Where could the next coronavirus jump to humans? New research offers clues.

For well over a year we’ve been living through the devastating consequences of a highly transmissible coronavirus. While the pandemic it caused is unprecedented by many measures, the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19 is just one of many SARS-related coronaviruses lurking among wildlife in some regions of the world, many of which could theoretically jump to human populations under the right conditions.
Figuring out what those conditions are is an urgent priority, and scientists have made a lot of progress on that front. They’ve learned, for example, that when forests get fragmented by deforestation or roads, it increases the likelihood of a virus “spilling over” from animal to human. What’s more of a mystery is where, exactly, those conditions come together to create the highest risk for the next coronavirus emergence.
A <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-021-00285-x">new analysis</a>, published Monday in the journal Nature Food, begins to answer that important question — specifically, by pinpointing where another coronavirus could jump to humans from horseshoe bats, which are known to carry SARS-related coronaviruses. By combining data on horseshoe bat habitats, land-use change, human population density, and other factors known to increase the risk of spillover, the researchers produced a map of “hot spots” in Asia and Europe where the risk is highest.

While the study doesn’t offer new insights about the origins of the novel coronavirus, which researchers suspect came from bats, it does point out where similar coronaviruses could emerge in the future. Alarmingly, the study finds that in many regions, especially southern China, these spillover risks are high. And it provides yet more evidence that preventing the next coronavirus pandemic will require reducing the root causes of a spillover, such as deforestation — not just responding to outbreaks after they happen.
Outbreaks of zoonotic diseases — that is, those stemming from animals — <a href="https://ipbes.net/sites/default/files/2020-10/IPBES%20Pandemics%20Workshop%20Report%20Executive%20Summary%20Final.pdf">are on the rise</a>. And, unfortunately, <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/3/31/21199917/coronavirus-covid-19-animals-pandemic-environment-climate-biodiversity">we’re largely to blame</a>. Among the key drivers of pandemics are deforestation and the destruction of wildlife habitat, according to a <a href="https://ipbes.net/sites/default/files/2020-10/IPBES%20Pandemics%20Workshop%20Report%20Executive%20Summary%20Final.pdf">report</a> by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). In fact, nearly a third of new diseases that emerged since 1960, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02341-1#ref-CR1">such as Ebola</a>, can be traced back to land-use change, the report indicates.
At its core, the problem with land-use change is that it creates more opportunities for humans to come into contact with wildlife. Fragmenting a forest, for example, increases the amount of forest edge — where forests meet human settlements — and drives wild animals into urban areas. “Tropical forest edges are a major launch-pad for novel human viruses,” a cadre of scientists <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/369/6502/379">wrote in Science</a> last summer.
<a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/369/6502/379">Research has shown</a> that humans and their farm animals are more likely to come into contact with wildlife when more than a quarter of the original forest is gone, and that fruit bats are more likely to forage close to humans when their habitat is impacted. What’s more, destroying habitats <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2562-8">may be making</a> wildlife that can host human pathogens — such as bats and rodents — more abundant.
Land-use change is just one factor that scientists say could help a virus jump from animals to humans. Dense human populations also pose a risk, as do intensive farming practices. Livestock, for example, can harbor a number of pathogens and have been implicated in several major outbreaks, such as H1N1 influenza and Nipah virus. The risk is even higher among modern farm operations, which tend to pack a large number of animals into small spaces, and often, those animals have weak immune systems.
While these risk factors are pretty clear, what’s less obvious is where they converge and what that means for us.
To date, most research into coronaviruses has focused on how they jump from one human to another, said Paolo D’Odorico, a study co-author and a professor of environmental science at the University of California Berkeley. While that serves an obvious benefit, it’s left a gap in our understanding of how these viruses move from wildlife to humans, which D’Odorico and his co-authors sought to help fill.
When the lockdowns began last year, they started gathering data on land-use change, livestock density, human density, and a handful of other drivers of spillover. Then they overlaid that data with the habitat of horseshoe bats in Asia and Europe. Horseshoe bats are known to host a large number of SARS-related coronaviruses, including one closely related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

With all that information, researchers produced the hot spot map, which highlights areas where those risk factors overlap with bat habitats. The dark red dots indicate areas where there’s a high risk of a coronavirus jumping to human populations, said David Hayman, another co-author and a professor of veterinary science at Massey University in New Zealand. The blue dots, by contrast, indicate where there are relatively few drivers of spillover.
The key takeaway, Hayman says, is that there are still large parts of southern China where there’s a high risk that a new coronavirus could emerge. “The conditions [for spillover] are still there,” Hayman said. “That means that there may well be new emergence events.”
Importantly, the scientists also mapped out regions that are not yet hot spots but could soon become ones if there’s an increase in forest fragmentation or other known drivers of spillover. They include an area south of Shanghai, China, in addition to Japan and the north Philippines.
“These are the places you need to be doing disease surveillance to watch for new emerging infections,” Hayman said.
Two researchers who were not affiliated with the study said the research is important and adds a new dimension to the conversation about coronavirus outbreaks. Some previous efforts to pinpoint the next emergence have relied on the location of past outbreaks, which isn’t that useful, said Andrew Dobson, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University. This research goes a step beyond that by focusing on what causes a spillover in the first place, Dobson said.
“This study very nicely paints a picture for where in the world there is an overlay of some of the most important factors that drive zoonotic viruses like SARS-CoV-2 to emerge,” said Jon Epstein, a vice president of science and outreach at EcoHealth Alliance, which is a nonprofit focused on wildlife and public health. (Epstein was not involved in the study; however, his colleague at EcoHealth Alliance, Peter Daszak, was involved in the World Health Organization’s effort to investigate the origins of the novel coronavirus earlier this year, which has sparked <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-who-china/scientists-call-for-new-probe-into-covid-19-origins-with-or-without-china-idUSKBN2BU2J2">controversy</a>.)
Just because a particular area has a higher risk of a spillover event doesn’t mean that one is likely to occur or that it will become a pandemic. Various measures, such as protocols to protect livestock from disease — which were not incorporated into the study — can lessen the risk.
When you’re living through the devastation of a pandemic, it’s hard to look toward the future, let alone prepare for another pandemic. But it’s critical that we do, scientists say. They estimate there are almost <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/359/6378/872.full">1.7 million</a> undiscovered viruses in mammals and birds, and half of them could be able to infect humans.
Covid-19 has been a wake-up call, Dobson said. “The most important thing is working out what we have to do to reduce the rate of these events occurring,” he said. And we already have a pretty good idea about where to begin: stemming deforestation and forest fragmentation.
People who live in hot spots, for example in southern China, “should put more pressure on politicians to address these mechanisms,” Dobson said. Policymakers can also use the analysis to figure out how to prevent certain regions from becoming hot spots in the future, said Cristina Rulli, the study’s lead author and a professor of hydrology at the Italian university Politecnico di Milano.
The cost of conserving forests and regulating wildlife trade would be far less than what we pay for pandemics, according to research by IPBES. Reducing deforestation also comes with all kinds of other benefits: Healthy forests absorb carbon dioxide, clean the air and water, and harbor biodiversity.
Meanwhile, the agriculture industry, which is growing rapidly, should take steps to prevent livestock from becoming infected, Epstein said. “As farms grow and intensify, they are vulnerable to outbreaks of wildlife viruses,” he said. “So, specifically, one thing we can focus on is biosecurity on farms.” That includes measures like ensuring that bats aren’t roosting around a farm.
We also have a lot more to learn, experts say, about the way spillover works and what’s happening on the ground in these regions.
“The biggest scientific problem of this century is understanding how natural ecosystems work,” Dobson said. We’ve known how to send a rocket into space for decades now, he said. But understanding how diseases spill over from wildlife to humans? Well, that is a “much harder set of mathematical problems.”

The unstoppable, villainous glamour of Cruella de Vil

Is there a children’s villain out there with more style or panache than Cruella de Vil? Her fabulous car, her cigarette holder, her long red gloves — as a child, I longed to have a rotary phone to dial with the cigarette holder, just like Cruella does in Disney’s 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. She is pure wicked glamour with skunk-streak hair.
In honor of Disney’s new <a href="https://www.vox.com/e/22215924">Cruella</a> movie, I went back to the books that started it all. Disney’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians is based on a 1956 children’s novel by Dodie Smith, whose most celebrated work, 1948’s cult favorite <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/10/20/16503280/i-capture-the-castle-dodie-smith">I Capture the Castle</a>, includes extended musing on clothes and furs and why both matter so much. Smith knew style was important — and she wrote Cruella’s style in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hundred_and_One_Dalmatians">The Hundred and One Dalmatians</a> with so much villainous glee, our dear Mrs. de Vil fairly takes over the whole book. She doesn’t have that many scenes, but those she does have are unforgettable.
Smith’s Cruella is, by the way, married. Her husband is a nonentity who barely speaks, which is perhaps why he doesn’t appear in any of the Disney adaptations. Such is Cruella’s commitment to her vibe that she made him take her name instead of the other way around. (Cruella Smith simply wouldn’t have had the same ring to it.)
Mr. de Vil “didn’t seem to be anything but a furrier,” Smith writes cattily, and Cruella married him for access to furs. Furs are essential to her lifestyle because she is always cold, and Smith strongly implies that nothing short of hellfire will ever be quite hot enough for her. (The Hundred and One Dalmatians is a very Anglican book, and I will warn you now that, similar to <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/21526708/the-witches-movie-2020-review-roald-dahl-antisemitism">many other English children’s books of its era</a>, the novel’s anti-Semitism is only barely coded.)
In her pursuit of warmth, Cruella travels everywhere in what Smith describes every time as “an absolutely simple white mink cloak,” and at one point appears wearing a brown mink coat underneath her existing cloak, along with a fur hat, fur gloves, and fur boots. Every night she sleeps between ermine sheets. Moreover, she flavors all her food — including ice cream — with nothing but pepper, and when the Dalmatians bite her, they discover that she too tastes of pepper.
Cruella’s style doesn’t extend only to ingenious ways to beat the cold, though. She drives a car painted in black and white stripes to match her hair. (Her hair was black and white even when she was a small child, we learn, and she wore it in one black plait and one white plait.) In her home, a green marble hall leads into a red marble drawing room (Christmasy!), and her dining room has black marble halls and a white marble table.
And then, of course, there are her clothes.
Here’s how Smith describes Cruella in her first appearance: “She was wearing a tight-fitting emerald satin dress, several ropes of rubies, and an absolutely simple white mink cloak, which reached to the high heels of her ruby-red shoes. … Her hair was parted severely down the middle and one half of it was black and the other white—rather unusual.”
Served with this utter look, our ostensible hero Mr. Dearly, whose dogs Cruella will shortly steal, peers down his nose and says, “Isn’t she a bit showy?” and truly, I don’t see how Smith could have expected anyone to root for him after that.
Regardless, by the end of The Hundred and One Dalmatians, the Dearlys and their dogs do defeat Cruella, leading her to flee England in disgrace. But Cruella makes a triumphant return in the sequel, 1967’s The Starlight Barking.
The Starlight Barking is not really about Cruella, who appears in only a single scene for a glorified cameo. (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starlight_Barking">What the book is actually about is bonkers</a>, by the way, and I don’t think I could spoil it if I tried.) Still, she makes every moment of it count.
The Cruella who returns in The Starlight Barking is now an entrepreneur in her own right. She runs a company called Cruella de Vil & Co.: Makers of Kloes that Klank, which the Dalmatians, who are also bad spellers, are able to decode as “Clothes that Clank.”
Cruella’s clothes now clank because, having abandoned fur after losing to the Dalmatians in the previous book, Cruella has since embraced tin. With characteristic commitment, she now sleeps on tin sheets. She is manufacturing and selling tin raincoats, which come “in bright colors, scarlet, emerald, sapphire, flame” and have sharp cutting edges. Perhaps relevant to Cruella’s interests after the Dalmatians ripped all her old furs into pieces, they are also unbreakable.
Cruella is a fashion visionary, and I am willing to accept that she knew something the rest of us didn’t. If the new Cruella movie becomes a hit and inspires a Cruella-centric take on The Starlight Barking, will 2021 mark the moment the rest of us finally start dressing in tin?

The best $130 I ever spent: A Major League Baseball TV pass

There are a million things worse than watching a movie on a Monday night. But at the end of this past March, I couldn’t think of any. Suddenly, I didn’t ever want to watch a movie, ever again.
This is not a great position to find yourself in if what you do for a living is write about movies. I could read a book, of course, or watch television, but during this awful year, those have been my choices every night: watch something on my TV or read a book. Rinse and repeat.
“I cannot,” I announced to my husband one night, after dinner, in a spasm of desperation — “I simply cannot watch anything else.”
I knew some of it was simply the weight of my world crashing down on my head. I’d been writing and teaching all year, trying to act like my work life was normal. I was sad and worried about friendships strained by distance. And like everyone, I felt uneasy about the unknown future.
But it took a while for me to realize what was really going on. What I really needed was baseball.
In early April, my Twitter feed was suddenly alight with friends celebrating yet another holiday we missed last year: Major League Baseball’s cheerful springtime opening day. The 2020 season had been truncated, axed to half-length by the same damn pandemic that cut everything short. This year it was back for the full season, April 1 to October 3, 30 teams, 162 games.
I meant to watch the shortened season last summer, but when it launched I realized it made me too sad to watch players in empty stadiums (<a href="https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/how-are-mlb-teams-handling-empty-stadiums-the-good-bad-and-weird-from-baseballs-fan-less-experience/">clever solutions notwithstanding</a>). Everything made me sad then. I didn’t need one more thing added to the pile.
But now they were back in full force, and I felt a familiar pull. I hadn’t watched baseball consistently since college. It takes commitment to follow the season, with games almost every day, each three or four hours long, time I normally don’t have. And as a cradle Red Sox fan who’s lived in Brooklyn for 15 years, it’s hard to go see my team at the stadium.
On April 5, though, as a kind of experiment, I flicked on an evening game. It was the Red Sox’s fourth game of the season, against the Tampa Bay Rays, at Fenway Park. They’d lost their previous three games, and thus had an inauspicious 0-3 record, but anything is possible. They were playing baseball. There were people scattered in the stands. And it was on TV.
The game started just after 7 pm, and to my delight, the Sox won easily, with a final score of 11-2. The next night I turned it on again and the game went to 12 innings. There were wild pitches and fielding errors, and when the Sox won it was — at least for us fans — like the end of a great movie, where you hope they’re going to win but you don’t know if they can pull it off.
I was elated. I was hooked. I needed this.
Within a couple of days, I’d decided what I had to do: I plunked down $130 on MLB.TV’s virtual table and asked, politely, if they could please give me all of the baseball.
And so they did. That sum gets me a stream of most out-of-market games (that is, games that aren’t being broadcast on my local stations) for every team in the league, except when they’re playing in my town — and it turns out one of the best things about being a fan of an out-of-town team is that I can see almost all the games.
Nearly every day, there’s something for me to watch — or semi-watch. Keeping an eye on baseball isn’t a full-concentration sort of deal, the way some sports are. (I love hockey, but it demands your eyeballs.) I can turn it on while I am grading, or writing, or doing chores. I know when to look up at the screen and when it’s safe to look away.
That’s part of why it feels so different to watch a baseball game than to watch a movie or read a book, both activities that should require my full attention. The bigger reason has to do with something else: storytelling.
There’s a narrative arc to a baseball season. Becoming a fan of a team means catching up, however cursorily, on that team’s story. The Red Sox, for instance, were one of the eight charter franchises in the American League. They’ve been playing in Fenway Park since 1912. In the early days, they won a whopping four world championships, but in 1918, they sold star slugger Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, and thus set off the “Curse of the Bambino,” an 86-year championship dry spell that was only broken when they finally won the World Series in 2004. (A victory that was even sweeter because they got to the series by beating their archrivals, the Yankees, in the American League championships.)
I remember that 2004 season vividly. It ended during my senior year in college, among the most stressful times in my life. In addition to commuting from my parents’ home half an hour away from campus, working two jobs, and taking a full load of senior-level computer science courses, I was also in the job hunt. I had to travel 100 miles south to New York City for second-round interviews several times during the semester. There was some mess in my personal life, too, and sadness about my friend group getting ready to move on. I felt a huge amount of anxiety about the unknown future.
Nearly every night, till I got in my car in the wee hours of the morning to go home and sleep a little, I sat at a table in the student union and worked on homework. I’d done that for four years. Keyed up and tired, I found my mind wandered away from my work and into the unknown.
But by some mercy, I found the solution: baseball. My boyfriend and I had gotten into watching games over the summer; his family would sometimes buy tickets to games at Fenway and then drive the three hours out and back in one night. It was fun in the stadium, a crowd of people enjoying themselves watching guys like Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon and Big Papi do their thing down on the field. Everyone was loudmouthed and boastful — it’s Boston, after all — but also visibly nervous about whether Babe Ruth’s ghost would show up and wreck what seemed like a beautiful team.
By the fall, it was harder (though not impossible) to both get to Boston and to get tickets. And this was 2004; my computer was not yet able to stream baseball games, and I had no way of watching them at school. (You could watch the game in the campus pub, but they were very strict about IDs, and I didn’t turn 21 till after the series.)
Still, I was in luck. MLB had released a software platform called GameDay that showed a little graphical representation of the field, and updated it as plays happened on the field. It was like watching a lo-fi cartoon of the game. If I parked myself at a table near the entrance to the campus pub, I could hear people shout together when someone homered or caught a fly ball. I felt connected to them, to the game, to the wins. The night the Sox beat the Yankees and captured the American League pennant, my heart was racing, but not, for once, because of my own anxieties. Just because of happiness.
Coming back to watching it this season feels like reinserting myself into a glorious story. I needed a reminder of where I’ve come from, and who I am, and how far I’ve gone.

A lightbulb went on at that April 6 game, the one that went 12 innings. It ended well past midnight; by the time it got into extras, I had set aside my other distractions and was pinned to the game. The Sox would be behind by one at the top of the inning, and then, in the bottom of the inning, with three outs and two strikes, a player would hit a home run or bat a runner in, tying the game and sending them into another inning. When they finally won, it was because at the absolute bottom of the 12th, when it looked like they’d probably lost, J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer and won the game.
“What a twist!” I found myself thinking. And then remembered that there are no writers’ rooms in baseball, no guarantees. This was real life. You couldn’t plan how it would go.
That’s so different from a movie, where someone has carefully written, shot, and edited a story with the goal of giving the viewer a particular experience. Or even a reality show, where the material of life is crafted and edited into a narrative. Nobody was guiding me through this experience, though, curiously, the rails on which it ran were even more evident than in most narrative art: innings, outs, strikes, balls, runs, singing “Sweet Caroline” in the seventh-inning stretch. But the final outcome was undetermined by me, the league, or anyone who might be watching. We were waiting to see what would unfold.
Right now, that’s where I’m living. Post-vaccination, there’s still plenty of uncertainty, but I have some small idea of what the structure of my year will look like. I know, in other words, the “rules.”
But I am still waiting on the outcome, wondering what twists are going to come and where the story will lead. I am living in several different waiting rooms simultaneously, having no idea, in some respects, what I’m even waiting for. I am still sad and nervous and worried.
Watching baseball, right now, I’m reminded of two things. This part of my life is part of a bigger story I’ve been living for a long time. And as much as I love narrative media and great stories, life is a lot more like an open-ended game where the end isn’t written yet. That’s frightening, but it’s also invigorating. A win is just as likely as a loss, and nobody loses forever.
Maybe one more thing, too. Any curse can be broken eventually. And when it is, there is celebration on the other side.

Founder of Black Lives Matter Chapter Quits, Says BLM Doesn’t Actually Care About Black People

Numerous people are pointing out the chilling irony of a video which shows a news reporter talking about “police reform” at George Floyd Square as a criminal gunman began firing shots.
The one year anniversary of Floyd’s death has provided Black Lives Matter activists and their slavishly sympathetic mainstream media echo chamber yet another opportunity to push divisive rhetoric and extremist policies.
One such news reporter was doing precisely that by beginning a monologue about “police reform” while live from George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, only to be interrupted by the sound of gunfire.
“We just gotta be careful here with some gunshots,” states the reporter as he ducks for cover while the shots continue to be heard.

Tokyo Olympics Set to Slap Ban on Cheering & Eating

More prominent scientific figures have thrown their weight behind calls for investigating the lab leak theory as the cause of the coronavirus pandemic, with some revealing they were previously ostracised for presenting research that suggested the scenario was realistic.
<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9628677/Call-inquiry-theory-Covid-emerged-Wuhan-lab.html">The Daily Mail reports</a> that British vaccine researcher and professor of oncology Angus Dalgleish struggled to find a publisher for his paper suggesting the virus’s spike protein contains artificially inserted sequences.
The report notes that the professor “said the research was shunned by the scientific community, who did not want to threaten China or be seen to be agreeing with President Donald Trump — who was a big advocate for the theory the virus was leaked from a lab at the time.”
Dalgleish noted in an interview with the <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/uk-scientist-feels-vindicated-as-focus-turns-to-wuhan-lab-h9x7jtvnj">Times of London</a> (paywall) that his research has led him to believe that “The changes [in the bat coronavirus] required to infect humans are extremely unlikely to have occurred naturally.”
“I was basically ostracised. I was fearful — really frightened by the way I was being treated. I was told I was not an expert on coronaviruses and I should just shut up,” the professor claimed.
He added that he and his research team “couldn’t believe people with whom we’d collaborated and published papers with in the past would shun us — I was warned I was out of my depth and I shouldn’t get into this and I’d make a fool of myself.”
In addition, yet more scientific figures have demanded that the lab leak theory be investigated, with professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge Ravi Gupta noting that the scenario has <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/05/27/call-un-inquiry-investigate-theory-covid-19-escaped-chinese/">not been ‘adequately explored’.</a>
Meanwhile Harvard epidemiologist Professor Marc Lipsitch asserted that the theory is not a ‘fringe position’, and “remains plausible enough that it should be looked into rigorously.”
Professor David Relman, a microbiologist at Stanford University, also stated said the theory needs to be further investigated.
Relman said that “Ideally, an investigation would rely on an international consortium of scientists under the auspices of many national academies of science working in partnership, in collaboration with an international governance entity, the UN Secretary General’s Office, or something of that sort.”
In addition, the State Department official who was leading an investigation into the origin of COVID-19 before it was <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/26/report-biden-admin-shut-down-investigation-into-wuhan-lab-leak-theory/">shut down by The Biden administration</a> has revealed that his team found “almost no evidence” to support the claim that the virus emerged naturally.
Appearing on Fox News, David Asher said “We were finding that despite the claims of our scientific community, including the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Fauci’s NIAID organization, there was almost no evidence that supported a natural, zoonotic evolution or source of COVID-19.”
Asher continued, “The data disproportionately stacked up as we investigated that it was coming out of a lab or some supernatural source.”
Referring to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Asher said “That was the epicenter of synthetic biology in the People’s Republic of China, and they were up to some very hairy stuff with synthetic biology and so-called gain-of-function techniques.”
“To say this came out of a zoonotic situation, it’s ridiculous,” Asher urged.

Stop this madness! – 920 women have reported the loss of their unborn baby after having the Covid Vaccine

In the United Kingdom the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JVCI) has advised that all pregnant women should be offered the Covid-19 vaccine. Meanwhile in the USA the CDC states that all pregnant women can receive a Covid-19 vaccine, if they wish to do so. But how exactly have these health authorities managed to conclude that the Covid vaccines are safe for use during pregnancy?
The <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-women-of-childbearing-age-currently-pregnant-planning-a-pregnancy-or-breastfeeding/covid-19-vaccination-a-guide-for-women-of-childbearing-age-pregnant-planning-a-pregnancy-or-breastfeeding">JVCI say</a> they came to the conclusion that pregnant women should be offered the Covid vaccines because “in the USA, around 90,000 pregnant women have been vaccinated mainly with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and no safety concerns have been identified“. But is this statement true?
The latest data within the <a href="https://wonder.cdc.gov/controller/datarequest/D8;jsessionid=20E4D2AF499A527425EDC523127D" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System</a> (VAERS) in the USA shows us that 395 women have reported the loss of their unborn child due to the Covid vaccines. Out of 90,000 this may not sound like many, but it’s important to remember that only 1% – 10% of adverse reactions are actually reported to the VAERS system, and there is a serious backlog due to the vast amount of adverse reactions that have been reported to the Covid vaccines. So the data presented within the VAERS system doesn’t include every report that has been submitted up to the 21st May, and reports made as far back as January are <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://twitter.com/AlexBerenson/status/1376281359795302400" target="_blank">only just being added into the system.</a>

How do we know only 1% of adverse reactions are reported? Because <a href="https://digital.ahrq.gov/sites/default/files/docs/publication/r18hs017045-lazarus-final-report-2011.pdf#:~:text=Adverse%20events%20from%20drugs%20and,and%20Drug%20Administration%20(FDA)." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a 2011 report</a> commissioned by the U.S Department of Health says so –
“Adverse events from drugs and vaccines are common, but under-reported. Although 25% of ambulatory patients experience an adverse drug event, less than 0.3% of all adverse drug events and 1-13% of serious events are reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Likewise, fewer than 1% of vaccine adverse events are reported.“
So that means the real number of women who have lost their unborn child, out of the alleged 90,000 to have had one of the Covid vaccines in the USA, could be anywhere between 3,950 up to 39,500.
That’s without taking into account the 11 (actually 110 – 1,100) reports of stillbirth and 40 (actually 400 – 4,000) reports of foetal death.

So to be quite blunt, when the JCVI say that “no safety concerns have been identified” in the USA they’re lying. Surely the JCVI should be advising all pregnant women are offered the vaccine because clinical trials say that it is safe to do so? After all authorities in the UK <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/coronavirus-vaccine/" target="_blank">keep reminding us</a> that the Covid vaccines have been “through all the clinical trials and safety checks all other licensed medicines go through“. Well to be quite blunt again, that it is another bare-faced lie.
None of the Covid vaccines are licensed, they have instead been given emergency use authorisation, which is only valid when there is a declared state of emergency, i.e lockdown restrictions. Why have they only been given emergency use authorisation? Because phase three clinical trials for all of the Covid jabs do not conclude until 2023. We provide a detailed fact check on the subject which you can read <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://dailyexpose.co.uk/2021/04/14/fact-check-full-fact-say-the-covid-vaccines-are-not-experimental-theyre-lying/" target="_blank">here</a>.
Which means there are no studies to confirm that the Covid vaccines are safe for use in pregnant women, as confirmed by the UK Government when the Pfizer mRNA jab was given emergency use authorisation in December 2020. This is precisely what the UK Government said in its advice at the time –
Pregnancy There are no or limited amount of data from the use of COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2. 
Animal reproductive toxicity studies have not been completed. COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine 
BNT162b2 is not recommended during pregnancy. 
For women of childbearing age, pregnancy should be excluded before vaccination. In addition, women 
of childbearing age should be advised to avoid pregnancy for at least 2 months after their second dose.

Breast-feeding It is unknown whether COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 is excreted in human milk. A risk to 
the newborns/infants cannot be excluded. COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 should not be used 
during breast-feeding. 
Fertility It is unknown whether COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 has an impact on fertility.’

This means that you are the trial / study if you choose to have an experimental Covid vaccine, and women in the USA are unwittingly taking part in the phase three trials by accepting an invite to participate by the CDC disguised as the ‘<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/pregnancy.html" target="_blank">V-Safe Pregnancy Registry</a>‘.
The CDC describe V-safe as a smartphone-based tool that uses text messaging and web surveys to provide personalised health check-ins after vaccination. They also state participation is voluntary, and participants may opt out at any time. Why do they add this caveat? Because they are legally obliged to when conducting an experiment. The pregnant women taking the vaccine in the USA are the experiment, and this is precisely why the JCVI in the UK were able to change its advice on offering the vaccine to pregnant women. Unfortunately this advice amounts to murder.
Because in the UK, as of<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> the seventeenth weekly update</a> on adverse reactions to the Covid vaccines reported to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, a total number of 79 women have reported the loss of their unborn / newborn child due to having the Pfizer mRNA vaccine as of the 20th May 2021. This includes 72 miscarriages, 1 premature baby death, 4 foetal deaths, and 2 stillbirths.
However again the MHRA estimates only 1% – 10% of adverse reactions are actually reported to the Yellow Card scheme. So the number of women who have actually lost their baby after having the Pfizer jab could actually be anywhere between 790 – 7,900.

Another 66 (actually 660 – 6,600) women have also reported the loss of their unborn / newborn child after having the AstraZeneca viral vector vaccine. This includes 63 miscarraiges, and 3 stillbirths.

The Moderna mRNA jab, which was only recently approved in the UK has also caused 2 (actually 20 – 200) women to lose their unborn / newborn child, however as the roll out of this experimental jab ramps up we can expect to see similar numbers to those reported to have occurred due to the Pfizer jab due to them both being a similar experimental gene therapy.

Women in EU countries are also reporting the loss of their unborn children due to the Covid vaccines. As of the 29th May the <a href="https://www.adrreports.eu/en/search_subst.html#" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eudravigilance system</a> shows that 188 women have reported the loss of their unborn child after having the Pfizer jab.

As you can see from the data we’ve just presented none of the Covid vaccines are proving to be safe for use in pregnant women. But the other lingering question to be answered is ‘why would an expectant mother wish to risk taking one of the experimental Covid vaccines’?
Here’s some of the things the authorities demand you avoid when pregnant – smoked fish, soft cheese, wet paint, coffee, herbal tea, vitamin supplements, processed junk foods… the list is endless. Yet women are coming forward to take one of the experimental jabs.
The answer most likely lies in the fact these women are not properly informed. If the authorities are telling them it is safe to have it then it must be true, right? Well they’re wrong, because authorities are in fact telling them the opposite. At least they are in writing anyway, whether these women are actually given this information is another story, we’re doubtful that they are.
The Royal College of Midwives actually label the risk of Covid vaccinations for pregnant women in an <a href="https://www.rcog.org.uk/globalassets/documents/guidelines/2021-01-12-covid-19-vaccine-info-sheet.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">information sheet</a> they created back in January. They state the following –
<ul>
<li>The Covid vaccines have not been tested in pregnant women.</li>
<li>Insufficient evidence is available for pregnant women.</li>
<li>We do not know whether the vaccine works as well in pregnancy 
(Daily Expose comment – they do not know because they are experimental)</li>

If these women are being made aware of the above risks then this is on them just as much is it on the JCVI for changing its advice. What these women need to realise is that they are the guinea pigs, and by taking the Covid vaccine they are taking part in an experiment, an extremely dangerous and outrageous one at that.
