Ahmad Massoud, leader of Afghanistan's last major outpost of anti-Taliban resistance, said on Sunday he hoped to hold peaceful talks with the terror group that seized power in Kabul a week ago but that his forces were ready to fight.
"We want to make the Taliban realise that the only way forward is through negotiation," he told Reuters by telephone from his stronghold in the mountainous Panjshir valley northwest of Kabul, where he has gathered remnants of regular army units and special forces as well as local militia units.
"We do not want a war to break out."
However he said his supporters were ready to fight if Taliban forces, which have so far stayed out of Panjshir, tried to invade.
"They want to defend, they want to fight, they want to resist against any totalitarian regime."
Massoud, son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, one of the main leaders of Afghanistan's anti-Soviet resistance in the 1980s, said the forces did not just come from Panjshir, which also held out against the Taliban prior to 2001.
"We are defending the whole country in one province."
He called for an inclusive, broad-based government in Kabul representing all of Afghanistan's different ethnic groups and said a "totalitarian regime" should not be recognised by the international community.

Berlin:
An Afghan woman gave birth to a baby girl on a US military plane shortly after arriving on an evacuation flight to Germany, the US Air Force tweeted on Sunday.
During the flight from a staging base in the Middle East, the woman went into labour and began to experience complications, it said.
"The aircraft commander decided to descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the aircraft, which helped stabilise and save the mother's life," the US Air Mobility Command said later on Twitter.
Immediately on landing at the Ramstein base, US military medics helped the woman deliver her baby in the cargo hold of the plane.
Mother and child were then transferred to a nearby medical facility "and are in good condition", it said.
Footage released by the US military showed the mother lying on a stretcher being carried off the plane by US soldiers at the base in southwest Germany.
A week after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, evacuation operations from foreign countries continue under extreme conditions marked by scenes of panic and desperation at Kabul airport.
Since 14 August, about 17,000 people have been evacuated by the US, including 2,500 Americans, the US government said earlier.
The US got the green light from Berlin for some of the evacuees to be directed to Germany, where it has a number of bases.
About 1,150 people landed at the Ramstein base on Saturday, from where they are expected to depart for the United States within days, a base spokesman said.

The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) pledged on Sunday to help achieve peace in Afghanistan and said its future leaders must guard against allowing the country to be used as a backyard for international terrorism.
The organisation urged "the future Afghan leadership" and the international community to work together to ensure that Afghanistan is never again used as a platform or safe haven for "terrorists".
"Terrorist organizations are not allowed to have a foothold (in Afghanistan)," said a final communique, issued after the Saudi Arabia-based organisation held a special meeting called by Riyadh to discuss the situation in the war-torn country.
The body's calls and decisions are mostly symbolic, but it shows mistrust towards the Taliban who took over Kabul last week, and how some Muslim countries are concerned about the new reality on the ground in Afghanistan.

Hashmat Ghani, the brother of former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, told NDTV on Sunday that he had "accepted" the Taliban to avoid instability, and that he had chosen to stay in the country to help in the transition period, but had not offered the group his "support".
Mr Ghani told NDTV that these were "very different things" and that his acceptance was to spare his country further political and economic problems - which he said had been underlined by the "devastating" departure of business leaders - following the Taliban taking control.
"I have accepted the Taliban but do not support them... 'supporting' is a very strong word. What happens once they are in control... that remains to be seen," Mr Ghani, a prominent businessman and the leader of Afghanistan's nomadic Kochi population, said.
"I don't think so. They (the Taliban) have shown courtesy to Afghan businesses. They keep saying they will allow women to work, we hear this from senior leaders... we hope they will," he said, when asked if there could be violence, particularly at the Kabul airport, after remaining western forces leave.
He also said that it is "important to bridge the divide in Afghan society" - that between the Taliban's social and cultural outlook and the contemporary world - and called on the educated classes to be open to the idea of working with the Taliban to restore the economy.

Mr Ghani's remarks comes as a video of him apparently pledging support to a Taliban presenting itself as a moderate version of the brutal group that ruled 1996-2001 was tweeted this week.
NDTV has not been able to independently verify this video.
"They (the Taliban) know security. They can handle that very well, but a government is more than security, and that's where the educated classes can help. I stayed back... to convince the educated and business community not to leave... The departure of business leaders is devastating," he said.
A 20-year war between the Taliban and US-backed government forces, a drop in local spending due to departing foreign troops and a tumbling currency are fuelling an economic crisis in the country.

Mr Ghani, however, reiterated the Taliban's promise to allow human rights, specifically for women, and said he hoped that senior leaders will act on this once a functioning government is formed.
He also spoke about the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/08/17/treasury-taliban-money-afghanistan/" target="_blank">US' decision to freeze nearly $9.5 billion in assets of the Afghan central bank</a>; he criticised the move and said it denied Afghans access to money to rebuild their country.
In a short but wide-ranging discussion with NDTV, Mr Ghani also said India - which has so far adopted <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/foreign-minister-s-jaishankar-asked-if-india-is-in-touch-with-taliban-his-reply-2513739" target="_self">a 'wait-and-watch' stance</a> - will have "no choice but to maintain a political relationship" with the Taliban.
He also hit out at Vice President Amrullah Saleh, who has joined hands with Ahmad Massoud, the son of an anti-Taliban fighter, to lead <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/anti-taliban-forces-say-theyve-taken-3-districts-in-north-afghanistan-2515767" target="_self">a military resistance that claims to have re-captured three districts</a>.
Mr Ghani called Mr Saleh an "idiot" and said he had led his brother - against whom he claimed an assassination plot - astray. He also denied reports he stole money before fleeing.

I didn't even get the chance to take my slippers off my feet and pull on my boots... arrived empty-handed," Ashraf Ghani was quoted by news agency AFP.
