An 81-year-old man who became the second person in the UK to receive a COVID-19 vaccine has died of an unrelated illness. William Shakespeare, who goes by Bill, died of a stroke. Mr Shakespeare was a patient at University Hospitals Coventry's frailty ward when he received his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech jab in early December.
Then, he had gained international attention not just because of his age but also because he shared his name with the world's greatest playwright and poet of the 16th century.
Mr Shakespeare was administered the COVID-19 vaccine on December 8, shortly after 91-year-old Margaret Keenan, the first person in the country to get the shot. Mr Shakespeare's friend and Coventry councillor Jayne Innes told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-57234741">BBC</a> he had died on Thursday and added the “best tribute to Bill is to have the jab”.
Mr Shakespeare had been a parish councillor for 30 years and chaired the council for 20 of those. “He was such a lovely man, one who had a real commitment to making his local area better,” Ms Jayne told <a href="https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/tributes-coventry-man-bill-shakespeare-20671590">Coventry Live</a>, a local news outlet.
In a tribute, his wife, Joy, said Mr Shakespeare felt very grateful and hugely proud of being offered the opportunity to become one of the first people in the world to be given the vaccine. Mr Shakespeare loved seeing the media coverage about him in December and would often talk about it to people to encourage them “to get their vaccine whenever he could," she added. Apart from his wife, Mr Shakespeare is survived by two adult sons and grandchildren.
The West Midlands Labour group said on Twitter that Mr Shakespeare's decades of service to the party were recently recognised. “Our thoughts are with Joy and Bill's family and friends."

Top US and Chinese trade officials have held their first "candid" talks since Joe Biden became president, the two sides said Thursday, as Washington scrutinises whether Beijing is sticking to a key agreement forged during a bruising tariffs battle between the economic superpowers.
Trade relations between the two will be a major plank in the new US leader's foreign and economic policy as he looks to maintain the pressure on China imposed by predecessor Donald Trump, while looking to tread a more diplomatic line.
The countries signed a so-called "phase one" pact in January last year, in which Beijing pledged to increase its purchases of American products and services by at least $200 billion through 2020 and 2021.
The deal came at the end of long-running negotiations during a trade war that saw each hit the other with punitive tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods and damaged relations.
But top US trade negotiator Katherine Tai has said she is analysing whether the terms of the pact have been met by China, with some experts saying Beijing is falling up to 40 percent short on its agreement.
On Thursday, China's commerce ministry said Vice Premier Liu He and Tai held "candid, pragmatic" talks and "constructive exchanges in an attitude of equality and mutual respect".
Under the agreement, the pair are meant to check in every six months on the progress of the agreement.
It commits China to buying tens of billions of dollars' worth of American agricultural goods -- from pork and beef to blueberries and avocados -- energy and services in exchange for slashing Trump's tariffs on $120 billion of imports from China.
The deal also knits China into guarantees to protect intellectual property -- addressing a major US gripe that patents, trademarks and copyright are routinely flouted by Chinese businesses -- while also ensuring American banks and insurers have wider access to China's financial markets.
However, it did not deal with a 25 percent levy on a further $250 billion of Chinese goods remains, which is potential target of a long-trailed "phase two" deal.
A short statement from the Office of the US Trade Representative confirmed the "introductory virtual meeting" between Tai and He.
"During their candid exchange," Tai laid out the "guiding principles of the Biden-Harris Administration's worker-centred trade policy... while also raising issues of concern," the statement added.
The White House has not rowed back on Trump's tough trade position, insisting it will keep tariffs in place for now as it looks to reboot the US economy after the pandemic crisis.
On its side, China has maintained duties on some imports from the United States.
Early on, Trump's trade war bit hard into many sectors of Chinese manufacturing -- raising prices of everything from imported shoes to packaging.
But China's tit-for-tat response also ripped into US jobs and businesses.
While most global economies continue to find their way out of the virus-induced crisis, China is well on the recovery road -- having managed to largely contain the disease -- with exports soaring thanks to worldwide demand for medical masks and protective gear.

President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, a trusted political ally, as America's next ambassador to India, according to media reports.
Biden is expected to announce the names of political ambassadors, including for India, as soon as next week, according to a report in Axios.
President Biden, a Democrat, is also expected to announce Nicholas Burns as the ambassador to China and Rahm Emanuel and Tom Nides as ambassadors to Japan and Israel respectively, the report in the American news website said on Wednesday.
Garcetti, 50, who served as the co-chair of Biden's presidential campaign, was initially considered for the Cabinet.
Garcetti is the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the United States, after New York City.
The important position of US envoy to India has been lying vacant since January 20.
In the absence of a full-time ambassador, Daniel Smith, the director of the Foreign Service Institute, who recently served as acting Secretary of State and Acting Deputy Secretary of State, has been sent to New Delhi to serve as Charge d'Affaires, ad interim.
However, the White House declined to comment on the nomination of Burns or Garcetti, saying "no one is final until they''re announced," an AP news report said.
According to the Axios report, the White House is still finishing the vetting process for potential ambassadors, including Garcetti, following which, Biden is expected to formally send more than a dozen names to the Senate to begin the confirmation process for his first batch of political ambassadors, which also include appointments for France, Italy and Canada.
The president began reviewing names of potential ambassadors in March, and officials are putting a premium on diversity in assembling the first batch that he''ll send to the Senate, the report said.

The risk of further eruptions from volcano Nyiragongo led DR Congo authorities to order the evacuation of parts of the city of Goma Thursday, causing an immediate exodus of tens of thousands of people, an AFP correspondent said.
"Current data on seismicity and the deformation of the ground indicate the presence of magma under the urban area of Goma, with an extension under Lake Kivu," the local military governor General Constant Ndima said in a broadcasted public address.
"Right now we can't rule out an eruption on land or under the lake, which could happen very soon and without warning," he added. "The situation can change rapidly, and is being constantly monitored."
Evacuation is necessary and should be done calmly and without rushing, he continued, saying that authorities had arranged transport towards Sake, around 20 kilometres west of Goma, in each of the ten districts of the city affected.
"People should take the bare minimum with them, to make sure everyone has a chance to get on," he added.
The announcement was followed by the immediate departure of tens of thousands of people towards the southwest, in the direction of the Rwandan border.

Australia's ambassador to China was on Thursday barred from the trial of an academic held on spying charges, in a case that has exacerbated a bitter row between the two nations.
The trial of Australian Yang Jun, detained for more than two years on accusations of espionage, was set to be held behind closed doors in Beijing with a heavy security presence outside the courthouse on Thursday morning.
Chinese-born Yang, 56, who also goes by the pen name of Yang Hengjun, is one of two high-profile Australians detained in China on charges of spying.
Australia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne on Thursday voiced deep concerns about China's handling of the case, as a letter from Yang was released maintaining his innocence and referencing torture while being detained.
"We have not seen any explanation or evidence for the charges that have been brought against him," Payne told ABC radio, adding she had hoped the trial would be "transparent" with consular officials granted access.
But Australian ambassador Graham Fletcher was turned away from the courtroom when he arrived on Thursday.
"This is deeply regrettable, concerning and unsatisfying," Fletcher told media outside the courtroom afterwards.
"We've long had concerns about this case, including a lack of transparency, and therefore conclude it to be an instance of arbitrary detention."
Fletcher left the courthouse shortly afterwards. It was not immediately clear if Yang's lawyer was with him, nor if the trial had started.
A convoy of police cars and vans was later seen arriving at the court, but it was not clear whether Yang was inside. Authorities gave media no information about the case.
- 'Suffering and torture' -
Yang was detained on a rare return to China in January 2019.
Beijing has outlined almost no details of the case against him since he was taken into custody.
In October the foreign ministry confirmed that charges of "espionage" had been filed against Yang and the case has been accepted by the court, without giving more information.
In a letter to supporters shared with AFP and other media, Yang said that his health had deteriorated after 26 months "without fresh air or sunshine".
But he also said that he remained "spiritually strong" and vowed to "face suffering and torture with resilience".
"I have no fear now," he said in the message, believed to have been dictated through a consular visitor or lawyer.
"I love you all and I know that I am loved."
Yang said in the message to his supporters that "if the worst comes to the worst, if someone wants to take revenge on me for my writings, please explain to the people inside China what I did, and the significance of my writing to people in China".
China's judicial system convicts most people who stand trial, and espionage charges can carry a sentence of life in prison.
Beijing has insisted Yang's rights are being respected and accused Australia of interfering in a Chinese legal case.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have deteriorated sharply in recent years, with China furious over Australia banning Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from building the nation's 5G network. Australia cited national security concerns for its decision.
China has also been angered over Australia's push for an independent probe into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as criticism from Canberra over democracy and human rights issues in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
China has in return imposed tariffs on Australian export worth billions of dollars, as well as cut off diplomatic channels between the two nations.
Both nations have accused each other of harassing citizens as a way of leverage in their disputes.
Another Australian, TV anchor Cheng Lei has been held since August last year on accusations of "supplying state secrets overseas".
And two Australian journalists were rushed out of China shortly after, fearing being detained on spying charges.
Beijing has accused Canberra of raiding the homes of Chinese state media journalists as Australia investigates an alleged campaign of covert influence.

Sweden Goes From Being One of the Safest Countries in Europe to the Second Most Dangerous

A new investigation finds that Sweden has gone from being one of the safest European countries 20 years ago in terms of gun crime to the second most dangerous.
The study, published by the country’s National Council on Crime Prevention (Brå), reveals that Sweden is the only country on the continent where shootings have increased substantially since the start of the century.
“Most of the fatal shootings in Sweden (around 80 percent) had a link to organised crime, according to the study, a proportion which had risen from 30 to 50 percent in the early 2000s and less than 20 percent in the 1990s. Brå also compared the proportion to other countries: around 60 percent of fatal shootings were linked to organised crime in the Netherlands, while in Finland such events were extremely rare,” reports <a href="https://www.thelocal.se/20210526/sweden-is-the-only-european-country-where-fatal-shootings-are-on-the-rise/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter">The Local</a>.
After having been ranked 18th out of 22 countries for gun crime from 2000 to 2003, Sweden now ranks in second place, behind only Croatia.
Authorities appear to be baffled at the cause of the increase, blaming it on “illegal drugs trade, conflicts within organised crime networks, and low levels of trust in the police.”
“The increased gun violence in Sweden is unique in comparison with most other countries in Europe, and there are no clear explanations for that,” said Håkan Jarborg, a police chief in southern Sweden.
In a country where criticizing mass immigration is basically a thought crime, no consideration is even afforded to the possibility that the large number of Muslim migrants the country has absorbed over the last two decades could be a factor.

“Here we go; this is what I’ve handled from Monday-Friday this week: rape, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, rape-assault and rape, extortion, blackmail, assault, violence against police, threats to police, drug crime, drugs, crime, felony, attempted murder, rape again, extortion again and ill-treatment,” he wrote.
“Suspected perpetrators; Ali Mohammed, Mahmod, Mohammed, Mohammed Ali, again, again, again. Christopher… what, is it true? Yes, a Swedish name snuck in on the edges of a drug crime. Mohammed, Mahmod Ali, again and again,” he added.
Springare then listed the suspects’ countries of origin.
“Countries representing all the crimes this week: Iraq, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Somalia, Syria again, Somalia, unknown, unknown country, Sweden. Half of the suspects, we can’t be sure because they don’t have any valid papers. Which in itself usually means that they’re lying about their nationality and identity.”
