We can’t do this to Children! – Shocking 18th update on Adverse Reactions to the Covid Vaccines released by UK Government / MHRA

<p><strong>The UK Government have released their eighteenth report highlighting adverse reactions to both the Pfizer / BioNTech and Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccines that have occurred since the roll-out began on the 8th December 2020, and this may be one of the most important analysis of the shocking statistics we’ve ever done considering the fact the MHRA have officially given the Pfizer mRNA jab emergency use authorisation for use in children over the age of 12.</strong></p>
<p><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting" target="_blank">The U.K. Governments report</a> (<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting#annex-1-vaccine-analysis-print" target="_blank"><em>which you can find here</em></a>) has collated data inputted up to the 26th May via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme. At this point an estimated 14 million first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 24.3 million first doses of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine had been administered. There had also been around 10.6 million second doses of the Pfizer jab, and 13.4 million second doses of the AstraZeneca jab administered by this date, alongside 0.4 million first doses of the Moderna vaccine.</p>

<p>As of the 26th May the MHRA had received 183,752 reports of adverse reactions to the Pfizer jab, and 695,214 reports of adverse reactions to the AstraZeneca jab, bringing the total number of adverse reactions to both jabs to a truly shocking total of 878,966. However the MHRA states that <strong>only 1% – 10% of adverse reactions are actually reported</strong> to the Yellow Card scheme.</p>
<p>The MHRA also had this to say on the reported adverse reactions to the Covid vaccines in the first report released at the beginning of February 2021 –</p>
<p><em>A high proportion of people vaccinated in the vaccination campaign so far are very elderly, many of whom will also have pre-existing medical conditions. Older age and chronic underlying illnesses make it more likely that coincidental adverse events will occur, especially given the millions of people vaccinated. It is therefore important that we carefully review these reports to distinguish possible side effects from illness that would have occurred irrespective of vaccination.</em></p>
<p>But we assume that they’re hoping you’ve forgotten they’ve said that as the MHRA now admit in their report that –</p>
<p><em>Adverse reactions are reported less frequently in older adults (over 55 years) than in younger people.</em></p>
<p>The MHRA also state within their report that –</p>
<p><em>All vaccines and medicines have some side effects. These side effects need to be continuously balanced against the expected benefits in preventing illness.</em></p>
<p>If that really is the case why on earth have they given an experimental gene therapy with no long term safety data, and extremely concerning short term safety data (as you’ll see within our analysis), emergency use authorisation for use in children?</p>
<p>Have they not read <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://dailyexpose.co.uk/2021/05/30/shocking-86-of-children-suffered-an-adverse-reaction-to-the-pfizer-covid-vaccine-in-clinical-trial/" target="_blank"><span>the report</span></a> on the extremely short and small clinical trial which found 86% of the children suffered an adverse reaction ranging from mild to extremely serious after just a single dose of the Pfizer jab?</p>
<p>Have they not seen the statistics which show children do not suffer serious disease if they are allegedly infected with the alleged Covid-19 virus?</p>
<p>If you’re thinking of allowing your child to have the experimental Pfizer mRNA “vaccine” then we’re sure you’ll change your mind after seeing the frightening adverse reactions that have been reported to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.</p>
<p>We took a dive into the report and this is what we found…</p>

<p>Are you aware that reports have been made to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme of people going blind after having the Pfizer jab? We doubt it.</p>
<p>Well we can confirm that as of the 26th May 2021 a total number of 38 people are now blind after having the Pfizer mRNA vaccine. As well as 151 people who have been left visually impaired, and 2 people who suffered sudden visual loss. In all there have been 3,032 eye disorders reported as adverse reactions to the Pfizer jab.</p>

<p>But don’t even think about passing on the Pfizer jab to hold out for the emergency approval of the AstraZeneca jab for use in children because the number of people who have gone blind is even worse. There have been 209 reports made of people suffering blindness, 526 reports of people left visually impaired, and 4 reports of sudden visual loss, the total number of eye disorders now standing at 10,948. These are all adverse reactions to the AstraZeneca viral vector vaccine reported up to the 26th may 2021.</p>

<p>You’re probably wondering how on earth people could be going blind after taking a vaccine? Well one of the reasons is another extremely concerning adverse reaction that has been reported to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, one which has seen an astronomical increase in the number of reports in the past few weeks – stroke.</p>
<p>But what does this have to do with people going blind? Well this helpful <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://strokefoundation.org.au/What-we-do/For%20survivors%20and%20carers/stroke-resources-and-fact-sheets/Vision-loss-after-stroke-fact-sheet#:~:text=If%20the%20right%20side%20of,it%20can%20result%20in%20blindness." target="_blank">fact sheet</a> provided by the Stroke Foundation in Australia provides the answer as to why. According to the fact sheet around one-third of stroke survivors suffer visual loss, and most sadly never fully recover their vision.</p>
<p>The reason strokes cause blindness is that vision depends on a healthy eye to receive information and a healthy brain to process that information. The nerves in the eye travel from the eye through the brain to the occipital cortex at the back of the brain, allowing you to see</p>
<p>Most strokes affect one side of the brain. Nerves from each eye travel together in the brain, so both eyes are affected. If the right side of your brain is damaged, the left side vision in each eye may be affected. It is rare for both sides of the brain to be affected by stroke. When it does happen, it can result in blindness.</p>
<p>We can confirm that as of the 26th May 2021 there have been 225 cerebrovascular accidents resulting in 12 deaths, 26 cerebral haemorrhages resulting in 6 deaths, 27 ischaemic strokes resulting in 1 death, and 22 cerebral infarctions resulting in 1 death, all reported to the MHRA as adverse reactions to the Pfizer mRNA jab. But the list is much more extensive as you can see below…</p>

<p>But again, don’t get your hopes up about the AstraZeneca jab because the list is much worse. There have been 791 cerebrovascul accidents resulting in 33 deaths, 127 cerebral haemorrhages also resulting in 33 deaths, 44 intracranial haemorrhages resulting in 7 deaths, and 28 haemorrhagic strokes resulting in 4 deaths, all reported to the MHRA as adverse reactions to the AstraZeneca vaccine as of the 26th May 2021.</p>

<p>You didn’t think the list of strokes ended there did you? No, the list of strokes reported as adverse reactions to the AstraZeneca jab is so extensive that it takes up two pages of the MHRA report. There have also been 91 ischaemic strokes resulting in 3 deaths, and 81 subarachnoid haemorrhages resulting in 4 deaths, reported as adverse reactions to the AstraZeneca jab.</p>

<p>Are you also aware that people are going deaf after having the Pfizer jab? A total of 102 reports have been made to the MHRA of people suffering deafness as an adverse reactions to the Pfizer jab, as well as 19 reports of people suffering sudden hearing loss. The total number of ear disorders stands at 2,426.</p>

<p>But you won’t want to be giving your child the AstraZeneca jab if it is given emergency authorisation either as there have been 247 reports made to the MHRA of people suffering deafness as a result of having the AstraZeneca jab, as well as 44 reports of people suffering sudden hearing loss. The total number of ear disorders stands at 7,222.</p>

<p>You probably aren’t aware that the Pfizer jab has also caused hundreds of people to suffer seizures? Well we’re sorry to inform you that there have been 248 reports of people suffering a seizure, 6 reports of people suffering a psychogenic seizure, 9 reports of people suffering a partial seizure, and 12 reports of people suffering febrile convulsion (a condition usually only seen in young children in the unvaccinated population). All of these have been reported to the MHRA as adverse reactions to the Pfizer jab.</p>

<p>If you weren’t aware the Pfizer jab has caused seizures you’re also most likely not aware that it has also left people paralysed. There have been 54 reports of people suffering paralysis after having the Pfizer jab as of the 26th May 2021. But don’t forget only 1% – 10% of adverse reactions are actually reported.</p>

<p>Now we haven’t covered every single serious adverse reaction because if we did you probably wouldn’t finish reading the report before the next update was released. So finally we come to deaths.</p>
<p>‘People are dying due to the Covid vaccines?’, we hear you ask. The answer is an unfortunate, and unnecessary yes. There have been 1,253 deaths reported as adverse reactions to the Covid-19 vaccines. This includes 4 deaths for the Moderna jab which has barely got going in the UK yet, and 24 deaths where the brand of vaccine was unspecified.</p>
<p>As well as 396 deaths reported as adverse reactions to the Pfizer jab.</p>

What Facebook’s two-year Trump ban does and doesn’t do

<p>Donald Trump’s Facebook ban will last at least two years, the company <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2021/06/facebook-response-to-oversight-board-recommendations-trump/">announced on Friday</a>. Facebook said that <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22221285/trump-online-capitol-riot-far-right-parler-twitter-facebook">the former president’s actions on January 6</a>, which contributed to a violent mob storming Capitol Hill and staging an insurrection that led to five deaths, “constituted a severe violation of our rules,” and that it was enacting this policy change as part of a new approach to public figures during civil unrest.</p>
<p>Facebook added that the two-year sanction constitutes a time period “long enough” to be a significant deterrent to Trump and other world leaders who might make similar posts, as well as enough to allow for a “safe period of time after the acts of incitement.” However, Facebook still has not made a final decision about the future of Trump’s account. The company said that after two years, it will again evaluate whether there’s still a risk to public safety and potential civil unrest.</p>
<p>“We know that any penalty we apply — or choose not to apply — will be controversial. There are many people who believe it was not appropriate for a private company like Facebook to suspend an outgoing President from its platform, and many others who believe Mr. Trump should have immediately been banned for life,” Nick Clegg, the company’s vice president of global affairs, said in <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2021/06/facebook-response-to-oversight-board-recommendations-trump/">a blog post</a>, later adding: “The Oversight Board is not a replacement for regulation, and we continue to call for thoughtful regulation in this space.”</p>

<p>The announcement comes after Facebook’s oversight board, a group of policy experts and journalists the company has appointed to handle difficult content moderation questions, <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2021/5/5/22419029/trump-facebook-ban-suspension-oversight-board-decision">decided to uphold the platform’s freeze</a> on the former president’s account. In May, the board ruled that Facebook should not have banned Trump indefinitely and would have to make a final decision within six months. The board also said that Facebook would have to clarify its rules about world leaders and the risk of violence, among other recommendations.</p>
<p>“The Oversight Board is reviewing Facebook’s response to the Board’s decision in the case involving former US President Donald Trump and will offer further comment once this review is complete,” the board’s press team said in response to Facebook’s Friday announcement. Later in the day, the board said <a href="https://oversightboard.com/news/181834917194656-statement-on-facebook-s-response-to-the-oversight-board-s-decision-involving-former-us-president-donald-trump/">in a statement</a> it was “encouraged” by Facebook’s decision, and will monitor the company’s implementation.</p>
<p>Facebook now says it will fully implement 15 of the oversight board’s 19 recommendations. It also responded to the board’s demand that it provide more detail on its newsworthiness exception, a policy that Facebook has used — though rarely — to give politicians a free pass to post content that violates its rules. Now, Facebook says it will label posts that receive those exceptions, and will treat politicians’ posts more like those from regular users.</p>
<p>This set of decisions from Facebook has major implications not just for Trump’s account but also for national politics in the United States in the foreseeable future. At the same time, they signal that the company has remained steadfast in maintaining its power to decide what politicians can ultimately post to the platform. Facebook is providing more details about the rules it could use to punish politicians who violate its community guidelines, potentially increasing transparency. Still, it’s Facebook that has the final say over enforcement, including what’s considered newsworthy and remains on the platform versus what violates its community guidelines and gets removed.</p>
<p>In Friday’s announcement, Facebook said it would change one of its most controversial policies: an allowance for content that breaks its rules but is important enough to the public discourse to remain online, often because it has been posted by a politician. Some call this the “newsworthiness exception” or the “<a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22233450/trump-twitter-facebook-ban-world-leader-rules-exception">world leader exception</a>.” Now, Facebook is changing the rules so that the exemption seems more transparent and less unfair. But the company is still preserving its power to decide what happens the next time a politician posts something offensive or dangerous.</p>
<p>Trump was the inspiration for this exemption, which Facebook first created in 2015 after the former president (then a candidate) <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/06/28/facebook-zuckerberg-trump-hate/">posted</a> a video of himself saying Muslims should be banned from the United States. The newsworthiness exception was <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2016/10/input-from-community-and-partners-on-our-community-standards/">formally announced in 2016</a> and has long been controversial because it creates two types of users and posts: those who have to follow Facebook’s rules and those that don’t, and can post offensive and even dangerous content.</p>
<p>In 2019, the company <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2019/9/26/20885783/facebook-twitter-youtube-policies-political-content">added more detail</a>. Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president for global affairs and communication, said that Facebook would presume anything a politician posted to its platform would be of interest to the public, and should stay up — “even when it would otherwise breach our normal content rules” — and as long as the public interest outweighed the risk of harm.</p>
<p>The policy also presumably serves as a convenient shield for Facebook to avoid getting into fights with powerful people (like the president of the United States).</p>
<p>For all the controversy and confusion it has produced, Facebook says the newsworthiness exception is rarely deployed. In 2020, Facebook’s <a href="https://about.fb.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Civil-Rights-Audit-Final-Report.pdf">independent civil rights audit</a> reported that Facebook had only used the exception 15 times in the previous year, and only once in the US. Facebook amended its previous statement to the oversight board on Friday, saying it has only technically used the standard once in regard to Trump, over a video Trump posted of one of his 2019 rallies. Despite rarely being the beneficiary of the policy, the oversight board said back in May Trump’s account suspension meant Facebook should respond to the ongoing confusion.</p>
<p>Now, Facebook says politicians’ content will be analyzed for violations of its community guidelines — and weighed against the public interest — just like any other user. While that means the formalized global leader exception is gone, much of what actually remains up and off Facebook remains where it started: in Facebook’s hands.</p>
<p>In the aftermath of the deadly January 6 insurrection, many have pointed to the <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22221285/trump-online-capitol-riot-far-right-parler-twitter-facebook">role social media platforms,</a> including Facebook, played in exacerbating the violence. Critics of Facebook have said the insurrection showed how Facebook shouldn’t just reflect on its approach to Trump’s account, but also to the <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22335801/algorithms-artificial-intelligence-facebook-instagram-recommendations">algorithms, ranking systems, and design feature choices</a> that could have helped the rioters organize.</p>
<p>Even the Facebook oversight board, an independent body set up by Facebook to serve as a sort of court for litigation of the company’s most difficult content moderation decisions, recommended Facebook should take such a step. Earlier this week, allies of the Biden administration <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/06/02/building-back-together-facebook-election-fraud-491545">urged the company</a> to follow that guidance and conduct a public-facing review of how the platform might have contributed to the insurrection.</p>

<p>But Facebook isn’t doing that, and it seems to be deflecting that responsibility. The company is instead pointing to a separate research effort focused on Facebook, Instagram, and the 2020 US election, which Facebook says could include studying what happened at the Capitol.</p>
<p>“The responsibility for January 6, 2021, lies with the insurrectionists and those who encouraged them,” the company said in <a href="https://about.fb.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Facebook-Responses-to-Oversight-Board-Recommendations-in-Trump-Case.pdf">its Friday decision</a>, adding that independent researchers and politicians were best suited to researching the role of social media in the insurrection.</p>
<p>“We also believe that an objective review of these events, including contributing societal and political factors, should be led by elected officials,” wrote the company, adding that it would still work with law enforcement. Republicans, notably, have <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/25/22445422/january-6-commission-senate-filibuster">all but shut down</a> the possibility of a bipartisan January 6 commission.</p>
<p>Facebook is delaying, perhaps forever, a final decision on Trump himself. Right now, Facebook plans to suspend Trump for a minimum of two years, meaning he’d regain his account at the beginning of 2023. The ban does exclude Trump from using the platform to comment on the 2022 midterm elections, during which his posts could have boosted (or hurt) the hundreds of Republican candidates for the House.</p>
<p>Still, the two-year ban is not a final ruling as to whether Trump can return to Facebook. That means it’s still unclear if the former president will have access to the platform should he run for president again. It also leaves open the question of what it would really take for a politician to be permanently booted from the platform.</p>
<p>Many are frustrated that Facebook didn’t permanently ban Trump. It’s possible he could return to the platform in time to run for president in 2024, and Facebook obviously knows that. “If this gets 2 years, what can one possibly do to get a lifetime ban,” wrote one employee on an internal post, according to <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/janelytvynenko/facebook-will-ban-trump-for-two-years">BuzzFeed</a>. <a href="https://twitter.com/MuslimAdvocates/status/1400871039731744773">Civil</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/ColorOfChange/status/1400889805664395264">rights</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/jimsteyer/status/1400873822576812037">groups</a> reacting to the decision called Facebook’s ruling inadequate, and called Trump’s potential return to the social network a danger to democracy. Some think the decision yet again proves lawmakers need to step in and regulate social media.</p>
<p>Trump, for his part, seems extremely displeased with Facebook’s decision. “Facebook’s ruling is an insult to the record-setting 75M people, plus many others, who voted for us in the 2020 Rigged Presidential Election,” Trump said in a <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-facebook-ban-response-b1859970.html">statement released Friday</a>. “They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing and ultimately we will win. Our Country can’t take this abuse any more!”</p>
<p>It’s not clear what Trump returning to Facebook would even look like. Facebook has said the policy is in part meant to deter politicians from violating their rules again, but Facebook’s current suspension hasn’t stopped the former president from spreading election conspiracy theories on other platforms. Facebook implied Trump could possibly return when things are more stable, but it often appears that Trump himself is a primary source of instability.</p>
<p>It matters that Trump won’t be posting on Facebook until 2023, at the earliest, and that the company has some shiny new rules. But overall, Facebook is once again holding onto its power to decide what happens next.</p>

Why you can’t write for Bulletin, Facebook’s new Substack clone

<p>Substack made email newsletters buzzy — and <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22338802/substack-pro-newsletter-controversy-jude-doyle">controversial</a>. Then <a href="https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2021/making-twitter-a-better-home-for-writers.html">Twitter bought a Substack competitor and launched its own version</a>. Now it’s Facebook’s turn: The social network is prepping its take on subscription newsletters with something called Bulletin. It’s aiming for a launch at the end of June.</p>
<p>Like its competitors, Bulletin is a simple proposition: Find a writer you like who covers something you’re interested in, sign up and receive a regular stream of content in your inbox. Some version of it will be free, and there will also be a paid option at some point.</p>
<p>And the Facebook twist on the product is ... Facebook. Specifically, Facebook’s massive reach, with 2.85 billion users worldwide, and its ability to target and segment people who might be receptive to reading and paying for a newsletter that covers topics they’re interested in.</p>
<p>“They are pitching their ability to find communities at scale,” says a writer who has talked to Facebook about joining Bulletin. A Facebook rep declined to comment.</p>
<p>But while Facebook will use Facebook to market Bulletin, the product itself will live outside of Facebook. If you click on a Bulletin link while you’re on Facebook’s app, you’ll open up a new browser window where you can read the story or sign up for the newsletter.</p>
<p>People working on the project say that design is partially an attempt to distinguish Bulletin’s brand from Facebook — particularly at a time when readers and writers may distrust the company — and partially an effort to evade the 30 percent tax that Apple and Google levy on in-app subscription sign-ups and other transactions.</p>
<p>Bulletin is also, for now, an attempt to prove that people want to read stuff they don’t or can’t find on Facebook. At launch, at least, Bulletin will be limited to dozens of writers Facebook is recruiting and paying (<a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/8/30/12710318/facebook-media-company-advertising-chart">we stopped debating whether Facebook is a media company a long time ago</a>, but just in case you were wondering, hiring journalists to write news is something a media company does). And Facebook is deliberately trying to avoid political (read: divisive and popular) writers and subjects on Bulletin.</p>
<p>It’s a clear distinction between Substack, which is often associated with bomb-throwers like <a href="https://greenwald.substack.com/">Glenn Greenwald</a>, and Facebook itself, where conservative provocateurs like <a href="https://twitter.com/facebookstop10">Ben Shapiro, Dan Bongino, and Sean Hannity thrive</a>.</p>
<p>Instead, the first batch of Bulletin writers will include people covering topics like sports, fashion, and the environment, as well as a group of writers covering local news. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/journalismproject/apply-platform-independent-writers">Facebook has previously said it would steer at least $5 million</a> to “support local journalists interested in starting or continuing their work” on Bulletin.</p>
<p>Facebook knows that convincing writers to join a Facebook news project in 2021 isn’t a slam dunk — not after Facebook has built a track record for starting news initiatives, then moving on from them (see: <a href="https://www.cjr.org/tow_center/are-facebook-instant-articles-worth-it.php">Instant Articles</a>, <a href="https://www.vox.com/2017/1/17/14269406/facebook-live-video-deals-paid">Facebook Live</a>, etc.). So it is offering writers two-year deals — with an option for the writer to opt out after the first year — to convince them that it’s serious about this effort. Substack, by comparison, offers some writers a “<a href="https://blog.substack.com/p/why-we-pay-writers">Substack Pro</a>” advance that covers their first year on the platform.</p>
<p>I don’t know if Facebook is offering writers the chance to make money from subscription sales on top of the payouts it’s offering, but the company has previously suggested that it wouldn’t take a cut of subscription revenue writers generate. Substack takes 10 percent of its writers’ subscription fees, and Twitter’s Revue takes 5 percent. All three companies are telling writers they can take their list of email subscribers with them if they leave.</p>
<p>In any event, even if this project really does take off, it won’t be material for Facebook, which still makes almost all of its money from ads, and generated $9.5 billion in profit in the first 3 months of 2021 alone. But it is putting some resources — a lot for a normal company, not so much for one worth more than $900 billion — into the launch. One source familiar with the company tells me it paid more than $6 million to purchase the <a href="http://bulletin.com/">Bulletin.com</a> URL this year.</p>
<p>Bulletin does sync with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s new and public interest in supporting the “creator economy,” which he talked about when he unveiled <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2021/4/18/22390742/facebook-podcasts-clubhouse-audio-launch-spotify-zuckerberg-apple">Facebook’s plans to build out a suite of audio products</a>, including a podcast player and a Clubhouse clone. Facebook may eventually tie all of those together with Bulletin, so a writer could add members-only recordings or live events to their subscription offerings. How Congress wrecked its own science bill, explained in 600 words

<p>Earlier this year, it looked like Congress would do the unthinkable: pass a truly big, bipartisan bill. The legislation, known as the Endless Frontier Act, would provide a huge funding boost to American science research — framed as a way to compete with China. In the Senate, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) led the charge, and it looked like the bill would pass with support from both parties.</p>
<p>But in the past few months, two things happened: As the legislation worked through the Senate process, it <a href="https://www.niskanencenter.org/how-congress-ruined-the-endless-frontier-act/">was watered down</a>, reducing how much new funding would go to research. Then last week, a vote on the bill was delayed, as Republicans threatened to kill the legislation altogether.</p>
<p>To put it another way: A bill meant to show the US could own China instead proved how dysfunctional the American political system is.</p>
<p>The bill, renamed the US Innovation and Competition Act as it grew in scope, was originally meant to provide a $100 billion boost to research. That would go to burgeoning fields like artificial intelligence and quantum computing, ensuring the US stays ahead of China and other competitors.</p>
<p>The original bill wasn’t perfect. The $100 billion would go to a new technology directorate at the National Science Foundation — coming in at more than double NSF’s traditional funding. Some advocates worried that money would warp NSF’s culture, shifting focus from basic research to the applied sciences work of the new directorate.</p>
<p>Some also <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qdujrdy-slthittku-d/">criticized</a> the bill for not reforming how science funding works instead of merely increasing it.</p>
<p>Still, it was a promising start — a level of investment into science that advocates had wanted for years.</p>
<p>Then the Senate got its hands on the bill. Since the legislation seemed likely to be bipartisan, Schumer threw it into the traditional Senate process, letting it work through committees and get marked up by lawmakers.</p>
<p>The bill was dramatically changed in that process. A lot of loosely related pieces were added, like a bill to boost computer chip manufacturing in the US.</p>
<p>But most importantly, the $100 billion was effectively cut down: The Senate rolled NSF’s existing funding into the $100 billion, cutting the amount of actual new funding by about half, with a 30 percent boost for the agency. The new technology directorate was cut to $29 billion. And the remaining funds were shifted to Energy Department labs, pushed by senators with such labs in their states.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, only a small fraction of the new funding that is left over would go to research and development. The bulk would instead go to miscellaneous programs, such as scholarships and STEM education efforts.</p>
<p>All in all, the bill was cut down from a massive boost to research and development to only a small increase — still worth passing, some advocates say, but not the transformative legislation once promised.</p>
<p>“The big question is the opportunity cost,” Caleb Watney at the Progressive Policy Institute told me. “Congress likes to pass a big, flashy bill and cross it off the list and not think about the issue for another five years.”</p>
<p>To top it off, whether the bill passes at all is now an open question. Republicans have contested parts of the bill, particularly a provision to require a prevailing wage for chip manufacturers. Those disputes led the Senate to cancel a vote last week, promising to come back to it this month. But who knows if that’ll happen.</p>
<p>Remember the original intent of the bill: The Endless Frontier Act was meant to show the US could still get big things done — to stay ahead of the curve and beat China. Instead, Congress showed that the US maybe can’t do all that much anymore.</p>

<p>“I’m really excited to mentally check out and just go through the motions of touring. I’m supposed to be on a bus for the first time in forever, and I’m so excited to see what that’s like.”</p>
<p><em>Jubilee</em> dropped on June 4. Her third studio album and her first album in four years marks a moment of catharsis for Zauner on both a personal and pandemic level. The album was originally supposed to be released in 2020, but it was postponed again and again due to Covid-19 restrictions that interfered with her band’s touring plans. Now, <em>Jubilee</em> coincides with the onset of summer and widespread vaccinations in the US, freeing Zauner to finally perform live again. And perhaps more significantly, <em>Jubilee</em> is also the first Japanese Breakfast record that isn’t predominantly focused on the death of Zauner’s mother, who passed away in 2014. Aligning with the debut of <em>Crying in H Mart</em> — Zauner’s homage to her mother and the Korean food that binds them together — the album ushers in a new, brighter era for Japanese Breakfast.</p>
<p>“My artistic narrative has been so rooted in grief and loss that to write an album about joy feels like a real departure,” says Zauner. Later, she adds, “To finally let go of the album I’ve been sitting on for so long — it’s going to feel like such an overwhelming release.”</p>
<p>Zauner’s artistic career didn’t start with her mom’s death, although her music dedicated to grief quickly became what resonated with fans the most. She’s now 32, but before debuting as Japanese Breakfast five years ago, Zauner spent her early 20s waiting tables and trying to get her music hustle off the ground. She threw herself into writing and performing in Little Big League, a Philadelphia-based rock band she asserts was “underrated.”</p>
<p>“I still don’t understand sometimes why Japanese Breakfast has so much more popularity,” she says. “Some of my best lyrics are still from that project.” The early 2010s indie music scene, however, didn’t agree. Little Big League struggled to stay afloat, and the band was sidelined when Zauner learned her mother was sick and moved back home to Eugene, Oregon, to take care of her.</p>
<p>When she was 25, Zauner lost her mother to cancer, a few years after losing her aunt, also to cancer. After nearly a year as her mom’s caretaker, Zauner returned to the East Coast with her husband/bandmate to, as she describes in her memoir, “finally commit to the transition to normal adulthood.”</p>
<p>“I’d essentially spent the last year as an unpaid nurse and cleaner and the five years before that failing to make it as a musician,” Zauner writes, reflecting on the aftermath of her mom’s death. “I needed to commit myself to some kind of career as soon as possible.”</p>
<p>But just as she settled down in Brooklyn with a new job (marketing assistant), an album she recorded shortly after her mother died began to amass a following. Her first release under the moniker Japanese Breakfast, 2016’s <a href="https://michellezauner.bandcamp.com/album/psychopomp-2"><em>Psychopomp</em></a>, established Zauner, for better or worse, as an artist subsumed by grief.</p>
<p>Rife with echoey screams and lyrics like “home’s the rope that’s wrapped around your neck,” <em>Psychopomp</em> is an exploration of how grief can render life stagnant and brittle. <em>Psychopomp</em> is also what launched Zauner’s music career into a full-time occupation. Shortly after the album’s release, Zauner signed with indie label <a href="https://www.spin.com/2016/06/japanese-breakfast-jane-cum-video-dead-oceans-signing/">Dead Oceans</a>. She was asked to tour with Mitski and Porches. <a href="https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/21629-psychopomp/">Pitchfork</a> called <em>Psychopomp</em> “at once cosmically huge and acutely personal,” declaring “long may [Zauner] keep at this music thing.”</p>

<p>The problem with blowing up for an album you wrote about the recent death of your mom is that suddenly everyone wants to hear about the recent death of your mom. “It was definitely a challenge to spend the last five years unpacking trauma for everyone in every interview,” Zauner says.</p>
<p>“I go so back and forth [on how much to share] because I really love people who are so blunt and unapologetically themselves, and there’s a part of me that desires to be that fully. But then the consequences of that can be so overwhelming that I get frightened by them.”</p>
<p>Since the release of <em>Psychopomp</em>, Zauner’s career has moved at a nonstop pace. Over the past few years, she put out her 2017 sophomore album <a href="https://michellezauner.bandcamp.com/album/soft-sounds-from-another-planet"><em>Soft Sounds From Another Planet</em></a>, toured the world multiple times, <a href="https://imvdb.com/n/michelle-zauner">directed</a> music videos, and even hosted a YouTube <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7OqC0qtJYc">series</a> on the relationship between food and migration. <p>Just a few months prior to dropping <em>Jubilee</em>, Zauner published <em>Crying in H Mart</em>, a bracingly candid narrative of the life of her mother through the lens of her death. The book <a href="https://twitter.com/Jbrekkie/status/1387519332159299584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1387519332159299584%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fpitchfork.com%2Fnews%2Fjapanese-breakfasts-memoir-debuts-as-no-2-hardcover-nonfiction-best-seller%2F">debuted</a> at No. 2 on the New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction Best Sellers list and launched Zauner into a new <a href="https://slate.com/culture/2021/04/japanese-breakfast-memoir-crying-in-h-mart-interview.html">stratosphere</a> <a href="https://www.wmagazine.com/culture/japanese-breakfast-michelle-zauner-crying-in-h-mart-culture-diet-interview">of</a> <a href="https://pitchfork.com/features/profile/japanese-breakfast-interview-jubilee-crying-in-h-mart/">public</a> <a href="https://www.thecut.com/article/japanese-breakfast-michelle-zauner-profile.html">attention</a>.</p>
<p>Though Zauner says the writing process for her music and memoir “felt pretty separate,” it’s hard not to see <em>Crying in H Mart</em> as a companion piece to Japanese Breakfast. The book builds heavily on <em>Psychopomp</em> and <em>Soft Sounds</em>’ themes of loss, and it’s sprinkled with discreet callbacks to Zauner’s own songs. Twin references to “snowing” her mother with painkillers appear in both the memoir and <em>Jubilee</em>. A fleeting <em>Psychopomp</em> lyric about “death as a wedding ring” balloons into a book chapter about Zauner receiving her late mom’s ring as a gift from her dad. Expressions of grief as sung by Japanese Breakfast are abstract, but in <em>Crying in H Mart,</em> they’re devastating in their precision.</p>
<p>For someone who’s spent most of her adult life publicly documenting her grief, Zauner remains optimistic about the value of oversharing. “The majority of the time, sharing a very honest part of your life can touch people,” she says, explaining that her bigger challenge is learning to draw boundaries between her personal and public life.</p>

<p>All artists grapple with the competing demands of privacy and transparency, but for Zauner, this tension is compounded by being a woman of color in a <a href="https://annenberg.usc.edu/news/research-and-impact/annenberg-inclusion-initiatives-annual-report-popular-music-reveals-little">disproportionately white industry</a>. As a biracial Korean American, Zauner is one of the very few Asian indie artists to reach her level of acclaim and recognition. Whether she likes it or not, she’s become a lens through which people can imagine a new type of rockstar — and for many East Asian women, a new type of representation.</p>
<p>It’s a responsibility Zauner takes seriously, though it often feels more like a burden than an honor. When asked how it feels to constantly be questioned about her experience of making music while Asian, Zauner replies, “There are so many incredible nonwhite people making music. I would love to never have to answer that question again.”</p>
<p>Still, she acknowledges, “In some ways, I’ve done it to myself with this book, and it is a part of my life. There’s a part of me that understands why these conversations [about race] have to happen, and hopefully, we’ll get to a place where they don’t have to.”</p>
<p>Zauner’s tempered response sums up the classic catch-22 for artists of color: How do you talk about your lived experiences without talking about your heritage? How can you make art that won’t be labeled “race conscious” or “political” when race is a core part of your identity?</p>
<p>There’s a moment in <em>Crying in H Mart</em> where Zauner mentions how much Karen O, the half-Korean frontwoman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, impacted her decision to make music. She “was the first icon of the music world I worshipped who looked like me,” Zauner writes. “Karen O made music feel more accessible, made me believe it was possible that someone like me could one day make something that meant something to other people.” Now, while Zauner waits for her industry to catch up, she’s continuing the tradition of empowering people who “look like her” to be themselves.</p>

<p>Like <em>Crying in H Mart</em>, <em>Soft Sounds</em> and <em>Psychopomp</em> are meditations on memory: The way a once-happy moment splinters into a reminder of loss, the way old and mundane routines crystallize into glowy nostalgia.</p>
<p><em>Jubilee</em>, in contrast, surrenders itself to the momentum of the present. Across the album, Zauner employs fuller, lusher instrumentals, and there’s a groove to her singles “Be Sweet” and “Savage Good Boy” that swerves significantly from her older, more sparse music.</p>
<p>“In some ways, through purging everything I needed to for <em>Crying in H Mart,</em> I was able to begin this new chapter. I had written two albums about grief, and I still felt like there was so much left to say about that experience,” she says. “And I finally feel like I’ve said everything I need to say about loss and grief and my mom in this way. I felt ready to tackle a new scene.”</p>
<p>“Savage Good Boy” is perhaps the biggest creative leap from Japanese Breakfast’s earlier sound. It’s a giddy track that eschews grief altogether and instead explores what Zauner calls a “menacing reality of our times” — a billionaire with a doomsday bunker. “Savage Good Boy” is one of the first Japanese Breakfast songs that I can earnestly categorize as a bop, and it’s a delightful reminder that Zauner’s fiction is just as powerful as her more familiar confessional songwriting.</p>
<p>Even <em>Jubilee</em>’s somber tracks are imbued with traces of lightness. On “In Hell” — which recalls Zauner’s merciful attempts to dull her mother’s pain with opioids — floaty synth notes and horns dissolve the song’s crushing grief into something kinder. “There’s nothing left to fear,” Zauner cries out. “At least, there’s that.”</p>
<p>She likens her discography as an “archive,” and with her tour for <em>Jubilee</em> set to kick off this month, she muses that “songs take on different lives after you play them for a while. It’ll be really cathartic to get to play certain songs again.”</p>
<p>On previous Japanese Breakfast records, the passage of time was a source of pain and regret. But with <em>Jubilee</em>, transience becomes a gift. Music swells, crescendos, and then it ends — opening the door for something new.</p>
