Victims In USA And Australia Speak Out: Fracking Kills Dogs, Poisons Water And Causes Childhood Diseases

As the UK Government plots to fast-track fracking, activists in the USA and Australia talk about how the practice has destroyed lives, communities and the environment.

The UK Government is attempting to fast-track <a href="http://ift.tt/1JKcODF" target="_blank">fracking</a> by <a href="http://ift.tt/1MMyxsK" target="_blank">removing</a> a rule that says they must consult with local residents before corporations are allowed to start test drilling. 
There are proposals to begin the ecocidal practice of <a href="http://ift.tt/1JKcNzA" target="_blank">fracking</a> in various areas around the UK, but one place in particular is in immediate danger. The video from British campaign group 38 Degrees details how engineering giant Cuadrilla are to go ahead with plans to <a href="http://ift.tt/1HbKpm7" target="_blank">frack</a> in Lancashire, a pretty region in the north of England. As one resident points out, “what <a href="http://ift.tt/1HbKrul" target="_blank">happens</a> here will affect the rest of the UK.” <a href="http://ift.tt/1H1WYhD" target="_blank"><img alt="anon wear t-shirt" class=" size-full wp-image-24525 aligncenter" height="230" src="http://ift.tt/1IDEubY" width="300" /></a>
West Lancashire is a place of rolling green hills and flower-filled meadows, where sheep and cows graze happily in peace. Like many other places affected by <a href="http://ift.tt/1HbKpm9" target="_blank">fracking</a> in recent years, the four proposed sites are pretty, rural, and home to thousands of residents who have vowed to fight the Government and save their land. But will that be enough?

The Design Museum in London <a href="http://ift.tt/1K9UQdP">has chosen its Best Design of the Year</a>: a chip that replaces animal test subjects with a complex package of human cells. This radical invention has the potential to eliminate animal experimentation, and in effect save millions of species’ lives worldwide.
The lung-on-a-chip, called so because that’s what it actually is, was designed at Harvard’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. It may look simple, but the chip contains complex human cells arranged similarly to the way a lung works. In fact, it even breathes like a human does!
Scientists at the Wyss <a href="http://ift.tt/1HbKp5L">explained the far-reaching potential</a> of these chips. For example, they can use the lung-on-a-chip to introduce bacteria to the channels to mimic and infection, or introduce the chemicals one breathes in regularly to mimic air pollution and test its effect on the lungs. Or, they can even test new medications and determine the effects they’ll have on human physiology.

Malware King, Maker of 100 Banking Trojans, Is A Brazilian Student

A 20-year-old computer science student from Tocantins, Brazil, known online by the name of ‘Lordfenix’ and ‘Filho de Hacker’ (Portuguese for ‘Hacker’s Son’), has been revealed as the <a href="http://ift.tt/1ICFlJQ" target="_blank">maker of more than 100 banking Trojans, each valued at over $300</a>, by the security firm Trend Micro.

“Based on our research, Lordfenix has created more than 100 different banking Trojans, not including his other malicious tools, since April 2013. With each Trojan costing around R$1,000 (roughly US$320), <a href="http://ift.tt/1GMAj96" target="_blank">this young cybercriminal channeled his talent in programming into a lucrative, illegal venture</a>. Despite working alone and being only 20 years old, Lordfenix has managed to make his name known among his fellow criminals. His story—the young cybercriminal inflicting serious damage—is near-identical to that of the <a href="http://ift.tt/1MjNbrh" target="_blank">teens developing mobile ransomware in China</a>. He is also not the first solo operator we have noted this quarter. The likes of <a href="http://ift.tt/1AvRi1Z">Frapstar</a> (Canada) and the cybercriminals behind <a href="http://ift.tt/1zhLUcM" target="_blank">FighterPOS</a> (Brazil) and <a href="http://ift.tt/1J7gTyw" target="_blank">HawkEye</a> (Nigeria) are all individual players using basic malware to gain profit,” the firm wrote in a blog.

Ryan Gosling Urges Costco To Go ‘Completely Cage-Free For Its Eggs’

Actor Ryan Gosling, has openly <a href="http://ift.tt/1HbKrdU" target="_blank">called the conditions</a> found at Costco’s egg supplier “cruel”, and has stated that Costco’s  “deceptive labeling on cartons featuring graphics of birds living out in a green pasture,” is “appalling.”
Last month, the <a href="http://ift.tt/vpS6n2" target="_blank">Humane Society of the United States</a> released a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=98&v=ZeabWClSZfI" target="_blank">video</a> showing the living conditions of the egg-laying hens that supplies Costco. It was uncovered that Costco’s egg supplier uses abhorrent factory farming conditions—including small overcrowded cages, many of which contain the mummified corpses of those who could not survive—to raise the hens. In 2007, Costco made a public commitment to eliminate cage confined chickens from its supply chain, but detailed no timeline for this goal. <a href="http://ift.tt/1H1WYhD" target="_blank"><img alt="anon wear t-shirt" class=" size-full wp-image-24525 aligncenter" height="230" src="http://ift.tt/1IDEubY" width="300" /></a>
According to the Humane Society of the United States, “a Costco egg supplier cramming chickens into tiny cages, forcing birds to live in cages with the decayed, mummified corpses of their dead cage-mates, and engaging in other inhumane practices that are bad for animals and food safety.” Multiple studies have found that “confining hens in cages increases salmonella risk.”

However, the treatment of these hens is made all the more worse when Costco then labels their eggs with deceptive imagery. This imagery could ultimately be misleading consumers, as the actual conditions and treatment uncovered at Costco’s supplier are “in stark contrast to the happy hens and green fields depicted on egg cartons sold at Costco.”

Google Acts Against Sextortion, Bans Revenge Porn

Google has announced that it will now remove <a href="http://ift.tt/1Hmb9So" target="_blank">nude, sexual images and videos posted online without a user’s consent</a>. The request to remove revenge porn and explicit photos put online for the purpose of cyber-bullying can be made to Google just by filling up a form. Reddit, Facebook and <a href="http://ift.tt/1HESDCK" target="_blank">Twitter have already banned revenge porn</a>.
“We’ve heard many troubling stories of “revenge porn”: an ex-partner seeking to publicly humiliate a person by posting private images of them, or hackers stealing and distributing images from victims’ accounts. Some images even end up on “sextortion” sites that force people to pay to have their images removed.

“Our philosophy has always been that Search should reflect the whole web. A summary of the<a href="http://ift.tt/1H0qpkg"> events that took place in Greece</a>, and the specters of Uncertainty and Contagion about to be unleashed, was given by Slovakia’s finance minister Peter Kazimir in a series of tweets:
“The nightmare of the ‘euro-architects’ that a country could leave the club seems like a realistic scenario after <a class="PrettyLink hashtag customisable" dir="ltr" href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Greece?src=" rel="tag" data-query-source="hashtag_click" data-scribe="element:hashtag">#Greece</a> voted No today. We will not go gently into this good night. We stand united and we need to respond to this situation as soon as possible”
The now confirmed “No” vote means that the Greek people will not accept the current “additional austerity for more high-interest debt” deal, which would have been completely unexpected if you had only relied on mainstream fodder. This  has brought some cretins out of the woodwork;  JP Morgans’s Malcom Barr states that the bank’s latest take on Greece is that a Grexit is JPM’s “base case”… and it only goes downhill from there:
“Hollande and Merkel are to meet tomorrow night to discuss the issue, and as we understand it, the Eurogroup is scheduled to meet on Tuesday. We expect that a split is likely to emerge in the coming days….. Others will find it more difficult to return to negotiations with a newly emboldened Tsipras in short order….

Second, there are reports of an emergency meeting between the ECB, Bank of Greece and Finance Ministry tonight, and at the latest the ECB will likely have to take a decision about ELA support tomorrow (if not tonight)….It is extremely difficult for the ECB to justify increasing the region’s exposure to Greece at this point….
This suggests that what we see next will be a race between two forces: political pressure to move toward an agreement despite resistance from a number of northern European parliaments, versus the increasingly unpleasant implications of a dysfunctional banking system on the other.
Our base case is that the pressures coming from a dysfunctional banking system in Greece will shorten the time horizon to negotiate a deal to a handful of weeks.
