ISIS kill us and the Americans kill us," he said.
"Do they all think our children are terrorists?"

Washington:
The US State Department has raised its travel advisory alert for Canada to a "level 3 - reconsider travel" status amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it said in a statement on Tuesday.
The department, along with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned on Monday against travel to Switzerland, among other countries because of rising cases of the novel coronavirus.
The CDC also raised its Covid-19 travel warning to "level 4: very high" for the US island territories of Puerto Rico and Guam.
Puerto Rico said on Tuesday it would close some private businesses and prohibit alcohol sales after midnight effective Thursday.
The Caribbean island also said it was requiring mandatory use of masks in open places where 50 people or more are gathered and prohibiting elective surgeries, subject to medical criteria, which require the use of post-operative intensive care units.

Shanghai:
Chinese authorities have instructed an American Chamber of Commerce in the southwestern city of Chengdu to cease operations, officials with the organisation said on Tuesday.
The chamber notified members on Monday that, in accordance with Chinese laws and regulations, it had to stop operations and "no longer carry out any activities in the name of the American Chamber of Commerce in Southwest China".
The statement, seen by Reuters, did not provide a specific reason why the chamber, which promotes trade and investment between the United States and the region, had been instructed to cease operations.
Benjamin Wang, the group's chairman, told Reuters by WeChat message that it was in discussions with local authorities about its registration and future direction.
China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) appeared to be enforcing a rule that countries maintain only one official chamber of commerce in the country, Wang said
The MCA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Chengdu chamber is not affiliated with the American Chamber of Commerce in China, a business advocacy group based in Beijing with offices in several other cities.
The closure of the chamber comes just over one year after China closed the US consulate in Chengdu, in retaliation for China's ouster from its consulate in Houston a week earlier.
A senior US administration official urged Chinese authorities to work with the chamber to resolve any issues surrounding its registration and future operation.
"This closure is only the latest example of how the PRC's opaque, arbitrary regulatory environment is contributing to an investment climate that is increasingly hostile towards foreign businesses," the official said, using the acronym for the People's Republic of China.
