Colombo:
There could be slight acid rains due to the emission of nitrogen dioxide from the Singapore-flagged cargo ship which caught fire near the Colombo beach last week, Sri Lanka's top environment body has warned, asking people to be vigilant in case of inclement weather.
The cargo vessel - MV 'X-PRESS PEARL' - was carrying a consignment of chemicals and raw materials for cosmetics from Hazira in Gujarat to Colombo Port. It caught fire 9.5 nautical miles from the coast in Colombo, where it was anchored outside the Port of Colombo on May 20.
Apart from the 325 metric tonnes of fuel in its tanks, MV X-Press Pearl was loaded with 1,486 containers carrying about 25 tonnes of hazardous nitric acid.
"We observed that the emission of Nitrogen Dioxide from the MV X-PRESS PEARL was massive. With the emission of Nitrogen Dioxide gas in the rainy season, there could be slight acid rains," Dharshani Lahandapura, Chairperson of Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), was quoted as saying by news website newsfirst.lk on Friday.
Especially, the people in the close proximity to the coastal belt, should remain vigilant and ensure that you do not expose yourself to rain these days, the official said.
MEPA said that the blaze has been brought under control to a great extent and the authority is taking all appropriate measures to conduct beach clean-up procedures as soon as possible to avert the risks of pollution caused due to the fire in the cargo ship.
The density of the flames is reducing. Two tug boats are still engaged in firefighting missions and boundary calls. Vessels from the Indian Coast Guard and tug boats from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Sri Lanka Navy are monitoring the situation, Lahandapura was quoted as saying in the report.
Lahandapura said they are closely monitoring the situation and there is no sign of any oil spill.
India on Tuesday dispatched ICG Vaibhav, ICG Dornier and Tug Water Lilly to help the Sri Lankan Navy extinguish the fire on the container ship.
India's specialised pollution response vessel Samudra Prahari will reach on Saturday to augment pollution control efforts, the Colombo Gazette reported on Friday.
Updating the joint fire fighting efforts, the Indian High Commission here said that at present, heavy smoke has been observed only near the accommodation/superstructure area in the aft portion of the ship and is being tackled, the report said.
Overall, the MV X-Press Pearl is currently assessed as being stable and not having issues with watertight integrity.
External fire-fighting using foam and boundary cooling by sea-water along the entire length of vessel from either side is under progress and continuous monitoring of vessel's draught, list conditions and presence of hazardous and noxious substances overboard is being undertaken.
"Quantity of combustible material onboard is estimated to be limited. The ICG ships will continue to assess the situation and the decision to board or approach closer to the vessel will be taken after fully dousing the fire and undertaking sufficient boundary cooling, the Indian mission said.
The High Commission said that containers that fell from the vessel were identified and threat assessment for navigation safety have already been carried out and shared with the relevant Sri Lankan authorities, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne on Friday said there is no threat of the vessel breaking into two and the ship is now largely stable.
All 25 crew members of the ship - of Indian, Chinese, Filipino and Russian nationality - were rescued on Tuesday after a 'fire alarm' dispatch was sent.

History was created on this day 68 years ago when Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand climbed Mount Everest, 29,029 feet above sea level. 
They were part of a British expedition. Mr Norgay and Mr Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11:30 AM on May 29,1953,  but the world came to know of their achievement only on June 2, the day of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.
And to commemorate their achievement, Nepal decided to celebrate International Everest Day every year on May 29. 
The day was observed for the first time in 2008, the year Edmund Hillary died.
On this day, a series of memorial events and processions take place in Nepal's capital Kathmandu and the Everest region. International Everest Day is also a crucial annual event for Nepal's mountain tourism. 
Among the participants in the events are ministers, climbers, tourism entrepreneurs, and government officials. This year, with the fear of novel coronavirus looming large, the celebrations are expected to be low-key.
Mount Everest attracts climbers, including highly experienced mountaineers, every year from across the globe. The British named it Mount Everest after Sir George Everest, a 19th-century British surveyor of South Asia.
Routes:
There are two main routes mountaineers take to climb the Chomo-Lungma, or "Mother Goddess of the Land," as the Tibetans call it. 
One approaches the summit from the southeast in Nepal, known as the standard route. The other one is from the north in Tibet. On the standard route, it may not pose many climbing challenges but altitude sickness, weather, wind, as well as significant hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall can make a mountaineer's life a living hell.
The First Attempt
The year was 1921 and it was none other than a British expedition that attempted scaling Mount Everest the first time. 
They trekked almost 645 kilometres across the Tibetan Plateau before a strong storm forced them to abort the trek. However, those who were part of the expedition - among them British explorer and mountaineer, George Leigh Mallory, who was a leading member of early expeditions to Mount Everest -saw what looked like a feasible route up the peak. 
Mr. Mallory, when asked by a journalist why he wanted to scale Mount Everest, said: "Because it's there."
The 1953 success of the ninth British expedition came after a near-miraculous achievement of a Swiss expedition a year earlier. Raymond Lambert and Mr Norgay, the two climbers, reached 28,210 feet, just below the south Summit, but had to abort their ascent after they fell short of supplies.

The United States on Friday announced punitive measures against Belarus targeting the regime of strongman President Alexander Lukashenko, who met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin amid a global outcry over the forced diversion of a European plane.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki called for "a credible international investigation into the events of May 23," which she called "a direct affront to international norms."
Belarus scrambled a military jet to divert a Ryanair plane and arrested 26-year-old opposition journalist and activist Roman Protasevich who was onboard, triggering a global outcry.
The White House announced it was working with the European Union on a list of targeted sanctions against key members of Lukashenko's regime.
Meanwhile, economic sanctions against nine Belarusian state-owned enterprises, reimposed by Washington in April following a crackdown on pro-democracy protests, will come into effect on June 3.
Further US moves on Belarus could target "those that support corruption, the abuse of human rights, and attacks on democracy," Psaki said.
The White House also issued a "Do Not Travel" warning for Belarus to US citizens, and warned American passenger planes to "exercise extreme caution" if considering flying over Belarusian airspace.
The European Union has also urged EU-based carriers to avoid Belarusian airspace.
However President Vladimir Putin celebrated Russia's close ties with Belarus on Friday as he hosted Lukashenko in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
With observers closely watching the talks to see how far the Kremlin would go to support the regime, the Russian leader said he was "very glad" to see Lukashenko and agreed with him the Western reaction was an "outburst of emotion".
'Rock the boat'
Lukashenko complained the West was seeking to stir unrest in Belarus.
"An attempt is underway to rock the boat to reach the level of last August," he said, referring to anti-regime protests following a disputed election.
"It's clear what these Western friends want from us."
The Belarus strongman, who arrived with a briefcase, said he wanted to show Putin "some documents" related to the Ryanair incident and thanked him for his support in the latest standoff with the West.
The talks lasted for more than five hours but their results were not announced.
Over the past years Lukashenko has had a volatile relationship with Moscow, playing it off against the West and ruling out outright unification with Russia.
But after the Ryanair plane incident his options appear to be limited.
Putin and the Belarus leader have met regularly since August, when historic protests broke out against Lukashenko's nearly three-decade rule.
The 66-year-old waged a ruthless crackdown on his opponents and has leaned increasingly on the Russian president amid condemnation from the West.
Several people died during the unrest in Belarus, thousands were detained, and hundreds reported torture in prison.
Sunday's plane diversion was a dramatic escalation, with EU leaders accusing Minsk of essentially hijacking a European flight to arrest Protasevich.
Technical reasons
The overflight ban has led to several cancellations of air journeys between Russia and Europe, after Russian authorities rejected plans that would have skipped Belarusian airspace.
Russia insists the cancellations are purely "technical," but they have raised concerns that Moscow could be systematically refusing to let European airlines land if they avoid Belarus.
The Kremlin criticized the flight ban as politically motivated and dangerous, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calling it "completely irresponsible".
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the bloc was monitoring whether this was a broader policy from Russia, but Moscow insisted the disruptions were in no way political.
Belarus authorities claimed to have received a bomb threat against the Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius carrying the dissident.
Minsk said it demanded the flight land in the Belarus capital based on the message it said was sent from a ProtonMail address by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
Protasevich, who helped organize the demonstrations against Lukashenko's rule last year, was arrested along with Russian girlfriend Sofia Sapega, 23, after the plane landed in the city.
'Braver'
Borrell has said proposals are "on the table" to target key sectors of the Belarusian economy including its oil products and potash sectors.
Belarus opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Friday urged the EU to be "braver" and impose more sanctions against the Minsk regime.
After meeting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in The Hague, Tikhanovskaya said measures being discussed by EU countries did not go far enough.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Friday warned Lukashenko that "it is time to change course." 
"No amount of repression, brutality or coercion will bring any legitimacy to your authoritarian regime," she said.
The European Commission president also wrote to the opposition offering a three-billion-euro package to support "a democratic Belarus" if Lukashenko steps down.

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro visited two indigenous reservations in the Amazon on Thursday for the first time as head of state, despite protests from some tribal leaders against his drive to open up their protected lands to commercial mining.
Bolsonaro, flanked by army officers and wearing a feather head-dress, watched members of the local Tukano community perform a ritual dance at the Balaio reservation, where he inaugurated a bridge.
Regional indigenous leaders from the upper reaches of the Rio Negro river said they were not invited to see Bolsonaro and that he only met with unrepresentative chiefs in a photo opportunity for his re-election campaign next year.
"Our institution is three decades old but we were not included in the president's agenda or any dialogue on public polices for the region," the Federation of Rio Negro Indigenous Organizations said in a statement. "He met with self-proclaimed leaders to produce fake news."
The president's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The wooden bridge that Bolsonaro inaugurated was built by the Brazilian army on a road that runs to the border with Venezuela, passing through the Balaio reservation, where major reserves of niobium have been found.
The metal is used to make light-weight steel for jet engines and other special applications. Bolsonaro has regularly mentioned its value in speeches about the untapped riches of the Amazon that Brazil must exploit.
The Balaio reservation is above the Rio Negro at the north-western tip of Brazil bordering Colombia and Venezuela.
Bolsonaro later visited and stayed overnight at a military frontier post in Maturacá, which is located at the western end of the Yanomami reservation, the largest in Brazil.
The reservation's eastern section in the state of Roraima has been invaded by more than 20,000 illegal gold miners, who have been emboldened by Bolsonaro's support for the legalization of wildcat mining in Brazil.
Yanomami leaders deplored the far-right president's visit to their reservation and repeated their calls for authorities to expel the miners.
"The government must urgently remove the invaders from our territories to safeguard our health and that of Mother Earth," they said in a letter to Bolsonaro.
"We do not accept the legalization of mining activities on our lands, because it will not bring the Yanomami any benefit," the letter signed by leaders from Maturacá said.
Bolsonaro's visit came the day after gold miners illegally prospecting on indigenous lands along the Tapajos river in the Amazon shot at a Munduruku village and burned down the house of one of its leaders.
The lower house of Brazil's Congress, where Bolsonaro supporters have a majority, is currently considering legislation proposed by the government that would open the door to commercial mining and agriculture on indigenous reservations.

California will launch a new probe into the high-profile case of a death row inmate convicted of the murder of four people who have maintained for decades that he was framed by police, Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday.
Kevin Cooper was found guilty of the 1983 slayings in a suburb outside Los Angeles and was hours away from execution in 2004 when public figures from Reverend Jesse Jackson to Denzel Washington lobbied then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for clemency.
Schwarzenegger denied those calls but Cooper's execution was called off at the last minute by an appeals court.
Subsequent governors have ordered new DNA testing of evidence using the latest technologies.
On Friday, Newsom ordered a "full review" of Cooper's trial and subsequent appeals, as well as the original case and evidence including the recently conducted DNA tests, in order to decide on the convict's clemency petition.
Cooper had escaped from prison shortly before Douglas and Peggy Ryen, both 41, their 10-year-old daughter Jessica and her 11-year-old friend Christopher Hughes were found stabbed and slashed to death at the Ryens' home in Chino Hills, California.
Multiple witnesses reported seeing three white men in bloodied clothes driving a car stolen from the Ryens' home on the night of the murders.
A woman who believed her boyfriend was involved came forward to police, having found blood on his clothes and a hatchet similar to the one used at the scene missing from his tool rack.
But police arrested Cooper, who is Black, and he was found guilty by a jury in 1985.
Cooper, now 63, and his defense team allege that police planted evidence linking him to the scene and destroyed or tampered with evidence pointing to other suspects as the case grew in infamy and pressure for a conviction increased.
While Cooper's execution was blocked, judges refused him the right to appeal, leading to five judges writing in a dissent that: "The State of California may be about to execute an innocent man."
Vice President Kamala Harris, during her time as California's attorney general, has been drawn into the case, accused by her critics of blocking new DNA testing. 
In his executive order Friday, Newsom wrote that "questions about the evidence introduced at trial against Mr. Cooper have come to light" and that he has reviewed the latest DNA test results.
Under the order -- which does not take a position on Cooper's guilt or innocence -- a law firm will be employed to assist California's parole board is investigating the case and presenting its review.
The last execution in California occurred in 2006, and Newsom has already pledged no executions will take place while he is governor.

The images show the result of a collaboration between Kellogg Company and LGBT lobby group Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), with $3 from every purchase going to the organization.

Kelloggs added that the marketing ploy was part of their “commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion” while GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said the partnership “will create opportunities for homes and families to have conversations about the importance of acceptance, compassion and understanding, especially when it comes to LGBTQ+ youth.”
Some responded to the news by joking that now even cereals were turning the frogs gay.

Skittles is also “giving up” its rainbow colors for pride month, turning the candy gray and donating money to GLAAD. Apparently, the LGBT movement now owns the rainbow itself. As we document in the video below, the LGBT movement has become so intertwined with giant corporations exploiting it for lame, meaningless virtue signaling and free product placement that the two are inseparable.
Given that it is supported by every major company, cultural institution, media outlet, social media network and government entity in the west, one wonders how they can still claim to be “oppressed” and what exactly they are fighting against now that they’re pushing against an open door.
GLAAD was “founded as a protest against defamatory coverage of LGBT people” in 1985.
In 2021, people who engage in such “defamatory coverage” or merely refuse to bake a gay pride cake are publicly shamed, deplatformed, attacked, fired, sued in court, or a combination of all five.
Who is really doing the oppressing and who is being oppressed at this point?
