Police said they had arrested a man for a bomb hoax near to the media centre set up to cover the G7 summit south west England after officers were forced to evacuate a hotel in response to reports of a suspicious package early on Thursday morning.
Officers were called out to the hotel in Falmouth, where most media covering the meeting of the global leaders are based, at about 3.15 a.m. local time after the package was found.
A Royal Navy bomb disposal unit was called in and declared it unviable, but only after about 100 people from a hotel and surrounding properties were evacuated.
Police said a 20-year-old man from Falmouth had been arrested on suspicion of a bomb hoax and was now in custody.
U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in Britain on Wednesday evening and he is staying at the seaside resort of Carbis Bay, about 25 miles away from Falmouth.
There is a large security operation in place for the G7 event, the first in-person meeting of the leaders of major developed economies for nearly two years, with 5,000 police officers drafted in from across Britain.
Police have closed off roads and coastal paths to Carbis Bay, the small seaside resort which is hosting the event, and erected a steel fence around the venue, with armed officers on patrol.
Activists have vowed to stage disruptive and annoying protests during the event to highlight their causes.

Like many of us, Emma has had her travel plans derailed by coronavirus. But after months of delay, the white rhino has arrived in Japan and is looking for love.
The mild-mannered five-year-old comes by way of Taiwan's Leofoo Safari Park, where she beat a herd of competitors for the chance to find a companion and breed.
She had been scheduled for transfer to the Saitama Tobu zoo outside Tokyo in March, but complications caused by the pandemic pushed back her departure.
"After some delays due to the coronavirus, Emma, a southern white rhino, arrived at our zoo on the evening of 8th June," the Saitama Tobu zoo said in a statement.

"We slowly opened the shipping container which was placed in front of her sleeping room. Emma, without showing any signs of shyness, went straight into the sleeping room," it added.
The rhino used the extra time in Taiwan to prepare for the move, with keepers using Japanese for words like "come" and "no" to get her ready for her new home.
Safari staff said she was picked from a herd of 23 rhinos because of her even temper and slender physique.
"Emma was chosen because of her mild personality... and her smaller size also makes it easier to ship overseas," Sean Wu, the park's chief veterinarian and animal manager, told AFP earlier this year.
"She seldom gets into fights with other rhinos or snatches others' food."
She is expected to be on show to the public in Japan for several weeks, but she also has the more serious business of getting acquainted with her first suitor: 10-year-old Moran.
Zoo breeding programmes have played a key role in repopulating southern white rhino herds.
The species currently numbers around 19,000, found in the wild across southern Africa, according to the conservation group Save the Rhino.
They were nearly wiped out in the last century but managed to recover, thanks to conservation efforts.
Their northern cousins were not so lucky. Only two remain, both females, rendering the species functionally extinct.
Leofoo Safari Park imported eight rhinos from Africa in 1979 and now has the most successful breeding programme in Asia, with 23 animals in its herd.
Rhino poaching is fuelled by a market for their horns in Asia -- especially China and Vietnam.
Horns are made of nothing more than keratin, the same material as fingernails and hair. But scammers erroneously market horns as an aphrodisiac or cancer cure.

A microscopic organism has wriggled back to life and reproduced asexually after lying frozen in the vast permafrost lands of northeastern Siberia for 24,000 years.
Russian scientists found the tiny, ancient animal called the bdelloid rotifer in soil taken from the river Alazeya in Russia's region of Yakutia in the far north.
The bdelloid rotifer, a multicellular organism found in freshwater habitats across the world, is known to be able to withstand extreme cold.
Previous research suggested it could survive for a decade when frozen at -20 degrees Celsius.
This new case, which was detailed in a study in the journal Current Biology, is by far the creature's longest recorded survival period in a frozen state.
The organism was recovered from samples taken 3.5 metres below ground. The material was dated from between 23,960 and 24,485 years ago, the study said.
Land encased in permafrost - where the ground is frozen all year round - has for years thrown up startling scientific discoveries.
Scientists earlier revived microscopic worms called nematodes from sediment in two places in northern Siberia that were dated over 30,000 years old.

Blocked by US President Joe Biden, Canada's TC Energy said Wednesday it had officially terminated the Keystone XL Pipeline project, throwing in the towel on a controversial initiative opposed by environmental activists.
TC Energy will coordinate with regulators, indigenous groups and other stakeholders "to meet its environmental and regulatory commitments and ensure a safe termination of and exit from the project," the company said in a press release, confirming that it had notified the government of the province of Alberta.
Biden formally rescinded a permit for the pipeline, first proposed in 2008, by executive order on his first day in office in January 2021.
He had vowed during the presidential campaign to end the project over environmental concerns, a reversal of the stance taken by predecessor Donald Trump.
While the project has long been backed by Canada, Keystone XL had been opposed by environmentalists and indigenous groups, who have organized rallies against the pipeline in Washington, Ottawa and in the affected areas throughout the last decade.
The 1,210-mile (1,950-kilometer) pipeline, starting in 2023, was to transport up to 830,000 barrels of oil per day from the Alberta oil sands to Nebraska and then through an existing system to refineries in coastal Texas.
TC Energy argued that bringing so much oil from friendly, neighboring Canada would reduce US dependence on the Middle East and Venezuela by up to 40 per cent.
The State Department estimated the plan would have created 42,000 temporary jobs over the two-year construction period, but opponents noted that just 35 permanent jobs would be created for pipeline maintenance.
The Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan are likely to pay the price for the pipeline termination, according to experts.
Alberta will "explore all options to recoup the government's investment" in the pipeline, a statement by the province said, adding that it would ultimately be on the hook for about Can$1.3 billion (US$1.1 billion).
'Dirty' Oil
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said he was "disappointed and frustrated" with the cancellation.
"Alberta will continue to play an important role in a reliable, affordable North American energy system," he said. "We will work with our US partners to ensure that we are able to meet US energy demands through the responsible development and transportation of our resources."
The US Environmental Protection Agency had raised an objection to the project under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and former president Barack Obama vetoed Congress's approval of the Keystone proposal in 2015.
Trump, however, supported the pipeline as part of a push for "gleaming new infrastructure" and tried to revive the operation, but was thwarted by court rulings to halt construction in 2018 -- before again approving a permit in early 2020.
Alberta's tar sands are considered to have the "dirtiest" oil on the planet. Unlike traditional crude which gushes from a well, tar sand oil must be dug up and essentially melted with steaming hot water before it can be refined. It results in huge lakes of polluted water and the strip-mining of millions of acres of once-pristine boreal forests.
Environmentalists argue tar sand oil contains a harmful and corrosive component -- bitumen -- which makes pipeline ruptures or leaks more likely and carries greater health and safety risks.
TC Energy argued that buried pipelines are far safer for transporting oil than ships or trains, but critics noted the existing portion of the Keystone pipeline developed a dozen leaks in its first year of operation.
Kendall Mackey, a campaigner with the activist group @350, said the project's demise was a harbinger of more casualties as environmentalists challenge fossil fuels.
"The fight to stop Keystone XL was never about one pipeline," Mackey said in a news release. "This victory puts polluters and their financiers on notice: terminate your fossil fuel projects now -- or a relentless mass movement will stop them for you."
"After more than 10 years -- we have finally defeated an oil and gas giant! Keystone XL is DEAD! We are dancing in our hearts for this victory!" the Indigenous Environmental Network tweeted Wednesday.

Argentina's president apologized Wednesday after going viral for stating that modern-day Mexicans originate from indigenous peoples, Brazilians "from the jungle" and his own country's inhabitants come from Europe.
"I am a Europeanist. I am someone who believes in Europe," Alberto Fernandez said as he and visiting Spanish leader Pedro Sanchez met with business leaders in Buenos Aires.
Mexican poet Octavio Paz, he claimed, once wrote that "Mexicans came from the Indians, Brazilians from the jungle, but we Argentines came from boats, and they were boats that came from there, from Europe. And that is how we built our society."
Hours later, he apologized on Twitter.
"In the first half of the 20th century we received more than five million immigrants who lived with our native peoples," he said, adding: "We are proud of our diversity."
Fernandez said he "did not mean to offend anyone" but to anyone who was, "my apologies."
A video of his original statement went viral, drawing numerous reactions in Brazil.
Reading Fernandez's statement, "I began to understand better why after World War II the Nazi war criminals hid in Argentina," Brazilian Senator Ciro Nogueira said on Twitter.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted a picture of himself wearing a feather headband and surrounded by a group of indigenous people under the headline "JUNGLE!" but with no comment -- a picture that led to a series of memes.
Former Mexican president Felipe Calderon wanted to know if the quote really was from Mexican author Paz, a Nobel laureate.
"That could have been said by (Mexican comedian) Cantinflas, or (Argentine comedians) Les Luthiers, but Octavio Paz? I hope he cites the source," Calderon tweeted.

After some fans booed players ‘taking a knee’ before the start of the England vs Austria game last night, manager Gareth Southgate falsely suggested that the reaction was an attack on black people.
Some spectators jeered the virtue signaling gesture, which was introduced a year ago after the death of George Floyd and is inextricably linked with the Black Lives Matter movement.
“Players have been taking a knee to highlight racial injustice,” the BBC inaccurately reported, failing to represent clubs and players who have specifically stopped taking a knee because they are uncomfortable that it represents a political act and isn’t some vague nod to “equality.”
England manager Gareth Southgate echoed this fallacy, stating, “It’s not something on behalf of our black players that I wanted to hear because it feels as though it is a criticism of them.”
Except it isn’t criticism of them, as Southgate himself acknowledged in a subsequent statement when he said, “some people think it’s a political stand that they don’t agree with.”
And is it any wonder some people don’t agree with it?

Black Lives Matter is a hateful, violent, extremist organization that has desecrated statues and memorials and violently attacked and harassed people who refuse to offer total obsequiousness and support.
The movement is also supremely hypocritical given that it only cares about black lives that are taken by white people, despite every statistic showing the biggest threat to black lives, in both the U.S. and the UK, is other black people.
The gesture itself is also onerous because it carries with it the threat of punishment by unhinged social media mobs directed towards any player who refuses to perform it.
The notion that fans who pay huge sums to watch football players who get paid hundreds of thousands of pounds a week shouldn’t be allowed to express their opinion on the behavior of those players is also absurd.
As we document in the video below, everyone should be encouraged to exercise their own free speech by booing players who take a knee.
This is especially important for fans who plan on attending the Euro football championship later this month.
