PayPal Co-Founder Warns Financial Giant is Creating De Facto ‘No Buy List’ by Banning Dissidents

PayPal co-founder David Sacks warns that the financial giant is creating a de facto ‘no buy list’ by banning people for their opinions, a move that will actually increase extremism in the long term.
In an article posted on Bari Weiss’ <a href="https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/get-ready-for-the-no-buy-list">Substack newsletter</a>, the investor explains how PayPal’s role has been completely reversed from its initial objective of helping ordinary people not be dependent on large financial institutions to start a business.
“But now PayPal is turning its back on its original mission. It is now leading the charge to restrict participation by those it deems unworthy,” writes Sacks.
The entrepreneur argues that by partnering with the likes of the ADL and the SPLC, PayPal has allowed itself to be used as a tool by far-left activist outfits to censor ideological opposition.
“I have no desire to defend genuinely hateful or extremist groups,” writes Sacks. “Indeed, when I was COO at PayPal, we regularly worked with law enforcement to restrict illegal activity on our platform. But we are talking about something very different here: shutting down people and organizations that express views that are entirely lawful, even if they are unpopular in Silicon Valley.”

He points to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki’s pernicious announcement that the Biden administration is working with Facebook to directly censor information related to COVID-19 and her insistence that other platforms should mirror Facebook’s censorship policies at the behest of the government.
“The suppression of speech by the government is blatantly unconstitutional under the First Amendment,” writes Sacks, noting that PayPal is now a fully signed up member of Silicon Valley’s purge of undesirables.
“Now PayPal has gone much further, creating the economic equivalent of the No-Fly List with the ADL’s assistance. If history is any guide, other fintech companies will soon follow suit. As we saw in the case of speech restrictions, the political monoculture that prevails among employees of these companies will create pressure for all of them to act as a bloc.”
“When someone mistakenly lands on the No-Fly List, they can at least sue or petition the government for redress. But when your name lands on a No-Buy List created by a consortium of private fintech companies, to whom can you appeal?”

Sacks highlights how the monopolies created by fintech giants and the way they act in unison when banning individuals or groups is literally creating a society where dissidents will find it difficult to even function in society.
“Kicking people off social media deprives them of the right to speak in our increasingly online world,” he writes.
“Locking them out of the financial economy is worse: It deprives them of the right to make a living. We have seen how cancel culture can obliterate one’s ability to earn an income, but now the cancelled may find themselves without a way to pay for goods and services.”
Sacks concludes by noting that the same resentment against elites that handed Trump victory in 2016 is merely being re-created by Silicon Valley, while their stated policy goal of reducing “extremism” is actually having the opposite effect.
“If we continue down this path, a far more dangerous demagogue could emerge. I implore my successors at PayPal and other Big Tech companies to stop throwing kindling on the fires of populism by locking people out of the online public square and the modern web-based economy. Silenced voices and empty stomachs are fuel for the very extremism you claim to oppose,” writes Sacks.
He warns that deplatforming is creating “hordes of desperate people, denied a voice and livelihood,” who will simply vote for an autocratic dictator the first chance they get.

A new Congressional report into the origins of COVID-19 points to “unusual” activity at the Wuhan National Biosafety Lab involving air disinfection and hazardous waste systems, prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The report by Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/wuhan-lab-report-raises-further-questions-about-possible-covid-19-lab-leak">obtained by Fox News</a>, highlights how the lab in Wuhan requested bids for ‘major renovations’ to air safety and waste treatment systems in the facilities, just two years after they became operational.
The report notes that “Such a significant renovation so soon after the facility began operation appears unusual,” and that it “raise[s] questions about how well these systems were functioning in the months prior to the outbreak of COVID-19.” 
The report notes that it is unknown if any renovation work was ever carried out.
The findings will be presented in Congress this week where the Republicans will make the case that “the preponderance of evidence suggests SARS-CoV-2 was accidentally released from a Wuhan Institute of Virology laboratory.” 
Republicans will also present further evidence that the virus was genetically manipulated in the lab, according to the report.
<a href="https://summit.news/2021/06/30/video-house-subcommittee-hears-chinese-military-ran-wuhan-lab-experts-warn-its-highly-likely-covid-19-leaked/">The Republicans have built a case</a> around a timeline that indicates the virus escaped the lab “sometime prior to September 12, 2019.” 
At this time there is a record of activity such as the WIV’s viral sequence database disappearing from the internet, and the institute ramping up security.
The report notes that after lab workers became sick in November 2019 Major General Chen Wei, an expert in biology and chemical weapon defenses, took control of the Wuhan Institute’s biosafety level-4 lab.
The report suggests that this shows the Communist government “was concerned about the activity happening there as news of the virus was spreading.”
“If she took control in 2019, it would mean the CCP knew about the virus earlier, and that the outbreak began earlier,” the report states.

UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Requests Info on German Police Brutalizing Anti-Lockdown Protesters

The UN’s Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer has requested more information on an incident in which a female anti-lockdown protester in Berlin was grabbed by the throat and brutally thrown to the ground by riot police.
As we <a href="https://summit.news/2021/08/02/videos-chaos-erupts-on-the-streets-of-berlin-as-police-attack-anti-lockdown-protesters/">highlighted</a> earlier, the demonstrations ended up with a whopping 600 people being arrested amidst innumerable brazen examples of police brutality, including against children, that were caught on camera.
Germans were protesting against plans to ban unvaccinated people from a plethora of different venues, including restaurants, cinemas and stadiums.
One video clip shows an elderly protester merely attempting to walk past a police officer dressed in riot gear before he grabs her neck with both hands and throws her to the floor.

Cops were obviously given orders to enforce a draconian crackdown on the protesters given their behavior throughout the day, which looked like something out of the 1930’s.
The clip caught the attention of Nils Melzer, a professor of international law, whose official title is United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
“This has just been brought to my attention,” tweeted Melzer. “Can anyone provide my office with the specifics / witness statements of this incident and whether an official investigation has been launched?” he asked.

It’s highly unlikely that any investigation will take place given that riot police were clearly ordered to conduct themselves with wanton disregard for basic dignity and human rights.
Another video clip showed a police officer reacting to a young boy’s concern over the treatment of his mother by forcefully pushing him to the floor by his head.

Another protester also <a href="https://www.euronews.com/2021/08/01/berlin-police-harassed-and-attacked-by-demonstrators-in-anti-covid-19-measures-protests">collapsed and died</a> while being harassed by police to show his ID.
Anti-lockdown protesters have been vilified and dehumanized by the media and by vaccine cultists who lobby for them to be treated like lepers.
That’s why such scenes, which would cause outrage if they occurred at a Black Lives Matter or LGBT march, are either totally ignored or callously celebrated.

Through the color of law, New York’s embattled governor Andrew Cuomo is pressuring private businesses not to allow entry of customers who hadn’t taken the Covid-19 shot.
Cuomo, who infamously forced nursing homes to accept Covid-19 patients which, of course, led to an increase in cases and fatalities, is asking private businesses to run “vaccinated-only” establishments.
“Private businesses… I am asking them, and suggesting to them [that they] go to vaccine only admission,” he said. “I believe it’s in your business interest to run a vaccine-only establishment.”

Expect other Democratically-ran states to make similar demands, as Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and others tend to go lockstep with each other.
“Clearly, Cuomo – who managed to survive twin scandals involving lying about the number of deaths in NY State’s nursing homes and sexually harassing a platoon of aids (and wedding guests) – sees Delta as an opportunity to burnish his reputation as a leader,” Zero Hedge <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.zerohedge.com/political/cuomo-demands-private-businesses-ban-unvaccinated-customers" target="_blank">stated</a>. “Though we doubt the legislature will return to him the unilateral powers that enabled Cuomo to choke the state’s economy with some of the most restrictive rules in the country.”
Notably, Cuomo isn’t welding government power to force businesses to do so, rather he’s merely asking them, which gives him room to distance himself politically from the fallout.

ESA Gets Ready for Double Venus Flyby

Solar Orbiter and BepiColombo are set to make space history with two Venus flybys just 33 hours apart on 9 and 10 August.
The two spacecraft need the gravitational swingby to help them lose a little orbital energy in order to reach their destinations towards the center of the Solar System. The double <a href="https://phys.org/tags/flyby/">flyby</a> also offers an unprecedented opportunity to study the Venus environment from different locations at same time and, moreover, in locations that are not typically visited by a dedicated planetary orbiter.
Solar Orbiter, a partnership between ESA and NASA, will fly by Venus on 9 August with a <a href="https://phys.org/tags/closest+approach/">closest approach</a> of 7995 km at 04:42 UTC. Throughout its mission it makes repeated gravity assist flybys of Venus to get closer to the Sun, and to change its orbital inclination, boosting it out of the ecliptic plane, to get the best—and first—views of the Sun’s poles.
BepiColombo, a partnership between ESA and JAXA, will fly by Venus at 13:48 UTC on 10 August at an altitude of just 550 km. BepiColombo is on its way to the mysterious innermost planet of the solar system, Mercury. It needs flybys of Earth, Venus and Mercury itself, together with the spacecraft’s solar electric propulsion system, to help steer into Mercury <a href="https://phys.org/tags/orbit/">orbit</a> against the immense gravitational pull of the Sun.
It is not possible to take high-resolution imagery of Venus with the <a href="https://phys.org/tags/science+cameras/">science cameras</a> onboard either mission—Solar Orbiter must remain facing the Sun, and the main camera onboard BepiColombo is shielded by the transfer module that will deliver the two planetary orbiters to Mercury. However, two of BepiColombo’s three monitoring cameras will be taking photos around the time of close approach and in the days after as the planet fades from view.

The cameras provide black-and-white snapshots in 1,024 x 1,024 pixel resolution, and are positioned on the Mercury Transfer Module such that they also capture the spacecraft’s solar arrays and antennas. During the closest approach Venus will fill the entire field of view, but as the spacecraft changes its orientation the planet will be seen passing behind the spacecraft structural elements.
The images will be downloaded in batches, one by one, with the first image expected to be available in the evening of 10 August, and the majority on 11 August.
Furthermore, there may be an opportunity for Solar Orbiter’s SoloHI imager to observe the nightside of Venus in the week before closest approach. SoloHI usually takes images of the solar wind—the stream of charged particles constantly released from the Sun—by capturing the light scattered by electrons in the wind.

It is—unfortunately! – not expected that one spacecraft will be able to image the other. Even at their closest the spacecraft will be more than 575 thousand kilometers apart.

Multipoint science
Solar Orbiter has been acquiring data near-constantly since launch in February 2020 with its four in situ instruments that measure the environment around the spacecraft itself. Both Solar Orbiter and BepiColombo’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter and Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter will collect data on the magnetic and plasma environment of Venus from different locations. At the same time, JAXA’s Akatsuki spacecraft is in orbit around Venus, creating a unique constellation of datapoints. It will take many months to collate the coordinated flyby measurements and analyze them in a meaningful way.
The data collected during the flybys will also provide useful inputs to ESA’s future Venus orbiter, EnVision, which was selected earlier this year and will launch to Venus in the 2030s.
Where to next?
Solar Orbiter and BepiColombo both have one more flyby this year.
During the night of 1–2 October BepiColombo will see its destination for the first time, making its first of six flybys of Mercury—with this one from just 200 km distance. The two planetary orbiters will be delivered into Mercury orbit in late 2025, tasked with studying all aspects of this mysterious inner planet from its core to surface processes, magnetic field, and exosphere, to better understand the origin and evolution of a planet close to its parent star.
On 27 November, Solar Orbiter will make a final flyby of Earth at 460 km, kicking off the start of its main mission. It will continue to make regular flybys of Venus to progressively increase its orbit inclination to best observe the Sun’s uncharted polar regions, which is key to understanding the Sun’s 11 year activity cycle.
