Are We About to Face Rise in ECO-TERRORISM Once Covid-19 Pandemic is Over?

Amid post-Covid-19 economic recovery, the risk of climate-activist eco-terrorism is increasing, and with it the danger of political elites co-opting its motives to implement contentious “green” regulatory regimes.
As the world wrestled with Covid-19 in 2020, another sinister crisis, years in the making, was erupting beneath the radar. That crisis is eco-terrorism. Having been around for decades, ever since ex-Greenpeace activists began attacking commercial shipping vessels in the 1970s, eco-terrorism, in the FBI’s <a href="https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/testimony/the-threat-of-eco-terrorism" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">definition</a>, is “the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, subnational group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature.”
A more recent focal point for eco-terrorist activity has involved groups of radical environmentalists attacking infrastructure serving the global oil industry. Such foul play was reportedly <a href="https://apnews.com/article/wa-state-wire-washington-sabotage-business-9e56918250cd14c46251f9818a1ceed1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">involved</a> in the December 2020 derailment of a crude-oil train north of Seattle, as part of a wave of dozens of eco-terrorist attacks on crude-oil railway infrastructure gripping the State of Washington since the early part of that year.
The method apparently used in these incidents is to place a “shunt” device on the tracks that interferes with the low-level electrical current on the tracks, disrupting a train’s safety features and causing it to derail.
The US Justice Department has been <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-wdwa/press-release/file/1341141/download" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">placing</a> blame for these eco-terrorist attacks on left-wing anarchist groups. After a string of shunting incidents in Washington in January 2020, the Puget Sound Anarchists took responsibility for the attacks, stating on the website itsgoingdown.org “that the shunting activity was carried out in solidarity with Native American tribes in Canada seeking to prevent the construction of an oil pipeline across British Columbia, and with the express goal of disrupting BNSF [Railway] operations and supplies for the pipeline,” according to a criminal complaint eventually filed by the Justice Department in November 2020.
The nearly 1,200-mile Dakota Access Pipeline, transiting the Dakotas, Iowa and Illinois, has seen a similar running battle erupt between <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/in-federal-lawsuit-builder-of-dakota-access-pipeline-claims-environmental-groups-incited-eco-terrorism" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oil-pipeline</a> development and <a href="https://insidesources.com/rioting-dapl-protesters-close-highway-1806-set-fires-on-bridge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radical</a> environmentalists, with pipeline developer Energy Transfer having sued Greenpeace in 2017 over directing “rogue eco-terrorist groups” in a protest campaign that allegedly raised the cost of construction by $300 million. One incident in 2016 saw hundreds of protesters spark a riot on project land in which shots were fired on police officers and vehicles burned. The pipeline, which had its construction halted under the Obama Administration but reopened and completed under President Donald Trump, is <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/21/politics/dakota-access-pipeline-continue-operation/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">currently</a> under environmental review by the Biden Administration.
Consciously or not, the eco-terrorists targeting oil infrastructure may be pawns in the pressure for a globalized carbon-regulatory system and its billions of dollars of potential revenue. That is the theory <a href="https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/04/26/update-on-possible-ecoterror-attack-at-uah-scientists-christyspencer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">suggested</a> by Roy Spencer, a climate scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville who dissents on the implications of increased carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere, whose like-minded colleague John Christy’s office was allegedly targeted by seven shots fired during a “March for Science” event on campus in 2017.
Lending credence to this viewpoint is the fact that the Puget Sound Anarchists claiming responsibility for the January 2020 shunting attacks take a vehemently climate-activist stance on what they view as human-caused global warming. In one article <a href="https://itsgoingdown.org/climate-change-mutual-aid-and-state-failure-in-the-pacific-northwest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">posted</a> to its website, the argument is advanced that “Rapidly increasing ecological collapse and climate change brought on by the State’s mismanagement of ‘its’ resources and in cooperation with industrial capitalism’s overzealous exploitation of the land and sea have destabilized regions the world over and created climate refugees and destroyed communities.”

Yet these radical eco-terrorists are frequently portrayed in mainstream media outlets as, in some shape or form, noble <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/alisonwillmore/climate-change-fiction-is-rethinking-the-ecoterrorist" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crusaders</a> forced down the path of violence by an evil conservative juggernaut – embodied by the recent Trump Administration – that refuses to recognize the supposedly unassailable theory of human-caused climate change via fossil-fuel burning.
That is a dangerous generalization on several counts. There is a body of scientific evidence that casts <a href="https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/meet-the-man-who-has-exposed-the-great-climate-change-con-trick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">doubt</a> on the claims of anthropogenic climate change.
So-called “clean energy” – supposedly the Shangri-La taking us away from dirty fuels into environmentally-friendly electricity generation from source to user – is a slick exterior that conceals a profoundly <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/tilakdoshi/2020/08/02/the-dirty-secrets-of-clean-electric-vehicles/?sh=620fbda0650b" target="_blank">toxic truth</a>. Clean power installations including those used for solar and wind energy, along with electric-vehicle batteries, rely heavily on components made of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.dw.com/en/toxic-and-radioactive-the-damage-from-mining-rare-elements/a-57148185" target="_blank">rare-earth metals</a>, which are mined and processed via high-pollution methods and solvents, often in countries with appalling working conditions. In the city of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20150402-the-worst-place-on-earth" target="_blank">Baotou</a>, China alone, thousands of tons of chemically treated, mined rare earth are reportedly deposited each year in a five-mile-wide artificial lake after neodymium has been extracted for wind turbines, many of which have been installed in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1350811/In-China-true-cost-Britains-clean-green-wind-power-experiment-Pollution-disastrous-scale.html" target="_blank">the UK</a>. The pollution has ruined farmland and endangered residents along with their water sources.
With global oil demand rising again and trade – including that in hydrocarbon-based fuels – quickening a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, the risk of eco-terrorist incidents may be increasing too, as the radical environmentalists find new “motives” for attacks. But the motives may be less important than the implications. 
The real harm from eco-terrorism is how mainstream “progressive” establishment circles portray the terrorists, as quasi-sympathetic figures who are used as justification for burdensome regulatory regimes to address climate change. If the world would only address the supposedly existential threat of human-caused climate shifts by taxing consumers for their carbon-emitting energy consumption, as the theory implies, such eco-terrorists would become deradicalized and re-enter mainstream society. Already, these elites are gearing up to use any expedient pretext to make post-Covi-19 <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/11/oil-markets-fuel-demand-outlook.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recovery</a> more about costly and contentious regulatory regimes than coalescing and expanding that recovery’s economic gains.
The heavy guns of globalist dogma are fully deployed, trying to force a renewed effort for large-scale climate activism, due to the alleged interrelatedness between the coronavirus and climate change. Arthur Wyns, a climate change researcher at the World Health Organization (WHO), has <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/04/climate-change-coronavirus-linked/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">written</a> that “Well-resourced healthcare systems are essential to protect us from health security threats, including climate change.”
The Brookings Institution think tank is <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/blog/africa-in-focus/2021/03/01/recipe-for-a-green-recovery-carbon-taxes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">citing</a> the economic gains of pandemic recovery in the developing nations of Africa as justification for taxing those gains to fund “green transformations” in a “recovery and sustainability program.”
To top it all, on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-climate-change-greatest-threat-us-security" target="_blank">remarked</a> in an address to Air Force personnel in the UK that the US military Joint Chiefs of Staff have told him “the greatest physical threat facing America” is global warming allegedly caused by humans.
What this high-flying language does is provide an underhanded public platform for the radicalized, rather narrow-minded worldviews of climate activists who have become terrorists. What it denotes, in reality, is a system of <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/05/21/states-carbon-pricing-490021" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">taxation</a> funneling money into unaccountable bureaucracies. Biden’s new post-Covid spending proposals are rife with carbon-regulatory measures and a rollback of Trump-era tax cuts, and though they do not explicitly delineate a “carbon tax,” the US president is apparently still open to the <a href="https://www.kirkland.com/publications/kirkland-alert/2021/06/biden-administration-budget-and-green-book" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">idea</a>.
The right-wing Heritage Foundation <a href="https://www.heritage.org/taxes/report/post-covid-19-tax-policy-keeping-taxes-low-ensure-robust-recovery" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">has its own</a> ideological ax to grind in the realm of direct and indirect carbon taxes, but it nonetheless hits closer to the mark in a report pointing out that a blanket carbon-taxation system would pummel individual consumers through increased energy costs passed onto them by big oil companies while destroying jobs, allowing for “an unprecedented expansion of the federal government while making Americans poorer and more dependent on Washington.”
Those who stand most to profit from “anarchist” and “environmentalist” terrorism against the oil industry, then, are not the on-the-ground perpetrators but the establishment figures who are subtly seeking to co-opt its message, using it to justify a bloated climate-activist regulatory regime. That path leads to an oppressive, oligopolistic system of unaccountable government and corporate cabals harming the economic positions of citizens and smaller companies. 
Militantly attacking oil as evil while upholding the ephemera of climate activism as sacrosanct is a dangerous path, deflecting attention from the real problem of toxic pollution in the industries supplying the “clean” energy sector with its componentry. Attempting to divert the economic gains of post-pandemic recovery under the noble heading of environmental protection is a tactic of compulsion – one that distorts the cause of environmentalism when it so desperately needs honest critique.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson covered how the nationwide phenomenon of skyrocketing house prices is being driven by Wall Street outbidding normal Americans trying to buy homes.
“Have you tried to buy a house recently in this country? Suddenly prices are out of control,” Carlson pointed out Friday on his show “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“They’re up everywhere. They’re up in San Jose, California – which is already way overvalued for like 20 years – but they’re still going up. Homes are going for a lot above asking price everywhere.”
“It doesn’t seem normal,” Carlson continued. “There’s been a lot of moving within this country, but we’re not watching a conventional housing market. There’s something else going on.”
“And in fact, there is. The Wall Street Journal in a recent piece found that private equity firms like BlackRock are purchasing entire neighborhoods of single-family homes and turning them into rentals…What does this mean for the country?” Carlson asked.
Chronicles magazine editor Pedro Gonzales joined Carlson to discuss the implications behind Wall Street’s mass buy-up of houses across the country.
“Plundering the future is what financial institutions like BlackRock are doing by buying up tons of real estate,” Gonzales told Carlson.
“Home ownership gives people a stake in society. It’s a way to build generational wealth. It’s the foundation of the middle-class and part of the American dream. And permanent capital is now robbing Americans of that dream, saying ‘you’ll own nothing and be happy,'” Gonzales continued, referring to the World Economic Forum’s <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/alex-jones-lays-out-the-secrets-to-the-great-reset/">Great Reset</a> agenda.

“They’re killing the dream and giving us a nightmare of dispossession,” Gonzales continued. “And they’re doing this to underwrite pensions and pad bottom lines by raising housing prices, gobbling up single-family homes and fueling another speculative investor-driven home price bubble; that if and when it bursts, the same people they priced out of homes will end up subsidizing the bailout.”
Part of the WEF’s Great Reset agenda touts the total abolishment of private property by 2030 under the guise of fighting climate change.
“Welcome to the year 2030. Welcome to my city – or should I say, ‘our city.’ I don’t own anything. I don’t own a car. I don’t own a house. I don’t own any appliances or any clothes,” Ida Auken wrote on behalf of the WEF in 2016.
“Once in a while I get annoyed about the fact that I have no real privacy. Nowhere I can go and not be registered. I know that, somewhere, everything I do, think and dream of is recorded. I just hope that nobody will use it against me.”

Maher: How We Emerge From Pandemic Is Turning Into a ‘Big Liability’ for Democrats

Liberal talk show host Bill Maher said Friday that the COVID-19 pandemic is “over”, but noted the way Democrats are reacting to that is a “big liability” heading into the 2022 midterms.
“I think how we react to coming out of this is looking like a big liability to the Democrats. I think somehow — sometimes their whole attitude toward this was a liability,” Maher admitted on his show “Real Time.”

Maher pointed to the Democrats’ overzealous fear of the coronavirus as a sign Democrats have taken pandemic precautions too far, citing a Gallup poll showing <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/350480/life-becomes-quasi-normal-virus-fears-fade.aspx">71% of Democrats</a> believe that otherwise healthy people should stay at home as much as possible.
“I see people on the street walking outside with a mask on. Like you f*cking moron, I just want to shout at them outside the car, you’re a moron. You never could get it outside, really, and you’re alone walking on the street with a mask?” Maher exclaimed.
“It’s over,” Maher reiterated. “Can we just say it’s over? I know it was great fun to have a pandemic and order Grubhub every night.”
Maher then urged vaccinated people not to “be afraid of the person who isn’t” vaccinated, adding that “somebody is always going to spread something.”
“You can’t just hide forever,” Maher said. “Everything in life is a risk.”

Biden plans to reverse Trump’s Alaska policy. Here’s why it matters.

On Friday the Biden administration revealed <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/11/us/politics/tongass-national-forest-alaska.html">plans to reinstate</a> environmental protections preventing logging and mining in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, which the Trump administration had discarded. The 17 million acres in southeastern Alaska — the largest national forest in the US — have been a political battleground for over two decades, bouncing back and forth between the interests of logging industries and climate activists.
In 2001, President Bill Clinton finalized the “roadless rule,” which prohibited road construction on 60 million acres of forested land across the US and heavily restricted commercial logging and mining. But in October of 2020, then-President Donald Trump reversed these protections when he made the Tongass Forest <a href="https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2020-23984.pdf?utm_campaign=pi%20subscription%20mailing%20list&utm_source=federalregister.gov&utm_medium=email">exempt from the rule</a>, doing what many developers and politicians in Alaska had been calling for since the Clinton era. But this reversal didn’t last for long.
Since his time on the campaign trail, President Joe Biden has been vocal about climate action, specifically in contrast with the policies that the Trump administration had passed. After the US, under Trump, <a href="https://www.vox.com/21545960/paris-agreement-accord-exit-leaves-trump-biden-election-2020-climate-change">left the Paris climate agreement</a> and engineered the largest <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/364/6443/881">reduction of protected lands</a> in US history, Biden entered office ready to undo the damage. On the same day Biden was sworn in, on January 20, 2021, he signed <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-protecting-public-health-and-environment-and-restoring-science-to-tackle-climate-crisis/">an executive order</a> titled “Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis,” which includes goals to reduce climate pollution, and to review and revoke action items set forth by the previous administration.
One of the most notable was the revocation of the March 2019 permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline. The project, begun in 2008 and only officially <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/6/10/22526803/keystone-xl-oil-gas-biden-climate-change">called off this month</a>, has faced backlash at every stage of its development. Canceled by the Obama administration in 2015, and then renewed in 2017 when Trump invited TC Energy, the pipeline’s Canadian developer, to reapply for a permit, the Keystone XL is a perfect example of the back-and-forth that climate politics can have depending on who is in office.
The Tongass National Forest is yet another example. From a developer’s perspective, Alaska’s natural resources make it a gold mine. Its old growth forests make it ideal for harvesting timber, its coastal plains are plentiful in prospective drilling sites for oil and natural gas, and developing these opportunities could <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/11/climate/tongass-biden-climate.html?action=click&module=Spotlight&pgtype=Homepage">boost the state’s economy</a>. No specifics as to how the “roadless rule” reversal will be carried out have been announced, apart from the intent to “<a href="https://www.reginfo.gov/public/do/eAgendaViewRule?pubId=202104&RIN=0596-AD51">repeal or replace</a>” it, but Alaskan officials are aware of the economic loss, and have been vocal about the change.
“The Biden administration’s announcement is an unacceptable whipsaw in federal policy just months after an exhaustively-reviewed final rule was issued by the Trump administration that struck the right balance between conserving the lands we cherish and fostering opportunities for hard-working Alaskans,” Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) said in a joint <a href="https://www.murkowski.senate.gov/press/release/alaska-delegation-responds-to-biden-administration-actions-to-suppress-se-alaskas-economy">statement</a> which also included comments from fellow Alaska Republicans Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Don Young.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, also expressed his disapproval of the Biden action on Twitter and later added, “We will use every tool available to push back on the latest imposition.”
Biden is currently attending the annual G7 summit, which is meeting this year in Cornwall, England. World leaders are expected to address environmental policy on Sunday.
While politicians paint a picture of an oppressive federal government that would deny normal Alaskans access to “jobs and prosperity,” the narrative rings a bit hollow when set against actual feedback from the public. In 2019, the US Forest Service <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/USDAFS/2019/02/08/file_attachments/1152423/Alaska%20Roadless%20Rule%20-%20Scoping%20Public%20Comment%20Summary.pdf">released a summary</a> of over 140,000 comments on the “roadless rule” from the public which overwhelmingly supported the restrictions on forest development. In fact, one of the main points of rationale as to why the public thinks the “roadless rule” should remain was that it is vital to the tourism and fishing industries.
According to research by an economic development organization called the <a href="http://www.seconference.org/sites/default/files/Southeast%20Alaska%20by%20the%20Numbers%202020.pdf">Southeast Conference</a>, in 2019 Alaska’s timber industry (along with warehousing, utilities, and transport) only provided 4 percent of Alaskans with jobs in contrast to the 18 percent that were employed by tourism. Commercial fishing, tourism, and recreation are the fastest growing job sectors in southeast Alaska, according to the research. The Southeast Conference has not issued an official statement, but its executive director, Robert Venables, <a href="https://gov.alaska.gov/newsroom/2021/06/11/dunleavy-disappointed-in-biden-administration-decision-to-suppress-alaskas-economic-opportunities/">joined Gov. Dunleavy’s statement</a>, in which he accused multiple administrations of “playing ping-pong” with Alaskans and the resources of the state.
In addition to providing jobs, as the United States’ <a href="https://alaskawild.org/places-we-protect/tongass-national-forest/">largest national forest</a>, the Tongass plays a significant ecological role in absorbing carbon produced in the US. In fact, the United States Geological Survey recently estimated that if no trees were lost through logging and the land were left unmanaged in the Tongass, its carbon storage could increase by up to <a href="https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1826/pp1826.pdf">27 percent</a> by the end of the century.

The Tongass is also home to a thriving wildlife population, but Trump’s reversal of the “roadless rule” put this in danger. On land, the state of Alaska is home to <a href="https://alaskawild.org/places-we-protect/tongass-national-forest/">95 percent</a> of America’s brown bear population, and the Tongass specifically contains the highest concentration of brown bears on the planet, while the forest’s <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5408055.pdf">17,000 miles of clean freshwater</a> provide optimal spawning conditions for wild salmon. Due to its high populations, the Tongass is sometimes called a “<a href="http://www.americansalmonforest.org/">salmon forest</a>” and, as it produces <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd554592.pdf">$60 million</a> of wild salmon annually, this name is not far-fetched. But, if not for the “roadless rule,” this might have changed. Logging around a stream causes <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/why-are-there-so-few-salmon-left?qt-news_science_products=0#qt-news_science_products">runoff like silt or dirt</a> into the water, which can smother developing eggs, while dams, often used to maneuver logs down waterways, disorient the fish and disrupt their natural migratory patterns.
While this is a loss that can affect any Alaskan, to Alaskan Natives, losing wild salmon and the forests that house them means much more than a declining food source. <a href="https://www.seconference.org/sites/default/files/Southeast%20Alaska%20by%20the%20Numbers%202020.pdf">Twenty-three percent</a> of the region’s population comes from the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian tribes, who have been fighting for recognition and for better treatment of their ancestral land which includes the expansive Tongass Forest.
While logging industries threaten food sources, <a href="https://www.hcn.org/issues/52.10/indigenous-affairs-forests-eleven-alaska-native-tribes-offer-new-way-forward-on-managing-the-tongass">cultural resources</a> like Western red and Alaskan yellow cedar trees, which many communities use to make traditional regalia, baskets, and totem poles, are also threatened. “Cedar is the warp in the basket of who we are as a people. We weave our way around the cedar, keeping ourselves connected, strong and able to carry the tools and resources forward for the next generation,” Marina Anderson, a Haida and Tlingit woman who serves as the tribal administrator of the Organized Village of Kasaan, said in an article for <a href="https://www.juneauempire.com/news/resilient-peoples-and-placemonument-trees-and-cedar-stewardship-on-the-tongass-national-forest/">Juneau Empire</a>.
Anderson recently helped to organize a workshop on cultural uses of forest resources, taught by Native Alaskans, for employees of the United States Forest Service (USFS). For years, the USFS has provided manufacturers with commercial timber from the Tongass without communication with Native populations. The workshop aimed to teach USFS workers how to distinguish different types of trees that can be used to make canoes and totem poles, or trees that are rare and should be protected. While this type of cross-cultural exchange does not target the heavy hitters of industry or politics, it does make an impact on the people carrying out the work.
