Paris:
Taking anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen does not increase the risk of developing a severe form of Covid-19 or of dying from it, according to a new study, the largest so far on this class of medicines.
At the start of the coronavirus pandemic there was concern over the potential effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are used to treat everything from minor pain to chronic arthritis and cardiovascular disease.
But observational research published Saturday in the medical journal Lancet Rheumatology, based on 72,000 hospitalised patients, found that the drugs "do not increase the mortality or severity" of Covid-19.
The authors recommended that doctors should continue to prescribe NSAIDs as they have in the past.
"When the pandemic began over a year ago, we needed to be sure that these common medications would not lead to worse outcomes in people with Covid-19," lead author Ewen Harrison, a professor at the University of Edinburgh, said in a press release.
"We now have clear evidence that NSAIDs are safe to use in patients with Covid-19, which should provide reassurance to both clinicians and patients that they can continue to be used in the same way as before the pandemic began."
The NSAID family of anti-inflammatory drugs includes those widely used by the general public like ibuprofen -- an active substance in common drugs, such as Nurofen or Advil -- or ketoprofen.
Death rates the same
Concerns over the drugs emerged at the start of the Covid pandemic and centred on suspicions that they can worsen infections, especially bacterial.
In March 2020, for example, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that people suffering Covid-19 symptoms avoid self-medicating with ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.
The new research examined data on 72,000 Covid patients admitted to 255 health centres in England, Scotland and Wales between January and August 2020.
Of these, 4,211 had taken NSAIDs before hospitalisation.
The study found that the proportion of death was similar regardless of whether patients had taken the drugs or not -- 30.4 percent for those who had and 31.3 percent for those who had not.
It also found that those who took NSAIDs were "no more likely to be admitted to critical care, need invasive or non-invasive ventilation, or require oxygen".
There were some limitations to the research, however, including that in the UK ibuprofen is the most commonly used NSAID, so it is unclear whether the results could be as applicable to other countries where different NSAIDs are used.
They also did not know how long patients had taken the drugs and whether they were taking them for a serious chronic condition or temporary symptoms.

The new coronavirus will no longer be circulating in Britain by August, the government's departing vaccine taskforce chief Clive Dix told the Daily Telegraph on Friday.
"Sometime in August, we will have no circulating virus in the UK", Dix said, adding that he believed the vaccine booster programme could be pushed back to early 2022.
The government is looking at which COVID-19 vaccines would offer the best booster shot for vulnerable people later this year.
Dix told the Telegraph that he expects everybody in the UK to have been vaccinated at least once by the end of July, by which time "we'll have probably protected the population from all the variants that are known."
The UK has administered over 51 million vaccines and has been the second quickest country to give a first dose to at least half its adult population.
British officials said people under 40 should be offered an alternative to Oxford/AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine where possible due to a small risk of blood clots.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI)said the advice reflected low levels of coronavirus infection in Britain and the availability of other vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna.
Dix, who was appointed as interim leader of the task force in December, stepped down from his role last week.

The WHO chief on Friday implored the G7 to prioritise equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines around the globe, branding the current imbalance morally inadmissible.
World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the uneven distribution of vaccines among rich and poor nations would not help to end the coronavirus pandemic.
"For the G7 now, the most important and the immediate support we need is vaccines, and vaccine equity," he told a press conference.
Nearly 1.25 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been injected in at least 210 territories around the world, according to an AFP count.
Some 45 percent of the doses have been administered in high-income countries accounting for 16 percent of the global population.
Just 0.3 percent have been administered in the 29 lowest-income countries, home to nine percent of the world's population.
"This kind of divide is unacceptable," Tedros said.
"Not because of just a moral issue, but it's unacceptable because we will not defeat the virus in a divided world."
The Group of Seven industrial powers are holding a summit on June 11-13 in Cornwall, southwest England, hosted by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The WHO says the G7 has the ability to fund the vaccines, tests and treatments needed to conquer the pandemic -- and knock down the barriers blocking faster production.
"It's in every country's interest in this world to share vaccines, and to help in any way possible," said Tedros.
The WHO's Access to Covid-19 Tools Accelerator programme for finding, developing and distributing coronavirus jabs, tests and therapeutics, is $19 billion short of its $22-billion target this year.
And a further $35 to $45 billion will be needed next year to ensure most adults around the world are immunised.
Tedros wants the G7 countries -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States -- to dig deep to help find solutions.
'Massive force of infection'
Around the world, the number of new Covid-19 has increased for the ninth straight week, and deaths have increased for the sixth straight week.
More cases have been reported in the past two weeks than during the first six months of the pandemic, as the pandemic rages in India.
"We're deeply concerned that many more countries will continue to be affected. We will see serious situations like what we see now in India, Brazil, Nepal and other countries," said Tedros.
WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan said he was troubled by the surge in virus transmission, as witnessed in India.
"My concern right now is that this virus has huge kinetic energy in some countries. It's got a massive force of infection," he said.
"It is being driven by human behaviour, by the emergence of variants, and many other factors.
"We're expecting the virus to slow down and we're pushing the accelerators! We have got to stop."
He said the huge spikes in infection were being pushed by proximity and mixing of people without protection, in poorly-ventilated spaces.
"I know how hard that is in the context of some countries but that is the brutal reality," said Ryan.
"We've seen the tragedy in India; we need to avoid that same tragedy occurring in other countries -- and some other countries are heading in that direction."

The US, which has urged its citizens not to travel to India due to an unprecedented surge in the COVID-19 cases there, on Friday encouraged those in the country to book their tickets to return home through currently available flights.
The United Airlines and Air India are continuing to operate numerous direct flights weekly from India to the US, a State Department health alert said.
Additional flight options remain available on Air France, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways via transfers in Paris, Frankfurt, and Doha.
US citizens who wish to depart India are encouraged to book tickets through the airlines, the health alert said.
It is mandatory for anyone travelling to the US (2 years and older) to take a COVID-19 test no more than 3 days before travel and show a negative result to the airline before boarding the flight, it said.
The passengers should be prepared to show documentation of recovery from COVID-19 (proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from a healthcare provider or a public health official stating clearance for travel).
Travellers are encouraged to follow post-travel guidance once in the US, it said.
The US this week reissued its travel advisory on India, urging its citizens not to travel to the country due to an unprecedented surge in the COVID-19 cases there.
"Do not travel to India due to COVID-19. Exercise increased caution due to crime and terrorism," the State Department said on Wednesday in its latest travel advisory that looked identical to the one issued on April 28.
Both the travel advisories have been marked ''Level 4'' which is the highest warning level.
On April 28, the Department approved the voluntary departure of family members of US government employees.
On May 5, the Department approved the voluntary departure of non-emergency US government employees.
"US citizens who wish to depart India should take advantage of available commercial transportation options," it said.
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for India due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken took a veiled swipe at Russia and China on Friday during a U.N. Security Council meeting chaired by his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, warning that the actions of some big powers portrays impunity to others.
The meeting on multilateralism, convened by China as council president for May, comes amid a U.N. battle for influence between the world's two biggest economies as President Joe Biden seeks to reassert traditional U.S. leadership - reversing former President Donald Trump's favored unilateral approach - in the face of a more assertive Beijing.
Blinken stressed the need for countries to uphold international commitments, focus on human rights and respect for the principle of sovereign equality.
"When U.N. member states - particularly permanent members of the Security Council - flout these rules and block attempts to hold accountable those who violate international law, it sends the message that others can break those rules with impunity," he said.
Russia, China, the United States, France and Britain are the permanent, veto-wielding powers of the 15-member council.
The United States has accused China of genocide by repressing Uighur Muslims in detention centers in its Xinjiang region. China denies accusations of abuse and says it is trying to stamp out extremism.
"Asserting domestic jurisdiction doesn't give any state a blank check to enslave, torture, disappear, ethnically cleanse their people, or violate their human rights in any other way," Blinken said.
While Blinken did not name Russia or China, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov bluntly criticized a U.S. plan to hold a summit on global democracy as "creating a new special interests club on an openly ideologized basis" that "could further exacerbate international tension and draw dividing lines in a world which needs a unifying agenda now more than ever."
Moscow and Washington have long differed over a range of issues, but ties have slumped further after Biden said he believed President Vladimir Putin was "a killer". Washington has also imposed sanctions over accusations Moscow interfered in the 2020 U.S. election, cyber hacking and "bullying" Ukraine.
China and Russia were both critical of unilateral sanctions with Wang describing them as "illegitimate".
Blinken, Wang and Lavrov did agree the world needed to work together to address climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Islamic terrorists in Egypt captured and murdered an elderly Christian man named Nabil Habashi Salama who lived in North Sinai. Just recently Egyptian security forces killed three of the terrorists involved.
