Brussels:
The European Union and India will agree to restart long-stalled trade talks at a leaders' summit on Saturday, an EU official said, as tensions with China spur closer cooperation.
"After almost eight years of the suspension of the free trade talks, we will agree to resume these," a senior EU official told journalists on Thursday in a briefing ahead of the summit.
"This opens up the way to a possible free trade agreement between us."
Momentum has been growing for closer ties between Europe's 27-nation bloc and the world's largest democracy in the face of the rising might of Beijing.
Trade talks between the two sides were halted in 2013 after getting stuck on issues including cutting tariffs and access for Indian workers to Europe.
The EU official said Brussels was hoping to reach "an ambitious, comprehensive and also mutually beneficial agreement" with India -- but it remains to be seen if New Delhi will ease up on its traditionally protectionist approach.
"We believe that this is one of the areas of cooperation between EU and India where the potential gain, both economically but also strategically, is the greatest," the EU official said.
The bloc's push to resume negotiations comes at a time former EU member Britain is also making a play to bolster its trade ties with India, as London seeks to carve out its new role.
The British government said Tuesday it would start formal free talks with India late this year after the two sides agreed an initial package to boost bilateral trade and investment.

The Pentagon said it expects a tumbling Chinese rocket to fall out of orbit and re-enter the Earth's atmosphere on Saturday, though officials say it's too early to predict where any debris will land.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is being briefed regularly about the trajectory of the Long March 5B rocket core, which successfully put a portion of China's first space station into orbit last month, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Wednesday. Yet while the rocket is being monitored by U.S. Space Command, Kirby said there's little the military can do about it at this point.
"We don't have enough fidelity of information right now about re-entry and what that is going to look like to speak to specific actions one way or another," Kirby said. "We're just too far out right now to begin to speculate about what possibly could be in the offing here."
The military's 18th Space Control Squadron started posting daily updates on the rocket's location on www.space-track.org this week.
China is ready to work with other countries on safety issues related to space, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular briefing Thursday in Beijing when asked about the rocket.
Unlike most first-stage launch vehicles, which typically send their payloads into orbit and immediately fall back to Earth in a pre-planned area, the Chinese rocket carrying the space station module also went into orbit and some analysts think it is now tumbling.
The problem of space debris has been escalating as nations and private companies accelerate the deployment of miniature and low-Earth satellites. In most cases, satellites and space debris that re-enter the atmosphere tend to burn up before striking Earth or are directed so they crash in the ocean, far from land.
But not always.
America's first space station, Space Lab, re-entered the atmosphere in July 1979, with some pieces falling into Western Australia. No one was hurt.
China drew criticism from then-NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine last year when debris from another Long March 5B rocket re-entered the atmosphere. Citing local reports, SpaceNews said at the time that pieces of debris as long as 12 meters (39 feet) landed in Cote d'Ivoire.
Asked about the Long March's re-entry on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the U.S. wants to work with other space-faring nations to promote "responsible space behaviors."
"It's in the shared interests of all nations to act responsibly in space, to ensure the safety, stability, security and long term sustainability of outer space activities," Psaki said. "We're going to work with our international partners on that, and certainly addressing this is -- is something we'll do through those channels."

The resumption of student visa applications at U.S. missions in China got off to an acrimonious start this week when netizens took exception to an American embassy social media post they interpreted as likening Chinese students to dogs.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, whose time in office was marked by tense relations in Beijing, had in January last year barred nearly all non-U.S. citizens who were in China from entering the United States after the coronavirus outbreak.
On the Twitter-like Weibo service on Wednesday, the visa section of the U.S. embassy in China asked students what they were waiting for after the Biden administration eased restrictions.
"Spring has come and the flowers are in bloom. Are you like this dog who can't wait to go out and play?" said the post in Chinese, which was accompanied by a video of an excited puppy trying to climb over a safety gate.
The post drew an angry backlash from some Weibo users, however, who felt the comparison was inappropriate, and was later deleted.
"Is this American humour? I believe they did it on purpose!" one user wrote.
"Dogs in American culture basically have positive meanings, but in Chinese culture and idioms, they are mostly negative," wrote another user. Others quipped that the students' "master" was now calling them back to the United States.
The Global Times, an English-language tabloid run by the Chinese Communist Party's People's Daily, also cited netizens as saying that the post was "blatant racism".
A U.S. embassy spokesman in Beijing issued an apology on Thursday morning to anyone who had been offended by the comments.
"The social media post in question was meant to be light-hearted and humorous," he said. "We took it down immediately when we saw it was not received in the spirit we intended."
It is not the first time animal-related remarks have sparked a backlash in China. In 2019, a senior economist from UBS was placed on leave after comments about pigs in China were perceived by some as a racial slur. He was later reinstated.

Australia on Thursday described China's decision to freeze regular bilateral trade talks as "disappointing," but insisted Canberra was still willing to talk despite ties reaching a new low.
Trade Minister Dan Tehan said the now-suspended China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue provided an "important forum" for the two countries "to work through issues", but noted no such talks had taken place since 2017. China earlier said it had suspended the agreement as relations between the two sides have collapsed into acrimony.

Participants were <a href="https://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/lifestyle/coronavirus/49_say_keep_wearing_masks_even_after_covid_19_vaccination">asked</a>, “How much longer will Americans be required to wear masks in public places? Less than six months, Six months to a year, At least 18 months, For the next couple of years, or Indefinitely?”
58 per cent said they think they’ll be required to wear masks in public for at least another six months, while 25 per cent of that figure believes the mandates will go on for 18 months or longer.
49 per cent of respondents also said that even those who are vaccinated should still wear masks.
Many believe that mask mandates will linger for significantly longer despite also being confident that the U.S. is winning the war on the virus.
Half of respondents said that this was the case compared to 26 per cent who are pessimistic about the spread of COVID ending any time soon.
As the video below illustrates, Americans have been brainwashed to such an extent that even the widespread uptake of the vaccine hasn’t changed their view that the masks should remain on.

A survey by research firm Kekst CNC released last summer <a href="https://summit.news/2020/08/05/survey-americans-think-coronavirus-has-killed-30-million-people-in-the-u-s-225-times-higher-than-actual-figure/">found</a> that on average, people in the U.S. thought 9 per cent of the population, around 30 million people, had died from coronavirus when the actual figure at the time was less than 155,000.
This meant that Americans thought COVID-19 had filled 225 times more victims than the actual number of fatalities.
Data out of Texas, Florida and South Dakota <a href="https://summit.news/2021/03/29/2-weeks-after-media-predicted-catastrophe-texas-sees-covid-cases-drop-to-record-low/">shows</a> that after mask mandates ended, COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths dropped off rapidly, while remaining significantly higher in blue states with draconian mask mandates.
Masks have also undoubtedly become a tool of virtue signaling used by narcissists to broadcast the fact they’re “good people” while also acting as a conduit for the attempt to signal high-value consensus status.
As we <a href="https://summit.news/2021/04/26/health-experts-encourage-cdc-to-implement-permanent-mask-mandates/">highlighted</a> last month, despite signs that the coronavirus pandemic is coming to an end, health experts are still insisting that mask mandates remain for the foreseeable future.
Lecturer Dr. David Thunder Ph.D <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/04/lecturer-warns-lockdown-restrictions-will-return-whenever-theres-a-harsh-flu-season/">warns</a> that this is part of the conditioning process whereby governments will re-introduce lockdown measures at the drop of a hat under the justification of responding to a harsh flu season.
“This nightmare will not be over until citizens push back and say enough is enough,” said Thunder.
