Fast food over fine dining: What spending data tells us about the pandemic recovery

You can learn a lot by looking at where we went or didn’t go. And as vaccines become more widely available and the end of the pandemic potentially draws near, you can also use those measures to illustrate which industries have recovered or are still struggling</p> <p>Recovery from the impacts of the pandemic varies widely by industry, according to new data from <a href="https://www.earnestresearch.com/">Earnest Research</a>, which uses de-identified credit card, debit card, and mobile geolocation data to track spending and <a href="https://www.earnestresearch.com/earnest-foot-traffic/">foot traffic</a> at businesses in the United States. Even within a category like food or retail, there are winners and losers based on the particulars of the pandemic that made one type more or less popular than another. The data is indexed to the same month two years earlier — so March 2020 data would show the percentage difference from March 2018 — in order to strip out some of the huge dips when many businesses were closed completely during lockdown.</p> <p>Spending on online grocers like Fresh Direct and Instacart and delivery services like DoorDash and GrubHub soared during the pandemic to rates 400 percent higher than what they had been a couple years earlier, as people sought a safer way to get food than going to the supermarket or restaurants. While below their pandemic peaks, sales remain elevated far above where they had been as these types of commerce continue to grow in popularity.</p> <p>Restaurant recovery varied by type, though none is booming. Sales at fast food and fast casual restaurants — think Chipotle and Chopt, where you can pick up food but don’t necessarily dine in — are above 2019 levels. Meanwhile, sales at restaurants where people typically dine in, both fine dining chains like Capital Grille or Sugarfish and casual chains like Applebee’s and California Pizza Kitchen, remained depressed.</p> <p>Supermarket sales are back to the 2019 baseline after sales surged nearly 30 percent in the early pandemic. Perhaps people are over a lockdown spent cooking for themselves, but it’s more likely that grocery shopping has moved online and into meal kits.</p> <p>The biggest areas of apparel growth were in active and athleisure brands like Lululemon, Spanx, and Nike, as Americans worked from home and got comfy. Even from our quarantine isolation, our fashion followed collective trends bolstered by social media. Unflattering bike shorts became the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/8/7/21346846/bike-shorts-girlfriend-collective-aerie">official uniform of pandemic summer</a>.</p> <p>Unsurprisingly for those of us who have abstained from the strictures of pants and going out, professional and dress attire brands like Brooks Brothers and Banana Republic suffered most, and sales remain down. Purchases of fast fashion and luxury brands, however, are up — perhaps thanks to the beloved quarantine pastime of impulse buying online.</p> <p>And while certain types of clothing spend have recovered, the physical stores at which they were once purchased haven’t. Emergent Research data on foot traffic by category — which is different from their spending categories because they use different data sources — shows that people haven’t completely returned to clothing stores.</p> <p>In conjunction with the elevated spending data, this suggests that online sales have taken a bigger portion of clothing sales in a move that’s likely to be permanent.</p> <p>Even before the pandemic, physical gyms were in trouble, as <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/12/3/18072016/peloton-soulcycle-customer-comparison-tech-fitness-exercise">people increasingly opted to work out at home</a> on a new swath of at-home fitness equipment rather than in the gym. The pandemic closures during lockdown might have solidified that trend.</p> <p>Gym traffic is down 30 percent from pre-pandemic levels and spending is down significantly as well: 40 percent in March 2021 compared with March 2019, according to Earnest data. And it’s possible it will remain depressed, thanks to the enormous growth in spending on at-home workout equipment and subscriptions during the pandemic, with companies like Peloton and NordicTrack seeing rapid growth.</p> <p>Travel recovery is a bit harder to pin down, especially since a lot of travel during the pandemic happened locally, with people traveling by car and staying in Airbnbs nearby. The data we have also ends in March, before the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html">CDC gave the green light to vaccinated travelers</a>.</p> <p>What we do know is that foot traffic to airports, hotels, and rental car establishments remains down. And while numbers are ticking upward, spending data on airlines and online travel also remain depressed as of the end of March, according to Earnest’s data.</p> <p>That said, many are predicting a travel boom this summer. As more Americans get vaccinated — currently nearly a <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/28/960901166/how-is-the-covid-19-vaccination-campaign-going-in-your-state">quarter of the population</a> are fully vaccinated — it is likely that more people will take to the air (or boat or rental car). Three-quarters of Americans are planning a post-vaccine trip within the next six months, according to a new survey from <a href="https://www.predicthq.com/">PredictHQ</a>, a demand intelligence company.</p> <p>“My guess is there’s so much pent-up demand, domestic travel this summer will potentially be bigger than pre-pandemic levels,” PredictHQ CEO Campbell Brown told Recode.</p> <p>Americans, who have hoarded so many vacation days since the pandemic that some employers are <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-latest-workplace-perk-cash-bonuses-for-taking-vacations-11617960601">paying them to take off</a>, are about to summer like Europeans, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2021/04/pandemic-summer-vacation-time-off/618554/">according to the Atlantic</a>, which reported searches and reservations for summer growing rapidly on online portals.</p> <p>For now, our travel habits are closer to getting back to how they used to be.</p> <br /> <br /> source <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22379584/spending-foot-traffic-earnest-research-data-pandemic-recovery">https://www.vox.com/recode/22379584/spending-foot-traffic-earnest-research-data-pandemic-recovery</a>

It must stop.”</p> <p>Joe Biden and Kamala Harris also both <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/joe-biden-kamala-harris-tweet-support-for-duante-wrights-family/">tweeted support</a> Monday for the family of Duante Wright.</p> <p>Last year it was reported by the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/23/nyregion/nyc-shootings-surge.html?referringSource=articleShare">New York Times</a> that Gun violence is up 358% in New York City since June 2019 as police are being stripped of resources in Democrat run cities nationwide.</p> <p>The explosion in gun violence dovetailed with the <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/all/nypd-disbanding-unit-last-chapter-stop-frisk-n1231135">disbanding of NYPD anti-crime units</a>, a decision that meant around 600 plainclothes officers were taken off targeted raids and reassigned.</p> <p>In addition, Democrat imposed “reforms” have meant that around 40% of people arrested on gun possession charges were released without bail in 2019.</p> <p>Figures also show that other Democrat run cities including <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2020/6/6/21282353/chicago-crime-statistics-may-2020-overall-down-shootings-murders-up-unrest-protests-gun-violence">Chicago</a> and <a href="https://www.startribune.com/downtown-east-leads-minneapolis-neighborhoods-in-crime-increase/567777542/">Minneapolis</a> have experienced a massive uptick in gun violence.</p> <p>Despite the crime spike, the Minneapolis City Council <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/tommybeer/2020/06/12/minneapolis-city-council-unanimously-votes-to-replace-police-with-community-led-model/">unanimously passed a resolution</a> to replace the police department with a “community-led public safety system.”</p> <p>While the likes of Tlaib and her squad call for abolishing the police, the vast majority of black Americans are <a href="https://summit.news/2020/08/07/gallup-poll-80-of-black-americans-disagree-with-abolish-police-agenda/">diametrically opposed to such action</a>.</p> <p>Last year after unrest and violence targeting police, Harvard university Professor Roland Fryer <a href="https://summit.news/2020/06/16/harvard-professor-defunding-the-police-is-not-a-solution-and-could-cost-thousands-of-black-lives/">urged that defunding the police would cause more loss of life</a>, citing figures showing that there are “450 excess homicides per year” when police are not able to do their jobs proficiently.</p> <p>“Defunding the police is not a solution and could cost thousands of black lives,” professor Fryer wrote in an email to <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/harvard-professors-research-defunding-the-police-could-cost-thousands-of-black-lives/">the College Fix</a>.</p> <p>Fryer has recently authored a research paper titled <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w27324.pdf">“Policing the Police: The Impact of “Pattern-or-Practice Investigations on Crime,”</a> noting that police are less present when ‘viral incidents’ occur, meaning crime, including homicides increase… a lot.</p> <p><strong>SUBSCRIBE on YouTube:</strong></p> Follow on Twitter: <a class="twitter-follow-button" href="https://twitter.com/PrisonPlanet" data-show-count="false">Follow @PrisonPlanet</a> <p>———————————————————————————————————————<br /> Brand <strong>new merch</strong> now available! ‘White Boy Summer’ Meme Denounced as Racist by Actual Racists

<p><strong>Chet Hanks’ ‘White Boy Summer’ meme, which is essentially just a silly marketing ploy, is causing concern amongst leftists, many of whom are now claiming that the entire thing is a racist dog whistle that will embolden white supremacists.</strong></p> <p>The meme was launched last month by Chet Hanks, son of the Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, who told his Instagram followers in a video, “I just got this feeling man… it’s about to be a white boy summer.”</p> <p>The meme is a twist of the Megan Thee Stallion song from 2019 Hot Girl Summer and Hanks immediately clarified that it has nothing to do with ethnicity.</p> <p>“I’m not talking about Trump, Nascar-type white. I’m talking about me, (rappers) Jon B. Jack Harlow-type white boys, you know what I mean?” said Hanks.</p> <p>[embedded content]</p> <p>He subsequently emphasized that he was trying to spread an anti-racist message, stating, “You know what’s not White Boy Summer… is having any ill will or prejudice towards anybody from a different background, race, walk of life than you.”</p> <p>The rapper also laid out the “rules” for white boy summer, which included not harassing women, trying to stay sober and not getting in people’s faces with booze breath.</p> <p>Despite his many clarifications, the usual suspects accused Hanks of racism anyway.</p> <p>After he launched a line of merchandise featuring the words ‘White Boy Summer’, Hanks was accused of mimicking white supremacists because he used a Gothic-style font (yes in case you missed the memo, <a href="https://summit.news/2021/04/09/cnn-says-chinese-style-fonts-are-racist/">fonts are now racist</a> too).</p> <p>The claims were made despite Hanks wearing a ‘Stop Hate’ version of the merchandise in his official ‘White Boy Summer’ video (which primarily consists of the rapper dancing with twerking women, half of whom are black).</p> <p>[embedded content]</p> <p>Left-wing newspaper the Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/mar/31/tom-hanks-son-chet-criticized-racist-font-white-boy-summer">said</a> the typography was “similar to the Fraktur fonts, which were used in Nazi Germany most prominently on the cover of Hitler’s Mein Kampf book.”</p> <p>“Hmm unfortunately the merch looks aggressively racist,” said one Twitter user.</p> <p>“Jesus. When I think of typefaces white people should avoid, anything remotely calligraphic/blackletter looking pops immediately to mind, especially if it’s going to include the word ‘White’,” added another.</p> <p>Others said Hanks would attract support from the Proud Boys, a right-wing group that the media denounced as white supremacists despite it being led by a non-white person for years.</p> <p>Guardian columnist Arwa Mahdawi is also <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/apr/14/chet-hanks-keeps-calling-for-a-white-boy-summer-and-he-really-needs-to-stop">worried</a> that Hanks’ largely dopey exploits will fuel racial strife.</p> <p><img alt="null" src="https://cdn.summit.news/2021/04/Ey7YfrTW8AQG-ra.jpg" /></p> <p>“After four years of Donald Trump emboldening white supremacists, I don’t think now is the time to be calling for a white boy summer,” she whined.</p> <p>In reality, the fact that these people are so rattled by what is ostensibly a silly vacuous meme deployed to bolster a marketing gimmick tells you everything about the institutional anti-white hatred that now poisons the media and popular culture.</p> <p>The people responsible for this divisive attitude are the actual racists.</p> <p>Hanks can’t even refer to his own ethnicity in any other context than self-loathing and guilt without being accused of fueling racism.</p> <p>Merely displaying a hint of relaxed confidence that he should be comfortable in his own skin while encouraging other races to feel the same is strictly forbidden by a society that mandates white people constantly engage themselves in moral self-flaggelation to atone for their supposed sins.</p> <p><strong>SUBSCRIBE on YouTube:</strong></p> <p>Follow on Twitter: <a class="twitter-follow-button" href="https://twitter.com/PrisonPlanet" data-show-count="false">Follow @PrisonPlanet</a></p> <p>———————————————————————————————————————</p> <p>Brand <strong>new merch</strong> now available! Video: Rand Paul Demands Fauci Be ‘Removed From TV For Fear Mongering’

<p><strong>Appearing on Fox Business Tuesday, Senator Rand Paul made an impassioned plea for Anthony Fauci to be taken off the airwaves for continually ‘fear mongering’.</strong></p> <p>Paul claimed that Fauci has ceaselessly made claims that are not “matched by the science of his own institute.”</p> <p>“I so much think Dr. Fauci should be voluntarily removed from TV because what he says is such a disservice, and such fear-mongering,” Paul urged.</p> <p>The Senator pointed in particular to comments made by Fauci earlier this week when he claimed that Americans should still not be socialising together indoors, even if they have been fully vaccinated, comments that contradict CDC findings that vaccinated people cannot transmit the virus.</p> <p>Paul called Fauci’s demands “ridiculous”, “against the science,” and charged that Fauci could also be “discouraging people” from getting vaccinated.</p> <p>“People want a reward, rewards work, and your reward if you get the vaccine is you can live your life again, you’re not going to get it or transmit it to people, the likelihood is very, very small, and the risk is such that you could probably go back to living a normal life,” Paul stated.</p> <p>“So he needs to quit dictating to the entire world how to live and let us make our own decisions,” the Senator urged.</p> <p>Earlier this week Paul called Fauci a “petty tyrant,” accusing the White House medical advisor of  ignoring “100 years of vaccine science”.</p> <figure class="wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter"> <div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper" readability="9.7666666666667"> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true" readability="13.318181818182"> <p lang="en" dir="ltr" xml:lang="en">Fauci continues to ignore 100 years of vaccine science.</p> <p>His only real theme is “do what I say” even when it makes no sense.</p> <p>If you’ve recovered or been vaccinated – go about your life.
