Washington:
Amazon was hit Tuesday with an antitrust suit from the US capital city Washington, claiming the tech giant abuses its dominant position in online retail sales, harming consumers.
The suit filed by the office of Attorney General Karl Racine alleges that Amazon's control of 50 to 70 percent of US e-commerce sales results in higher consumer prices.
"Amazon's online retail sales platform benefits from, and is protected by, Amazon's anticompetitive business practices," said the suit filed in District of Columbia superior court.
"Far from enabling consumers to obtain the best products at the lowest prices, Amazon instead causes prices across the entire online retail sales market to be artificially inflated, both for products sold on Amazon's online retail sales platform and on its competitors' online retail sales platforms."
Amazon, which has long claimed it delivers lower prices for consumers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The lawsuit comes amid heightened scrutiny of large tech platforms which have increased their dominance during the pandemic.
US state and federal antitrust enforcers last year filed suits targeting Facebook and Google alleging illegal dominance of their respective markets.
Racine's lawsuit seeks to stop Amazon from "anticompetitive" practices and calls for damages and other penalties.

Moscow:
The Russian girlfriend of a Belarusian dissident arrested with him when their plane was diverted to Minsk is being held on suspicion of crimes at the time of protests last year, Moscow said Tuesday.
Sofia Sapega, a 23-year-old law student at the European Humanities University (EHU) in Lithuania, was detained along with opposition journalist Roman Protasevich, 26, when their Athens-to-Vilnius flight was diverted to Minsk on Sunday.
The diversion, prompted by a supposed bomb scare, provoked a global outcry and Western leaders have been calling for both to be released.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement Tuesday that Sapega was being held on suspicion of "committing crimes" between August and September 2020.
That period corresponds with the outbreak of mass anti-government protests that rocked ex-Soviet Belarus after a disputed presidential election in August last year.
The charges against Sapega were not specified, but Zakharova said they are covered by several articles of the Belarusian criminal code.
After three days, there will be a ruling on whether to release her or put her in pre-trial detention, the statement added.
Zakharova said a Russian consul met on Monday with Sapega's parents, who live in western Belarus.
Russia is expecting to get permission for a consular meeting with Sapega soon, she said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier Tuesday that he "hopes that in the near future" Sapega will be released.
Protasevich fled to Europe in 2019 from where he co-ran the Nexta Telegram channels, a key Belarus opposition media that helped mobilise protesters.
In Belarus he faces charges of organising mass unrest, an offence punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

Washington:
US President Joe Biden and Russia's President Vladimir Putin will hold their first summit next month in Geneva, both sides said Tuesday, setting the stage for a new chapter in their fraught relationship.
The meeting in the Swiss city will be on June 16, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.
"The leaders will discuss the full range of pressing issues, as we seek to restore predictability and stability to the US-Russia relationship," she said.
The Kremlin confirmed the summit details and said in a statement that Putin and Biden would be discussing "issues of strategic stability," as well as "resolving regional conflicts" and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Biden, making his first international trip as president, will go to Geneva immediately after separate summits with his key Western allies in the G7, NATO and the European Union.
The face-to-face meeting with the Kremlin leader comes amid levels of tension not seen for years, with Washington now dialling back its ambitions to little more than establishing a relationship in which both sides understand each other and can work together in specific areas.
Since taking office, Biden has launched new sanctions against Moscow over what US authorities say was the Russian role in the massive Solar Winds cyber attack and repeated meddling in the 2020 presidential election.
Washington has also harshly criticized Moscow for the near-death poisoning and subsequent imprisonment of one of the last open opponents to Putin, Alexei Navalny.
And where Biden told an interviewer that he agreed with the description of Putin as a "killer," the Russian government has formally declared the United States to be an "unfriendly" country.
Moves to ease tension
The open recriminations are a long way from the often puzzling relationship between Trump and Putin.
The Geneva summit will come almost three years after Trump famously sided with the Kremlin leader over the US intelligence agencies on the question of whether Moscow interfered in the 2016 US presidential election.
However, both sides are working to calm the waters ahead of the Geneva summit, with the White House emphasizing hopes for working alongside Russia on well-defined strategic issues like nuclear weapons control and the Iran nuclear negotiations.
To prepare the ground, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and veteran Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met last week in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said after the Blinken-Lavrov meeting that repairing ties "will not be easy" but he saw "a positive signal."
Moscow welcomed a US decision to waive sanctions that had been holding up completion of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline -- a major energy supply route from Russia to Europe that US officials worry will make the EU overdependent on the Russians.

The UK branch of Black Lives Matter has suffered a significant defeat after it was revealed that a statue of Cecil Rhodes will remain at Oxford’s Oriel College.
Following the transatlantic riots and protests after the death of George Floyd last summer, campaigners had hoped that the “controversial” monument would be permanently removed.
Despite the College itself expressing a desire to remove the statue, in addition to a ruling by an independent commission which came to the same conclusion, Rhodes is safe for the time being because of the costs associated with expelling him from the Grade II listed High Street building.
“The governing body has carefully considered the regulatory and financial challenges, including the expected time frame for removal, which could run into years with no certainty of outcome, together with the total cost of removal,” said a statement by the College.
“In light of the considerable obstacles to removal, Oriel’s governing body has decided not to begin the legal process for relocation of the memorials. Instead, it is determined to focus its time and resources on delivering the report’s recommendations around the contextualisation of the College’s relationship with Rhodes, as well as improving educational equality, diversity and inclusion amongst its student cohort and academic community.”

College bosses were reportedly also wary of setting a precedent which could have seen numerous other historical statues and memorials removed throughout the world.
According to leftists, Rhodes is the “Hitler of southern Africa” due to his role in British imperialism, “stealing” land and setting up proto-apartheid policies in the 19th century.
A 2016 <a href="https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2016/01/18/rhodes-must-not-fall">poll</a> found that 59 per cent of Brits wanted the statue to stay and this led to the College asserting they wouldn’t remove it, a decision that <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/jan/28/cecil-rhodes-statue-will-not-be-removed--oxford-university">attracted</a> “overwhelming support.”
However, with woke jihadists now emboldened in their demented iconoclasm due to weaker and weaker opposition, the statue’s long term future is far from certain.
According to the <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/05/20/rhodes-statue-will-stay-despite-ruling-remove-oxford-college/?utm_content=telegraph&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1621505651">Telegraph</a>, while the ruling is a victory for free speech, it is likely to “spark a backlash from campaigners.”
Despite the statue sitting near the top of the 4 story building, don’t put it beyond far-left extremists to try to physically remove it themselves.

According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York), Ilhan Omar (Minnesota), Cori Bush (Missouri) and Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts) privately built up their own protection forces, while telling the public that they shouldn’t rely on police protection, and that police departments should be defunded because of ‘institutional racism’.

The records show that Ocasio-Cortez paid one company based out of Brooklyn, New York, $9,000 for 3 months of security consulting. She then also spent more than $24,000 on ‘security’ on January 25, and almost $4,000 on ‘security services’ on January 19, with a further payment of $849.22 for ‘security services’ on February 2.
According to the records, Rep. Omar spent <a href="https://docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/C00680934/1511894/sb/ALL" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">$3,103.61</a> on private security, with Pressley spending <a href="https://docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/C00667741/1511104/sb/ALL">$4,186.75</a> on “security Services,” and Cori Bush reported to have spent <a href="https://docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/C00638767/1511215/sb/ALL" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">$30,000</a> on security.

Last year after unrest and violence targeting police, Harvard university Professor Roland Fryer <a href="https://summit.news/2020/06/16/harvard-professor-defunding-the-police-is-not-a-solution-and-could-cost-thousands-of-black-lives/">urged that defunding the police would cause more loss of life</a>, citing figures showing that there are “450 excess homicides per year” when police are not able to do their jobs proficiently.
“Defunding the police is not a solution and could cost thousands of black lives,” professor Fryer wrote in an email to <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/harvard-professors-research-defunding-the-police-could-cost-thousands-of-black-lives/">the College Fix</a>.
Fryer has recently authored a research paper titled <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w27324.pdf">“Policing the Police: The Impact of “Pattern-or-Practice Investigations on Crime,”</a> noting that police are less present when ‘viral incidents’ occur, meaning crime, including homicides increase… a lot.
Last year it was reported by the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/23/nyregion/nyc-shootings-surge.html?referringSource=articleShare">New York Times</a> that Gun violence is up 358% in New York City since June 2019 as police are being stripped of resources in Democrat run cities nationwide.
The explosion in gun violence dovetailed with the <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/all/nypd-disbanding-unit-last-chapter-stop-frisk-n1231135">disbanding of NYPD anti-crime units</a>, a decision that meant around 600 plainclothes officers were taken off targeted raids and reassigned.
In addition, Democrat imposed “reforms” have meant that around 40% of people arrested on gun possession charges were released without bail in 2019.
Figures also show that other Democrat run cities including <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2020/6/6/21282353/chicago-crime-statistics-may-2020-overall-down-shootings-murders-up-unrest-protests-gun-violence">Chicago</a> and <a href="https://www.startribune.com/downtown-east-leads-minneapolis-neighborhoods-in-crime-increase/567777542/">Minneapolis</a> have experienced a massive uptick in gun violence.
Despite the crime spike, the Minneapolis City Council <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/tommybeer/2020/06/12/minneapolis-city-council-unanimously-votes-to-replace-police-with-community-led-model/">unanimously passed a resolution</a> to replace the police department with a “community-led public safety system.”
