Wellington:
New Zealand's government on Tuesday reported that new COVID-19 cases fell for a second day, down to 49, amid the tight lockdown the country undertook during the latest outbreak this month.
Except for a small number of cases in February, New Zealand was mainly coronavirus-free for months, until an outbreak of the Delta variant imported from Australia prompted Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to order a snap nationwide lockdown on Aug. 17.
The total number of cases in the outbreak is at 612, with 597 in New Zealand's largest city of Auckland and 15 in the capital Wellington.
The declining number of daily cases signals that the social restrictions are reducing the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant, Ardern said in a news conference.
"We have a second day where our numbers have declined. We want the tail of this outbreak to be as short as possible," Ardern said.
Around 1.7 million Aucklanders will remain in strict level 4 lockdown for another two weeks, while restrictions for the remainder of the country will ease slightly from Wednesday.
Police placed checkpoints at the outskirts of Auckland to ensure no non-essential movement was allowed into the city.
Police also said they had arrested 19 people on Tuesday following anti-lockdown protest around the country.
There are now 33 people in hospitals from the latest Delta outbreak, the Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said, with eight cases in stable condition in intensive care.
"It is sobering to see six cases in the outbreak are under the age of one," he said
But he added that the public health measures in place were slowing the spread of the virus and cases will continue to decline.
Ardern's lockdowns, along with closing the international border from March 2020, were credited with reining in COVID-19.
However, the government now faces questions over a delayed vaccine rollout, as well as rising costs in a country heavily reliant on an immigrant workforce.
Just over a quarter of the population has been fully vaccinated so far, the slowest pace among the wealthy nations of the OECD grouping.

Once one of the most secure sites in Afghanistan, the airport's passenger terminal was trashed.

On Tuesday, all checkpoints, bar one, had been removed from the road leading to the airport.
The mood had changed too.
Taliban guards were in high spirits, shaking hands with drivers and passengers.
Ensuring the security of Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport is a key issue, and the Taliban have repeatedly said they would not accept any foreign military presence in Afghanistan.

Dozens of aircraft and military helicopters stood empty, wrecked by American forces in a final act before they flew away.
Before the last US troops left, they disabled scores of aircraft and armoured vehicles -- as well as a high-tech rocket defence system -- at the airport, a US general said.
Cockpit windows had been smashed, and aircraft tyres shot out.
Central Command head General Kenneth McKenzie said 73 aircraft were "demilitarised," or rendered useless, by US troops before they wrapped up the two-week evacuation of the Taliban-controlled country.

He said the Pentagon, which built up a force of nearly 6,000 troops to occupy and operate Kabul's airport when the airlift began on August 14, left behind around 70 MRAP armoured tactical vehicles -- which can cost up to $1 million apiece -- that it disabled before leaving, and 27 Humvees.
The US also left behind the C-RAM system -- counter rocket, artillery, and mortar -- that was used to protect the airport from rocket attacks.
The system helped fend off a five-rocket barrage from the Islamic State group on Monday.

Even before the last US flight left Kabul at midnight on Monday, many of the bright and garish sights and sounds of city life in <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/afghanistan-taliban-crisis-live-updates-us-military-completes-withdrawal-from-afghanistan-2524298" target="_self">Afghanistan</a> were changing as those left behind tried to fit in with the austere tone of their new Taliban rulers.
The Taliban have so far been at pains to show a more conciliatory face to the world, with none of the harsh public punishments and outright bans on public entertainments that characterized their previous time in power before 2001.
Cultural activities are allowed, they say, so long as they do not go against Sharia law and Afghanistan's Islamic culture.
Taliban authorities in Kandahar, the birthplace of the movement issued a formal order against radio stations playing music and female announcers last week but for many, no formal order was necessary.
Already, colourful signs outside beauty parlours have been painted over, jeans have been replaced by traditional dress and radio stations have replaced their normal menu of Hindi and Persian pop and call-in shows with sombre patriotic music.
"It's not that the Taliban ordered us to change anything, we have altered the programming for now as we don't want Taliban to force us to close down," said Khalid Sediqqi, a producer at a private radio station in the central city of Ghazni.
"Also no one in this country is in the mood for entertainment, we are all in a state of shock," he said. "I am not even sure if anyone is tuning to radio anymore."
During the 20 years of Western-backed government, a lively popular culture grew up in Kabul and other cities with a mashup of body building, energy drinks, extravagant sculpted hairstyles and jangly pop songs. Turkish soap operas, call-in programmes and television talent shows like 'Afghan Star' became major hits.
'TOXIC'
For senior Taliban, many raised in religious madrassas and with the experience of years of fighting and hardship, the change is overdue.
"Our culture has become toxic, we see Russian and American influence everywhere even in the food we eat, that is something people should realise and make necessary changes," a Taliban commander said. "This will take time but it will happen."
Across the country, the change has been noticeable.
While senior Taliban officials have said repeatedly their forces should treat the population respectfully and not hand out arbitrary punishments, many mistrust them or don't believe they can control the footsoldiers on the streets.
"There is no music in all Jalalalad city, people are scared and afraid because Taliban are beating people," Naseem, a former official in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
Zarifullah Sahel, a local journalist in Laghman province near Kabul said the head of the Taliban's local cultural commission told the state-run public radio and six other private stations to adjust their programming to ensure it was in line with Sharia law.
Since then music programmes and political, cultural and news programming not related to religious issues had dried up.
But even where formal orders have not been issued, the message that the freewheeling era has come to an end and that it is safer not to stand out has been clear.
"I fear the Taliban may target me if was seen wearing jeans or western shirts or a suit," said Mustafa Ali Rahman, a former tax official in Lagman province. "One just doesn't know what they can do to punish us."
A former civil activist in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif said shops and restaurants appeared to have decided for themselves and turned off their radios.
"There is no warning about music, but people themselves have stopped," he said.

When Ezmarai Ahmadi returned home from work on Sunday evening in Kabul, the usual gaggle of squealing children were waiting to greet him -- his sons and daughters, and a slew of nieces and nephews.
He pulled his white sedan into the driveway of a modest house in Kwaja Burga, a densely populated neighbourhood in the northwest of the Afghan capital, and handed the keys to his eldest son to park.
Youngsters piled into the vehicle -- pretending the parking routine was an adventure -- while Ezmarai watched from the side.
Then out of the blue Afghan sky, a missile came screeching down -- striking the car with a terrible force and obliterating the lives of 10 people in an instant.
The United States said Sunday it had destroyed an explosive-laden vehicle in an air strike, thwarting a bid by the Islamic State to detonate a car bomb at Kabul airport.
On Monday, it looked as if they could have made a terrible mistake.
"The rocket came and hit the car full of kids inside our house," said Aimal Ahmadi, Ezmarai's brother.
"It killed all of them."
Aimal said 10 members of the family died in the air strike -- including his own daughter and five other children.
On Monday, when AFP visited the scene, Aimal was impatiently waiting for other relatives to arrive to help him organise burials for most of his family.
"My brother and his four children were killed. I lost my small daughter... nephews and nieces," he said disconsolately.
"We are aware of reports of civilian casualties following our strike on a vehicle in Kabul," Captain Bill Urban, a US military spokesman, said in a statement.
Despair
Aimal can scarcely believe his brother could be mistaken for an Islamic State sympathiser, let alone an operative planning a deadly car bomb attack.
Ezmarai was an engineer working with a non-governmental organisation -- an ordinary Afghan trying to make ends meet in a turbulent time.
US nerves have been frayed since an IS suicide bomber triggered a massive blast at an entrance to the airport on Thursday, as huge crowds clamoured to get inside in the hope of getting aboard one of the final evacuation flights out of Afghanistan.
Nearly 100 Afghans were killed, and also 13 US service members -- just days before the last American soldier withdrew from the country on Monday night.
Against that backdrop, US intelligence had warned of another imminent attack, and on Sunday the US military said it had stopped one before it happened.
"We are still assessing the results of this strike, which we know disrupted an imminent ISIS-K threat to the airport," Urban said Sunday, using an acronym for the Afghan branch of the Islamic State group.
"We know that there were substantial and powerful subsequent explosions resulting from the destruction of the vehicle, indicating a large amount of explosive material inside that may have caused additional casualties," he continued.
"It is unclear what may have happened, and we are investigating further."
The deaths were among the last reported before the final US forces flew out of Afghanistan on Tuesday, after a brutal 20-year war.
Just over 38,000 civilians were killed between 2009 and the end of 2020, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, which began systematically recording civilian casualties in 2009.
More than 70,000 others were wounded over the same period.
When locals heard the blast in the neighbourhood, they swiftly came to see what help they could offer.
"All the children were killed inside the car, the adults were killed just outside. The car was on fire -- we could hardly find body parts," said one, named Sabir.
"We would be deeply saddened by any potential loss of innocent life," the US spokesman said in the statement.
But those words rang hollow for another neighbour, Rashid Noori.
"The Taliban kill us, IS kill us and the Americans kill us," he said.
"Do they all think our children are terrorists?"

With the Taliban in <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/afghanistan-taliban-crisis-live-updates-us-military-completes-withdrawal-from-afghanistan-2524298" target="_self">possession of Kabul's airport</a> after the United States completed its withdrawal on Tuesday, the focus will now shift from the mammoth Western evacuation operation seen in the past two weeks to the group's plans for the transport hub.
The symbolism of the airport was underlined Tuesday when the Taliban's top spokesman stood on its runway and declared victory over the United States. But what happens next remains unclear. Here is a look at the future of Hamid Karzai International Airport:
Who is going to run security?
Attacks in the past week have shown the airport is a target for terrorists, so security is the primary concern.
A suicide bombing -- claimed by the Islamic State's Afghanistan-Pakistan chapter -- struck one of the main gates, killing more than 100 people including 13 US troops.
On Monday, rockets were fired towards the airport, which the Taliban said were intercepted by the airport's missile defence systems.
After the Taliban seized power, the United States took control of the airport to manage the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, with the help of military contingents from other countries.
Turkey had offered to run security following the withdrawal of foreign troops, but the Taliban repeatedly said it would not accept any foreign military presence in Afghanistan after August 31.
"Our fighters and special forces are capable of controlling the airport and we do not need anyone's help for the security and administrative control of the Kabul airport," Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi told AFP on Monday.
However, Michael Kugelman, a South Asia specialist at the Wilson Center think tank in Washington, said the installation of a foreign security presence would be necessary if airlines were to return, and that a deal could yet be struck.
"You're looking at a very volatile environment security-wise," he told AFP.
"There are all kinds of alarm bells that should be sounding for commercial airlines that I imagine would not be comfortable getting into the airport."
Who will operate the airport's logistics?
As far as the US is concerned, State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Friday that it was "essentially giving the airport back to the Afghan people."
In recent weeks NATO has played a key role, with civilian personnel taking care of air traffic control, fuel supplies and communications.
Like with security, there were discussions with Turkey over running logistics.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country was still assessing the Islamist group's offer, but with the Taliban insisting on controlling security, Erdogan appeared to drop the idea.
"Let's say you took over the security but how would we explain to the world if another bloodbath takes place there?" he said.
Running and maintaining an airport is complex and requires expertise.
With thousands of skilled workers believed to have fled the country -- despite Taliban pleas for them to stay -- questions remain over whether there will be enough trained workers left in the Afghan capital.
What state is the airport in?
US officials have said the airport is in a bad condition, with much of the basic infrastructure of the airport degraded or destroyed.
A pilot told AFP the airport terminal building was trashed by passengers during the chaos of the early days of the Taliban takeover.
As well as the passenger halls, critical infrastructure has been destroyed, including air traffic control terminals, which will need to be replaced for commercial flights to run again.
On the plus side, the two-week mass evacuation campaign has shown that the airport's runways are at least operational, if in poor condition.
Will commercial flights restart?
The Taliban have insisted they want to keep the civilian airport open, but without guarantees over security, commercial airlines simply won't operate out of Kabul.
"You're looking at a perfect storm of risks for airlines," Kugelman said.
A key incentive to operate a functional airport would be the boost it would give to the Taliban's international image.
"If the Taliban's looking to get recognition and legitimacy from governments around the world, then it has to have a working, safe, trusted airport in place," Kugelman added.
But it is likely to take time.
Will people even be allowed to leave the country?
The Taliban have insisted Afghans will be able to come and go.
The group's deputy chief negotiator, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, said those with passports and visas can go abroad "in a dignified manner and with peace of mind" after commercial flights open.
However, many are sceptical about the Taliban's claims that they will not seek revenge against those who worked for the collapsed government or foreign forces.
And Kugelman said he believed the Afghans who did not manage to be evacuated before August 31 may now be too afraid to travel to the airport.
"I think that for many of them who already have reason to fear the Taliban, the prospect of trying to escape the country by going to an airport controlled by the Taliban will be a very unpalatable thought."

A Michigan doctor gave full-throated support for <a href="https://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2021-2022/billintroduced/House/pdf/2021-HIB-4471.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HB 4471</a>, a bill which would prohibit businesses in the state from requiring vaccinations as a condition of employment.
Testifying before the Michigan House last week, Dr. Christina Parks delivered powerful expert analysis explaining it’s unethical for the government to mandate vaccines which, not only don’t prevent transmission, but actually appear to be weakening the human immune system.
“…This is extremely complex science that has been oversimplified in the media to basically take away our freedom of choice,” Dr. Parks says.
Dr. Parks breaks down how the shot doesn’t attenuate symptoms related to the Covid Delta variant, and says the “CDC is blaming anti-vaxxers for the limitations of this vaccine design.”
“I suggest that they be transparent and tell parents that, although it is preventing severe disease in their children, it is not preventing transmission because we have created a whole class of asymptomatic pertussis carriers who are increasing the disease,” Dr. Parks says.
She goes on to explain that PHds are among the most highly skeptical of the vaccine, as well as African Americans who have an unvaccinated rate of 70 percent.
“Why? Because they don’t trust their government. Do they have reason not to trust their government?” Parks asks rhetorically, before building her case.
“Well, between the years of 1930 in 1970 the CDC conducted the Tuskegee experiment where they took untreated males with syphilis and they refused to treat them. Even after antibiotics became available, they still did not treat them and they did not tell them that they had syphilis. They told those people that they were there to secure their health and they did not secure their health. They abused them. You say, ‘Well that was in the past,’ although I don’t think 1970 was that long ago.”
Dr. Parks concludes her remarks by comparing the discrimination faced by unvaccinated people in the workforce to the racial segregation of olden days.
“…You’re telling me that my son will not be able to be educated if, based on the history of African Americans in this country, that he doesn’t want to be vaccinated?”
“So I will leave you with that question: who are we going to exclude from the workforce? Are we going to continue with discrimination and segregation in the United States of America?”

I received my PhD in cellular and molecular biology right here in the state of Michigan from University of Michigan Medical School, and so I’m very well versed in the science of both these mRNA gene therapy vaccines, this kind of technology, as well as what a vaccine is designed to do in the body, what it can do, what it can’t do, and the fact that this is extremely complex science that has been oversimplified in the media to basically take away our freedom of choice.
What I want to address today in this limited time is the fact that vaccine requirements and mandates are based on the faulty assumption that the vaccines in question prevent transmission of the pathogen. Right? Does the vaccine for DTAP prevent transmission? No. Does the vaccine for flu prevent transmission? No. Do the vaccines for covid prevent transmission? No. In fact, they were never designed to do that.
All right, so you’re asking, ‘What about this 95 effectiveness?’ If you look at those clinical trials, they do not say that they prevent transmission; they expressly say that they’re measuring whether they attenuate symptoms. So they’re 95 percent effective based on their clinical trials at attenuating symptoms for the first variant, which is essentially gone in our population.
Right? Now the predominant variant is the Delta and CDC Director Walensky basically said that these vaccines have no ability to prevent infection by and transmission of the Delta variant.
So our policy needs not to be built on the hope of what we think something we want it to do, but what the data actually tell us. So do these…vaccines prevent the virus from infecting and replicating in the nose and nasopharynx? No. They’ve only been shown to prevent that replication in the lungs. They’re different — the mucosa is very different than the lungs. It’s very different than the blood. You inject it to the blood, you make antibodies in your blood. The virus isn’t infecting your blood, it’s infecting your mucosa and you don’t produce any IGA to neutralize it.
In fact, recent studies have shown that the vaccinated, especially with the Delta variant, and the unvaccinated have similar amounts of virus in their nose and throat.
In Barnstable, Massachusetts, the CDC tracked an outbreak of 469 cases of Covid, 74 percent occurred in fully-vaccinated and 4 out of five of those hospitalized were vaccinated.
Right, so maybe they are mandating this because they just didn’t know with the Covid…and so my main complaint is with our health agencies and the CDC who basically know better and are misleading the public.
So, let’s look at DTAP which the scientists in the CDC have known since 2014 that the acellular pertussis vaccine does not prevent people from getting infected with the pertussis bacteria and passing it to others.
In fact, it was never designed to do that. The vaccine was designed to neutralize the pertussis toxin. Pertussis, we know it as whooping cough; it can be fatal for children under six months, so neutralizing this toxin saves lives. All right?
I’m not going to debate that, but what it doesn’t do is neutralize the bacteria. So what happens is fully-vaccinated children go to daycare, they pick up that bacteria, and they come home, and they give it to their newborn brother, or sister, they get deathly ill and they go to the hospital. Hopefully our medical professionals are able to save them, but who do they blame? Now the CDC is blaming anti-vaxxers for the limitations of this vaccine design.
I suggest that they be transparent and tell parents that, although it is preventing severe disease in their children, it is not preventing transmission because we have created a whole class of asymptomatic pertussis carriers who are increasing the disease.
Now, the old DTP vaccine that many of you who are my age or older got, did prevent transmission. When we switched to the safer acellular version they knew that it was never designed to prevent transmission. It was safer, it had less adverse advance, but pertussis cases have gone through the roof. There’s a resurgence in pertussis because of the design of the vaccine and the vaccinologists know this. They’re trying to address it, and so we cannot mandate that something that does not prevent transmission.
What about the flu vaccine? Well, they have shown that basically there’s no difference, there’s no statistical difference if you’re vaccinated, or unvaccinated whether you get the flu or not — but it’s even worse, because although that first year it is somewhat effective, it’s about 65 percent effective at preventing symptoms in you, after that it actually has negative efficacy, and I want to address this because it’s very important.
Vaccines are made to a specific variant and when that variant mutates the vaccine no longer recognizes it, and so it’s like you’re seeing a completely new virus, and because that’s so you actually get more severe symptoms when you’re vaccinated against one variant and then it mutates and then your body sees the other variant; so there’s the potential, and the science shows, that in fact with the flu, if you get vaccinated in multiple years you are more likely to get severe disease, you are more likely to have more viral replication, and you are more likely to be hospitalized, both in adults and in children.
We are seeing the same thing in Covid with the Delta variant, and so we are mandating that people get a vaccine that could actually make them more sick when they’re exposed to the virus.
In fact, this week a paper came out and what it showed is that with this Delta variant when you’re vaccinated your body makes antibodies that are supposed to neutralize the virus, but they were supposed to neutralize the old variant. When they see this new variant what they’re doing is they’re actually…the antibodies are taking the virus and helping it infect the cells. All right?
That science was just published this week. We need to be looking at the science, and we need our policy to reflect the science, and we also need it to reflect our rights.
And so, as a PHd who knows the science, I’m in the category of the most vaccine hesitant group.
Yes, PHd’s are the most vaccine hesitant, followed by people who have less than a high school degree because they know what they don’t know and they don’t trust their government and many people, the other group that is very vaccine hesitant are African-Americans. 70 percent of African Americans have not taken this vaccine. Why? Because they don’t trust their government.
Do they have reason not to trust their government?
Well, between the years of 1930 in 1970 the CDC conducted the Tuskegee experiment where they took untreated males with syphilis and they refused to treat them. Even after antibiotics became available, they still did not treat them and they did not tell them that they had syphilis. They told those people that they were there to secure their health and they did not secure their health. They abused them. You say, ‘Well that was in the past,’ although I don’t think 1970 was that long ago.
While in 2012, whistleblower William Thompson came forward and said we published a study that said MMR does not cause autism, but we lied.
In fact, we shredded data that showed that when black boys are vaccinated on time they have increased rates of autism diagnosis, and we shredded it and we left it out of the paper.
As an African-American and a PHd, I want to ask each of you: are we going to exclude 70 percent of African-American people from the workforce and from education? My ancestors did not work this hard — I come up from a family that worked very hard and I’m very aware that my privileges are dependent on the work of my grandmother and my great-grandmother and I have great respect for these people that put me where I am, and yet you’re telling me that my son will not be able to be educated if, based on the history of African Americans in this country, that he doesn’t want to be vaccinated?
So I will leave you with that question: who are we going to exclude from the workforce? Are we going to continue with discrimination and segregation in the United States of America?
