Kyle Davies and Su Zhu started Three Arrows Capital at the kitchen table of their apartment in 2012. Now they're among the world's biggest crypto holders with a portfolio worth billions of dollars.
At least for the moment.
Their portfolio was rocked in recent days as environmental concerns over mining, regulatory scrutiny, warnings by Chinese authorities about digital currency payments and a flurry of erratic tweets by Tesla Inc's Elon Musk whipsawed prices. For Davies, an early investor in the space and an evangelist for the underlying technology, the recent volatility is just a blip, enough perhaps to scare off newbie investors, but not for someone who has experienced far more volatile periods.
"Bitcoin's down 30% off the highs, it's really not down very much," the 34-year-old said in an interview from Singapore. "I don't see anyone really being that spooked."
Former traders for Credit Suisse Group AG, Davies and Zhu, the two are among the Wall Street pioneers who've embraced crypto, along with Dan Morehead of Pantera Capital and Mike Novogratz of Galaxy Digital. Now everyone from retail day traders to bankers are jumping in: CNBC reported this month that Aziz McMahon, head of emerging market sales for Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in London quit the bank after making a fortune trading cryptocurrencies for himself.
While many of the early devotees' fortunes rose and fell on the currency's price swings, crypto wealth is quickly turning into real dollars for some, whether through initial public offerings or companies that bring in traditional revenue. Brian Armstrong, co-founder of crypto-wallet Coinbase Global Inc., has a net worth of $9.3 billion after his firm's IPO, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, while Binance's Changpeng Zhao created the world's largest crypto exchange.
Grayscale Stake
Davies and Zhu, also 34, have resisted talking about their fortune and recommended on social media that crypto billionaires do the same.
However, a filing in January revealed the extent of the firm's influence, when Three Arrows reported it owned a 5.6% stake in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, a $22 billion fund invested solely in the cryptocurrency set up by Barry Silbert.
Davies declined to say whether their position had changed or specify how much of the firm's capital belonged to them. Most of their other direct investments in cryptocurrencies and related companies don't need to be publicly disclosed.
The Grayscale stake made Three Arrows the largest shareholder and would have been worth as much as $2.1 billion in April. The trust's shares have since tumbled 43% following Musk's announcement this month that Tesla would suspend accepting the digital currency for purchases of its electric cars because of "rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for Bitcoin mining" and regulatory clampdowns from China.

Despite the environmental spotlight Musk's tweet placed on Bitcoin, Davies said he doesn't believe that those concerns apply across cryptocurrency trading as a whole.
"There are many cryptocurrencies that are proof-of-stake, which use very little if any electricity," Davies said. "That is the direction that a lot of crypto is headed in."
A proof-of-stake setup for a digital currency allows users with significant equity positions to verify transactions. That compares with proof-of-work transactions, such as those used in Bitcoin mining, where users have to complete complex math problems to access a coin, consuming much greater volumes of electricity.
Derivatives Traders
Davies and Zhu attended high school together, then studied at Columbia University in New York before joining Credit Suisse as derivatives traders in Tokyo. After three years at the Swiss bank, they quit and launched Three Arrows Capital to begin trading traditional currencies in emerging markets.
"It was a very inefficient market, and that's where we got our start," Davies said.
Within three years, they went from working in their San Francisco apartment to hiring about 35 people and trading 5% to 10% of all local emerging market currency volumes, he said.
They diversified into options, equities and crypto after "bigger and better firms came in and were better than us" in FX emerging-markets trading, Davies said. By 2018, the firm concentrated exclusively on crypto.
Their Singapore-based company now runs a fund, DeFiance Capital, that invests in decentralized finance, betting that these businesses will "eat traditional finance over the next decade," according to the group's website. Investments include InsurAce, which provides insurance services, and CDEX, a cryptocurrency swap platform.
'Outsized Voices'
"We have been long crypto for a while," Davies said. "We've not always been long Ethereum, in fact we've been short for periods of time, too. What's the best way to beat Bitcoin right now? Well it's just to own Ethereum. The ultimate goal of my book is to outperform Bitcoin."
Davies said that Ethereum is currently the firm's largest cryptocurrency holding. It has gained 245% this year compared with the U.S. dollar, while Bitcoin is up 29%.

Despite the turbulence created by Musk's tweets, Davies said he's less worried about the billionaire's influence on the crypto market with each passing day.
"The thing about outsized voices is they usually don't last very long if they're used too much," Davies said. "If he were to tweet every single day, by the end of the year he would have no price impact."

Tasha Clark tested positive for Covid-19 on April 8, 2020. The Connecticut woman, now 41, was relieved that her symptoms at the time -- diarrhea, sore throat and body aches -- didn't seem particularly severe. She never got a fever and wasn't hospitalized. So she figured that if the virus didn't kill her, within weeks she'd go back to her job and caring for her two children.
She significantly miscalculated. More than a year later, she's a textbook example of a Covid long-hauler.
Clark suffers from an array of disabling symptoms including blowtorch-like nerve pain and loss of sensation in her arms and legs, spine inflammation that makes it difficult to sit up straight, brain fog, dizziness and a soaring heart rate when she stands. She takes steroids and nine other prescription medicines, including twice-monthly infusions of immune therapy at a Yale University clinic to treat the neurological complications.
When her front-desk job at a physical rehabilitation center couldn't accommodate her disability, Clark had to take a lower-paying medical billing position. Her life outside of work is a never-ending odyssey of medical appointments, scans and lab tests. "I never in a million years thought that a year later my life would be reduced to what it has been," says Clark, who lives with her husband and two school-aged girls in Milford. "Not knowing if I will ever recover is scary."

The scope of the mysterious lingering symptoms triggered by Covid-19 is emerging more clearly, based on cases like Clark's. But more than a year into the pandemic, what's causing the symptoms and how best to treat them is anything but clear. Making research especially difficult is that there is such a wide range of health issues involved -- from brain fog to cardiovascular problems to rare cases of psychosis -- and there's no agreed-upon metric for who qualifies as a long-haul patient.
"There is no consensus on how to define, diagnose or measure this syndrome," Steven Deeks, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, told the House Energy and Commerce Committee's health panel on April 28. "Everyone is using different definitions and the state of the art is a mess."
While estimates vary widely, the data suggests that Covid may leave a legacy of consequences after the pandemic is over. A British government survey found that almost 14% of people with Covid reported symptoms lasting at least 12 weeks. In another study from the University of Washington, one-third of those diagnosed with mild Covid cases still had symptoms about six months later.
Further, non-hospitalized Covid-19 patients treated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs had a 59% increased risk of dying in the six months after contracting the disease compared to those who didn't get it, and suffered from conditions such as blood clots, diabetes, stroke and nervous system problems, according to findings published in April in the journal Nature.
"We don't understand what is happening with their biology," says Serena Spudich, a Yale University neurologist treating post-Covid patients. "It is really, really unknown at this point." While the patients' symptoms are clear, brain MRI scans and other tests are often unrevealing, making it tough to determine the cause of the symptoms, she said.
To get a better grip on the problem, the National Institutes of Health is spending $1.15 billion to research long-term Covid and will focus on assembling a giant cohort of tens of thousands of post-Covid patients, who will share data from mobile apps and wearable devices. It has already received 273 research proposals and will announce funding in weeks, NIH director Francis Collins told Congress.
Answers can't come too soon for Eddie Palacios, a 50-year-old commercial real estate broker in Naperville, Illinois. A month after getting a mild case of Covid last September he began forgetting words. One day, he couldn't remember where he was after climbing onto the roof to clean the gutters; his son had to help him down.
"There is definitely memory loss, and headaches that won't go away," says Palacios, who is in cognitive rehab at Northwestern Medicine and takes the prescription stimulant modafinil, used to treat narcolepsy, to boost his alertness.
Still, he must take extensive notes during conversations with clients, something he never used to do. He says he's fortunate that he can do his job from home. "If I were a 9-to-5 guy, I'd be unemployed," he says.
Autoimmune Reaction
What makes people long-haulers? There are at least three possibilities. One leading theory is that the battle with the virus sets off an autoimmune reaction that persists long after the actual virus. This may be what has happened to Clark. The theory is that "the immune system is cranked up" during the initial illness but once the virus is gone, it doesn't come back down, says Avindra Nath, a researcher at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
Another possibility is that fighting Covid-19 leaves behind a detritus of viral particles that sets up a generalized cycle of inflammation long after the pathogen itself has departed. This may help explain why some people continue to test positive long after their infections appear to have cleared.
A third theory is that the virus may find hiding places in human tissues, allowing it to emerge weeks or months later when immunity weakens. Other viruses such as HIV and herpes simplex are known to hide out inside the body for years. If there is such a viral reservoir "it's probably very difficult to get at, it could be very deep in some tissues," said Akiko Iwasaki, a Yale University immunologist.
The hidden reservoir concept, while unproven, is consistent with the fact that some long-haulers initially have milder symptoms, and could also explain anecdotal reports that vaccines provide relief for long-haul patients.
While researchers hunt for answers, major medical centers such as Northwestern Medicine in Illinois and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York have opened clinics to manage patients' myriad symptoms, providing help to those lucky enough to get it. Yale's neurocovid clinic was set up this past October and has treated about 100 patients, including Clark.
Clark's husband, Richard Zayas, a 47-year-old carpenter, came down with Covid in early April 2020. A few days later, she developed a horrible taste in her mouth, unlikely anything she had ever experienced before.
The first neurological symptoms came a week into her illness, when she burnt her arm taking something out of the oven because she didn't notice the hot pan touching her. A few weeks later, just as her sore throat and cough were subsiding, she began losing sensation in her legs. Coming home from a drive, her legs gave out and she had to pull herself up the steps to her house by her arms. Though she suspected it was a complication of Covid, doctors at the local emergency room said a lot of things could be causing the symptoms and sent her home without extensive tests, she says.
Burning Pain
A skin biopsy later found signs of nerve damage, and doctors put her on gabapentin for the pain. But her symptoms worsened, and by July she was diagnosed with peripheral polyneuropathy. Over the summer, she fell multiple times going up and down the stairs in her house, or walking in the yard. This winter, burning pain in her feet was so bad that several times she went outside and stood barefoot in the snow or on bare concrete to numb the pain.
"My skin feels like someone is holding a blowtorch to it," she says.
Since getting sick, Clark says she has had more than 50 doctor visits, and numerous procedures including two lumbar punctures, MRI scans of the pelvis, cognitive tests and multiple sleep studies. In addition to neuropathy, she's been been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune-related arthritis of the spine, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which produced rapid heartbeat and a light-headed feeling upon standing.
Doctors "think my immune system went in overdrive when I got the virus and since never shut off," she said. "It has basically been attacking my body ever since."
When other treatments didn't fully improve her symptoms, Yale doctors early this year put Clark on infusions of intravenous immune globulin, a costly antibody infusion. Lindsay McAlpine, a neurology resident at Yale's neurocovid clinic, says they only give immunoglobulin to post-Covid patients whose symptoms have a clear autoimmune link.
After being away from her front-desk job for eight months, Clark went back remotely in December but said she had to quit when her bosses insisted she return to the office. She found a medical billing job that can be done from her armchair. But it pays $1.47 an hour less, meaning she has to work overtime to keep up. She is so exhausted after work she can't do much at home.
The scariest part for Clark is not knowing how long the symptoms will last. When she contracted Covid more than 13 months ago, "I thought maybe two or three weeks tops and I would be back to my old self," she says. "I have been sick every day since."

The India-dominant coronavirus variant has now been officially recorded in 53 territories, a World Health Organization report showed Wednesday.
Additionally, the WHO has received information from unofficial sources that the B.1.617 variant has been found in seven other territories, figures in the UN health agency's weekly epidemiological update showed, taking the total to 60.
The report said B.1.617 had shown increased transmissibility, while disease severity and risk of infection were under investigation.
Globally over the past week, the number of new cases and deaths continued to decrease, with around 4.1 million new cases and 84,000 new deaths reported -- a 14 percent and two percent decrease respectively compared to the previous week.
The WHO's European region reported the largest decline in new cases and deaths in the past seven days, followed by the southeast Asia region.
The numbers of cases reported by the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and the Western Pacific region were similar to those reported in the previous week.
"Despite a declining global trend over the past four weeks, incidence of Covid-19 cases and deaths remain high, and substantial increases have been observed in many countries throughout the world," the document said.
The highest numbers of new cases in the past seven days were reported from India (1,846,055 -- down 23 percent); Brazil (451,424 -- up three percent); Argentina (213,046 -- up 41 percent), the United States (188,410 -- down 20 percent), and Colombia (107,590 -- down seven percent).
Variant detection
The update gave information on the four mutations classed as variants of concern: those first reported in Britain (B.1.1.7), South Africa (B.1.351), Brazil (P.1) and India (B.1.617).
When counting up the total number of territories reporting each variant, the WHO added together those from which it had official and unofficial information.
B.1.1.7 has now been reported in 149 territories; B.1.351 in 102 territories and P.1 in 59 territories.
The WHO split up figures for the B.1.617 variant into three lineages (B.1.617.1, B.1.617.2 and B.1.617.3).
The first has been reported in a total of 41 territories, the second in 54 and the third in six: Britain, Canada, Germany, India, Russia and the United States.
Together, lineages of the B.1.617 variant were officially recorded in 53 territories and unofficially in another seven.
The update also listed six variants of interest that are being monitored.
One was first discovered in multiple countries, two of them were first found in the United States, while the three others were first discovered in Brazil, the Philippines and France.
"Virus evolution is expected, and the more SARS-CoV-2 circulates, the more opportunities it has to evolve," the report said.
"Reducing transmission through established and proven disease-control methods... are crucial aspects of the global strategy to reduce the occurrence of mutations that have negative public health implications."

The family of George Floyd appealed Tuesday for sweeping police reform on the anniversary of the African American man's murder by a white officer, as they met President Joe Biden at the White House.
The president and Kamala Harris, America's first female and first Black vice president, hosted several of Floyd's relatives in the Oval Office after the family spoke to top lawmakers hoping for progress on reform.
"The Floyd family has shown extraordinary courage," Biden said after their meeting -- declaring himself "hopeful" that a deal could be struck after the Memorial Day holiday this weekend.
The legislation being considered to increase police accountability would be named after Floyd, who suffocated after being pinned down under the knee of Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020.
"If you can make federal laws to protect the bird, the bald eagle, you can make federal laws to protect people of color," Philonise Floyd, George's younger brother, said as he emerged from the private meeting, which lasted over an hour.
Another brother, Terrence Floyd, said as he left the White House that he was encouraged by the "productive conversation" in which Biden and Harris were eager to "actually give an ear to our concerns."
Floyd's mother, siblings and his daughter Gianna, along with family lawyers, had earlier gathered at the US Capitol with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic members of Congress.
While the adults discussed their hopes for police reform, it was seven-year-old Gianna -- hugging her mother Roxie Washington -- who eloquently addressed the lasting legacy of her late father, saying he would "change the world."
"He did," Biden said in a statement after meeting the family nearly a year after their first encounter ahead of Floyd's funeral.
"I got a chance to spend a lot of time with Gianna and the family," he said. "They've been wonderful."
The family later visited Black Lives Matter Plaza close to the White House, which became a focal point for demonstrations in the weeks after Floyd's death.
"What's going on in America you can clearly see this right now, it's two justice systems -- so we need to get together as one and get the situation straight," said Philonise Floyd. "Whatever I have to do to get this law passed, I will do, we want freedom, be able to walk in peace."
- Culture of impunity -
Floyd's death sparked protests against racial injustice and police brutality across a country already crackling with tension from the election battle between Biden and Donald Trump.
Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes as he passed out and died, is to be sentenced in June for murder and manslaughter.
In a sign Biden wants to confront head on what he sees as systemic racism, the White House announced the president will travel to Oklahoma on June 1 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre in which an estimated 300 Black men, women and children were killed.
In the wake of Chauvin's conviction last month, Biden sought to build on political momentum by urging Congress to pass a far-reaching police reform bill in time for the anniversary.
However, the ambitious deadline comes with only the House having passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, while the Senate continues to wrangle over key details.
Despite missing Biden's hoped-for deadline, Representative Karen Bass, a co-author of the reform bill, reiterated her commitment to Democrats and Republicans negotiating a compromise.
"We will get this bill on President Biden's desk," she said at the meeting with the Floyd family. "We will work until we get the job done. It will be passed in a bipartisan manner."
The proposed law seeks to reform what critics say have become ever more violent and unaccountable police forces around the country.
Biden says a culture of impunity and underlying racism has made tragedies like Floyd's death increasingly common, although opponents believe police operating in often heavily armed communities are being scapegoated.
As if to highlight the staggering number of US shootings, multiple gunshots rang out Tuesday near the site in Minneapolis where people were marking the anniversary of Floyd's killing.
Shortly afterward a patient arrived at hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, police said.
- 'Spilled blood' -
The police reform bill would ban potentially fatal restraint techniques used on suspects, like chokeholds, and end so-called "no-knock warrants" that authorize police to burst into a suspect's house unannounced.
The most far-reaching of the measures would be to end current legal protections that block civil lawsuits against police accused of misconduct.
"It should be that we all want better policing," Floyd family attorney Ben Crump said.
"We have to respect the spilled blood that's on this legislation," he added. "It must be meaningful, and we can do this together."

The British government has claimed that it intends to send private security contractors to knock on the doors of anyone returning from holidays to make sure they are quarantining upon their return, as required by law.
Home Secretary Priti Patel <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9597685/Priti-Patel-reveals-plans-10-000-quarantine-checks-day.html">announced Wednesday</a> that those returning from destinations that have not been added to the government’s ‘green list’ should expect to be checked on at their homes.
The warning comes after the government lifted international travel restrictions on Monday, allowing people to go on holiday, but with extensive caveats.
Patel claimed that 10,000 checks will be conducted every day by private contractors hired <a href="https://www.mitie.com/all-services/security-fire/?filter-service=security-and-fire&filter-search=">via the firm Mitie</a>, and if people are found to be flouting quarantine or acting noncompliant, police will be called to deal with them, with the authorisation to issue fines of up to £10,000.
The government has decreed that a negative PCR test and ten day quarantine is required for anyone returning from countries it has not deemed to be completely safe to visit, including the popular destinations of The U.S., France, Spain and Greece.

Discouraging travel to so called ‘amber list’ countries, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-travel-expect-knock-on-the-door-when-you-return-from-amber-countries-priti-patel-warns-12311649">told Sky News</a> Thursday that “You’ve got to quarantine. People will come to your house to check your quarantine. It’s expensive. We’re not at the stage of saying to people, go to those places on holiday. Please don’t.”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock also claimed that the door to door checks are already underway, with 30,000 being conducted last week.
Boris Johnson told MPs yesterday that visits to medium-risk destinations are only acceptable in ‘extreme circumstances’. 
The announcement came after millions of people had already booked trips to the destinations, and in many cases have already arrived there, prompting fury from travellers, airlines and booking agents.
Julia Lo Bue-Said, of Advantage Travel Partnership described the government’s actions as “typical nanny state tactics.”
She added “Surely the British public can make up their own mind if they wish to quarantine in order to visit an amber country. As long as protocols are followed, testing is in place and rules in the destination are adhered to we see no reason why we cannot be allowed to travel safely to amber destinations for leisure. Otherwise, make those amber countries red.”
In related news, it has been revealed that UK ‘Covid passports’ officially rolled out for use during international travel <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/20/privacy-watchdog-uk-covid-passport-small-print-says-it-will-be-used-domestically/">will eventually be used domestically</a> to restrict the movement of the population, according to the small print on the NHS website.

Video: News Reporter Talks About “Police Reform” as Gunshots Ring Out at George Floyd Square

Numerous people are pointing out the chilling irony of a video which shows a news reporter talking about “police reform” at George Floyd Square as a criminal gunman began firing shots.
The one year anniversary of Floyd’s death has provided Black Lives Matter activists and their slavishly sympathetic mainstream media echo chamber yet another opportunity to push divisive rhetoric and extremist policies.
One such news reporter was doing precisely that by beginning a monologue about “police reform” while live from George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, only to be interrupted by the sound of gunfire.
“We just gotta be careful here with some gunshots,” states the reporter as he ducks for cover while the shots continue to be heard.

“It sounds like gunshots, I’ll let you know what this is,” he adds as others are seen running away in the background.
“Shit, where is that?” he then asks are more shots are fired.
Only one person appears to have been injured during the incident, which is surprising given the amount of bullets fired.
“The suspected shooter was last seen driving away from the scene, according to police,” reports NBC News. No other details, including a motive for the shooting or the identity of the victim, were immediately available.
“Maybe the bigger problem isn’t the police,” commented one respondent.
