Refugee Who Was Tripped By Camerawoman Is Given A Job As A Soccer Coach In Madrid

<p>Last week we reported on the story of a refugee <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/nationalist-tv-crew-caught-attacking-child-refugees-tripping-man-carrying-a-child/">who was attacked by a camerawoman</a> that worked for a nationalist news outlet.</p>
<p>Petra László of N1TV was filming a group of <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=refugee" target="_blank">refugees</a> running away from police officers when she stuck out her leg to trip a man who carrying a child in his arms. Stephan Richter, a reporter for the German television channel RTL was on the scene and was able to film the incident.</p>
<p>This week, we have learned the identity of that man and have been able to find out what he has been up to since the incident with the camerawoman.</p>
<p>Osama Abdul Mohsen is the man who was tripped in the video, and it was <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/europes-border-crisis/refugee-kicked-camerawoman-gets-soccer-coaching-job-spain-n428966?cid=sm_fc" target="_blank">reported this week</a> that he was offered a job as a soccer coach in Spain. Administrators at Spain’s Cenafe national soccer coaching center heard about the story and found out that he was a soccer coach in Syria so they decided to hire him.</p>
<p><em>“I love you, I love Madrid. Thank you for all. This is very, very important for my life. I am here with you. Thank you very much,”</em> Mohsen said.</p>
<p><em>“We lost our house in Syria after suffering a number of artillery shells by [President] Assad’s forces</em>,” <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/europes-border-crisis/migrant-kicked-camerawoman-idd-syrian-soccer-coach-n425751" target="_blank">his oldest son, Almuhannad, told NBC News.</a></p>
<p>Miguel Angel Galan, the soccer organization’s president said that he was inspired to help after reading about the story, and that he wanted to show “solidarity” because “we are colleagues.”</p>
<p>Many of the anti-immigration commenters who have been against allowing the refugees to move from their war-torn homes, have claimed that Syrian migrants would be a drain on the economy and would eat up the benefits and welfare that Europeans receive. However, this is not true, many of the migrants are skilled and willing workers who don’t want any handouts, they just want to work and own their own property in place that is relatively peaceful and safe to raise children.</p>

<p>Short, squat and strident, Nikos Michaloliakos draws thunderous applause as he exhorts the crowd to stand up and say “No!” Days before Greeks go to the polls, the Golden Dawn leader does not want his message to go unheard.</p>
<p>“No to the memorandums. No to illegal immigration,” he roars as he punches the air before a backdrop emblazoned by his party’s swastika-style motif. “We won’t allow them to make us a minority in our own country!”</p>
<p>Until March, the seemingly avuncular Michaloliakos was in prison on charges of running a criminal gang masquerading as a political organization. But six months is a long time in politics.</p>
<p>As he spits into the microphone, his face contorted with fury, his voice tremulous and his supporters cheering him on, it is clear the neo-fascist leader is on a roll. Golden Dawn is having a good election.</p>
<p>Four short weeks of campaigning before a snap poll called by the leftist leader and former prime minister Alexis Tsipras have gone surprisingly well. In successive opinion surveys, the virulently anti-immigrant, antisemitic, anti-EU party has emerged as Greece’s third-biggest political force – the sole certainty in an election that has defied expectation in almost every other way.</p>
<p>Under the banner of being “the only nationalist choice,” the far-rightists have persistently polled between 5.5% and 7%. Tsipras’s Syriza has been shown to be neck and neck with its main challenger, the conservative New Democracy, quashing hopes of an easy victory.</p>
<p>In rallies, including the one held at Michaloliakos’s speech in the seaside town of Megara on Monday, euphoric supporters speak of a “double-digit” victory, with the party gaining 10% or more on a wave of outrage over their country’s economic collapse and perceived invasion by thousands of “illegal migrants.”</p>
<p>“I am afraid. For the first time we have no idea what this election will bring,” said the former conservative MP Fotini Pipili. “What we do know, however, is that Golden Dawn is going to do well, and for the serious minded that is a very worrying thing.”</p>
<p>Pipili, among the female politicians the extremists have publicly targeted – with Golden Dawn MPs hurling abuse at her in parliament and party cadres hounding her outside her country home – is sure of something else: Greece’s frontline role in Europe’s refugee crisis is also emboldening the neo-Nazi group. “They have been inflamed by what many saw as provocative immigration policies under the leftists and all these desperate people arriving every day,” she says.</p>
<p>Touring Kos and other Aegean islands most affected by the influx, Golden Dawn MPs brazenly played on locals’ fears. “Elections are approaching,” Ilias Kasidiaris, the party’s swastika-tattooed spokesman, told residents. “Kos has a choice. If [inhabitants] choose to vote Syriza it will turn into Pakistan. If they choose Golden Dawn and Golden Dawn governs the land, then Kos will become Greece again. And that is our goal.”</p>
<p>Michaloliakos, who like other party leaders was released from prison after serving the pre-trial maximum of 18 months, is accused of overseeing offences that range from money laundering to murder and armed attack. The hearing began this year. The accused deny the charges. Earlier this year the party posted a statement on its website, saying: “Golden Dawn states unequivocally that it wants and expects the smooth conduct of a fair trial ... which will prove the an attempt to frame-up the movement of Greek nationalists at the behest of foreign power centres.”</p>
<p>Until the stabbing of Pavlos Fyssas, a Greek anti-fascist rapper killed two years ago this week, Golden Dawn’s victims were dark-skinned migrants and refugees, leftists and gay people. Golden Dawn has denied any involvement in the killing of Fyssas.</p>
<p>Fyssas’s murder finally goaded authorities into action with parliamentarians being rounded up and arrested. A 692–page report compiled by prosecutors assigned to investigate its criminal activities described Golden Dawn – before the crisis a fringe party gaining less than 0.5% – as Europe’s most dangerous political force.</p>
<p>After the crackdown, it was thought support would begin to wane. But the extremists have shown remarkable resilience. In European elections in 2014, they won more than 9%, deliberately softening their image, tempering their rhetoric and shedding boots for suits a far cry from the black-shirted assault squads they had formerly been associated with.</p>
<p>In the last national vote in January, they gained 6.9%, despite most of Golden Dawn’s leaders being forced to campaign from behind bars. Now allowed to roam freely, in an atmosphere of growing austerity-driven poverty and despair, the far-rightists have also rallied support on the back of fury over yet more tax rises and budget cuts, the price of further rescue funds for the debt-stricken country.</p>
<p>Calling the latest EU-backed bailout the equivalent of “ethnocide” and a “memorandum of death,” Michaloliakos has tried to portray the party as the only anti-establishment force able to defend Greeks. MPs say with Tsipras now embracing the very policies he once opposed, the mantle of the anti-austerity struggle has passed to them. Human rights groups are sounding the alarm.</p>
<p>“The recent bailout, whatever its economic merits and pragmatic imperatives, gives Golden Dawn an opportunity to broaden support as its leaders bill themselves as the only principled opponents of austerity,” said Tad Stahnke, of Human Rights First. “This prospect should alarm advocates of human rights and democratic values everywhere. Golden Dawn is no run-of-the-mill nationalist group,” he said, adding it was vital the trial of Golden Dawn was seen to be fair and impartial.</p>
<p>In the runup Sunday’s elections, politicians have voiced concerns that Golden Dawn could become the main opposition if, as looks likely, neither Syriza nor New Democracy win a majority and are forced to share power.</p>
<p>In a nation still haunted by memories of brutal occupation under the Third Reich, the entire political spectrum has pledged it will not allow Golden Dawn to have such a role. “A lot of people are praying it is the socialist Pasok and not the fascists who come third,” Pipili said.</p>
<p>But Greece, post-crisis, is unpredictable. What worries many is that the extremists, ignored by the mainstream media and kept out of political debate, have already got so far.</p>

<p>Elaine Brown is no stranger to radical ideas. The 72-year-old former chairwoman of the Black Panther Party has long advocated on behalf of prisoners. Now she is determined to transform a once-blighted vacant lot in West Oakland, California into a thriving urban farm business that employs former offenders. And the produce they cultivate is destined for a fine dining restaurant in a city fast gaining a reputation as an eating destination.</p>
<p>Brown’s project, announced last October, is ambitious. The first step has been establishing a for-profit West Oakland Farms, whose 40 raised beds are already overflowing with tomatoes, peppers, kale, squash, corn, and other produce. Down the road, Brown wants to add a juice bar, fitness center, grocery store, and tech design space, along with affordable housing on the city-owned property under the umbrella of the nonprofit organization she founded last year, Oakland & the World Enterprises.</p>
<p>“I’m not in the farm business,” she told Civil Eats recently. “I’m in the business of creating opportunities for Black men and women who are poor and lack the education, skills, and resources to return to a community that is rapidly gentrifying without economic avenues for them in mind.”</p>
<p>Think of it as part prisoner re-entry program, part small business startup incubator, and part community hub. Brown chaired the Black Panthers from 1974 to 1977 and, after more than a 30-year absence, moved back to Oakland in 2010. The project marks her return to activism in the city. Since 2013, Brown has been working closely with Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson on youth and employment re-entry projects in West Oakland.</p>
<p>Time may have passed but Brown’s message remains the same: self-sufficiency, self-determination, and empowerment for her people. Only these days, they’re armed with shovels, wheelbarrows, and other farm tools.</p>
<p>The farm is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Oakland & the World Enterprises leases the three-quarter acre plot from the city in a section of Oakland that has been slower to bounce back than other areas. The land is located directly across from the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) line, which connects Oakland to San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area. As with much of the rest of this city, West Oakland is a neighborhood that many believe is rapidly gentrifying. Community farms, cafés, and restaurants are popping up, but the area still lacks a supermarket.</p>
<p>Brown thinks big. She’s also realistic about what one program can do. “This is not a panacea, it’s a model,” she says. “People come out of the joint with nothing to do and $200 in their pocket. Once that money runs out … they’ll do anything to survive, including hitting somebody in the head for $20.” We have to create positive opportunities for these people to return to the community.”</p>
<p><strong>A Second Chance for People and a Place</strong></p>
<p>Despite its recent bleak history, this neighborhood was once a vibrant African-American cultural center, where jazz and blues were a draw. But a series of freeways, a postal distribution center, and the train line cut through the neighborhood, sucking the soul out of it in the process. As with the ex-prisoners, Brown wants to help give West Oakland a second chance, too.</p>
<p>But she knows she has a long way to go. While Brown has the vision, she still has to raise significant funding to make it a reality. She’s looking to nonprofit groups and private donors to invest in her idea. She estimates the entire project, including housing, will cost in the $30 to $40 million range. To date, she’s received only around $300,000 in grants and county funding.</p>
<p>For now, the farm employs 10 former inmates on a part-time, rotating basis and pays them $20 an hour. It has also landed its first culinary client contract: Picán Restaurant, an upscale Southern-influenced restaurant in the city’s lively Uptown district, and one of the few Black-owned restaurants in the area.</p>
<p>It was a privilege to come on board as a restaurant partner, says Picán owner Michael LeBlanc. In addition to buying from the farm, the restaurant is hosting fundraising and goodwill-building dinners for West Oakland Farms once a month through the end of the year.</p>
<p>Brown, who concedes to knowing little about growing or cooking food, has enlisted Master Gardener Kelly Carlisle to oversee the effort. An ex-Navy officer and longtime East Oakland resident, Carlisle also runs the nonprofit Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project.</p>
<p>“Working with kids is one thing, working with adults who have been in prison is something else,” says Carlisle. “Some of my crew asks if they can go to the bathroom, that’s how engrained prison culture is for them.”</p>
<p><strong>After Time Behind Bars, a Chance to Grow</strong></p>
<p>In a matter of months, the team has built an obvious rapport. GaQuayla LaGrone, 32, began working at the farm in April. She had never farmed before and it took her a few weeks to get over her squeamishness around insects. LaGrone hopes to eventually start her own business making natural hair care products for African Americans. “I might even be able to use herbs or flowers from the farm in the products,” she says.</p>
<p>“Every day I come here I learn something new. I didn’t know that a lot of fruits start life as a flower; that just blew my mind,” says Ray Kidd, 26. He was incarcerated from age 16 to 23 for violent crimes, and wants to break free of the prison cycle: Both his biological parents are in federal prison.</p>
<p>West Oakland Farms is not the only local program that hires ex-inmates. Planting Justice, which builds community produce gardens, also hires former prisoners. But given the crushing numbers of people exiting prison without work opportunities, there’s room for many more such undertakings.</p>

<p>Occupy Wall Street may not have dismantled capitalism – but it did profoundly change the way people perceived it, and how their voices impact institutions of power all over the world. While the tent encampments of fall 2011 were evicted within months, Occupy didn’t die – rather, its organizers went on to build social justice movements and affect political outcomes on multiple continents.</p>
<p>Were it not for Occupy, Bernie Sanders may not be a <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/news/hillary-clintons-lead-over-bernie-sanders-cut-by-half-in-national-poll/" rel="nofollow">frontrunner</a> in the Democratic presidential primary. Jeremy Corbyn – a <a href="http://www.vox.com/2015/9/12/9314779/jeremy-corbyn-labour-leader" rel="nofollow">sexagenarian vegetarian socialist</a> – wouldn’t have overcome the UK’s establishment political machine to become new Labour Party leader. And Malcolm Turnbull wouldn’t have ousted Tony Abbott as Australia’s <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/14/asia/hfr-australia-malcolm-turnbull/" rel="nofollow">newest prime minister</a>.</p>
<p>However, on the four year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, it’s important to reflect not only on its victories but to learn from its failures. Both were necessary, as the movements that came after Occupy built off of those victories by learning from its downfalls.</p>

<p><strong>Occupy’s Victories</strong></p>
<p>Occupy Wall Street had many goals – some of them lofty, many of them practical. In establishing themselves as the "99%", OWS drew a clear line between the wealthiest Americans that gobbled up almost all of the income gains after the recession’s official end, and the rest of the struggling underclass.</p>
<p>And America paid attention. A $15 an hour minimum wage, which many naysayers at the time thought was an unwinnable goal, is now a reality in <a href="http://time.com/3969977/minimum-wage/" rel="nofollow">some of the biggest cities in the country</a>. Seattle's $15 an hour minimum wage came as a result of former Occupy Seattle member <a href="http://www.socialistalternative.org/2014/01/31/lessons-kshama-sawants-historic-victory/" rel="nofollow">Kshama Sawant</a> winning a city council seat as a socialist and introducing a $15 an hour minimum wage bill.</p>
<p>In addition to recently pushing him to <a href="http://www.npr.org/2015/09/11/439381228/joe-biden-andrew-cuomo-push-for-15-minimum-wage-in-new-york" rel="nofollow">advocate for a $15 an hour minimum wage</a> in New York, former occupiers also pressured Governor Andrew Cuomo to renew the state’s <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/07/nyregion/cuomo-and-legislative-leaders-agree-on-tax-deal.html?_r=0" rel="nofollow">Millionaire’s Tax</a> and ban fracking <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/18/nyregion/cuomo-to-ban-fracking-in-new-york-state-citing-health-risks.html" rel="nofollow">across the state</a>.</p>
<p>Around the nation, Occupy’s other grievances were addressed with specific policy victories:</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>In Madison, Wisconsin, Occupy’s role in raising awareness about the plight of the homeless resulted in the city allowing land to be used by Occupy Madison to build a community of <a href="http://revolution-news.com/tiny-homes-for-the-homeless-an-occupy-madison-project/" rel="nofollow">tiny houses for the homeless</a>.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>The call for an end to oppressive student debt was met in Oregon, where <a href="http://www.wweek.com/portland/blog-33425-oregon_will_become_second_state_to_offer_free_community_college.html" rel="nofollow">free community college</a> is now being offered to working families. <a href="http://www.vox.com/2015/4/1/8328091/stanford-tuition-financial-aid" rel="nofollow">Stanford University</a> is also offering free college to students from needy families. Occupy Wall Street’s Strike Debt project managed to erase <a href="http://bluenationreview.com/occupy-got-3-8-million-student-loans-forgiven/" rel="nofollow">$3.8 million</a> in student debt.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>When Occupy hit the streets to protest wage theft by profitable corporations, Connecticut became the first state to force those corporations to pay those wages back at <a href="https://www.popularresistance.org/connecticut-requires-bosses-who-steal-wages-to-pay-back-double/" rel="nofollow">double the rate</a>.</p>
</li>

<p>After Occupiers joined the massive divestment campaign urging retirement and pension funds to sell off investments in the fossil fuel industry, more than <a href="http://insideclimatenews.org/news/20032015/map-tracking-academias-fossil-fuel-divestment" rel="nofollow">$50 billion</a> in fossil fuel investments have been sold, with pledges coming from at least 28 universities, 41 cities, 72 churches, and 30 foundations. The Guardian newspaper is also divesting fossil fuel investments from their <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/apr/01/guardian-media-group-to-divest-its-800m-fund-from-fossil-fuels" rel="nofollow">$1.2 billion portfolio</a>.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Some of the more notorious police violence toward Occupiers also resulted in civil lawsuits, simultaneously forcing more police departments to pay damages as a result of improper policing. Anthony Bologna, who famously pepper-sprayed two women who were kettled at an Occupy Wall Street march, cost NYC taxpayers <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/07/nyregion/new-york-city-reaches-settlements-for-6-pepper-sprayed-occupy-wall-street-protesters.html" rel="nofollow">$332,000</a> for his actions. Another group of protesters in New York was awarded <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/10/occupy-protesters-settlement_n_5480712.html" rel="nofollow">over $500,000</a> in settlements after police kettled and arrested them during a peaceful march.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Lt. John Pike, the UC Davis police officer who pepper-sprayed a group of seated protesters, was suspended and his superior officer was removed from command before the university paid out <a href="http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/26/14112860-university-of-california-to-pay-nearly-1-million-in-deal-with-21-pepper-sprayed-uc-davis-occupy-protesters" rel="nofollow">$1 million</a> to the students and professors who were pepper-sprayed. The Los Angeles City Council recently agreed to award Occupy protesters with a <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-city-council-settlement-occupy-20150401-story.html" rel="nofollow">$2.45 million settlement</a> as a result of the LAPD’s violent eviction of their encampment. Police everywhere are now under more pressure to handle protesters with dignity and respect, as their actions are costing taxpayers millions.</p>

<p><strong>Where Occupy Failed</strong></p>
<p>What the media – and, quite frankly, many occupiers – got wrong about Occupy Wall Street was that it was a movement based on the sole tactic of physical occupation of public spaces. Too often, the focus was drawn away from the issues Occupy was confronting, like income inequality, global capitalism, and the police state, in favor of mundane day-to-day issues like who would be able to solicit food donations, who was available to maintain night watch over the park, and the time-consuming, ineffective General Assembly process.</p>
<p>At Occupy Houston, where I spent most of my time between fall 2011 and spring 2012, organizers from Spain’s Indignados movement conducted a Q&A session with some of our organizers during the first week of the occupation. One specific instruction they gave was to not become dependent on the occupations themselves, but to voluntarily disassemble the camps after two weeks of occupation. They told us that any occupation lasting longer than two weeks would make the media’s coverage turn from talking about our protests of inequality and injustice to the minutiae of maintaining a permanent encampment.</p>
<p>We didn’t listen, and sure enough, the Indignados were right. After the first initial wave of excitement, it seemed as if a majority of the occupiers had left the encampments, uninterested in maintaining a permanent hold. Those who remained were mostly white males with little interest in making the movement more inclusive to women and people of color, alienating large segments of the population that the movement needed to attract to make any lasting change. Attempts to address Occupy’s unintentional reinforcement of white supremacy or misogyny were quickly shushed by mostly white and male General Assembly facilitators. I’ll reluctantly admit I was one of those white males of Occupy who was too proud to address the movement’s fundamental flaws in outreach.</p>
<p>Occupy became a bubble in which the few who remained looked upon those who wanted to move beyond the camps with disdain; likewise, occupiers who came to General Assemblies to stir up interest in organizing direct actions grew frustrated with the self-absorbed GA process of talking for hours, waving fingers, and getting nothing done. The conflict that had once been between the 99 percent and the elite turned into a rift between campers and protesters. But in all the ways OWS failed, the movements that it spawned learned from those mistakes and adapted.</p>

<p><strong>How Occupy Lives On</strong></p>
<p>The eviction from the encampments was one of the best things to happen to the Occupy movement, as it forced us to remove ourselves from the bubble we had created and take our organizing into our communities. The movements that followed Occupy started from the precedent it set, using tactics that went beyond simply picketing and marching. Occupy became known to a national audience whose consciousness has expanded since the protests that engulfed the country in 2011. It could be argued the public is growing more tolerant of popular movements that use militant nonviolence to get their point across.</p>
<p>Coalitions that formed between unions and occupiers allowed the Fight For $15 movement to sweep the nation, resulting in fast food and retail workers striking in as many as <a href="http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/17851/fast_food_workers_in_236_cities_pull_off_largest_strikes_yet_as_other_low_w" rel="nofollow">236 cities</a>, shutting down many restaurants and stores, and winning tangible legislative victories. The Black Lives Matter movement that began with Trayvon Martin’s death and exploded after the killing of Michael Brown brought on a wave of large scale protests and <a href="http://www.democracynow.org/2014/12/5/shutting_down_the_streets_thousands_protest" rel="nofollow">nationwide highway shutdowns</a> not seen since Occupy organized a <a href="http://www.pressherald.com/2011/11/17/occupy-protesters-march-nationwide-many-arrested/" rel="nofollow">similar campaign</a> in 2011. In 2013, thousands of middle school and high school students in Philadelphia protested education cuts by <a href="http://www.thenation.com/article/what-you-should-know-about-philly-student-walkout/" rel="nofollow">shutting down all of their schools</a> in a citywide walkout. Last year, <a href="http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/peoples-climate-march-attendance/" rel="nofollow">400,000 people</a> took over New York City to demand action on climate change. And days later, over 1,000 people <a href="http://www.democracynow.org/2014/9/23/flood_wall_street_100_arrested_at" rel="nofollow">shut down New York’s financial district</a> to protest Wall Street’s involvement in funding climate change.</p>
<p>It’s more evident now than ever before that protests have become more energized after Occupy set a new bar for protesting. And as seen in the numerous policy victories listed above, protest works. Occupy isn’t dead – it just moved on, as movements tend to do. The next mass cultural awakening will almost certainly borrow tactics and messaging from Occupy Wall Street, and so will the one after that.</p>

<p>A Muslim man in Egypt shot and murdered a Christian man in front of his own son. According to <a href="http://www.premier.org.uk/News/World/Persecution-forcing-Egypt-s-Christians-to-quit-their-country-says-UK-charity" target="_blank">the report:</a></p>

<p>Egyptian Christians are still being attacked and driven out of their homes because of their Christian faith, according to anti-persecution organisation Release International.</p>
<p>“One of the families we met was forced to flee after the father had been brutally gunned down in front of his teenage son. The pretext for the violence? A dispute over shop prices,” says Release Chief Executive, Paul Robinson.</p>
<p>“Another man we met was thrown into prison for trying to create a room for his Sunday school, which had been meeting in the open air. He and his children received death threats – and still are – and his father was detained and tortured.</p>
<p>“Despite changes to the constitution, freedom of religion is still way beyond the grasp of many Egyptians – especially in remote areas away from Cairo.</p>
<p>“What we’re seeing today is a modern day exodus from Egypt, as Christians are leaving the Middle East in droves. Yet Egypt’s Coptic community is still the largest Christian presence in the Middle East. It would be a tragedy if they felt compelled to leave. Release International is calling on Christians everywhere to stand with them this week in prayer,” said Robinson.</p>
<p>The Evangelical Fellowship of Egypt says persecution and terrorism has forced many of Egypt’s brightest and best to leave the country.</p>
