Catholic Priest Dying In Captivity By ISIS Begs For Help 'Please, I Need Medical Attention'

While he is still alive, he may not be for much longer as in a recent video he has begged for help, saying that he is very sick and needs hospitalization<blockquote>Uzhunnalil, 58, who hails from Kerala, was abducted in March last year by a terror group. He had gone missing in Yemen after the Islamic State militant group attacked a care home run by Mother Teresas Missionaries of Charity.Gunmen had stormed the refuge for the elderly in April last year and killed a Yemeni guard before tying up and shooting 15 other employees.Four foreign nuns, including an Indian, working as nurses were among those killed.Uzhunnalil was captured from the southern Yemeni city of Aden by gunmen who killed at least 15 people at an old people's home in an attack that was condemned by Pope Francis.In the video carried by Aden Time news website, a frail- looking priest said, "I am Father Tom Uzhunnalil. My date of birth is August 18, 1958. I received the message of concern that you sent me my dear family people. I am thankful to you. Thank you very much"."They (abductors) are treating me well to the extent that they are able. My health condition is deteriorating quickly and I require hospitalisation as early as possible."They contacted our Indian government authorities several times and I have seen the message of their response. It was very very poor," the white-bearded Father says.The date April 15, 2017 was scribbled on a piece of paper seen on his body."They also contacted Bishop, Bishop of Abu Dhabi. Their too response to us was not encouraging. Neither the Bishop nor the Indian government authorities asked them what they really want to get me released. It is a poor response and I am sad about that."My dear family people, do what you can to help me release. Please please do what you can which helps to get me release. May god bless you for that," he added in the video.The veracity of the video could not be ascertained.It is not yet clear who was behind his abduction.External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in December last year had said India will spare no effort to secure release of Tom Uzhunnalil.Her remarks had come a day after a purported video by the priest appealing to the government to free him surfaced.In that video, Tom was seen pleading for help from Indian government and fellow Christians including Pope Francis. However, the veracity of the video could not be ascertained. Members of a Saudi-led coalition, which supports exiled president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, has been battling Huthi rebels and their allies since March 2015. The boy told the pastor and his wife that a group of men were waiting outside to meet him, according to pastor Arun Kumar, who is now leading the victim’s Pentecostal congregation.“When the pastor stepped out, 15 men started beating him and accused him of conversions in the village,” Arun Kumar told Morning Star News.“They badgered his head with iron swords and sticks. Pastor Sikandar fell down unconscious; he had a deep injury on his head. He was bleeding severely.”The assailants were shouting, “Jai Sri Ram, Jai Sri Ram (Hail Lord Ram),” he said, adding that they left the church compound apparently assuming Pastor Kumar was dead.Police suspect the attackers were Ram Bhakts, devotees of Ram, who carried out processions in the district that day as part of a Hindu spring festival known as Rama Navami.“Since there are no eyewitnesses, we detained five suspects based on Pastor Sikandar’s complaint,” the Vaishali District superintendent told Morning Star News. “We detained five suspects, but the victim, Pastor Sikandar, couldn’t identify them. So we released them.”Pastor Kumar’s injuries were deep, he said, adding, “It was clear that the attack was brutal. The investigation is on.”Arun Kumar said he and others found the pastor bleeding in the church compound.“The assailants even snatched away his mobile and have been answering calls from media and believers for weeks now,” Arun Kumar said. “I asked the police to trace it.”While he has not faced any direct opposition since taking over pastoral duties at the church, Arun Kumar said he has received threatening phone calls.“More than 100 families attend the church,” he said. “The police have provided us security for the Sunday worship.”Prior to the attack on him, Pastor Kumar had complained to police after he and other church members were attacked by Hindu extremists on Feb. 10, Arun Kumar said.“He even wrote to the chief minister and other government officials in February,” he said. “He didn’t receive any great response.”Doctors in Hajipur referred Pastor Kumar to Patna Medical College for further treatment. Local church’s administration has become obnoxious to the local Muslim community on the pretext of supporting the girl’s family.Soon after the news of this marriage spread in the area, local influential people decided that the newly wedded couple will not be allowed to return to the neighborhood, as this may cause dissensions between local Christians and Muslims. However, now the family members of Rana Sakif, the boy who had who had lured the Christian girl to elope with him; are singling out each and every Christian who had tried to pursue legal course of action.“Rana Kashif, Rana Atif and Kishwar Bibi and Rana Sakif are threatening us,” Pastor Shahid said. He urged the authorities to take necessary action and apprehend the gangsters and family members of Rana Sakif involved in harassing and intimidating the Christians. “Despite the fact that they have taken notice, we do not feel safe,” he voiced his fear adding,”Local Christian journalists and social activists have stepped forward and highlighted our case.” He called upon the authorities to provide security to the Christians who are on pins and needles. The surge of anger against him began when a video, falsely subtitled, started to be mass distributed on youtube, supposedly showing the governor stating that the Quran states that non-Muslims cannot have a Muslim leader. Mobs began to demand for his death, and now he will be behind bars for two years. The story is a demonstration as to how dangerous the internet can become when used to rile up the mob, and also how Islamist Indonesia is becoming. If they can put the governor of Indonesia's capital in prison, then they will -- under the instigation of the mob, put regular Christians in prison, in mass numbers.
