Kabul:
At least 11 civilians including four women and three children were killed when a roadside bomb struck a bus in Afghanistan, officials said Sunday, in the latest attack targeting passenger vehicles in the violence-wracked country.
The attack occurred on Saturday evening in the western province of Badghis, raising fears of fresh violence in the months ahead as the US military continues to pull out its last remaining troops from the country.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast but Badghis governor Hessamuddin Shams accused the Taliban of planting the bomb.
Another official from the province, Khodadad Tayeb, confirmed the toll and said that the bus fell into a valley after it was hit by the bomb.
Saturday's attack came after a series of blasts targeted passenger buses in Kabul this week.
The jihadist Islamic State claimed two back-to-back attacks on buses in Kabul.
Violence has soared in recent weeks as government forces and the Taliban clash in near-daily battles across the rugged countryside, with the militants appearing to focus on capturing new territory and battering checkpoints and bases near Kabul.
The Taliban said on Saturday that they have "captured the district of Deh Yak" in the province of Ghazni, about 150 kilometres south of Kabul.
The authorities said they had only "relocated" their forces from the area.
Ghazni is strategically located on the main road from Kabul to Kandahar, the former bastion of the Taliban in the south. The province sees regular fighting between the two warring sides.
In 2018, the Taliban briefly seized the provincial capital Ghazni, which has the same name as the province, in an all-out attack that left several government buildings torched and destroyed.
The surge in violence across Afghanistan comes as the US military continues to withdraw its remaining 2,500 troops from Afghanistan.
President Joe Biden has ordered the military to complete the pullout by the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
But as the Americans pack up, experts fear Afghanistan will remain home to a number of jihadist groups.

British health minister Matt Hancock said on Sunday it was too early to say whether the government would stick to its plan to fully lift COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in England on June 21.
Hancock said there had been a "very significant" impact from the delta variant of COVID-19 first detected in India over the last month, which is now the dominant strain in England, according to official estimates.
He pointed to a renewed rise in COVID-19 cases but said he had been reassured by a broadly flat rate of hospitalisations and deaths as officials consider plans to end the lockdown.
"It's too early to make a final decision on that," Hancock told Sky News.
"The prime minister and I and the team will be looking at all the data over this week. We've said that we'll give people enough time ahead of the June 21 date.
"We are not saying 'No' to June 21 at this point," he added.
Hancock said it was important that people receive both doses of COVID-19 vaccines as the data showed this could protect effectively against the delta variant.
Britain's swift vaccine rollout had weakened, but not broken, the link between the virus, hospitalisation and death, Hancock said.
Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he could see nothing in the data that would derail the plan to end lockdown restrictions, although caution was needed.
Britain's overall death count from the pandemic stands at 127,836 and is the sixth-highest in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Colombo:
Marine experts in Sri Lanka recovered the data recorder of the Singapore-flagged fire-stricken cargo ship sinking slowly off the country's capital, officials have said as authorities appointed a panel to look into the impact of the incident on the marine environment.
There were no signs of oil or chemical spills have detected so far, Sri Lanka Ports Authority said in a statement on Saturday.
Sri Lankan Navy, Indian Coast Guard, salvos and local authorities capable of responding to any signs of oil pollution or debris are presently on the scene and are keenly monitoring the situation around the clock, the statement said.
Experts from the Merchant Shipping Secretariat with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy on Saturday recovered the Voyage Data Recorder or VDR commonly known as the "Ship's Black Box" of MV X-Press Pearl.
The cargo vessel, carrying a consignment of chemicals and raw materials for cosmetics from Hazira in Gujarat caught fire on May 20 in Sri Lankan waters outside the port of Colombo.
All 25 crew members of the ship -- of Indian, Chinese, Filipino and Russian nationality -- were rescued on May 21.
The recovered VDR is now been handed over to the local law enforcement agencies to assist ongoing investigations.
VDR is an instrument safely installed on a ship to continuously record vital information related to the operation of a vessel. VDR data on a ship can be used as vital information during an accident investigation.
A team of 14 experts from the Government Analyst's Department has been appointed to look into the impact of the fire aboard the ship on the marine environment. They will collect seawater samples to assess the impact.
Meanwhile, the aft or stern portion of the distressed ship is remaining on the seabed at a depth of about 21 meters, and the forward section continues to settle down slowly, the statement said.
An initial inspection has been carried out by divers to assess the condition of the hull.
Sri Lanka's Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has so far recorded statements from about 20 crew members and officials on the incident.
The has taken custody of the vessel's VDR.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore on Thursday started its own investigation into the massive fire on the chemical-laden cargo vessel, sailing under the country's flag.

Baghdad:
The Iraqi army said Sunday two drones were destroyed above a base housing US troops, one month after the same base was targeted by an armed drone.
The US military's C-RAM defence system was activated to shoot down the drones above the Ain al-Assad base, located in Iraq's western desert, the Iraqi military said.
Several hours earlier a rocket was shot down above Baghdad airport, "without causing casualties or damage," said Colonel Wayne Marotto, spokesman for the US-led military coalition in Iraq.
The coalition was sent to Iraq to help the country's military fight the Islamic State jihadist group -- a campaign that Baghdad declared won in late 2017.
The US consistently blames Iran-linked Iraqi factions for rocket attacks against Iraqi installations housing its personnel.
Since the start of this year there have been 39 attacks against US interests in Iraq.
The vast majority have been bombs against logistics convoys, while 14 were rocket attacks, some of them claimed by pro-Iran factions, who aim to pressure Washington into withdrawing all their troops.
The use of drones against American interests by these factions is a relatively new tactic, although the US military has previously accused pro-Iran Iraqi groups of helping Yemen's Huthi rebels carry out attacks using such devices against Saudi interests.

Elon Musk, the CEO of technological giant Tesla was targeted by a notorious group of hackers who are liable for committing some of the biggest digital scams in the recent past.
TMZ reported that the anonymous account has caused a lot of grief for different organizations including PayPal, Scientology is now targeting the Tesla CEO.
In their latest video, they have targeted Elon, claiming the power he uses over cryptocurrency markets and the arrogant way he uses it has gone far enough especially as it pertains to Bitcoin, which has reacted uncontrollably to Elon's words of late.
Anonymous affirms that even though Elon has "positioned himself as concerned about the environment with Tesla''s pivot away from Bitcoin, he doesn't practice what he preaches within the company itself- hurling many allegations against him and Tesla's practices at large," TMZ reported.
The anonymous further slammed Elon on a personal note, saying he suffers from a "superiority complex"- noting he once dubbed himself the "Emperor of Mars" - and that he is hurting working-class people and their prospects by his constant crypto trolling.
Concluding his grievance note, the anonymous added that he thinks "Elon is not a friend to the common man", something they considered themselves to be.
Elon, recently announced that the company has stopped accepting bitcoin as payment for its cars out of concern- that it will contribute to greater consumption of fossil fuels.
The business magnate and SpaceX founder shared a statement on Twitter on Wednesday about the same. Tesla had only just started accepting bitcoin in late March.
The 49-year-old industrial designer also said that Tesla will no longer sell any more of the USD 1.5 billion stashes of bitcoin it purchased earlier this year. Tesla sold some of that bitcoin in the first quarter of 2021, which wound up helping pad the company's quarterly profit figures.
Elon has also hyped another cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, which Tesla has not invested in. He has called Dogecoin, which was invented as a joke to satirize bitcoin, his favourite cryptocurrency and "the people's crypto."
