Ottawa:
The remains of 215 children have been discovered on the grounds of a former boarding school set up more than a century ago to assimilate Canada's indigenous people, according to a local tribe.
A specialist used ground-penetrating radar to confirm the remains of the students who attended the school near Kamloops, British Columbia, the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc tribe said in a statement late Thursday.
"Some were as young as three years old," said chief Rosanne Casimir, calling it "an unthinkable loss that was spoken about but never documented" by school administrators.
Its preliminary findings are expected to be released in a report next month, she said.
In the meantime, the tribe is working with the coroner and museums to try to shed further light on the horrific discovery and find any records of these deaths.
It is also reaching out to the students' home communities across British Columbia and beyond.
"My heart breaks for the families and communities impacted by this tragic news," Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett said in a tweet, offering government support for their "healing as we honour loved ones lost."
The Kamloops Indian Residential School was the largest of 139 boarding schools set up in the late 19th century, with up to 500 students registered and attending at any one time.
It was operated by the Catholic church on behalf of the Canadian government from 1890 to 1969.
Some 150,000 Indian, Inuit and Metis youngsters in total were forcibly enrolled in these schools, where students were physically and sexually abused by headmasters and teachers who stripped them of their culture and language.
Today those experiences are blamed for a high incidence of poverty, alcoholism and domestic violence, as well as high suicide rates, in their communities.
A truth and reconciliation commission identified the names of, or information about, at least 3,200 children who died from abuse or neglect while attending a residential school. The exact number remains unknown.
At the Kamloops school, the principal in 1910 had raised concerns that federal funding was insufficient to properly feed the students, according to the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc statement.
Ottawa formally apologized in 2008 for what the commission later termed a "cultural genocide" as part of a Can$1.9 billion (US$1.6 billion) settlement with former students.

Geneva, Switzerland:
The World Health Organization warned Friday that efforts to uncover the Covid-19 pandemic's origins were being hampered by politics, insisting scientists needed space to work on solving the mystery.
"We would ask that we separate the science from the politics, and let us get on with finding the answers that we need in a proper, positive atmosphere," WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan told reporters.
"This whole process is being poisoned by politics," he warned.
The UN health agency has been facing intensifying pressure for a new, more in-depth investigation of where Covid-19 came from, but so far there is no timeline for the next stage in the probe.
US President Joe Biden this week ordered the US intelligence community to investigate whether the Covid-19 virus first emerged in China from an animal source or from a laboratory accident.
The move hints at growing impatience with waiting for a conclusive WHO investigation into how the pandemic that has killed more than 3.5 million people worldwide began.
During an ongoing meeting of WHO member states, European Union countries and a range of others also pressed for clarity on the next steps in the organisation's efforts to solve the mystery, seen as vital to averting future pandemics.
"No timeline"
But the UN health agency said earlier Friday it was still waiting for recommendations from a team of WHO technical experts on how to move forward.
"The technical team will prepare a proposal for the next studies that will need to be carried out and will present that to the director-general," spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told reporters.
"He will then work with member states about the next steps," she said, acknowledging "there is no timeline".
The WHO finally managed to send a team of independent, international experts to Wuhan in January, more than a year after Covid-19 first surfaced there in late 2019, to help probe the pandemic origins.
But in their long-delayed report published in late March, the international team and their Chinese counterparts drew no firm conclusions, instead ranking a number of hypotheses according to how likely they believed they were.
- 'Impossible position' -
The report said the virus jumping from bats to humans via an intermediate animal was the most probable scenario, while a theory involving the virus leaking from a laboratory was "extremely unlikely".
But the investigation and report have faced criticism for lacking transparency and access, and for not evaluating the lab-leak theory more deeply -- a mere 440 words of the report were dedicated to discussing and dismissing it.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has also continued to insist that all theories remain on the table and further investigation is needed.
Long dismissed as a right-wing conspiracy theory, and vehemently rejected by Beijing, the idea that Covid-19 emerged from a lab leak in Wuhan in China has been gaining increasing momentum in the United States.
While not suggesting that a lab leak was necessarily the source, a number of prominent international scientists have said a deeper, more scientific look at the theory was needed.
"Every country and every entity is free to pursue their own particular theories of origin... It's a free world," Ryan said.
But he complained that the discourse around the origins search, and around WHO's role in it, was making it difficult to focus on the science.
"Putting WHO in a position like it has been put in is very unfair to the science we're trying to carry out," he said.
"It puts us, as an organisation, frankly in an impossible position to deliver the answers that the world wants."

Washington:
US Senate Republicans on Friday blocked creation of an independent commission to investigate the deadly riot by Donald Trump supporters at the Capitol in Washington, a move aimed at preventing a bipartisan probe ahead of 2022 midterm elections.
Ten Republicans would have needed to join all 50 Democrats to advance the measure, which had already cleared the House of Representatives with modest bipartisan support.
But only six Republicans voted in favour, a result that demonstrated the deep divide in Congress and the nation nearly five months after the violent January 6 assault -- and the influence that the former president continues to exert on the Republican Party.
Republican Senators Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins were among those who bucked their leadership to vote in favour of moving to a final vote on the commission, which had the support of President Joe Biden and several former Republican lawmakers.
But powerful Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell argued that the panel would have been a purely partisan exercise that would add nothing to the Department of Justice and congressional investigations already underway.
Republicans argue that more than 400 people have been arrested for their part in the unrest, and that those court cases will help shed sufficient light on what happened.
In the House of Representatives, 35 of the chamber's 211 Republicans joined Democrats in support of the commission that was to be modelled after the panel convened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks of 2001 and which had strong bipartisan support.
Defenders argued the latest commission would have included five members chosen by the Democrats and five by the Republicans, with subpoena power resting with both sides.

President Joe Biden proposed a $6 trillion budget on Friday to fund his ambitious makeover of the economy in 2022 while driving the United States into record debt -- if he can get it past Congress.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson acted "unwisely" over funding arrangements for a lavish makeover of his Downing Street flat, but was not guilty of any impropriety, his ethics advisor concluded Friday.
The finding by Christopher Geidt, the UK government's newly appointed adviser on ministerial standards, does not entirely lift the cloud over the "wallpapergate" affair with several other probes still under way.
It is also likely to fuel questions about why civil servants, at Johnson's direction, were busy working on creating a White House-style trust to manage the Downing Street complex in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic last year.
Publishing an annual report on ministerial interests, Geidt found that Johnson "knew nothing" about how the designer makeover of his private quarters was funded, noting the works had begun as he was critically ill with Covid-19 in early April 2020.
The prime minister should have shown more curiosity later but believed that the putative charitable trust would take care of the invoices, Geidt said.
Officials failed to brief Johnson that the proposed trust was proving hard to get off the ground, he said, and the invoices were in fact settled by the Conservative Party and a wealthy party donor.
"Given the level of the prime minister's expectations for the trust to deliver on the objects he had set, this was a significant failing," the advisor's report said.
"Instead, the prime minister -- unwisely, in my view -- allowed the refurbishment of the apartment at No 11 Downing Street to proceed without more rigorous regard for how this would be funded." 
'No conflict of interest'
Johnson only became aware of the issue in February this year, Geidt said, after press reports raised questions about funding for the redecoration -- which reportedly stretched to 200,000 pounds ($284,000), far above an annual government allowance.
He settled the bill himself in March, and Geidt said he was "content that no conflict -- or reasonably perceived conflict -- arises as a result of these interests".
A Downing Street spokesperson said the adviser's report showed Johnson had adhered to the UK ministerial code "at all times" and stressed that no taxpayer money was used in the redecoration, above the allowance of 30,000 pounds.
Breaches of the code are normally considered a matter for resignation -- Geidt's predecessor quit when Johnson refused to fire Home Secretary Priti Patel over a finding that she had bullied her officials.
Geidt meanwhile was grilled by opposition MPs two weeks ago on whether he is truly independent of Johnson.
The advisor is firmly an establishment figure: a former army officer and diplomat, he was private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II for 10 years to 2017, and sits in the House of Lords.
Several parliamentary probes remain under way over the flat revamp. Most seriously for Johnson, Britain's Electoral Commission last month launched its own investigation.
The commission, which regulates political finance and can refer investigations to the police, said it had found "reasonable grounds to suspect that an offence or offences may have occurred".

More Scientists Demand Lab Leak Investigation; Claim They Were Ostracised For Presenting Research Backing The Scenario

More prominent scientific figures have thrown their weight behind calls for investigating the lab leak theory as the cause of the coronavirus pandemic, with some revealing they were previously ostracised for presenting research that suggested the scenario was realistic.
<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9628677/Call-inquiry-theory-Covid-emerged-Wuhan-lab.html">The Daily Mail reports</a> that British vaccine researcher and professor of oncology Angus Dalgleish struggled to find a publisher for his paper suggesting the virus’s spike protein contains artificially inserted sequences.
The report notes that the professor “said the research was shunned by the scientific community, who did not want to threaten China or be seen to be agreeing with President Donald Trump — who was a big advocate for the theory the virus was leaked from a lab at the time.”
Dalgleish noted in an interview with the <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/uk-scientist-feels-vindicated-as-focus-turns-to-wuhan-lab-h9x7jtvnj">Times of London</a> (paywall) that his research has led him to believe that “The changes [in the bat coronavirus] required to infect humans are extremely unlikely to have occurred naturally.”
“I was basically ostracised. I was fearful — really frightened by the way I was being treated. I was told I was not an expert on coronaviruses and I should just shut up,” the professor claimed.
He added that he and his research team “couldn’t believe people with whom we’d collaborated and published papers with in the past would shun us — I was warned I was out of my depth and I shouldn’t get into this and I’d make a fool of myself.”
In addition, yet more scientific figures have demanded that the lab leak theory be investigated, with professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge Ravi Gupta noting that the scenario has <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/05/27/call-un-inquiry-investigate-theory-covid-19-escaped-chinese/">not been ‘adequately explored’.</a>
Meanwhile Harvard epidemiologist Professor Marc Lipsitch asserted that the theory is not a ‘fringe position’, and “remains plausible enough that it should be looked into rigorously.”
Professor David Relman, a microbiologist at Stanford University, also stated said the theory needs to be further investigated.
Relman said that “Ideally, an investigation would rely on an international consortium of scientists under the auspices of many national academies of science working in partnership, in collaboration with an international governance entity, the UN Secretary General’s Office, or something of that sort.”
In addition, the State Department official who was leading an investigation into the origin of COVID-19 before it was <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/26/report-biden-admin-shut-down-investigation-into-wuhan-lab-leak-theory/">shut down by The Biden administration</a> has revealed that his team found “almost no evidence” to support the claim that the virus emerged naturally.
Appearing on Fox News, David Asher said “We were finding that despite the claims of our scientific community, including the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Fauci’s NIAID organization, there was almost no evidence that supported a natural, zoonotic evolution or source of COVID-19.”
Asher continued, “The data disproportionately stacked up as we investigated that it was coming out of a lab or some supernatural source.”
Referring to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Asher said “That was the epicenter of synthetic biology in the People’s Republic of China, and they were up to some very hairy stuff with synthetic biology and so-called gain-of-function techniques.”
“To say this came out of a zoonotic situation, it’s ridiculous,” Asher urged.
