Washington:
The top Republican in the US House of Representatives faced calls to apologize or resign Sunday after joking about hitting speaker Nancy Pelosi in the head with a gavel.
It was the latest round in a nasty spat between the Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy and Pelosi, the chamber's top Democrat.
Last week Pelosi called her Republican counterpart a "moron" for opposing mask mandates to fight the Covid-19 pandemic as the Delta variant causes a surge in cases in America.
At a fundraising dinner Saturday night in Tennessee, McCarthy spoke with optimism about prospects for his party retaking the House in mid-term elections next year.
And he went on to joke that -- should he become speaker -- he would struggle to resist striking Pelosi with the gavel that comes with the job.
"It will be hard not to hit her with it but I will bang it down," McCarthy said, according to a Washington Post reporter who was at the event.
Democrats pounced on McCarthy Sunday.
"Don't you think America has had enough political violence?," tweeted Representative Ted Lieu of California.
"You need to apologize for your statement, or resign," Lieu wrote.
Fellow California Representative Eric Swalwell said McCarthy "needs to resign," tweeting: "America has suffered enough violence around politics."
Representative Debbie Dingell of Michigan insisted McCarthy apologize right away.
"Language like this led to violence and death at the United States Capitol. @GOPLeader knows his words carry weight," Dingell said.
She appeared to be referring to then president Donald Trump's fiery language in a January 6 speech to a crowd that went on to overrun the US Capitol as Congress was certifying Joe Biden's election win.
Pelosi was a main target of the mob as it rampaged through the Capitol, in an insurrection that left five people dead.

Los Angeles:
TikTok star Anthony Barajas has died after being shot at a California movie theater in what authorities described as a "random and unprovoked" attack.
Barajas, 19, died Saturday after the shooting that also killed his 18-year-old friend Rylee Goodrich, said police in Corona in southern California said.
The victims were shot Monday at a theater that was showing "The Forever Purge," about a totalitarian government that one night a year allows any crime to be committed, including murder.
Theater staff found the two shot in the head after the movie, which was sparsely attended. Goodrich died at the scene and Barajas was rushed to a hospital.
"Based on the evidence provided to our office, this appears to be a random and unprovoked attack," local prosecutors said in a statement Friday.
Joseph Jimenez, 20, has been charged in the shooting. Police acting on tips from witnesses arrested him at his home the day after the assault.
Police have said he apparently acted alone and did not know the victims.
Barajas had nearly 930,000 followers on TikTok and was a reportedly a standout soccer player in high school.
The United States has a long and painful history of deadly gun violence, in the form of a steady daily toll of shootings as well as high-profile mass killings that have targeted schools, workplaces and shopping centers.
In 2012, a heavily armed man killed 12 people in a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, during the screening of the movie "The Dark Knight Rises".

Russian cosmonauts have given a video tour of the interior of a research module which briefly threw the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/russias-nauka-space-module-experiences-problem-after-docking-with-iss-report-2498158" target="_self">International Space Station out of control</a> on Thursday a few hours after docking.
Russian space officials said a software glitch and possible lapse in human attention were to blame for the mishap that caused the entire space station to pitch out of its normal flight position 250 miles above the Earth with seven crew members aboard.

Footage published late on Saturday showed cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov opening the hatches and giving a short tour inside the Nauka module, the Russian space agency Roscosmos said.
According to NASA's account of Thursday's incident, the mission flight director immediately declared a spaceflight emergency as engineers on the ground struggled to restore stability to the sprawling research satellite.
NASA and Roscosmos each said that the seven crew members - two Russian cosmonauts, three U.S. astronauts and two others from Japan and France - were never in any immediate danger.
Roscosmos, which this week spoke of plans to launch another Russian module to the station in November, has suffered a series of mishaps and corruption scandals, including during the construction of the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the country's far east where contractors were accused of embezzling state funds.

President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Sunday he does not expect the United States will return to lockdowns, despite the growing risks of COVID-19 infections posed by the Delta variant.
"I don't think we're going to see lockdowns," Fauci, who is also director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on ABC's "This Week."
"I think we have enough of the percentage of people in the country - not enough to crush the outbreak - but I believe enough to not allow us to get into the situation we were in last winter."
Although Fauci does not think the United States will need to shut down again as it did last year, he warned on ABC that "things are going to get worse" as the Delta variant continues to spread.
"We have 100 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not getting vaccinated," he said.
The average number of new cases reported each day has nearly doubled in the past 10 days and the number of hospitalized patients in many states is surging, according to a Reuters analysis.
At the same time, the number of Americans getting vaccinated has increased.
"The silver lining of this is that people are waking up to this and this may be a tipping point for those who have been hesitant," National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins told CNN on Sunday. "That's what desperately needs to happen if we're going to get this Delta variant put back in its place, because right now it's having a pretty big party in the middle of the country."

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Sunday Israel had "evidence" Iran was behind the deadly tanker <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/us-military-aids-israel-managed-tanker-attacked-off-oman-2499761" target="_self">attack off Oman</a> despite its denials, and warned his country could "send a message" in retaliation.
Bennett's statement came after Iran rejected Israel's "baseless accusations" it was responsible for the attack that killed two crewmen, and Tehran vowed to defend its interests after its arch-foe pushed for UN action against it.
"The intelligence evidence for this exists and we expect the international community will make it clear to the Iranian regime that they have made a serious mistake," the Israeli premier said at the weekly cabinet meeting in remarks conveyed by his office.
"In any case, we know how to send a message to Iran in our own way."
The MT Mercer Street, managed by prominent Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, was struck Thursday off the Omani coast.
A British security guard and a Romanian crew member were killed in what the US military and the vessel's operator Zodiac Maritime said appeared to be a drone strike.
Earlier Sunday, Iran denied involvement in the attack, with foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh saying Israel "must stop such baseless accusations", and noting "it is not their first time to direct such accusations at Iran".
"Iran will not hesitate for a moment to defend its... interests and national security," Khatibzadeh added in a televised press conference.
In Jerusalem, Bennett slammed Iran's "cowardly" denial, saying he could "determine with absolute certainty that Iran carried out the attack against the ship".
"Iran's aggressive conduct is dangerous not only to Israel, but also harms global interests, freedom of navigation and international trade," he said.
On Saturday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and agreed to work with other allies "to investigate the facts, provide support, and consider the appropriate next steps", a State Department statement said.
Maritime industry analysts Dryad Global said the attack was the fifth against a ship connected to Israel since February.
The oil products tanker was travelling from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates with no cargo aboard when it was hit, Zodiac Maritime said.
Tit-for-tat attacks
In recent months, there have been several reported attacks on Iranian ships that Tehran has linked to Israel.
In March, Iran's foreign ministry said it was "considering all options" in response to an attack on a cargo ship in the Mediterranean it blamed on Israel.
And in April, Tehran said its freighter Saviz was hit by an "explosion" in the Red Sea, after media reports said Israel had struck the ship.
The New York Times reported at the time that the Saviz had been targeted in an Israeli "retaliatory" attack after "Iran's earlier strikes on Israeli ships".
It came at a time of heightened tensions between the foes, with reports of a series of tit-for-tat strikes on shipping since early March.
In a report published in March that cited US and Middle East officials, the Wall Street Journal said Israel has targeted at least a dozen vessels bound for Syria, mostly carrying Iranian oil, since late 2019.
"The occupier regime knows that such (accusations) will not fix its problems. Whoever sows the wind reaps the whirlwind," Khatibzadeh said.
Iran has also accused Israel of being behind sabotage attacks against its nuclear sites, and killing a number of its scientists.
The tanker strike comes as Tehran and world powers are engaged in talks in Vienna in an effort to return Washington to a 2015 nuclear deal and lift sanctions, and bring Iran back in compliance with nuclear commitments it waived in retaliation for sanctions.
The accord was strained when in 2018 former president Donald Trump withdrew the US unilaterally and reimposed sanctions.
