An Asian American woman was walking through the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan on Monday morning when a stranger approached.
The 65-year-old woman stopped abruptly outside a luxury condo tower, surveillance video shows.
Suddenly, the man kicked her in the stomach, knocking her to the sidewalk, and then brutally stomped on her head again and again. All the while, police said, he spewed slurs at her.
As the woman was viciously attacked, video appears to show at least three people in the condo's lobby passively watching the violence. When the attacker walks away, leaving the injured woman prone on the sidewalk, one man - reportedly a security guard - calmly shut the door on her.
The video has led to new calls for an end to the rising tide of violence against Asian Americans and raised questions about the bystanders' conduct.

"The cold-hearted building security guard not only failed to render aid, he closed the door on the victim," the New York Police Department's Asian Hate Crimes Task Force wrote in a since-deleted tweet about the video, WABC reported.
Early on Tuesday, the company that manages the condo tower announced that the staffers involved in the incident have been suspended.
"The staff who witnessed the attack have been suspended pending an investigation in conjunction with their union," the Brodsky Organization wrote in an Instagram post, which also noted the company is trying to identify a "third-party vendor" who was also on the scene "so that appropriate action can be taken."
The case was one of two attacks on Asian Americans in New York caught on video and publicized on Monday, on the same day that city leaders gathered in Brooklyn to urge quick action to halt a rising tide of racist violence and threats.
"This is absolutely vile. These attacks against Asian-American New Yorkers must end," New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, D, said on Twitter, linking to a video of the attack on the woman. "Hate has no place here and we must always call it out when we see it."
In recent weeks, Asian Americans in New York have reported being punched in subway cars, spit on and pummeled with metal pipes - an ugly echo of a national trend that activists say gained traction as former president Donald Trump has used racist terms to tie the coronavirus pandemic to China.
The first attack shared by the NYPD on Monday took place onboard a Manhattan-bound subway car in Brooklyn. Police have not said when the attack took place, but a video of the incident shows an Asian man wearing a backpack being shoved by another passenger, who then starts punching him in the face repeatedly. Eventually, the passenger locks the man in a chokehold, tightly gripping his neck until he passes out on the floor of the train.
"The NYPD is aware of this video and is investigating," the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force said on Twitter on Monday morning.
The attack in Hell's Kitchen happened just before noon on Monday, police said, as the unidentified victim was walking along West 43rd Street. The woman was headed to church, WABC reported, when the attacker yelled, "F--- you, you don't belong here," and began assaulting her.
Video shows one man in the building's lobby watching the entirety of the attack. That man, who appeared to be tying a stack of boxes onto a cart, stared out the glass doors as the woman was repeatedly kicked in the head, but made no move to assist her. Two other men, who were security guards according WABC, then walked toward the entrance as the assailant left, and closed the door on the victim.
The woman "sustained a serious physical injury," the NYPD said, and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was in stable condition. The NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the case.
City officials, activists and celebrities decried the video and urged a swift arrest for the attacker.
"This is absolutely disgusting. Asian Americans belong in New York and are an integral part of our city," tweeted Scott Stringer, New York City's comptroller and a candidate for mayor. "We have to continue to speak out, we have to continue to protect our AAPI neighbors, and we have to act immediately to #StopAsianHate."
Others questioned the apparent lack of action from the bystanders in the lobby.
"This is despicable. The attack and the guard's inaction and closing the door on the victim," tweeted actress Gemma Chan.
Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., who was among the officials calling for an end to anti-Asian hate crimes at the meeting in Brooklyn earlier on Monday, said the video reinforced a profound lack of empathy for Asian Americans.
"We've gone from being invisible to being seen as sub-human," Meng tweeted. "We just want to be seen as American like everyone else."

For any company doing business in China, the choice is now clearer than ever: Avoid commenting on any controversial subjects or risk losing access to the world's second-largest economy.
Over the past few weeks, President Xi Jinping's government endorsed a boycott against retailers like Hennes & Mauritz AB and slapped sanctions on a range of organizations -- including a group of barristers in the U.K. -- over statements made on alleged forced labor in Xinjiang. Then on Tuesday, he signed off on sweeping changes to Hong Kong's election system to give Beijing veto power over any candidates.
China's more aggressive stance, triggered in part by collective action by the U.S. and its allies to sanction Chinese officials, is forcing companies to quickly weigh what they will do to maintain access to 1.4 billion consumers with ever-more spending power. So far, with growth in the rest of the world anemic, most companies are either keeping their heads down or stepping up investments.
While it used to be easier for companies to operate in China and manage corporate social responsibility, now it's difficult to show that outside influence has any impact on changing the Communist Party's actions, according to Margaret Lewis, a law professor and China specialist at Seton Hall University.
"You end up in this dilemma of stay in and be complicit or pull out," she said. "The middle ground between those two is increasingly difficult to find. It's a starker decision now."
The best strategy for brands like H&M facing a boycott in China is to lay low and wait until the backlash "blows over," Joerg Wuttke, head of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, told Bloomberg TV on Tuesday. Indeed, several companies pulled statements on Xinjiang off their websites.
'Complicated Picture'
"It's a complicated picture," Wuttke said. "On the one hand, China saved the skin of many companies last year," he said. "At the same time, you have of course this kind of political pressure that is on you, and again a topic like Xinjiang is a no-win situation."
Many foreign companies with good relations are expanding their presence in China, and Hong Kong's finance sector is booming this year due to an influx of IPOs and work on SPAC listing deals. Companies including Baidu Inc. and Bilibili Inc. have raised almost $17 billion through first-time shares sales in the city so far this year, up nine times from a year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
New York-based Citigroup Inc. plans to hire as many as 1,700 staff in Hong Kong as it seeks to tap growing links between the financial hub and rising affluence in southern mainland cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen. A pandemic-induced hunger for technology stocks and the threat of U.S. delistings have been a boon for the financial hub, driving a surge in initial and secondary share sales.
For some international law firms advising companies, however, the environment for working in Hong Kong just got a lot trickier. China's retaliatory sanctions against the U.K. included the Essex Court Chambers, which a prominent lawyer warned could have much bigger consequences for investors.
After being hit with the sanctions, the Financial Times reported that the chambers removed a reference from its website to a legal opinion by some of its lawyers implicating the Chinese government in alleged genocide in Xinjiang. The Communist Party-backed Global Times newspaper said the action showed that China's sanction were an "effective deterrent against rumors."
But Guy Sandhurst, formerly chairman of the Bar of England and Wales, said the move will affect "all British companies who do business with Chinese clients" because lawyers involved in dispute resolution for Hong Kong firms could be denied access to the territory. He called for the "Western world" to insist on dispute resolution mechanisms outside China for all future contracts.
"Today it is the members of Essex Court Chambers who are sanctioned," Sandhurst wrote on the website of the Society of Conservative Lawyers. "But tomorrow it might be Clifford Chance, Freshfields or some other major city law firm or Chambers of barristers which wittingly or otherwise offends the Chinese state."
Xi's move on Tuesday to officially revamp Hong Kong's election system could unleash another round of criticism and potential sanctions against Western nations, which have failed to change China's behavior. The changes allow a small group of mainland and Hong Kong national security officials to vet every candidate standing for election, ensuring that only those loyal to Beijing are able to implement policy.
'Dangerous Decisions'
In a letter printed on the front pages of several Hong Kong newspapers on Wednesday, leader Carrie Lam said the changes will help mitigate "excessive politicization" in society and allow the territory "to develop the economy and improve the livelihood of our citizens." Former chief executive Leung Chun-ying echoed that in an interview on Tuesday.
"A lot of opportunities," he said when asked about Hong Kong's economic future. "It is a question of opening our minds, our eyes and ears to these opportunities and then just share with the international community."

But while Xi's actions in Hong Kong and Xinjiang may look tough and Chinese officials are talking to the world "like now they have nothing to learn," the moves actually reveal a paranoia that could end up backfiring among companies and countries, according to Jean-Pierre Cabestan, a political science professor at Hong Kong Baptist University who's authored several books on Chinese foreign policy.
"It's a kind of nervousness, which is a sign of weakness and a sign that they don't feel secure," he said. "And that's worrisome, because when you're insecure you may embark on dangerous decisions and actions toward others."

Katura Stokes's 12 year-old son had struggled to adapt to online learning at his Southern California school, so his mother was thrilled when his science teacher set up a January Zoom call to help him.
But then the teacher, Kimberly Newman, apparently forgot to end the call.
For more than 30 minutes, Stokes says, she recorded Newman as she made racist comments about the family, which is Black, and bashed Stokes's parenting skills.
"She's answered her phone for the first time the entire year," the White sixth-grade teacher allegedly says in a video recording shared with The Washington Post. "I mean these parents, that's what kind of piece of sh*t they are."
Newman, who was suspended that same day after Stokes complained to school officials, has since resigned, said David Garcia, a spokesman with the Palmdale School District. According to Garcia, the district was never able to open an investigation into the incident because Newman refused to cooperate and resigned shortly after district officials called her for an interview.
Now, Stokes is taking legal action against the school district for the emotional toll the incident has inflicted upon her family. On Thursday she filed a claim, the first step toward a lawsuit against a public entity under California law, that also seeks monetary damages for negligence, defamation and civil rights violations.
"They are so disappointed and in disbelief over the fact that this is still happening in this day and age," Neil K. Gehlawat, one of the family's attorneys, told The Post. "Ms. Stokes was asking for help and in response, she gets a racist rant and unbeknown to her, her son is listening to a lot of it. There's this teacher that he looked up to saying these awful things. It's just so hurtful and difficult for him to process."
Garcia said the district was quick to act and that the teacher's behavior would not be tolerated.
"We do not stomach racist behavior at the Palmdale School District, whether you are caught on video or not," he said.
Newman could not be reached for comment.
This is not the first time the school district in Palmdale, a city north of Los Angeles, has made headlines for racist incidents. In 2019, four teachers and a principal at another school were suspended after a picture of them posing with what appeared to be a noose circulated on social media, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Stokes said her son has struggled since the school switched to remote learning last year. School officials suggested she ask his teachers for assistance, so she scheduled a Zoom on January 20 with Newman. The teacher then helped him complete all of his late assignments.
But just when Stokes was about to end the call, Newman, who had not exited the conference, began a tirade of "racist" and "inflammatory" remarks, her claim states. Stokes, in disbelief, took out her phone and began recording.
First, Newman allegedly described writing and sending an email to teachers and administrators, "in which she repeatedly mocked and denigrated Ms. Stokes."
Then, in the recording, Newman said: "The family is a piece of sh*t, they are Black, they are Black," before suggesting Stokes and her son are lazy.
She continued, "Your son has learned to lie to everybody and make excuses ... Since you've taught him to make excuses that nothing is his fault. This is what Black people do."
Newman was still ranting when Stokes says she called the school principal to alert him about the incident. The teacher only left the Zoom after a school employee called her to ask if she had made racist and profane remarks about Stokes and her son, which she denied, the claim states.
Garcia said Newman was suspended hours later. He added that the school offered Stokes and her son counseling, which the family allegedly declined. Gehlawat said the school sent out someone to Stokes's home to get a copy of the recording.
The school announced the teacher's resignation at a Feb. 5 press conference, the Antelope Valley Press reported.
"Our investigation is limited in that the teacher is no longer with the district so as you can imagine her cooperation is non-existent." Garcia said. "With her not at the district, we have no recourse at this point."
Gehlawat, whose office filed the claim on Thursday, said Stokes does not believe the district's actions were sufficient and worries that her son will not have a "fair shake" at the school after Newman allegedly sent emails denigrating her and her son to teachers and administrators.
"That makes her believe that there's other teachers that have similar feelings towards them, maybe not to the same level as the science teacher who said these things but on some level," Gehlawat said. "As a parent, Ms. Stokes thinks that other teachers think of her as a problem parent."
Garcia said the district "has no evidence" of those emails.
Stokes's son has since returned to the virtual classroom, at least until the end of the school year, Gehlawat said.
"Ms. Stokes and her son have been permanently scarred as a result of Mrs. Newman's comments," the claim states.

A college science professor and an aerospace data analyst were named on Tuesday to round out a four-member crew for a SpaceX launch into orbit planned later this year billed as the first all-civilian spaceflight in history.
The two latest citizen astronauts were introduced at a news briefing livestreamed from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida by SpaceX human spaceflight chief Benji Reed and billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who conceived the mission in part as a charity drive.
Isaacman, founder and CEO of e-commerce firm Shift4 Payments, is forking over an unspecified but presumably exorbitant sum to fellow billionaire and SpaceX owner Elon Musk to fly himself and three others into orbit aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
The flight, scheduled for no earlier than September 15, is expected to last three to four days from launch to splashdown.
"When this mission is complete, people are going to look at it and say this was the first time that everyday people could go to space," Isaacman, 38, told reporters.
Dubbed Inspiration4, the mission is designed primarily to raise awareness and support for one of Isaacman's favorite causes, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a leading pediatric cancer center. He has pledged $100 million personally to the institute.
Assuming the role of mission "commander," Isaacman in February designated St. Jude physician's assistant Haley Arceneaux, 29, a bone cancer survivor and onetime patient at the Tennessee-based hospital, as his first crewmate.
Announced on Tuesday, Chris Sembroski, 41, a Seattle-area aerospace industry employee and U.S. Air Force veteran, was selected through a sweepstakes that drew 72,000 applicants and has raised $113 million in St. Jude donations.
Sian Proctor, 51, a geoscience professor at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, and entrepreneur who was once a NASA astronaut candidate, was chosen separately through an online business contest run by Shift4 Payments.
All four will undergo extensive training modeled after the curriculum NASA astronauts use to prepare for SpaceX missions.
The Inspiration4 mission may mark a new era in spaceflight, but it is not the only all-civilian crewed rocket launch in the works.
British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic enterprise is developing a spaceplane to carry paying customers on suborbital excursions.
SpaceX plans a separate launch, possibly next year, of a retired NASA astronaut, a former Israeli fighter pilot and two other people in conjunction with Houston-based private spaceflight company Axiom Space.
Musk also intends to fly Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa around the moon in 2023. Fees charged for those flights will help finance the development of Musk's new, heavy-lift Starship rocket for missions to the moon and Mars.
Inspiration4 is about more than a billionaire's joyride through space, organizers say, promising the crew will conduct a number of as-yet undetermined science experiments during its brief voyage.

Afghanistan has welcomed the remarks made by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar at the ''Heart Of Asia'' conference in Dushanbe on Tuesday.
Referring to the presence of foreign fighters in Afghanistan, S Jaishankar had said, "For a durable peace in Afghanistan, what we need is a genuine 'double peace', that is, peace within Afghanistan and peace around Afghanistan."
S Jaishankar's remarks were seen as a veiled reference to Pakistan's continued support to regional terrorism and non-state actors.
Talking exclusively to ANI, the Afghan envoy to India backed India's position and said that support to non-state actors from foreign governments must stop.
Farid Mamundzay said, "Till terror support continues from within the region of beyond region the conflict will continue, we have been suffering our people are suffering because of foreign fighters, Afghans have suffered the most, it's not a civil war in Afghanistan, it's international terrorism and that has caused a lot of misery and lot of blood, so wherever it is coming from we want all those non-state actors to stop killing Afghans and destabilising Afghanistan."
Recently, Afghanistan foreign minister Mohammed Hanif Atmar, who was in New Delhi, urged India to be part of all forum where peace in Afghanistan is discussed as it has huge stakes in the development of the country.
The security scenario in Afghanistan has direct implications for India. Moreover, New Delhi also echoed its support for an immediate ceasefire in Afghanistan.
"Afghanistan envoy to India said, "Troika echoed the opinion of international community produced a very good statement that level of violence should be dropped, this is a very principle position from India, it is a very strategic partner, it is the largest contributor to development in Afghanistan, it has stakes in Afghanistan, India wants peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan, we are grateful India is supporting the position of the Afghan government, violence has to be stopped, violence has to dropped in weeks and months ahead."
According to diplomatic sources, the External Affairs Minister is expected to make a visit to Kabul soon. It is learnt that Atmar invited S Jaishankar to Kabul during his India visit and that dates are being worked out.
When asked about the S Jaishankarproposed visit to Kabul, the envoy said, "No dates are finalised, we are working on it, we expect senior leadership to visit Afghanistan soon."

Two Capitol Police officers sued former US president Donald Trump Tuesday for inciting the January 6 insurrection that left dozens of their fellow officers injured and one dead.
Officers James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby said they suffered "physical and emotional injuries" in the riot they said was fomented by Trump, when he was in his final weeks as president and refusing to accept his election defeat.
"The insurrectionists were spurred on by Trump's conduct over many months in getting his followers to believe his false allegation that he was about to be forced out of the White House because of massive election fraud," they said in the suit filed in federal court in Washington.

The African-American officer said he was subjected to racist attacks during the assault on Congress from the Trump supporters.
Hemby, an 11-year officer, has hand and knee injuries after being crushed against Capitol building doors, and was sprayed in his face and on his body by chemical sprays in the attack.
"Officer Hemby normally has a calm demeanor but has struggled to manage the emotional fallout from being relentlessly attacked," the suit says.
The lawsuit compiles numerous instances in which it says Trump encouraged the insurrection.
It accuses Trump of directing and abetting assault and battery and emotional distress, incitement to riot, and violating public safety statutes.
The officers asked the court for compensatory damages of a minimum of $75,000 each and an unstated amount in punitive damages.
