Beijing:
China on Monday dismissed as "totally untrue" reports that three researchers in Wuhan went to <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/chinas-wuhan-lab-staff-took-hospital-care-before-covid-19-outbreak-disclosed-wsj-report-2448111" target="_self">hospital with an illness</a> shortly before the coronavirus emerged in the city and spread around the globe.
Since infecting its first victims in the central Chinese city in late 2019, the pathogen has afflicted almost every country in the world, killing more than 3.4 million people and pummelling national economies.
Beijing has always fiercely fought the theory that it could have escaped from one of its laboratories.
Citing a US intelligence report, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the trio from the Wuhan Institute of Virology were affected as early as November 2019, suffering from "symptoms consistent with both Covid-19 and common seasonal illness".
China disclosed the existence of an outbreak of pneumonia cases in Wuhan to the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 31, 2019.
Asked about the reports on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian described them as "totally untrue".
He told reporters that, according to a statement from the institute, it "had not been exposed to Covid-19 before December 30, 2019, and a "zero-infection" record is kept among its staff and graduate students so far".
The coronavirus was, however, taken to the lab for study, according to Chinese authorities.
The theory that the killer virus leaked from a Chinese lab was fuelled by, among others, the administration of former US president Donald Trump.
But in March, after a four-week stay in Wuhan, a joint study by the WHO and Chinese experts deemed such an explanation "extremely unlikely".
Experts favour the generally accepted theory of the natural transmission of the virus from an animal -- probably a bat -- to humans, through another animal that has not yet been identified.
Some believe, however, that WHO specialists did not have enough space to work freely during their investigation in Wuhan.

Kuala Lumpur:
More than 200 people were injured in Malaysia on Monday when two metro light rail trains collided in an underground tunnel close to the Petronas Twin Towers in the capital Kuala Lumpur, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 8.45 PM (1245 GMT) when one of the trains, which was empty after being repaired, collided head-on with another train carrying 213 passengers travelling in the opposite direction on the same track, district police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said.
Forty-seven people were severely hurt and 166 others sustained minor injuries, he told reporters. The crash occurred in a section of tunnel about 100 metres (330 feet) away from the KLCC station outside the Petronas towers.
"We are still investigating the incident..., but we suspect that perhaps there was a miscommunication from the trains' operations control center," Mohamad Zainal said.
Videos and photos of the incident posted on social media showed several bleeding commuters and broken glass panels inside the trains, operated by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.
Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said the collision was the first major accident in the metro system's 23 years of operation, and he pledged a thorough investigation.
The 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest twin towers in the world.

Yangon:
An American editor of a Myanmar-based news outlet was detained by authorities in Yangon as he attempted to board a flight out of the country Monday, his employers said.
United States citizen and managing editor of Frontier Myanmar Danny Fenster was detained at Yangon International Airport, his employers said in a statement on their verified Twitter account.
"We do not know why Danny was detained and have not been able to contact him since this morning. We are concerned for his wellbeing and call for his immediate release," Frontier said.
"Our priorities right now are to make sure he is safe and to provide him with whatever assistance he needs."
Myanmar has been in uproar since the February 1 coup, with near-daily protests and a nationwide civil disobedience movement.
More than 800 people have been killed by the military, according to a local monitoring group.
The press has been caught in the junta's crackdown as the military attempts to tighten control over the flow of information, throttling internet access and revoking the licenses of five local media outlets.
Fenster, 37, had been working for the outlet for around a year and was heading home to see his family, Frontier's chief editor Thomas Kean told AFP.
"We learned about 10 am that Danny had not been allowed to board his flight from Yangon airport," he said.
At least 34 journalists and photographers remain in custody across Myanmar, according to monitoring group Reporting ASEAN.
Frontier said it understood Fenster had been transferred to Yangon's notorious Insein Prison.
Japanese reporter Yuki Kitazumi was detained by authorities in Myanmar last month and was held in the same prison until being freed last week.
On his return to Tokyo he said political prisoners in the jail had told him they were tortured with beatings and sleep deprivation.
In March a BBC journalist was briefly detained after being seized by plainclothes officers while reporting outside a court in the capital Naypyidaw.
Separately, Polish photojournalist Robert Bociaga -- who was also arrested while covering protests -- was released in March after nearly a fortnight in detention.
The arrest comes as detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi voiced defiance Monday in her first court appearance since being detained in the coup, vowing her ousted political party would live on.
In the 2021 Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index, Myanmar ranked 140 out of 180 countries.
Since the February coup, journalists in Myanmar "face systematic arrest campaigns and censorship", the watchdog said.
"Many will resign themselves to working clandestinely in order to be free to report what is happening and to evade the police."

The BBC said Monday it will review its editorial policies and governance after an independent report <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/ex-bbc-journalist-martin-bashirs-apology-to-william-harry-over-diana-interview-never-wanted-to-harm-diana-2447575" target="_self">found one of its journalists</a> used deception to secure a landmark interview with Princess Diana.
The British broadcaster's board said the internal probe would be conducted by a group of non-executive directors led by Nick Serota, its senior independent director, and report back by September.
"We must not just assume that mistakes of the past cannot be repeated today -- we must make sure that this is the case," the board of governors said in a lengthy statement.
"We think it is right that we review the effectiveness of the BBC's editorial policies and governance in detail," it added.
An investigation by retired judge John Dyson concluded last Thursday that journalist Martin Bashir had tricked Diana's brother Charles Spencer into helping to arrange the 1995 interview, in which she spoke candidly about her troubled marriage to Prince Charles.
Bashir commissioned fake bank statements that falsely suggested some of Diana's closest aides were being paid by the security services to keep tabs on her.
He then showed them to Spencer in a successful bid to earn their trust and land the sensational sit-down.
Dyson's report also found the BBC's own internal probes into longstanding allegations of impropriety by Bashir were "woefully ineffective".
Princes William and Harry, Diana's two sons, have severely criticised Bashir and the BBC over their conduct, saying his actions contributed to events that led to Diana's death in a car crash nearly two years after the interview.
But Bashir has defended himself, arguing that Diana was eager to speak out and that he should not be held responsible for "many of the other things that were going on in her life".
The BBC said its latest review would assess the strength of "day-to-day editorial processes and a clear route by which to handle any specific issues" arising from the damning report.
"The board will look at the culture of the BBC as part of its remit to assess the effectiveness of policies and practice," it vowed.
"Their work will focus on oversight of the BBC's editorial practices and will consider in detail the robustness and independence of whistleblowing processes in editorial areas."
The broadcaster, funded through a compulsory subscription fee, is under renewed pressure from the government and its critics following the report's publication.
Earlier Monday, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden accused it of adopting a "we know best" attitude over the scandal.

Moscow:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday defended a decision by Belarusian authorities to divert a <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/europe-threatens-to-limit-belarus-air-traffic-after-plane-forced-to-land-2448471" target="_self">Ryanair passenger flight</a> carrying an opposition activist who was arrested.
The flight from Athens to Vilnius was forced to land in the Belarus capital Minsk Sunday on the orders of strongman Alexander Lukashenko following a supposed bomb scare.
One of the flight's passengers, wanted opposition activist Roman Protasevich, was detained in Minsk airport.
Western leaders called the incident an "act of state terrorism" and the EU was expected Monday to toughen sanctions against Belarus.
Lavrov told journalists that Belarus had treated the incident with an "absolutely reasonable approach".
"A representative of the Belarusian foreign ministry... stressed the readiness of the Belarusian authorities to act on the issue in a transparent manner and to follow all international rules," Lavrov said during a press conference following a meeting with his Greek counterpart.
"I think this is an absolutely reasonable approach."
He called on the global community to "soberly assess the situation".
Earlier Monday, authorities in Belarus insisted they had acted legally when they diverted the flight. They instead accused the West of making unfounded claims for political reasons.
Protasevich, 26, is a Belarusian journalist and activist.
Together with co-founder Stepan Putilo he had until recently run the Nexta telegram channel that galvanised and directed huge protests against Lukashenko's disputed re-election to a sixth term in August 2020.
Last year, Protasevich and Putilo were accused by Belarusian authorities of a number of crimes including organising mass riots. Protasevich left the Nexta project last year.
He faces a sentence of up to 15 years in Belarus.

Questions Over Social Media Censorship of Wuhan Lab Leak After Fauci Admits Possibility

A previously unseen US intelligence report has revealed that at least three researchers working at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where coronavirus experiments were being conducted, were hospitalised in mid November 2019 with symptoms matching those of COVID.
The revelations lend yet more credence to the notion that the pandemic was caused by a lab leak and did not emerge naturally.
The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/intelligence-on-sick-staff-at-wuhan-lab-fuels-debate-on-covid-19-origin-11621796228">reports</a> that “The disclosure of the number of researchers, the timing of their illnesses and their hospital visits come on the eve of a meeting of the World Health Organization’s decision-making body, which is expected to discuss the next phase of an investigation into Covid-19’s origins.”
The report also notes “The details of the reporting go beyond a State Department <a href="https://2017-2021.state.gov/fact-sheet-activity-at-the-wuhan-institute-of-virology/index.html">fact sheet</a>, issued during the final days of the Trump administration, which said that several researchers at the lab, a center for the study of coronaviruses and other pathogens, became sick in autumn 2019 ‘with symptoms consistent with both Covid-19 and common seasonal illness.’”
According to the Journal, the intelligence comes from multiple sources and is “very precise.”
As we <a href="https://summit.news/2021/01/13/report-trump-to-present-bombshell-evidence-that-covid-came-from-wuhan-lab/">reported back in January</a>, as Trump was leaving office he promised more ‘Bombshell’ evidence would emerge linking the outbreak to the Wuhan lab and the Chinese military.
Chinese virologists <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/chinese-virologist-flees-hong-kong-accuses-beijing-covid-19-cover">fled Hong Kong</a> some time ago and effectively <a href="https://www.infowars.com/people-are-going-to-be-shocked-bannon-claims-wuhan-lab-employees-have-defected-are-working-with-fbi/">defected to the West</a>, providing evidence against the Chinese Communist Party concerning its role in the COVID-19 pandemic. It is possible that this information came from those researchers, one of whom formerly worked in the Wuhan lab.
The new details contradict Chinese government claims that the first cases of the virus were not observed until December 8th 2019. They also dovetail with previously unconfirmed claims by the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3074991/coronavirus-chinas-first-confirmed-covid-19-case-traced-back">South China Morning Post</a> that there exists Chinese government data documenting initial cases on November 17, 2019, more than three weeks earlier.
Commenting on the revelations, David Asher, the State Department’s former lead investigator on the origins of the virus said it is “very doubtful that three people in highly protected circumstances” all became sick with “severe conditions all in the same week, and it didn’t have anything to do with the coronavirus.”
Asher has <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/top-state-official-coronavirus-bioweapon-accident">previously said</a> that the intelligence points to an involvement of the Chinese military conducting bioweapons research at the lab.
“Motive, cover-up, conspiracy, all the hallmarks of guilt are associated with this. And the fact that the initial cluster of victims surrounded the very institute that was doing the highly dangerous, if not dubious research is significant,” Asher said.
China’s Foreign Ministry has responded to the developments by issuing a response insisting that there were no reported Covid-19 cases among staff and students at the virology institute.
Last week, GOP representatives on the House Intelligence Committee <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/17/gop-reps-demand-intel-update-from-biden-on-wuhan-lab-leak-possibility/">demanded an update</a> from the White House and the Director of National Intelligence on the possibility that the coronavirus leaked from the lab in Wuhan.
The Republicans, led by Ranking Member Devin Nunes also want access to any intelligence on the <a href="https://archives.infowars.com/global-bombshell-china-admits-to-developing-testing-covid-19-in-wuhan-level-4-lab/">“gain of function” research</a> that was undertaken at the Wuhan lab in conjunction with US agencies.
Even Biden’s own CDC Director <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/20/bidens-cdc-director-says-lab-origin-of-covid-19-a-possibility/">said this week</a> that there is a “possibility” that the COVID-19 virus was leaked from the Wuhan lab.
Leftist media and ‘fact checking’ outlets have repeatedly dismissed the notion as a ‘conspiracy theory’, but are <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/21/politifact-forced-to-pull-fact-check-that-debunked-lab-leak-origin-of-covid/">now doing an about face on the matter.</a>
As Infowars <a href="https://archives.infowars.com/global-bombshell-china-admits-to-developing-testing-covid-19-in-wuhan-level-4-lab/">reported in April 2020</a>, the NIH awarded a $3.7 million grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology to conduct coronavirus gain of function research.
Additionally, the results of the US-backed gain of function research at Wuhan was published in 2017 under the heading, “<a href="https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1006698">Discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses provides new insights into the origin of SARS coronavirus</a>.”
White House Medical advisor Dr Anthony Fauci has come under <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/tucker-carlson-calls-for-investigation-into-fauci-wuhan-lab-connection/">increased scrutiny</a> as the NIH’s involvement with the Wuhan lab is being <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fauci-niaid-wuhan-lab-funding-ron-johnson-coronavirus">called into question.</a>
Fauci is now backtracking on previous dismissals of the lab leak theory, and even admitting to his own involvement in the research that was going on there.

As we <a href="https://summit.news/2021/01/04/us-national-security-still-believes-coronavirus-leaked-from-chinese-lab/">reported earlier in the year</a>, top US National Security officials have indicated that they believe the most credible theory on the origin of COVID-19 is that it escaped from the Chinese laboratory.
It previously emerged that the Wuhan lab had held a coronavirus sample that was <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/virus-samples-with-96-resemblance-to-covid-19-were-sent-to-wuhan-lab-in-2013-311205">96.2 per cent the same as Covid-19</a> for almost a decade. This prompted the speculation about the origin of the virus.
In addition, <a href="https://summit.news/2020/06/15/report-wuhan-lab-took-delivery-of-worlds-deadliest-viruses-months-prior-to-coronavirus-outbreak/">previous reports</a> have suggested that the Institute took a shipment of some of the world’s deadliest pathogens just weeks before the outbreak of the coronavirus. It is also known that the lab was tampering with natural pathogens and mutating them to become more infectious.
The notion of the virus coming from the Wuhan lab is not some fringe conspiracy theory, rather it has been advocated by leading scientific, intelligence and political figures globally.
Former CDC director Robert Redfield, a leading virologist, <a href="https://summit.news/2021/03/26/former-cdc-director-tells-cnn-coronavirus-likely-escaped-from-wuhan-lab/">told CNN in March</a> that he believes the coronavirus may have escaped from the Wuhan lab as far back as September 2019.
A prominent German scientist with the University of Hamburg <a href="https://summit.news/2021/02/19/german-university-study-most-likely-covid-came-from-wuhan-lab-leak/">released findings</a> in February of a year long study that concludes the most likely cause of the coronavirus pandemic was a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Several other <a href="https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4068627">prominent researchers</a> and <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8249875/Wuhan-laboratory-scientists-did-absolutely-crazy-things-alter-coronavirus.html">scientists</a> <a href="https://summit.news/2020/05/18/austrian-study-finds-sign-of-human-intervention-in-coronavirus/">have also noted</a> that the lab <a href="https://summit.news/2020/04/24/us-lab-director-who-visited-wuhan-viral-facilty-accidents-happen/">must be investigated</a>.
A select group of the world’s leading scientists recently <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/14/worlds-leading-scientists-who-has-failed-to-make-balanced-consideration-on-possibility-covid-leaked-from-chinese-lab/">penned an open letter</a> urging more investigation into the possibility that the coronavirus pandemic was caused by a leak from the Institute, saying that the World Health Organisation has dismissed the notion without proper consideration.
Other <a href="https://summit.news/2020/06/04/former-mi6-head-coronavirus-is-man-made-released-from-a-lab/">Intelligence figures</a> <a href="https://summit.news/2020/05/04/two-separate-reports-confirm-most-intel-agencies-in-us-believe-coronavirus-came-from-wuhan-lab/">across the globe</a> have also <a href="https://summit.news/2020/04/28/report-five-global-intelligence-agencies-investigating-wuhan-bat-scientist-over-virus-lab-leak/">called for the Wuhan lab to be investigated.</a>
The WHO previously complained that it had <a href="https://summit.news/2020/05/01/pathetic-who-complains-it-has-not-been-invited-to-investigate-coronavirus-outbreak-by-china/">‘not been invited’</a> by China to investigate the outbreak, and has continually been criticised for <a href="https://www.infowars.com/sources-tell-fox-news-who-was-complicit-in-helping-china-cover-up-coronavirus-leak-from-wuhan-lab/">propping up Communist Party talking points</a>.
