Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin are the last holdouts against removing the filibuster. If both of them fall, national gun control legislation will start flowing faster than gaffes from our so-called president. <a href="https://www.gunowners.org/">Gun Owners of America</a> is fighting back on multiple fronts. For complete transparency, I have supported and adored GOA for years, viewing them as the most effective fighters against those who would try to limit our right to keep and bear arms. This is why it's not surprising that my interview with New Hampshire GOA director Alan Rice was so fawning. I put my journalistic side down to let him spill the beans on what needs to be done going forward. Before getting to my discussion with Rice, we have a story out of Texas that exemplifies exactly what we need more of in America. According to <a href="https://justthenews.com/government/state-houses/texas-bill-allowing-permit-less-hand-gun-carrying-public-preliminarily">Just The News</a>: A piece of legislation that would allow Lone Star State handgun owners to carry their weapons in public without a permit was preliminarily passed in the Texas House on Thursday in an 84-56 vote, though it is anticipated that final passage out of the chamber will occur on Friday. The legislation would also need to clear the state Senate before it would be heading to the governor's desk. "This bill should be called common sense carry because this bill is about common law-abiding citizens being able to carry commonly owned handguns in common public places for the common reason of personal and family protection. Under this bill, people who are prohibited from possessing a handgun will still be prohibited of possessing a handgun. Sensitive places where the unlicensed carry of a handgun is prohibited will still be prohibited. But if you are a law-abiding citizen age 21 or older that can legally possess a handgun you will be able to carry that handgun in a holster in public places where it is not otherwise prohibited," Republican state Rep. Matt Schaefer said, <a href="https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/politics/texas-politics/texas-house-debates-permitless-carry/2607021/">NBCDFW.com</a> reported. Common sense. The plain reading of the language within the Second Amendment combined with laws of the land that already exist tell us that we don't need more gun laws. We need better enforcement of current laws and we need a focus on getting guns out of the hands of criminals, not law-abiding citizens. This is the epitome of common sense, but unfortunately the party in charge in Washington DC is lacking. We can fight back, as Alan told us in the interview. According to him, the problem starts at the top. "Joe Biden has been in public office for close to 50 years," he said. "Joe Biden has hated guns for close to 50 years. He likes to brag about the 1994 crime bill. The crime bill was a crime bill… it was a crime." One of the things Biden and the Democrats are going after is the so-called "ghost gun." These are firearms lawfully made by private citizens for personal use. The left came up with the scary phrase to categorize them because supposedly they are the scourge that will take down our nation at any moment. What they don't tell you is that homemade firearms are in the very DNA of our nation. "People have been allowed to build their own firearms in their garages and basements and barns since before America was a republic," he said. "It's a very American thing to do to make your own gun. In the 21st century, people buy a hunk of aluminum or a hunk of plastic and they drill some holes, cut some slots, remove some material to make that hunk of aluminum or plastic into a firearm. The hunks of aluminum or plastic that they're buying is not a firearm. The ATF has said it's not a firearm. Now he wants to reverse close to 30-years of ATF opinions that I'm aware of." But ghost guns are not the only types of firearms in the Democrats' sights. They're looking at types of ammunition, rifles, magazines, and accessories to label in ways that make them illegal for some or all. Nearly everything they're proposing runs contrary to our rights that are ensured by the Second Amendment. The event that can make all of this happen is the removal of the filibuster. Gun Owners of America are focused on preventing the flurry of gun laws that would surely happen if the filibuster is removed. Their focus is on keeping the pressure up on Manchin and Sinema. "Senator Manchin from West Virginia is on record that he won't vote to do away with the filibuster," he said. "We take him at his word. We believe he's being truthful, but we're asking our members in West Virginia to remind him of what he said. Senator Sinema from Arizona has now made similar comments, so we're asking our members in Arizona to remind Senator Sinema what she said." There are a couple of other Democratic Senators who aren't necessarily on the radar on the filibuster but who GOA believes can also be pressured into opposing its removal. "My Senator, Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire is up for reelection next year, and in 2017 when she was in the minority party was against getting rid of the filibuster, so we're asking New Hampshire gun owners to remind Senator Hassan what she said," he said. "And the last one is Senator Hester from Montana. Same story." We can look at this as a national issue, but as Rice highlighted, it's the grassroots efforts at the state and local effort that can really make a difference. We have to be talking to our state legislators as well as those on Capitol Hill who represent us in DC. They work for us, not the other way around. By focusing our personal efforts locally and working with Gun Owners of America to fight the national battle, we can prevent government from overstepping into our rights as American citizens. The first thing to go if the filibuster falls will be the Second Amendment. It will be reinterpreted to be limiting instead of the blanket protection it was intended to be by our founders. The lies associated with Covid-19 are only slightly more prevalent than the suppression of valid scientific information that runs counter to the prescribed narrative. We should be allowed to ask questions about the vaccines, for example, as there is ample evidence for concern. One does not have to be an "anti-vaxxer" in order to want answers about vaccines that are still considered experimental and that have a track record in a short period of time of having side-effects. These questions are not allowed on Big Tech which is just another reason we are getting cancelled. There are more topics that they refuse to allow. In turn, we refuse to stop discussing them. Andrew Cuomo and Google’s former CEO push to cap internet prices for low-income New Yorkers

At the beginning of the pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/5/6/21249410/coronavirus-andrew-cuomo-bill-gates-eric-schmidt-tech-billionaires">tapped former Google CEO Eric Schmidt</a> to help him pivot New York to the digital age.
A year later, Cuomo and Schmidt have unveiled the first major change to state policy: A new law signed Friday to expand internet access to low-income New Yorkers.
Cuomo took the recommendation from Schmidt’s reform commission, Reimagine New York, and signed a bill that requires internet providers like Verizon to offer lower-income families basic broadband access for no more than $15 a month, a cap that Cuomo says is the first of its kind in the nation. High-speed plans will be capped at $20 a month.
About 7 million New Yorkers who currently qualify for government assistance will now have access to cheaper internet — a high-speed plan typically costs an average of more than $50 a month, Cuomo said — making it easier for them to attend online classes, communicate with family, and work from home. <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/12/23/22196354/stimulus-bill-broadband-internet">Americans who lack broadband access</a> are disproportionately low-income and people of color.
“The internet is no longer optional,” Schmidt said on Friday, seated alongside Cuomo. “It’s essential to education. Think of the generation that we could be creating that are not learning because we didn’t give them the right access — and they’re the ones most at risk that need it most of all.”
The law is the most significant accomplishment to date from the Schmidt-led commission. The former Google CEO said from the beginning that the group would have three priorities: expanding broadband access, building out more capabilities for virtual medical appointments, and improving remote learning.
Schmidt is a billionaire philanthropist who splits his time among technical issues like artificial intelligence, <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/5/27/21271157/tech-billionaires-joe-biden-reid-hoffman-laurene-powell-jobs-dustin-moskovitz-eric-schmidt">political issues like Democratic campaigns</a>, and the intersection of those tech and policy interests — such as ways to bridge the gap between Silicon Valley’s engineering talent and the American military.
<a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/5/6/21249410/coronavirus-andrew-cuomo-bill-gates-eric-schmidt-tech-billionaires">Some New York progressives were upset</a> when Schmidt — along with another major tech philanthropist, Bill Gates — were chosen to help guide New York’s post-coronavirus recovery, fearing it would expand the private sector’s influence. A longtime political ally of Cuomo, Schmidt praised the “extraordinary” coronavirus leadership of the New York governor, who is managing several crises, including an <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/andrew-cuomo-nursing-home-deaths.html">FBI investigation</a> over whether he covered up the total number of Covid-19 deaths at nursing homes. Cuomo is also facing <a href="https://www.vox.com/22307751/governor-andrew-cuomo-sexual-harassment-allegations-democrats-investigation">unrelated sexual harassment allegations</a>.
In addition to the new state law, Schmidt’s philanthropic group, Schmidt Futures, is also helping to finance internet access for the next school year for up to 50,000 New York families that cannot afford the reduced $15-a-month rate. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers “apparently had no internet access at all,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt portrayed the commission as epitomizing the best of philanthropy and how it can collaborate with the public sector during a crisis.
“This is when New York does its best — a combination of private actors and the public doing the right thing for the benefit of all the citizens,” Schmidt said. “Governor, send us more challenges.”

Biden’s blunt opposition to marijuana legalization

This month, something unusual happened: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer took a stand against President Joe Biden.
The New York Democrat, typically a strong Biden ally, has transformed into one of the Senate’s biggest advocates for marijuana legalization, which Biden <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-d/">continues to oppose</a>. But Schumer said he’ll move forward with his legalization bill anyway.
“I want to make my arguments to him, as many other advocates will,” Schumer <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-h/">said</a>. “But at some point we’re going to move forward, period.”
Schumer is likely worried, at least in part, about a primary challenge from the left in the future — something Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-k/">has openly discussed</a>.
But there’s a bigger issue here for Biden. Increasingly, the president is out of step with not just his party but the country and perhaps even most Republicans on marijuana legalization.
Marijuana legalization is extremely popular. <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-u/">Gallup</a> and the <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-o/">Pew Research Center</a>, two of the country’s leading polling organizations, have consistently found at least two-thirds of Americans back legalization.
Support is so high that, at this point, a majority of Republicans — who are generally more skeptical of drug policy reforms — may support it. Pew found 55 percent of Republicans back legalization. Gallup found a slim majority of Republicans supported it in 2017, 2018, and 2019. That reversed in 2020, but the difference between support and opposition among Republicans was still within the sampling margin of error. And, at any rate, a solid minority of 48 percent were behind it.
Support among Democrats, meanwhile, is in the high 70s and 80s across polls.
Maybe Biden doesn’t entirely trust the polls — after 2016 and 2020, many of us don’t. But there’s real-world evidence legalization is very popular, too.
For one, 17 states have now legalized marijuana, most recently <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-b/">New Mexico</a>. Among the 15 states where marijuana legalization has been put in front of voters since 2012 (when Colorado and Washington state first legalized), it’s won in 13.
Even more impressive is marijuana’s recent record in Republican states. Since 2012, marijuana legalization has come up for a vote in four states that former President Donald Trump won by double digits in 2020. It’s won in three of those states (Alaska, Montana, and South Dakota), and lost in one (North Dakota). Weed is 3-1 in deep-red states.
So what could explain Biden’s opposition? Based on his public remarks, he seems genuinely conservative on the issue — <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-n/">arguing</a> only for decriminalization (in which the threat of jail or prison time is removed for possession, but sales remain illegal), and calling for “more scientific investigations” into the issue, particularly whether pot is a “<a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-p/">gateway drug</a>.”
Biden, after all, <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-x/">not just supported but spearheaded</a> many of the country’s current drug war policies. During the 1980s and ’90s, he backed and helped write bill after bill that toughened federal criminal penalties against all sorts of drugs. Biden has since <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-m/">admitted</a> to going too far in at least some respects, but this is where he built his early political career.
Of course, the failure of these policies to stop major drug problems — the country is currently mired in its deadliest drug overdose crisis ever in the opioid epidemic — and these policies’ punitive nature are reasons the public has shifted toward backing marijuana legalization. And the real-life evidence of legalization suggests it works fine, even leading governors in legalization states to <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-c/">regularly</a> <a href="https://voxcom.cmail19.com/t/d-l-qtjlrll-ssiuphk-f/">flip</a> to supporting it.
But Biden is not convinced, even as his party moves ahead without him. With a veto pen in hand, it could make the president the biggest barrier to legalization.

Breaking down the 2021 Best Picture nominees

The most prestigious award at the <a href="https://www.vox.com/oscars">Oscars</a> is the Best Picture trophy, and every year, between five and 10 movies compete for the prize. What makes the contest interesting is that there aren’t any set rules about what constitutes a “best” picture. It’s just the movie (for better or worse, depending on the year) that Hollywood designates as its standard-bearer.
The film that wins represents the American movie industry’s view of its accomplishments in the present and its aspirations for the future.
In this strange, strange year — with a pandemic wreaking havoc on the film industry and big questions looming about the future of theaters and streaming — it is perhaps surprising that the eight <a href="https://www.vox.com/22331513/best-picture-oscars-2021-nominees-streaming">2021 Best Picture nominees</a>, on the whole, are pretty great.
The <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/12/4/22150234/mank-review-netflix-fincher">most-nominated film overall</a> is about the politics, business, and history of Hollywood — no surprise, since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the professional organization that gives out the Oscars) tends to love movies about movies. Two films center on characters who are struggling to retain part of themselves in the midst of <a href="https://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-father">memory loss</a> and <a href="https://www.metacritic.com/movie/sound-of-metal">hearing loss</a>, respectively.
Two more films explore the politics and activism of the late 1960s, <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/21515051/trial-of-the-chicago-7-review-sorkin-netflix">one focusing on a court case</a> and <a href="https://www.vox.com/22272309/judas-black-messiah-review-hbo-max-black-panthers-kaluuya-stanfield">one on a state-sanctioned assassination</a>. There’s a <a href="https://www.vox.com/22205072/promising-young-woman-review-carey-mulligan">biting and satirical revenge thriller</a> in the mix. And finally, two films explore the promise and peril of the American Dream: one about <a href="https://www.vox.com/22274856/minari-review-yeun-chung">a family of Korean-Americans in 1980s Missouri</a>, and <a href="https://www.vox.com/22289457/nomadland-review-zhao-mcdormand-streaming-hulu">one set in the contemporary West</a>.

What the cicadas will leave behind

Next month, billions of cicadas will erupt from the earth across parts of the eastern US, crawl up trees, shed their skin, and begin a loud hunt for mates.
These particular insects are part of a group known as <a href="https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/22362042/cicada-brood-x-map-2021">Brood X</a> that emerges once every 17 years. And when they do, the lacy-winged critters hang around for two to four weeks before dying, assuming they don’t get nabbed by birds, pet dogs, or a <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna18871431">hungry zoo animal</a> first.
But while their lives in the sun may be just a noisy blip, the members of Brood X will certainly leave a mark on forests from Tennessee to New York.
As researchers are learning, an eruption of periodical cicadas can send ripples throughout the ecosystem that alter the population dynamics of predators like birds and perhaps even fuel the growth of plants and trees. And, remarkably, some of those effects seem to last for years.

For most of their lives — either 13 or 17 years, depending on the type — periodical cicadas are out of sight, residing underground and slurping up fluid from tree roots. Then, when the soil temperature hits about <a href="https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/22362042/cicada-brood-x-map-2021">64 degrees</a>, they emerge by the billions, just like that.
This mass eruption, scientists believe, is strategic.
“They effectively satiate their predators,” said Louie Yang, an entomologist at the University of California Davis who’s studied cicada ecology for years.
In other words, their defense strategy is to flood the forests so that predators, from blue jays to squirrels (and, during these eruptions, everything in between), become so full that they literally can’t stomach another bite. That leaves plenty of insects to mate and lay eggs that will become the next generation of 17-year cicadas.
This approach seems to work for cicadas, and it certainly satisfies birds.
In the animal kingdom, a full stomach is a big deal. With more food, you often see more babies — even, apparently, if the supply only lasts a few weeks.
“Following [cicada] emergences, you do tend to get an increase in a lot of the apparent avian predator populations,” said Walt Koenig, an ornithologist at Cornell University and research zoologist emeritus at UC Berkeley.
<a href="https://escholarship.org/content/qt8wx127fg/qt8wx127fg.pdf">One analysis</a>, co-authored by Koenig and based on 37 years of population data for 24 predatory birds, found that cicada eruptions “significantly influenced” almost two-thirds of them. Eight species, such as the redheaded woodpecker and common grackle, saw a population bump of 10 percent, on average, following the brood emergences — “presumably attributable to high survivorship or reproductive success.”
(The number of some other species actually fell, likely because those particular birds left the scene after filling up on cicadas, resulting in lower counts.)
Most interestingly, many of these knock-on effects lasted for years, Koenig said. The number of blue jays, for example, was significantly higher even three years after the cicada eruptions.
“These results indicate that, at least in some species, the effects of cicada emergences are detectable years after the event itself,” the authors wrote.
It wasn’t a huge surprise to Koenig that some birds benefit from cicada eruptions. But he did find something in the data that really caught his attention: Fewer birds overall tend to be around when — and where — cicadas emerge. “Bird populations are recorded as being relatively low during emergences,” he said.
That’s surprising, he added, because “you’d expect birds to really home in on these things.”
Koenig’s quest to explain this hasn’t yet turned up anything conclusive. The most intriguing theory, he says, is that cicadas have somehow influenced bird populations over centuries of evolution so there are fewer predators when they emerge. “It is possible,” he said.
The vast majority of cicadas are able to evade predators like birds and the occasional dog. They go on to mate, lay eggs, and eventually fall, as prickly carcasses, to the forest floor.
There they become a natural fertilizer, and it’s laid on thick. As Yang’s research suggests, a cicada burst can increase the biomass of microbes and the availability of nitrogen, an important nutrient for plants, in the soil.
Yang ran one experiment where he fertilized American bellflowers, a common understory plant, with dead cicadas, and found that the plants grew larger, produced bigger seeds, and had higher concentrations of nitrogen in their leaves. (He also found that they were more desirable to plant-eating mammals and insects.)

It’s much harder to prove the impacts of cicadas on trees. One <a href="https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/ecy.2705">three-year experimental study</a> Yang co-authored, however, found “that cicada fertilization strongly increased tree growth in the year of emergence,” and those changes persisted even two years later.
“The biggest effect to growth was in the first year, but the difference that [the fertilization] caused was maintained throughout three years,” Yang said.
Other <a href="https://bioone.org/journals/The-American-Midland-Naturalist/volume-164/issue-2/0003-0031-164.2.173/The-Effect-of-Periodical-Cicadas-on-Growth-of-Five-Tree/10.1674/0003-0031-164.2.173.short">observational studies</a> that rely on correlation support the idea that dead cicadas fertilize the forest floor and might increase the size of trees years later as a result, though in general, they tend to show mixed results.
In short, no. Some researchers argue that, if anything, periodical cicadas actually negatively impact trees.
It’s easy to forget that periodical cicadas are there, in the soil, all the time. For years, they’re parasitizing trees — sucking nutrients from their roots (specifically, something called xylem fluid), which those trees could otherwise use to grow. When they emerge, the cicadas lay eggs in twigs, causing the twigs to wilt or die. And there are loads of cicadas, mind you, perhaps as many as 580 per square meter in some places.
“They’re impacting their host trees almost certainly,” said Richard Karban, an entomologist at UC Davis who worked with Yang on the tree study. “They probably do have a fertilizing effect, and they probably also have quite a large negative effect.”
There’s some indication that female cicadas can harm young or weak trees when they deposit their eggs, so it <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/16/world/brood-x-cicada-2021-scn/index.html">could be worth</a> holding off on new plantings.
What researchers still don’t know is how large those effects are, and for how long, exactly, they last. It’s possible, for example, that the changes in tree size could actually get more pronounced over time, Yang said.
And that’s just it: When it comes to these insects, there’s still plenty of mystery, partly because they live the majority of their lives underground and only emerge every so often. To put the time scale into perspective, the last time the 17-year Brood X cicadas sprang forth, in 2004, the original iPhone was still three years away from being unveiled.
“Cicadas are notoriously difficult to study,” Yang said. “There are things that we are just starting to understand.”

The video begins with the soon-to-be hero telling a jogging neighbor, “Good morning” just before the cat can be seen sprinting across the street in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Next, the man says, “I need to wash my car” to his wife who’s carrying an animal in a pet carrier.
At this time, a loud growl can be heard and the bobcat leaps on the woman carrying the small animal as she shrieks, “Oh my God!”
