<p>The US Navy's Fifth Fleet said on Saturday that the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) seized an illicit shipment of weapons from a stateless dhow in international water of the North Arabian Sea on May 6-7.</p>
<p>"The cache of weapons included dozens of advanced Russian-made anti-tank guided missiles, thousands of Chinese Type 56 assault rifles, and hundreds of PKM machine guns, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades launchers. Other weapon components included advanced optical sights," the Bahrain-based Fleet said in a statement.</p>
<p>It added that the materiel is in US custody awaiting final disposition, while the original source and intended destination of the materiel is under investigation.</p>
<p>"After all illicit cargo was removed, the dhow was assessed for seaworthiness, and after questioning, its crew was provided food and water before being released," the statement said.</p>

<p>South Africa's health ministry on Saturday said four cases of a coronavirus variant fuelling a devastating surge of Covid-19 in India had been recorded in the country.</p>
<p>"The four cases of B.1.617.2 have been detected in (the provinces of) Gauteng (2) and KwaZulu-Natal (2) and all have a history of recent arrival from India," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement late Saturday.</p>
<p>Eleven cases of another variant first detected in the United Kingdom and known as B.1.1.7 have also been found, the statement added, noting that community transmission of that variant had "already set in".</p>
<p>South Africa is at least the fourth country on the continent to pick up the B.1.617.2 variant, alongside Kenya, Uganda and Morocco.</p>
<p>India is grappling with an explosive coronavirus outbreak widely attributed to the variant, which has now been found in more than a dozen countries worldwide.</p>
<p>South Africa has not yet joined the growing number of countries worldwide that have banned flights from India to limit the spread of its variant.</p>
<p>Mkhize said travel restrictions would "need to be balanced against scientific realities" to protect the economy of Africa's most industrialised nation.</p>
<p>An announcement will be made once the cabinet has consulted on the matter, he added.</p>
<p>South Africa is the continent's worst virus-hit country, accounting for more than 34 percent of all cases in the region.</p>
<p>The country's second coronavirus wave, which peaked earlier this year, was driven by a local, more infectious coronavirus variant known as B.1.351.</p>
<p>Mkhize earlier this week raised the alarm over "a worrying trend of increasing numbers of detected cases" in certain provinces.</p>
<p>He warned of a looming third wave of infections likely to coincide with the upcoming southern hemisphere winter.</p>
<p>To date, the country has recorded more than 1.59 million coronavirus cases, of which more than 54,700 have been fatal.</p>

<p>A shooting in New York's bustling Times Square has injured two women and a four-year-old girl, in an incident US authorities were still scrambling to understand, police said Saturday.</p>
<p>The incident took place just before 5:00 pm local time (9:00 pm GMT), at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 44th Street, a NYPD spokesperson told AFP.</p>
<p>The three victims were hospitalized in Manhattan, and their lives were not in danger, he added.</p>
<p>No arrests have yet been made, and police said the "investigation is still ongoing," without giving further details.</p>
<p>Times Square, one of New York's tourist hotspots before the pandemic, has changed since theaters all closed in March 2020.</p>
<p>According to a recent report by the Times Square Alliance, the neighborhood business association, the area recorded 25 violent crimes in the first quarter of 2021, up from 17 in the same period of 2020.</p>
<p>At the end of March, a video of an assault on an older woman of Asian descent shocked the neighborhood.</p>
<p>A man with a criminal record, who lived in a hotel near Times Square that had become a reception center for the homeless, was arrested and charged.</p>
<p>Neighborhood theaters are set to start reopening on September 14, however, and the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, recently announced a major campaign to revive tourism from June.</p>
<p>Shootings in New York have sharply increased since the summer of 2020 and the protests against the police violence that followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, official data show.</p>
<p>Crime in general was up 30 percent over the same period.</p>

<p>London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who won re-election Saturday, has risen from humble roots to spar with prime ministers and presidents since taking charge of the British capital five years ago.</p>
<p>The 50-year-old politician from the main opposition Labour party, a former human rights lawyer brought up on a London public housing complex, won a second stint at City Hall with victory over Conservative rival Shaun Bailey.</p>
<p>This continues a remarkable journey for the Pakistani immigrant bus driver's son, who became the first Muslim mayor of a Western capital when initially elected in 2016.</p>
<p>He has made a name for himself as a vocal critic of Brexit and successive Conservative prime ministers, including his mayoral predecessor Boris Johnson, as well as for a feud with former US president Donald Trump.</p>
<p>The pair became embroiled in an extraordinary war of words, after Khan criticised Trump's controversial travel ban on people from certain Muslim countries.</p>
<p>In a series of bizarre attacks, Trump accused Khan of doing a "very bad job on terrorism" and called him a "stone cold loser" and a "national disgrace".</p>
<p>The mayor in turn allowed an infamous blimp of Trump dressed as a baby in a nappy to fly above protests in Parliament Square during his 2018 visit to Britain.</p>
<p>"He once called me a stone cold loser. Only one of us is a loser, and it's not me," a typically combative Khan told AFP as he campaigned ahead of Thursday's poll.</p>
<p>Street fighter</p>
<p>Born in London in 1970 to parents who had recently arrived from Pakistan, Khan was the fifth child out of seven brothers and one sister.</p>
<p>He grew up in public housing in Tooting, an ethnically mixed residential area in south London, and slept in a bunkbed until he was 24.</p>
<p>His modest background plays well in a city that is proud of its diversity and loves a self-made success story.</p>
<p>In his victory speech on Saturday, Khan described himself as "a Londoner through and through".</p>
<p>"I grew up on a council estate, a working class boy, a child of immigrants, but I'm now the Mayor of London," he said.</p>
<p>Khan still regularly recalls how his father drove one of London's famous red buses, and his mother was a seamstress. One of his brothers is a motor mechanic.</p>
<p>He is a handy boxer, having learnt the sport to defend himself in the streets against those who hurled racist abuse at him, and two of his brothers are boxing coaches. He also ran the London Marathon in 2014.</p>
<p>At school, he wanted to study science and become a dentist. But a teacher spotted his gift for verbal sparring and directed him towards law.</p>
<p>He gained a law degree from the University of North London and started out as a trainee lawyer in 1994 at the Christian Fisher legal firm, where he was eventually made a partner.</p>
<p>He specialised in human rights, and spent three years chairing the civil liberties campaign group Liberty.</p>
<p>He represented Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam movement, and Babar Ahmad, a mosque acquaintance who was jailed in the United States after admitting providing support to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.</p>
<p>Muslim PM?</p>
<p>Khan joined Labour aged 15 when Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher was in her pomp.</p>
<p>He became a local councillor for Tooting in the Conservative-dominated Wandsworth local borough in 1994, and its member of parliament in 2005.</p>
<p>He still lives in the area with his lawyer wife Saadiya and their two teenage daughters.</p>
