“Shocked and horrified”: Gaza news bureau is destroyed on live TV

Israel’s military <a href="https://twitter.com/kalvin_ng/status/1393542971111378950?s=20">leveled</a> a Gaza tower that housed offices for Al Jazeera and the Associated Press on Saturday as it continues to escalate its <a href="https://www.vox.com/22430488/israel-gaza-war-2021-hamas-sheikh-jarrah">campaign</a> against the Hamas militant group.
The 11-story al-Jalaa building, which also included residential housing, collapsed after being hit by an Israeli air strike, which the Israel Defense Forces said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/IDF/status/1393565656621137920?s=20">tweet</a> Saturday was intended to target “Hamas military intelligence assets” allegedly based in the tower.
The building’s destruction was covered <a href="https://twitter.com/swilsonnews/status/1393545932743061507?s=20">live by Al Jazeera</a>, and the AP <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-middle-east-business-israel-palestinian-conflict-f595d0ea0a7e21a4e4974ae55e00024d">said</a> in a statement Saturday morning that it was “shocked and horrified” by the attack.
“We narrowly avoided a terrible loss of life. A dozen AP journalists and freelancers were inside the building and thankfully we were able to evacuate them in time,” AP president and CEO Gary Pruitt <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-middle-east-business-israel-palestinian-conflict-f595d0ea0a7e21a4e4974ae55e00024d">said</a>. “The world will know less about what is happening in Gaza because of what happened today.”
<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-west-bank-gaza-middle-east-israel-palestinian-conflict-7974cc0c03897b8b21e5fc2f8c7d8a79">According to the AP</a>, the IDF warned AP journalists and other residents of the building of the incoming attack roughly an hour before three Israeli missiles struck the tower, and no casualties from the attack have been reported.
In a Saturday press conference, IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus rejected labeling the al-Jalaa tower as a “media tower.”
“It’s not a media center,” he said. “It is a tower that was used by Hamas for three main purposes ... but out of consideration for the safety of civilians, noncombatants, of course journalists, enough time was given for these people to evacuate the building.”
Conricus did not provide proof to back the IDF’s claims about Hamas activity in the tower, however, citing “source security.”
In a tweet after the strike on Saturday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki <a href="https://twitter.com/PressSec/status/1393577210964058115?s=20">said</a> that the Biden administration had “communicated directly to the Israelis that ensuring the safety and security of journalists and independent media is a paramount responsibility.”
Al Jazeera journalists also <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/15/al-jazeera-strongly-condemns-israels-destruction-of-gaza-offices">condemned</a> the bureau’s destruction, and Al Jazeera acting director general Mostefa Souag described the attack as a “blatant violation of human rights” and a “war crime.”
“Whenever you see journalists doing live updates from Gaza, they’re usually standing on the roof of that building,” Al Jazeera English anchor Halla Mohieddeen <a href="https://twitter.com/swilsonnews/status/1393545932743061507?s=20">said</a> as the building was destroyed on air. “So that is a landmark, an institution that has now been razed to the ground in Gaza.”
The Saturday strike that destroyed Al Jazeera and AP bureau offices in Gaza isn’t the first time Israel’s military has targeted media buildings in the region. On Wednesday, the IDF destroyed what Washington Post Beirut bureau chief Liz Sly <a href="https://twitter.com/LizSly/status/1392507487195172864?s=20">described</a> on Twitter as “the main Gaza media building,” and the IDF has also made similar strikes in years past.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, a <a href="https://cpj.org/2021/05/israeli-air-strikes-destroy-buildings-housing-more-than-a-dozen-media-outlets-in-gaza/">pair of towers</a> destroyed by the IDF on Tuesday and Wednesday “house[d] more than a dozen international and local media outlets.”
In an article Thursday, Ignacio Miguel Delgado, a CPJ representative for the Middle East and North Africa, condemned the strikes as “utterly unacceptable ... especially since Israeli authorities know where those media outlets are housed.”
In 2019, the Gaza offices of the Anadolu Agency, a Turkish state media outlet, were <a href="https://cpj.org/2019/05/israeli-forces-destroy-gaza-office-of-turkish-anad/">destroyed</a> by Israel’s military, and in 2012, two other media buildings, housing British, German, and Saudi news outlets, were hit with “pinpoint strikes,” <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-palestinians-israel-journalists/gaza-journalists-wounded-by-israeli-attack-on-buildings-idUSBRE8AH0BL20121118">according to Reuters</a>.
As with Saturday’s strike, however, the IDF says those buildings were targeted because of a Hamas presence, and civilians were given a chance to evacuate.
“The building contained civilian media offices, which Hamas hides behind and deliberately uses as human shields,” the official IDF Twitter account <a href="https://twitter.com/IDF/status/1393565656621137920?s=20">said</a> Saturday of the destruction of al-Jalaa Tower.
“[Gaza] is an extremely difficult battlespace where Hamas, by their strategy, by design, do everything in order to embed their own military infrastructure within the civilian infrastructure,” Conricus told reporters. “Everything is mixed. There is no one clear military target.”

In a <a href="https://twitter.com/RobbieGramer/status/1393619948723970049?s=20">statement</a> Saturday, Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Bob Menendez (D-NJ) said that he was “deeply troubled” by the IDF strikes on media buildings.
“I also believe there must be a full accounting of actions that have led to civilian deaths and destruction of media outlets,” he said.
The airstrike that destroyed al-Jalaa Tower was just one of many targeting Gaza on Friday and Saturday as part of an IDF offensive against Hamas. Overnight, a <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/idf-overnight-bombardment-targeted-hamass-tunnel-network-under-gaza-city/">barrage</a> of Israeli airstrikes unleashed some 450 missiles — as well as artillery and tank shells from Israeli ground forces at the Gaza border — on a Hamas tunnel network in Gaza.
The airstrikes follow a deadly week of escalating clashes after tensions in Jerusalem boiled over on Monday with an Israeli <a href="https://www.vox.com/22430488/israel-gaza-war-2021-hamas-sheikh-jarrah">police raid</a> on the al-Aqsa Mosque and retaliatory rocket attacks by Hamas.
In addition to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Israel has also been wracked with unusual, internal violence between mobs of Jewish and Arab extremists, <a href="https://www.vox.com/world/2021/5/15/22436068/israel-violence-lod-bat-yam-jerusalem-lynching-arab-jewish-palestinian">as Vox’s Zack Beauchamp explained on Saturday</a>.
According to the IDF, the overnight airstrikes in Gaza “caused many kilometers of the [tunnel] infrastructure to collapse” and was “a psychological blow to Hamas and their leadership.”
However, there are questions about how the IDF may have attempted to manipulate international media as the attack on Gaza was beginning Friday.
Initially, many international news outlets, including the New York Times, reported that the IDF had launched a ground assault on Gaza after the IDF Twitter account <a href="https://twitter.com/IDF/status/1392953390443991040?s=20">tweeted</a> that “IDF air and ground troops are currently attacking in the Gaza Strip.”
An IDF incursion into Gaza would have marked a major escalation in the conflict. However, no such incursion occurred — and new reporting on Saturday suggests that the IDF may have deliberately misled media outlets in order to lure Hamas militants into a vulnerable position so they could be targeted by airstrikes.
<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/14/world/middleeast/israel-gaza-disinformation.html?action=click&module=Spotlight&pgtype=Homepage">According to the New York Times</a>, Israeli media described the mistaken reports in international news outlets as part of a “planned ploy” by the IDF, with one headline declaring that “this is how the tunnels became death traps for terrorists in Gaza.”
Conricus, the IDF spokesperson, denied misleading international media at a press conference on Saturday, and described the confusion as an “honest mistake.”
“We hold our relations with international media very dearly,” Conricus said. “We work hard to keep them as such ... unfortunately, mistakes happen.”
Palestinian casualties have also continued to mount as IDF airstrikes in Gaza intensify. At least 10 people, including eight children, were <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/15/at-least-ten-killed-in-insraeli-strike-on-gaza-refugee-camp">killed by Israeli missiles</a> in a Gaza refugee camp overnight, and more were wounded.
<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/15/at-least-ten-killed-in-insraeli-strike-on-gaza-refugee-camp">According to Al Jazeera</a>, the IDF said its forces are “not targeting civilians, but that fighters of Hamas, the group governing the Gaza Strip, have been hiding among them.”
However, a spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, rejected that explanation Friday.
“This is total disinformation, that Hamas [is] hiding in UN camps and that being the reason for striking ... extremely densely populated refugee camps,” UNRWA strategic communications director Tamara Alrifai <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/15/at-least-ten-killed-in-insraeli-strike-on-gaza-refugee-camp">told Al Jazeera</a>.
As of midday Saturday, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-west-bank-gaza-middle-east-israel-palestinian-conflict-7974cc0c03897b8b21e5fc2f8c7d8a79?ref=upstract.com&curator=upstract.com&utm_source=upstract.com">according to the AP</a>, at least 145 people have been killed in Gaza, including 41 children. Israel bombed the home of Hamas's chief in Gaza early on Sunday and the Islamist group fired rocket barrages at Tel Aviv as hostilities stretched into a seventh day with no sign of abating.
At least four Palestinians were killed in Israeli air strikes across the coastal enclave, health officials said, and many were injured as the sounds of heavy bombardment roared through the night.
Israelis dashed for bomb shelters as sirens warning of incoming rocket fire blared in Tel Aviv and the southern city of Beersheba. Around 10 people were injured while running for shelters, medics said.
At least 149 have been killed in Gaza since the violence began on Monday, including 41 children, health officials said. Israel has reported 10 dead, including two children.
Envoys from the United States, United Nations and Egypt were working to restore calm but have yet to show any signs of progress. The U.N. Security Council was due to meet later on Sunday to discuss the worst outbreak of Israeli-Palestinian violence in years.
Both Israel and Hamas have insisted they would continue their cross-border fire, a day after Israel destroyed a 12-storey building in Gaza City that had housed the U.S. Associated Press and Qatar-based Al Jazeera media operations.
The Israel military said the al-Jala building was a legitimate military target, containing Hamas military offices, and that it had given warnings to civilians to get out of the building before the attack.
The AP condemned the attack, and asked Israel to put forward evidence. "We have had no indication Hamas was in the building or active in the building," the news organisation said in a statement.
In what it called a reprisal for Israel's destruction of the al-Jala building, Hamas fired rockets at Tel Aviv and towns in southern Israel early on Sunday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late on Saturday that Israel was "still in the midst of this operation, it is still not over and this operation will continue as long as necessary."
In a burst of air strikes early on Sunday, Israel targeted the home of Yehya Al-Sinwar, who since 2017 has headed the political and military wings of Hamas in Gaza, the group's TV station said.
Another air strike killed a Gaza neurologist and wounded his wife and daughter, Palestinian medics and relatives said.

Hamas began its rocket assault on Monday after weeks of tensions over a court case to evict several Palestinian families in East Jerusalem, and in retaliation for Israeli police clashes with Palestinians near the city's Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest site, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking to crowds of protesters in the Qatari capital of Doha, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said late on Saturday that the underlying cause of the hostilities was Jerusalem.
"The Zionists thought ... they could demolish Al-Aqsa mosque. They thought they could displace our people in Sheikh Jarrah," said Haniyeh.
"I say to Netanyahu: do not play with fire," he continued, amid cheers from the crowd. "The title of this battle today, the title of the war, and the title of the intifada, is Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Jerusalem," using the Arabic word for 'uprising'.
Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other militant groups have fired around 2,300 rockets from Gaza since Monday, the Israeli military said on Saturday. It said about 1,000 were intercepted by missile defences and 380 fell into the Gaza Strip.
Israel has launched more than 1,000 air and artillery strikes into the densely populated coastal strip, saying they were aimed at Hamas and other militant targets.
WAR CRIMES
Earlier this week, the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, told Reuters the court was "monitoring very closely" the latest escalation of hostilities, amid an investigation now under way into alleged war crimes in earlier bouts of the conflict.
Netanyahu accused Hamas of "committing a double war crime" by targeting civilians, and using Palestinian civilians as "human shields."
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reminded "all sides that any indiscriminate targeting of civilian and media structures violates international law and must be avoided at all costs," U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Saturday.
There has been a flurry of U.S. diplomacy in recent days to try to quell the violence.
President Joe Biden's envoy, Hady Amr, arrived in Israel on Friday for talks. Biden spoke with both Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas late on Saturday, and updated them on U.S. diplomatic efforts, the White House said.
But any mediation is complicated by the fact that the United States and most western powers do not talk to Hamas, which they regard as a terrorist organisation. And Abbas, whose power base is in the occupied West Bank, exerts little influence over Hamas in Gaza.
In Israel, the conflict has been accompanied by violence amongst the country's mixed communities of Jews and Arabs, with synagogues attacked and Arab-owned shops vandalised.
There has also been an upsurge in deadly clashes in the occupied West Bank. At least 12 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank since Friday, most of them during clashes.

The US aviation regulator is ordering Boeing to inspect older generation 737 jets, after the January crash of an aircraft off Indonesia that killed 62 people.
All Boeing 737-300, -400 and -500 planes will need to be examined, a total of 143 aircraft, according to a document from the Federal Aviation Administration seen by AFP on Saturday.
A failure of the "flap synchro wire" missed by the autothrottle computer -- which manages the plane's thrust -- "could result in loss of control of the airplane," the document said.
An interim report from Indonesian investigators in February said the doomed jet's throttles showed an "anomaly," though it said the cause of the crash was unclear.
"The preliminary data of the ongoing accident investigation shows that it is highly unlikely that the accident resulted from the latent failure of the flap synchro wire," the FAA said.
But it said the inspection is "necessary to address the identified unsafe condition" that could be found in the planes, which were built in the 1980s and '90s.
More modern iterations of the Boeing 737 -- including the 737 MAX that was grounded for 20 months after two deadly crashes -- were not impacted by the inspection order.
"Boeing works to ensure that our airplanes are safe and meet all requirements. We are in constant communication with our customers and the FAA, and engaged in ongoing efforts to introduce safety and performance improvements across the fleet," the company said in a statement to AFP.
A Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 plunged about 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) in less than a minute before slamming into the Java Sea on January 9, minutes after taking off from Jakarta.
All 62 people aboard were killed.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was "dismayed" by civilian casualties in Gaza and "deeply disturbed" by Israel's strike on a building containing international media outlets, a spokesman said Saturday in response to reporters' questions.
The comments came as Israel pummeled the Gaza Strip with air strikes, killing 10 members of an extended family and demolishing the 13-floor Gaza building housing Qatar-based Al Jazeera and The Associated Press news agency, with Palestinian militants firing back barrages of rockets.
"The Secretary-General is dismayed by the increasing number of civilian casualties, including the death of ten members of the same family, including children, as a result of an Israeli airstrike last night in the al-Shati camp in Gaza, purportedly aimed at a Hamas leader," his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in the written response to questions on the Israeli air strikes in Gaza.
Guterres was "also deeply disturbed by the destruction by an Israeli airstrike today of a high-rise building in Gaza City that housed the offices of several international media organizations as well as residential apartments," Dujarric continued.
"The Secretary-General reminds all sides that any indiscriminate targeting of civilian and media structures violates international law and must be avoided at all costs," he said.
Israeli air and artillery strikes on Gaza since Monday have killed 145 people including 41 children, and wounded another 1,100, health officials say, the worst violence in the region since 2014.
Palestinian armed groups have fired at least 2,300 rockets at Israel, killing 10 people, including a child and a soldier, and wounding over 560 Israelis. Israeli air defenses have intercepted many rockets.
US Secretary for Israel-Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr was to hold talks Sunday with Israeli leaders before meeting Palestinian officials to seek a "sustainable calm," the State Department said.
The UN Security Council was to meet Sunday to discuss the violence.
