100,000 German Beekeepers Just Called For A Ban On GMOs

<p>Without bees, the future of Earth looks bleak...</p>

<p>Bees’ importance cannot be overstated. As TrueActivist <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/since-april-2014-bee-population-has-declined-40-60/"><strong>has shared before</strong></a>, the tiny, bumbling insects are <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/since-april-2014-bee-population-has-declined-40-60/">responsible for</a> <em><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/since-april-2014-bee-population-has-declined-40-60/">a lot</a> –</em> making them essential in the future of our planet.</p>
<p>Therefore, with massive bee die-offs (otherwise known as ‘colony collapse disorder’), it has been the plight of many scientists, beekeepers, and educated activists to do whatever it takes to ensure bees survive.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/this-unfortunate-new-finding-explains-why-bees-are-disappearing/">Some theories exist</a> as to <em>what is</em> causing colony collapse, such as Monsanto’s GMO crops, the insecticides used to treat them, and EMF frequencies from excessive technological use… but debate persists.</p>
<p>In wake of all the controversy, the German Beekeepers Association (DIB), which represents almost 100,000 beekeepers,  decided to take action by <strong>calling</strong><strong> for a nationwide ban on GMO cultivation</strong>. The news comes from a report published by the German NGO <a href="http://keine-gentechnik.de">keine-gentechnik.de</a>.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.gmwatch.org/news/latest-news/16240-100-000-german-beekeepers-call-for-gmo-cultivation-ban">GMWatch shares</a>, this call for a ban follows controversial legislation allowing EU member states to opt-out of GM cultivation, even though it has been approved at the European Union level.</p>
<p>As might be expected, many pro-GMO advocates are angry about the new law, calling it <em>“unfounded,</em>” and stating that it <em>“lacks scientific justification.”</em> Many non-GMO supporters – especially beekeepers – stand strong in their stance, however, and point to the many documented dangers  (and unproven suspicions) of genetically modified foods. They also bring to attention the known damage caused by herbicides and pesticides used to grow them, as well as the decimation of pollinating insects.</p>

<p>Beekeepers are hoping that the Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt (CSU) will soon administer a nationwide ban. At this point, they – and the rest of the world – need action to be taken to preserve the declining numbers of pollinating bees. So far, the Minister has argued in favor of allowing each state individually decide if they will ban GMOs.</p>
<p>Because bees can fly up to eight kilometers to pollinate and search for food, this is <em>far</em> from the compromise bee advocates are seeking. Even if one state banned GM crops, cross-contamination from crops of a nearby state could occur, further harming bee populations.</p>
<p>Beekeepers state that this would be <em>“environmentally and agriculturally unacceptable.”</em></p>
<p>In addition, the exposure of bees to biotech chemicals like glyphosate (which was <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/apr/21/glyphosate-probably-carcinogenic-pesticide-why-cities-use-it">determined to be ‘probably carcinogenic’</a> by the WHO’s IARC), would no doubt compromise their numbers even more.</p>
<p>We agree with the DIB’s statement: <em>“Bees know no borders.”</em></p>
<p>For this reason, it is <em>essential</em> individuals recognize the importance of bees and band together to demand a ban on GMOs in their own country. No doubt a ban so large will be tough to uphold, but at this point measures <strong>must</strong> be taken.</p>

<p>In an attempt to preserve endangered rhinos, British officials have now begun <em>inserting spy</em> cameras into rhino horns to deter poachers from hunting them. This news follows shortly after another controversial tactic: <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/conservationists-have-been-dying-rhino-horns-pink-to-ward-off-poachers-and-its-working/">dyeing rhino horns <em>pink</em></a> to lessen poachers’ interest and degrade the horns’ value.</p>
<p>With a rhino butchered every six hours in Africa, it’s easy to understand why conservationists are volunteering a multitude of different tactics.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/spy-cameras-fitted-endangered-rhinos-6099685">Mirror reports</a> that the British system also intends to utilize<em> </em>satellite tracking collars and heart-rate monitors to pinpoint attacks on rhinos. These devices will help alert rangers of a potential attack and allow helicopters to track the land animals’ movements.</p>
<p>Partnered with the ingenious ‘spy cams’, poachers will have <strong>no</strong> time to escape, and video footage will be captured to prosecute those who hunt illegally.</p>
<p>The system is soon to be trialed in South Africa and is also being adapted for elephants and tigers. With many of the world’s exotic and majestic species on the decline, no doubt more of these innovative solutions are needed to help <em>stop</em> the horrendous crimes being carried out against innocent animals, of which future generations will have to endure.</p>

<p><em>“A rhino is butchered every six hours in Africa,”</em> said Dr. Paul O’Donoghue from Chester University, who is responsible for developing the RAPID (Real-time Anti-Poaching Intelligence Device). <em>“The issues are many, but there’s far too much money at stake to believe that legislation alone can make the difference”</em></p>
<p>For this reason, he – and many others – hope the RAPID device not only grants the rangers enough time to stop an attack and take into custody those involved but deter poachers from even <em>considering </em>hunting in the future</p>

<p>What <em>is</em> clear is that <strong>something</strong> must be done. Since 2007, the poaching of rhinos has increased by more than <em><strong>9,000-fold</strong></em> in South Africa.</p>
<p>Because patrols cannot effectively cover every part of the vast landscape, it is easy for poachers to carry out their gruesome duty with little chance of being caught.</p>
<p>Said project director, Steve Piper: “<em>We hope to have a fully functional control centre established early next year.”</em></p>

<p>And he’s not alone; South African ecologist Dean Peinke stated that the new devices “<em>tipped the balance strongly in conservationists’ favour”.</em></p>
<p><em>“We simply don’t know where or when the poachers might strike. So to effectively patrol these areas requires an army but they would still find a gap,”</em> he said.</p>

<p>At least that’s the word on the street after Story County official Dean Haymore revealed that the electric vehicle/<a href="http://ecowatch.com/2015/05/01/elon-musk-tesla-battery/">battery</a> maker initially bought a thousand acres to start with, then recently swooped up another 1,200 acres and another 350 acres on top of that.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.technewstoday.com/24962-tesla-motors-inc-gigafactory-will-expand-up-to-24million-squarefeet-of-land/" target="_blank">Tech News Today</a> writes, Tesla “initially intended to purchase 10 million square-feet of land for its Gigafactory, but after recent plans of acquisitions, it seems Tesla will end up with more than 24 million square-feet of land, making it the largest factory in the world.”</p>

<p>It’s no surprise that Tesla is collecting some serious acreage, because it will need a lot of space for its ambitious plans.</p>
<p>“With a planned production rate of 500,000 cars per year in the latter half of this decade, Tesla alone will require today’s entire worldwide production of lithium ion batteries,” the company<a href="http://www.teslamotors.com/gigafactory" target="_blank">said</a>. “The Tesla Gigafactory was born of necessity and will supply enough batteries to support our projected vehicle demand.”</p>
<p>The factory, which will be powered by <a href="http://ecowatch.com/business/renewables/">renewable</a> energy, is gunning for an annual battery production capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours, according to the Tesla Motors.</p>
<p>Construction of the Gigafactory is well underway. <a href="http://www.hybridcars.com/tesla-almost-done-with-first-phase-of-gigafactory-construction/" target="_blank">Hybrid Cars</a> reports that the first construction phase of a 90,000 square foot building is nearly done and will soon be ready to install manufacturing equipment. <p><a href="http://ecowatch.com/2014/05/19/elon-musk-tesla-gigafactories/">As previously reported</a> by EcoWatch, Tesla is building its Gigafactory to not only produce enough lithium-ion batteries to change the EV market and drive down prices, the company is also planning to storm the solar energy sector. In its <a href="http://ecowatch.com/2015/05/05/elon-musk-tesla-battery-solarcity/">partnership with SolarCity</a>, Tesla is incorporating its batteries with SolarCity’s solar system to allow customers to store the excess energy created by the panels.</p>
<p>Tesla’s CEO makes it no secret that he’s planning on <a href="http://ecowatch.com/2015/03/03/tesla-installs-2000-superchargers-worldwide/">revolutionizing the energy grid</a>. “Our goal here is to fundamentally change the way the world uses energy,” Musk told <em><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-05-01/tesla-s-musk-unveils-batteries-for-home-businesses-utilities" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a></em>. “We’re talking at the terawatt scale. The goal is complete transformation of the entire energy infrastructure of the world.”</p>
<p>It appears that Big Oil and Gas are bracing for the clean energy revolution. Tesla’s very own Model S landed on the cover of <em>Alberta Oil</em>, an oil industry glossy, with the tagline “Hell on Wheels.”</p>

<p>The study, published in the <a href="http://www.asbmr.org/Publications/JBMR/default.aspx" target="_blank">Journal of Bone and Mineral Research</a> on Thursday found that the bones not only healed quicker, but were also stronger and more resilient against a repeated fracture, meaning the bones treated with marijuana were much less likely to break again.</p>
<p>The scientists behind the research believe that this is due to a connection between cannabinoid receptors in the human body and the stimulation of bone growth.</p>

<p>Dr Yankel Gabet from Tel Aviv’s Bone Research Laboratory told the <em>Times of Israel</em>: “We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing. Other studies have shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”</p>

<p>A number of studies have found medical advantages of marijuana. In a 2003 <a href="http://www.news.vcu.edu/article/Marijuana_and_its_receptor_protein_in_brain_control_epilepsy" target="_blank">study by Virginia Commonwealth University</a>, researchers said that marijuana could be used to help prevent epileptic seizures. Marijuana has also been linked to effective treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s.</p>
