Three Indian peacekeepers, who laid down their lives while serving in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions last year, are among 129 military, police and civilian personnel honoured on Thursday with a prestigious UN medal awarded posthumously for courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
Corporal Yuvraj Singh, who served with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and two civilian peacekeepers -- Ivan Michael Picardo, who served with UNMISS, and Mulchand Yadav, who worked for the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) -- were honoured posthumously with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal during a sombre virtual ceremony on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
India is the fifth largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping with more than 5,500 military and police serving in peace operations in Abyei, Cyprus, Congo, Lebanon, the Middle East, Somalia, South Sudan and the Western Sahara, according to the UN.
"On the occasion of the UN International Day of peacekeepers, I salute the men and women who serve in UN peacekeeping missions in foreign lands to preserve international peace and security," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, TS Tirumurti, said.
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29 to pay tribute to the uniformed and civilian personnel for their invaluable contribution to the work of the world organisation and to honour the more than 4,000 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948.
Earlier in the day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres laid a wreath to pay tribute to the fallen UN peacekeepers and presided over the virtual ceremony at which the Dag Hammarskjold Medal was awarded posthumously to the peacekeepers who lost their life serving under the UN flag last year and in the first month of this year.
The theme for this year's observance is "The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security."
Tens of thousands of young peacekeepers aged between 18 and 29 years deployed around the world play a key role in helping UN missions implement their mandated activities, with the active participation of young people from host communities, the UN said.
"The challenges and threats faced by our peacekeepers are immense. They work hard every day to protect some of the world's most vulnerable, while facing the dual threats of violence and a global pandemic," Mr Guterres said during the virtual ceremony.
The UN chief said despite COVID-19, across all UN missions, peacekeepers have not only been adapting to continue to deliver their core tasks, they are also assisting national and community efforts to fight the virus.
"I am proud of the work they have done," he said, adding that the fallen UN peacekeepers - uniformed and civilian - lost their lives due to malicious acts, in accidents and as a result of illness, including COVID-19.
The fallen peacekeepers came from 44 different countries and diverse backgrounds but were united by a common purpose: "to serve our great Organisation, promote peace and security and improve the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable people. We are forever in their debt," Mr Guterres said.
The Secretary-General also awarded the '2020 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award' to Major Steplyne Buyaki Nyaboga, a Kenyan military officer who served with the African Union - United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, (UNAMID).
Created in 2016, the Award "recognises the dedication and effort of an individual peacekeeper in promoting the principles of UN Security Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security."
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, saluted the dedication and bravery of UN peacekeepers, who serve and perform admirably in challenging environments only compounded by the ongoing pandemic.
"I also honour our young peacekeepers who bring energy and innovation, and serve as role models to youth populations working tirelessly to ensure meaningful representation and participation in political processes," he said.
Mr Lacroix said UN peacekeepers deserve "our full support" and "we must continue to work together to do all we can to improve their safety and security and give them the tools to succeed."
The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was established by the General Assembly in 2002, to pay tribute to all men and women serving in peacekeeping, and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
The General Assembly designated May 29 as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers in commemoration of the day in 1948 when the UN's first peacekeeping mission, the UN Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), began operations in Palestine.
Since then, more than one million women and men have served in 72 UN peacekeeping operations, directly impacting millions of people, and saving countless lives. Today, UN Peacekeeping deploys more than 89,000 military, police and civilian personnel in 12 operations.

Beijing:
China's military today criticised the Biden administration for continuing the Trump era "Indo-Pacific strategy", saying the US should not form "cliques" or provoke "new Cold War" featuring bloc confrontation.
No strategy should instigate countries to establish selective and exclusive military alliances, to gang up or to create the "new Cold War" featuring bloc confrontation, and the zero-sum game will only lead to more division, antagonism and chaos, Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defence, said at an online press conference.
He made the remarks while responding to a question that US President Joe Biden has continued to promote the "Indo-Pacific strategy" formulated by his predecessor Donald Trump to deter China and made frequent military provocations against Beijing.
His comments come a week after a US Navy guided-missile destroyer sailed through the Taiwan Strait on May 19, challenging China's claims over the area as Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its mainland.
The Chinese navy, which rushed its ships to pursue the American warship, accused the US of resorting to provocative moves.
The US Navy's 7th Fleet said in a statement, "The ship's transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific."
Senior Colonel Tan did not directly refer to the Quadrilateral alliance or Quad comprising the US, India, Australia and Japan while accusing Washington of forming cliques. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has in recent weeks stepped up attacks on the four-nation alliance, terming it as an exclusive clique portraying China as a challenge and sowing discord between Beijing and regional countries.
Senior Colonel Tan, while claiming that China always holds that no strategy should go against the historical trend of peace and development, or deliberately hype up conflict and confrontation, said that intensifying military presence and highlighting military competition will only aggravate regional tensions and endanger world peace and stability.
"No strategy should harm the welfare of people in regional countries, or put them in a dangerous situation. Seeking one's own selfish interests and unilateral absolute security will only do harm to others and lose their support," he was quoted as saying by the Chinese military online.
Referring to the reported comments by a US defence department official that the US government intends to put in place more defence hotlines with China to manage security risks and prevent potential conflicts, the Chinese defence ministry spokesperson said that for a long time, the Chinese and American militaries have always maintained communication through multiple channels, including the direct line between the two defence ministries.
"We believe that its purpose is to enhance trust, reduce misgivings, manage crises, and prevent conflicts. The US side should not, on the one hand, claim to put up new defence hotlines, while on the other hand keep ramping up military deployments in the Asian Pacific region, frequently conduct close-in reconnaissance on China, and even deliberately initiate dangerous circumstances where aircraft and vessels nearly collide," he said.
He said that China advises the US side to keep their words and match their deeds accordingly, display sincerity, work with the Chinese side toward the same goal, and push forward the healthy and stable development of mil-to-mil relations by intensifying dialogue and communication and properly managing divergences.
China and the US are currently at loggerheads over a host of issues as the Biden administration continued the tough policy to contain China initiated by Trump, targeting Beijing on Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Biden beefed-up the US-China policy by uniting US allies like the UK, the EU and Japan. He also hosted the first quadrilateral summit of the emerging alliance called Quad in March which included the US, Australia, Japan and India.

Rand Paul: ‘Fauci Cannot Investigate Himself; Get Him Under Oath’

Senator Rand Paul, who has spearheaded the renewed push to investigate the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, has called for Dr Fauci to be placed under oath and made to testify about the murky <a href="https://archives.infowars.com/global-bombshell-china-admits-to-developing-testing-covid-19-in-wuhan-level-4-lab/">‘gain of function’ research</a> he was involved with funding at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Paul also urged that Fauci “needs to be excluded from the <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/27/biden-orders-us-intel-to-analyse-information-on-possible-wuhan-lab-leak/">investigation</a>” because he is too deeply involved in the whole thing.
Appearing on Fox News, Paul spoke about the funding that Fauci and the NIH supplied to China.
“Well, sure it’s a lot. And there are some reports that it added up to millions over time. But the other thing he said was that there was no gain of function in the application. There are scientists who looked at the application and who absolutely and categorically disagree with him,” Paul noted.
“The other evidence that we have is Dr. Shi from the Wuhan lab published a paper that is clearly about gain of function and it that she thanks her group and Dr. Fauci for funding that paper. So there are a lot of contradictions going on,” Paul added.
“I think Dr. Fauci should be made to testify under oath about the money that was given to the lab,” Paul said, adding “The good news is yesterday I passed an amendment on the Senate floor that says no more gain of function money can be sent to China.”
“The bottom line, he cannot investigate himself. If he was responsible for giving this money. He has every incentive to cover it up and not reveal the truth about it because if the pandemic did come from the lab, he would have great culpability in this,” Paul further emphasised.
The Senator, who continues to <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/25/rand-paul-responds-to-vile-death-threat-package-of-white-powder-sent-to-his-home/">receive death threats</a> after being so vocal against Fauci, added that “he can’t be investigating this, nor can any of his people that he picks be investigating this. He needs to be excluded from the investigation.”
“This is very important because this could happen again,” Paul warned, adding “I mean, they are experimenting with the SARS virus, which is 15 times more deadly than COVID-19. COVID-19 kills 1%… more than 3 million people. If SARS got out of the lab, that could be 50 million people. This is a very important task ahead of us. We have 11 labs in our country that do this kind of research.”

In a separate appearance on the Christian Broadcasting Network on Tuesday, Paul <a href="https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/health/2021/may/fauci-should-go-rand-paul-raises-questions-about-u-s-link-to-wuhan-lab">called for Fauci to be fired</a>, asserting “The nicest way to say this, I think he’s obfuscating the truth.”
After denying for months there was even any gain of function research going on at the Wuhan lab or that it was being funded by the US, Fauci completely reversed his position, admitting that there was ‘modest’ funding of the research, leading Paul to accuse Fauci of ‘perjury’.

China Blasts Lab Leak Hypothesis as a “Conspiracy Theory”

China has predictably blasted the COVID lab leak hypothesis as a “conspiracy theory,” with state media outlets demanding an investigation into U.S. bio-labs around the world.
The response came after the Biden administration was <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/27/biden-orders-us-intel-to-analyse-information-on-possible-wuhan-lab-leak/">forced to task</a> the U.S. intelligence community into investigating the issue having previously put a halt to a similar investigation started under Trump.
“Lately, some people have played the old trick of political hype on the origin tracing of [Covid-19] in the world,” said a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in DC. “Smear campaign and blame shifting are making a comeback, and the conspiracy theory of ‘lab leak’ is resurfacing,” he added.
The spokesman also said that focusing on the Wuhan Institute of Virology would make it “hard to find the origin of the virus” and would “seriously hamper international cooperation on the pandemic.”
The editor in chief of the Global Times, a Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece, responded to the issue by demanding an investigation into U.S. bio-weapons facilities such as Fort Detrick.

Despite complaining about the “politicization” of discovering the origin of the virus, China previously suggested that the U.S. had deliberately released the virus during the October 2019 Wuhan military games, a claim that was never retracted.
A <a href="https://summit.news/2021/03/31/video-who-advisor-says-investigation-into-covid-origin-was-entirely-inadequate/">previous investigation</a> of the Wuhan lab carried out by the World Health Organization was so limited in its scope that representatives visited for just three hours, asked researchers a limited number of questions, left and then announced the investigation absolved China of blame.

Facebook Reverses Ban on Claims COVID Was “Man-Made” Months After Asserting it was “Debunked”

Facebook has announced that it is reversing a policy that banned posts which claimed COVID-19 was “man-made” just months after asserting that the theory had been “debunked.”
As recently as February, “following consultations with leading health organizations, including the World Health Organization,” Facebook said it would delete “false claims” that virus was “man-made or manufactured.”
Just three months later and the company has been forced to do a 180.
“In light of ongoing investigations into the origin of [Covid-19] and in consultation with public health experts, we will no longer remove the claim that [Covid-19] is man-made from our apps,” said Facebook in a statement.

However, both Twitter and YouTube refused to comment when asked by Politico if they would also reverse their policies.
Facebook’s reversal comes after numerous prominent health officials were forced to admit that the lab leak theory is a possibility.
The Biden administration, having previously put a stop to an investigation into the Wuhan Institute of Virology started under Trump, has also been <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/27/biden-orders-us-intel-to-analyse-information-on-possible-wuhan-lab-leak/">forced to task</a> the US intelligence community with studying the hypothesis.
This once again highlights how social media giants and ‘fact checkers’ shouldn’t have the power to decide what information is blacklisted from circulation.
If it is subsequently confirmed that COVID-19 was indeed man-made and was leaked from the Wuhan lab, social media networks, in alliance with the mainstream media, will have been complicit in facilitating one of the biggest cover-ups in modern history.

In a separate appearance on the Christian Broadcasting Network on Tuesday, Paul <a href="https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/health/2021/may/fauci-should-go-rand-paul-raises-questions-about-u-s-link-to-wuhan-lab">called for Fauci to be fired</a>, asserting “The nicest way to say this, I think he’s obfuscating the truth.”
After denying for months there was even any gain of function research going on at the Wuhan lab or that it was being funded by the US, Fauci completely reversed his position, admitting that there was ‘modest’ funding of the research, leading Paul to accuse Fauci of ‘perjury’.

The results of the US-backed gain of function research at Wuhan was published in 2017 under the heading, “<a href="https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1006698">Discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses provides new insights into the origin of SARS coronavirus</a>.”
Fauci has come under <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/tucker-carlson-calls-for-investigation-into-fauci-wuhan-lab-connection/">increased scrutiny</a> as the NIH’s involvement with the $3.7 million grant to the Wuhan Institute is further being <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fauci-niaid-wuhan-lab-funding-ron-johnson-coronavirus">called into question.</a>
