After kidnapping the girls, they would then sell the girls to rich Muslim men to be sex slaves:</p><blockquote><p>An Egyptian man has shared horrifying details about how Egyptian authorities are aiding networks of abductors who get paid by Islamic extremists to kidnap unsuspecting Coptic Christian girls, convert them to Islam and marry them off to Muslim men.</p><p>In an interview with World Watch Monitor, a former Muslim man known only by the letter "G" admitted that he used to work alongside a Salafist network of kidnappers before he left the Islamic faith.</p><p>G explained that although networks like the one that he was involved in have been around since the 1970s, they have now reached an all-time high during the era of Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.</p><p>According to G, the kidnappers receive "large amounts of money" from "Islamisation organisations" for carrying out the dirty deed of kidnapping innocent Christian girls so that they can be converted to Islam and married off.</p><p>The value of the reward for kidnapping a girl is greater when that girl is from a family of greater social standing or the "daughter of a priest," he added.</p><p>"The Salafist group I knew rented apartments in different areas of Egypt to hide kidnapped Coptic girls," G was quoted as saying. "There, they put them under pressure and threaten them to convert to Islam. And once they reach the legal age, a specially arranged Islamic representative comes in to make the conversion official, issue a certificate and accordingly, they change their ID."</p><p>Although abductions are illegal, G asserted that kidnappers are often aided by police officers in various ways in exchange for a piece of the financial reward.</p><p>"In some cases, police provide the kidnappers with drugs they seize. The drugs are then given to the girls to weaken their resistance as they put them under pressure," G explained. "I even know of cases in which police offered help to beat up the girls to make them recite the Islamic creed."</p><p>In a number of instances, G said, kidnappers would deceive Christian girls in order to abduct them.</p><p>"A Muslim boy tells a Christian girl he loves her and wants to convert to Christianity for her," G said. "They start a romantic relationship until one day they decide to 'escape' together. What the girls don't know is that they are actually being kidnapped. Most of the time they will not marry their kidnapper, but someone else."</p><p>G recalled one girl who was blackmailed into marrying one of her captors.</p><p>"I remember a Coptic Christian girl from a rich, well-known family in Minya," G stated. "She was kidnapped by five Muslim men. They held her in a house, stripped her and filmed her naked. In the video, one of them also undressed. They threatened to make the video public if the girl wouldn't marry him."</p><p>G stated that if all goes according to plan, girls are "forced into marriage with a strict Muslim." He added that some girls are shipped off to Saudi Arabia and forced to work as domestic slaves.</p><p>"Their husbands don't love them, they just marry her to make her a Muslim. She will be hit and humiliated. And if she tries to escape, or convert back to her original religion, she will be killed," G continued. "The most shocking thing is some girls find out that they are a second wife and are treated like animals. Some are sent to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf to work as domestic servants and they are exploited sexually and are seriously physically abused."</p><p>World Watch Monitor reports that one Christian girl who was kidnapped and forced into Islamic marriage is a 16-year-old named Marylin from the Minya province, who was lulled in and kidnapped by the "love" deception this past June. Videos have emerged online showing her forced conversion.</p><p>"Marilyn was seduced by a recruit of a Salafi organisation. She was involved in a love affair; he was then able to convince her to run away with him," an anonymous researcher told World Watch Monitor. "Marilyn isn't 18 yet. So even if she had agreed to go with Taha, in our law, this is clearly a case of kidnapping a minor."</p><p>Although Marylin's parents turned to the police for help, very little help was found.</p><p>"I filed a report in two police stations, and I gave the names of the kidnappers and the place where they hid my daughter," Marylin's father, Medhat Saad Edward, told World Watch Monitor. "But the police haven't arrested them. They didn't even get in touch with Taha's brother, who lives in the village and is in touch with Taha."</p><p>Boutros Khalaf, the family priest, told World Watch Monitor that the prosecution dropped Marilyn's case on Aug. 14.</p><p>"We've done everything we could to get our girl back. We even sent a complaint to President Sisi, the interior minister and many other important people," the priest said. "Her family lives in bitterness and pain, and we don't know what to do anymore."</p><p>According to G, "[k]idnappers of Christian girls rarely get arrested or brought to the prosecution."</p><p>"For instance, the police don't report it as a kidnap but say the girl 'went missing,'" G explained. "This way they cover up the crimes of those they see as their 'Muslim brothers.'"</p><p>Ebram Louis, an Egyptian human rights activist, told World Watch Monitor in 2014 that the police often don't act on Christian families' reports of kidnapping "because they are afraid of the militant groups."</p><p>"The police have not helped the families of the kidnapped girls at all," Louis stressed. "Moreover, some police officers told the families not to search for their kidnapped daughters, as they converted to the right religion."</p><p>The researcher who spoke with World Watch Monitor noted that kidnappings in Egypt occur on an almost daily basis.</p><p>"There is also a state of terror, panic and fear among all the Christians in our village. They worry about their children. No father will allow his daughter to walk on the street alone anymore," Khalaf stated. "He goes with her or sends her mother or brother to accompany her." 19 must-see movies from the fall film festivals

<p>The fall film festival circuit is where the year’s buzziest and most awards-worthy films often premiere, in cities from Venice and Telluride to Toronto and New York. Then, after they show up at the big festivals, they often fan out to regional festivals across the country, ready for movie lovers all over the place to catch a sneak peek ahead of their official release dates.</p> <p>Some of 2021’s biggest titles — Wes Anderson’s <em>The French Dispatch</em>, Denis Villeneuve’s <em>Dune</em>, Kenneth Branagh’s <em>Belfast</em>, and a lot more that made headlines out of this year’s fall festival circuit — will be everywhere soon enough. But it’s also important to take a step back and note the smaller films that might not garner as much buzz, but pack a punch nonetheless.</p> <p>This year I attended both the Toronto and New York film festivals and saw a huge selection of terrific movies from around the world. Below, I’ve listed 19 of those movies — independent productions, art-house gems, dramas, and comedies — that have flown further under the radar but are worth looking out for nonetheless. The stories they tell, and the ways they tell them, show just how vibrant cinema is as the movies come back to life.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Paul Verhoeven draws on the true story of a 17th-century nun for <em>Benedetta</em>, adapted from Judith C. Brown’s book <em>Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy.</em> It’s the story of a torrid affair between the devout Sister Benedetta Carlini (Virginie Efira) and a new novice, Sister Bartolomea (Daphne Patakia), who escapes a dangerous and abusive home situation by joining the convent where Benedetta resides. But that’s a relatively small piece of the puzzle. <em>Benedetta</em> is far more interested in power both secular and ecclesiastical, and in the ways that miracles — both real and imagined — might be harnessed to serve, and gain, those powers. The whole story is framed by Sassoon’s late-in-life conversion to Catholicism, amid his soured marriage and his son’s derision. There is no happy-go-lucky ending here, only the sense that an ineffable longing we have, to know and be known, is so precious and rare that most of us never find its fulfillment here on earth. But the film’s title lays bare its aims: To offer words of blessing over a man who never quite found the love he craved and, yet, kept looking.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Benediction</em> is awaiting US distribution.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>An early contender for one of my favorite films of 2021, <em>Bergman Island</em> is a layered and lovely film about the tension between making art and living real life, and how the two feed one another. Vicky Krieps stars as Chris, a filmmaker who travels with her partner Tony (Tim Roth), a more commercially successful filmmaker, to Fårö island for a creative retreat. Fårö is where the great director Ingmar Bergman lived and made his later work. As the pair spend time on the island, they start to be drawn apart; then, Chris’s new film starts to take shape, and we start to understand how life experience filters into her work. Written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve — and presumably based, in part, on her own experiences with former partner <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000801/">Olivier Assayas</a> — <em>Bergman Island</em> is like a diamond that you can turn over and over, seeing the light refract through each facet in new ways.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Bergman Island</em> opened in theaters on October 15.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Joaquin Phoenix stars in <em>C’mon C’mon,</em> the sensitive and huge-hearted new movie from Mike Mills (whose last film was <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2016/12/28/14088920/20th-century-women-review-annette-bening-mike-mills"><em>20th Century Women</em></a>). Phoenix is Johnny, an artist interviewing young people around the US about the future: what they hope for, what they dream of, what they fear. But when his semi-estranged sister (Gaby Hoffman) suddenly has to attend to an emergency, he ends up caring for his precocious and eccentric 9-year-old nephew Jesse (Woody Norman), and both of them learn a lot from one another. The premise of <em>C’mon C’mon</em> could easily swing into way-too-precious territory, but Mills’s steady hand and feeling for story rhythms, along with Phoenix’s performance, keep the ship on course. The result is a warm and winsome meditation on the ties that bind us to one another.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>C’mon C’mon</em> opens in theaters on November 19.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Ryusuke Hamaguchi directed and co-wrote the screenplay for <em>Drive My Car</em>, which is based on a Haruki Murakami short story. The film centers on Yūsuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a theater director who returns home one day to find that his wife Oto (Reika Kirishima), a TV executive, has died. Then time jumps forward, and Kafuku is directing a production of Chekhov’s <em>Uncle Vanya</em>, with each actor performing in their own language. Director Jonas Poher Rasmussen interviews his friend, Amin, who endured years of horror after fleeing Afghanistan with his family in the 1990s following the Taliban takeover. Flashbacks to Amin’s experiences are mixed in with his current uncertainties surrounding his relationship with his partner, Kasper, who desperately wants to buy a house, get married, and settle down. There, she meets Nina (Dakota Johnson), a young mother who dearly loves her daughter but finds the demands of parenthood are driving her to distraction. As Nina and Leda spend time together, their story starts to twine with Leda’s past (in which she’s played by Jessie Buckley), a time when caring for her own young daughters pushed her to her limits. <em>The Last Daughter</em> is a marvelously complex story, expertly crafted, with the freedom, loneliness, and claustrophobia of the main characters aptly evoked by the cinematography. Its splendid performances and keen sense of ambiguity feel so true to life that you might feel your heart catch in your throat.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>The Lost Daughter</em> will open in limited theaters on December 17 and begin streaming on Netflix on December 31.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>A surreal drama from the celebrated director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, <em>Memoria</em> stars Tilda Swinton as Jessica, a woman visiting her sister in Bogotá, Colombia. One night, she is awakened in the dark by the deafening sound of a bang. Yet nobody else seems to have heard it. What’s going on? It’s never totally clear, but solving a mystery isn’t the point of <em>Memoria</em>. Instead, it’s a slow, odd, hypnotic journey in which Jessica looks for answers, digs into life itself, and comes face to face with what it means to actually be a human inhabiting this planet. Claire (Ruth Negga) is married to a racist businessman (Alexander Skarsgård), who has no idea that his wife is not white. The film feels almost dreamlike, evoking a world in which the lines that separate friendship from desire, love from hate, and white from Black are more permeable than you might expect — a world a lot like today’s.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Passing</em> will open in limited theaters, then begin streaming on Netflix on November 10.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p><em>Portrait of a Lady on Fire</em> director <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/2/19/21137213/portrait-of-a-lady-on-fire-celine-sciamma-interview">Céline Sciamma</a> returns with a much smaller-scale but no less affecting film. Young Nelly (Joséphine Sanz), whose beloved grandmother has just passed away, is helping her parents (Nina Meurisse and Stéphane Varupenne) clean out the now-empty home where her mother grew up. Nelly is close to both of her parents, but is especially concerned about her mother. She longs to have one more day to spend with her grandmother. For most of its runtime, <em>The Power of the Dog</em> is confined to the big ranch that Phil and George (Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons) own and operate. George marries Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and brings her there, along with her waifish teenage son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Phil despises both of the ranch’s new residents. But people’s exteriors rarely match what they’re capable of inside. The film will keep you guessing as it morphs from a Western to a romance to something deliciously dark, a melodrama with an eerie bite and sweeping, craggy vistas.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>The Power of the Dog</em> will open in limited theaters on November 17 and start streaming on Netflix on December 1.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p><em>The Souvenir Part II</em> picks up right where 2019’s <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/5/15/18528575/souvenir-review-swinton-byrne-hogg"><em>The Souvenir</em></a> left off. Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) is reeling from the overdose death of her boyfriend (Tom Burke), and she decides, somehow, to process what happened through her thesis film. Meanwhile, her mother (Tilda Swinton) tries to help her get through the grief. <em>The Souvenir Part II</em> (based on writer and director Joanna Hogg’s own memories) is kind of a movie about making <em>The Souvenir</em>. But it’s also about the sly and surprising ways that art can help us cope, understand, and heal from what life throws our way. The film is Hogg’s gentle tribute to her younger, sometimes more foolish self, and it’s very funny, too. Haynes is no conventional director, and while he takes a fairly standard approach to the story — beginning with Lou Reed’s childhood on Long Island and moving forward from there — he weaves together more of a tapestry than a clunky paint-by-numbers documentary. <em>The Velvet Underground</em> is as much about the culture of 1960s New York City, dominated by Andy Warhol’s in-crowd and the work they made at his Factory, as the band itself. That’s to the film’s benefit. So she blows up her life and starts over, winding up in a relationship with Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie). That’s just the beginning. <em>The Worst Person in the World</em> tells Julie’s story in 12 chapters with a prologue and an epilogue — she is the main character in her own story, one that she’s writing as she’s living it. At the same time, she is also being pursued by a somewhat repulsive young man from the same village, but he’s the only boy who’s ever showed interest. When her older brother returns home from his job in a nearby city, the dynamic at home begins to shift. In the first story, one woman (Hyunri) tells her friend (Kotone Furukawa) about the man one of them recently met on a date; she doesn’t realize her friend is hiding a secret. In the second story, a young woman (Katsuki Mori) agrees to set a trap for her professor (Kiyohiko Shibukawa) at the behest of her boyfriend, but it doesn’t go as planned. And in the third story, a woman (Fusako Urabe) returns to her hometown for her high school reunion and meets with an old love, only to discover all is not as it seems. Donald Trump Questions Carson’s Faith, And One Thing We Must Recognize Is That The Seventh Day Adventist Religion Is An ...

I’m Presbyterian. Boy, that’s down the middle of the road folks, in all fairness. I mean, Seventh-day Adventist, I don’t know about. I just don’t know about</p> </blockquote> <p>Now, in all fairness, Trump never condemned or explicitly criticized the Seventh Day Adventist religion, but he did spark a discussion that needs to take place, as to the dangers and bizarre nature of Carson’s Adventism.</p> <p>What most Americans don’t know is that Ben Carson believes in the conspiracy theory that is collectively accepted by the paranoid 7th Day Adventists: that the US government will enforce the Sunday Sabbath. Here in this video, Ben Carson, in a 7th Day Adventist church, says that it will be conservatives who will persecute 7th Day Adventists in America for the cause of the Sunday Sabbath law (that would be you, Mr. Conservative):</p> <p><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='640' height='390' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/KUEwyAjbQC8?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&start=153&wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'></iframe></span></p> <p>Now if a law were to be passed making Sunday a day of obligatory rest and worship, I would see no wrong in this. Sunday is the day in which the Lord arose from the dead, and defeated death. What then would be so evil about this? Ben Carson would then go against conservative Christians for pushing for a Sunday Sabbath. This also means that Ben Carson believes that the Catholic Church is the Antichrist system that will usher in the Sunday law which — in the Adventist perspective — will be a sign of the End Times. According to Ellen G. White, the founder of the Adventist church:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1">The prophecy of Revelation 13 declares that the power represented by the beast with lamblike horns shall cause “the earth and them which dwell therein” to worship the papacy — there symbolized by the beast “like unto a leopard.” This prophecy will be fulfilled when the United States shall enforce Sunday observance, which Rome claims as the special acknowledgment of her supremacy.”</p> </blockquote> <p class="p1">Carson believes this apocalyptic conspiracy theory. While many protestants would agree with some of these sentiments, it is shockingly true that Carson completely blasphemes protestant theology. Let us look at some of the other dangerous and heretical beliefs of the Carson’s SDA church. For one, the SDA sect is anti-Trinitarian, meaning that it is against the Holy Trinity, or the theological teaching that God is three — Father, Son and Holy Spirit –; that the Father is of the same essence as the Son, and that the Holy Spirit is of the same essence as the Father and the Son, and that while they are separate Persons, they are nonetheless one. Joseph Bates, the one who developed the Saturday Sabbath theology within Adventism, and who convinced Ellen G. White and her husband, James White, of Sabbatarian Adventism, rejected the Trinity, saying:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1"> My parents were members of long standing in the Congregational church, with all of their converted children thus far, and anxiously hoped that we would also unite with them. <em>But they embraced some points in their faith which I could not understand. I will name two only: their mode of baptism, and doctrine of the trinity.</em> My father, who had been a deacon of long standing with them, labored to convince me that they were right in points of doctrine.… <em>Respecting the trinity, I concluded that it was an impossibility for me to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, was also the Almighty God, the Father, one and the same being.</em></p> <div id="attachment_87119" style="width: 256px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Joseph-Bates1.jpg"><img alt="Joseph Bates " class="size-full wp-image-87119" height="309" src="http://shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Joseph-Bates1.jpg" width="246" /></a> <p class="wp-caption-text">Joseph Bates</p> </div> </blockquote> <p class="p1">James White, Ellen G. For they believe that Jesus Christ is really the angel Michael in the flesh, and thus deify an angel. Ellen G. White</p> </div> <p class="p1">Carson agrees with with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who say in their own Watchtower doctrine:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1">Scriptural evidence indicates that the name Michael applied to God’s Son before he left heaven to become Jesus Christ and also after his return (<em>Aid to Bible Understanding</em>, Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, 1971, 1152).</p> </blockquote> <p class="p1">This evil and anti-Trinitarian heresy is most easily refuted by St. Paul himself, who declares that Christ is greater than the angels, and that the Father never spoke to the angels as He did to His Son. (Hebrews 1:1-14) </span></p> </blockquote> <p class="first-line-none top-1">This entire Scripture explicitly refutes Carson’s heresy that Christ is Michael the Archangel, regardless of whatever sophisms they try to utilize to explain theses verses away. God speaks to His Son — God the Son — in ways that He would never use when speaking to angels. This alone refutes the claims of the heretics.</p> <p class="p1">Ellen G. White was also a false prophet. She supported the false prophecy of William Miller who said that Christ would return in 1843, and then come back a second time in 1844. When Christ did not return Ellen G. White came to Miller’s defense and said that while the date was wrong, the event was simply misinterpreted: Christ was not to return on the specific dates given, but was to enter into the Holy of Holies in Heaven and begin judging the world and acting as a mediator. In her own words:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1">Had Adventists, after the great disappointment in 1844, held fast their faith … receiving the message and proclaiming it to the world, they would have seen the salvation of God, the Lord would have wrought mightily with their efforts, the work would have been completed, and Christ would have come ere this to receive his people to their reward … it was not the will of God the coming of Christ should be thus delayed. <i>(Selected</i> <i>Messages, Book 1, p. 68)</i></p> </blockquote> <p class="p1">Such a belief belittles the sacrifice of the Crucifixion, and it was this doctrine that would set off the SDA movement. In other words, the SDA cult was founded for the purpose of defending the false prophet, William Miller.</p> <div id="attachment_87122" style="width: 259px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/William_Miller.jpg"><img alt="WIlliam Miller " class="size-full wp-image-87122" height="364" src="http://shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/William_Miller.jpg" width="249" /></a> <p class="wp-caption-text">WIllima Miller</p> </div> <p class="p1">White also said that the reason why Christ has not returned was because Adventist did not give away enough of their money to her ministry, and that if they did give enough, the Second Coming would be ushered more quickly:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1">If they will be faithful in bringing to His treasury the means lent them, His work will make rapid advancement. Many souls will be won to the truth and the day of Christ’s coming will be hastened. <i>(Counsels on Stewardship p. 45)</i></p> </blockquote> <p class="p1">Has Carson has never exposed the abuses by his own cult. Abuses are very rampant within the SDA. In a survey taken by the Oregon Conference of SDA Family Life Department, these were the results:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1">24% have been divorced or permanently separated.<br /> 30% were physically abused at home before age 18.<br /> 43% were verbally or emotionally abused at home before age 18.<br /> 16% experienced incest at home before age 18.<br /> 13% have abused drugs or alcohol.<br /> 37% have lived with a drug or alcohol abuser.<br /> 7% have attempted suicide.<br /> 27% have had suicidal inclinations.</p> </blockquote> <p class="p1"> Moreover, Carson has never exposed the Nazi history of his cult. the great majority of Adventists in Germany were in favor of Hitler, because of “his personal dedication and his abstinence from tea, coffee, alcohol and meat, practices shared by the Adventists, [therefore] he was welcomed as a savior.” In the Adventist town of Friedensau, 99.9% of the population voted in favor of the Nazis. The departmental secretary of the Adventist South German Union Conference, M. Busch, was in support of Hitler and “approvingly quoted Hitler’s statement in <i>Mein Kampf</i>  that ‘for the political Fuhrer all religious teachings and arrangements are untouchable.’” The Adventists were banned by the Nazis, but this ban was lifted once the cult declared their allegiance to Hitler. While there were Adventists who righteously risked their lives to defend Jews, the official Adventist movement did get rid of any of its members who had Jewish backgrounds.</p> <p class="p1">The Adventists were also in favor for the Nazi eugenics policy, and supported the sterilization of those considered “unfit” for German society. According to <a href="http://www.history.ucsb.edu/projects/holocaust/Research/Proseminar/corrieschroder.htm#_ftn1" target="_blank">one historical statement</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p class="p1">The mentally weak, schizophrenics, epileptics, blind, deaf, crippled, alcoholics, drug addicts – all were to be sterilized. ‘This law,’ an article in the Seventh-day Adventist paper <i>Jugend-Leitstern</i> said, was ‘a great advance in the uplifting of our people.’  (R. Sulzmann, “Erbkrank,” <i>Gegenwarts-Frage</i>, vol. 9, nr.1, 1934, p.8, quoted by: Sicher, “Seventh-day Adventist Publications and the Nazi Temptation,” 19)</p> </blockquote> <p class="p1">The Adventists also believed that by their health laws and teachings they were bringing Germany into a new world order. Adolf Minck, soon to be president of the German Adventist Church, said, “We are not unprepared for the new order. After all, we have helped prepare the way for it, and helped to bring it about.”</p> <p class="p1"> Hulda Jost, the leader of the Adventist Nurses Association, worked heavily with the Nazis and became a propagandist for the Nazis in the United States. While she was in the US in 1936 she spoke for a  pro-Nazi organization called Friends of the New German, in which she said that “Hitler doesn’t want war,” and that Germany was simply rearming to defend itself against Russia. When asked about Hitler’s persecution of the Jews Jost said, “Hitler has merely wanted to take leadership away from the Jews but he doesn’t want to hurt them.” During the war the Adventists expressed nothing but support for Germany’s aggressions, saying “in total war there can only be total commitment and sacrifice.” The Adventist church in Germany issued an instructional circular stating that “God had commanded: ‘Submit yourselves, for the Lord’s sake, to every authority,” thus using Scripture to justify obedience to Hitler’s regime.</p> <p>The president of the East German Conference, W. Mueller, has been quoted as <a href="http://www.history.ucsb.edu/projects/holocaust/Research/Proseminar/corrieschroder.htm#_ftn1" target="_blank">saying</a>:</p> <blockquote> <p>Under no circumstances did any Adventist have the right to resist the government, even if the government prevented him from exercising his faith. Resistance would be unfortunate because it would mark Adventists as opponents of the new state, a situation that should be prevented.</p> </blockquote> <p class="p1"> <a href="http://www.history.ucsb.edu/projects/holocaust/Research/Proseminar/corrieschroder.htm#_ftn1" target="_blank">After the war</a> the Adventist church believed that it was justified in its support for the Third Reich. It was not until 1948 that they began to investigate Adventist support for the Nazis. But this was not because of some sense of guilty, rather it was because an American military official, Major J.C. Thompson, chief of  the Religious Affairs Section of the American Military Government in Berlin,  sent a letter to the Adventists asking them why they had not removed all of the Nazis who had positions within the SDA sect. Thompson also added that while the Catholics put up immense opposition against the Nazis, the Adventists did not. The General Conference then began to ask Nazi Adventists to step down, and this greatly upset the German Adventists, especially because it was the General Conference that helped them appease the Nazis in the first place.</p> <p class="p1">But out of all of the evils of the SDA, one of the most disturbing was that of Roch Theriault, the leader of an Adventist group that lived in French Canada. Theriault rejected Catholicism and joined the SDA and went through its rehabilitation course to help him quit drinking. He became a very enthusiastic advocate for the SDA’s holistic classes to help people leave smoking and drinking, and which promoted more “healthy” living. He started going door to door passing out SDA literature, and soon he accumulated a group of followers. He convinced all of them to drop out of school, telling them that Christ was returning soon and education would mean nothing then.</p> <p class="p1">Theriault and his followers went on to a retreat to Sainte-Marie, in the Beauce region, about 65km south of Québec City, where they established the “Healthy Living Clinic,” an alternative medicine venue where you could get organic foods and holistic literature to help you cure <em>any</em> ailment.</p> <p class="p1">Without getting in all of the details, some very sadistic and violent things happened within this cult. Theriault got three of the female members pregnant, and he had one Guy Veer to look after the “animals,” that is, the children in the cult that were not of his seed. One night a two year old child named Samuel was crying and Guy arose and yelled at the child. He then picked the child up by the throat and punched him several times. The child’s head was seen “flopping around on his neck”. Theriault, the cult’s leader, took a pair of scissors and cut his penis off. Months later Veer was found guilty in a tribunal conducted by the cult for some infraction. He was found guilty and his punishment was castration. They placed him on a table and Theriault cut his testicles off.</p> <p class="p1">In 1985 one of the female members, Gabrielle, put her five month old baby in a wheelbarrow outside in the middle of the winter. It was 14 degrees F. In a few hours the child froze to death. Theriault hated the child and said that it had the “mark of the devil” and that killing it would be only good. The actions of this group were so diabolical and horrifying. Theriault even had his own son, Roch Jr., molested, and he himself would rape the other children. He would also teach the children that God lived under the earth, because flowers grew from under the ground, and at times God demanded blood sacrifice. So, he and the children would sacrifice a goat and one of the children — one of his daughters — bathed in its blood. They would also conduct rituals that involved upside down crosses and horrific sexual acts.</p> <p class="p1">He would inject a 94% ethanol solution into his followers’ stomachs. In one instance he took one of the women, Solange Boilard, after she complained of a stomach ache,  punched her in the stomach, jammed a plastic tube up her rectum to perform a crude enema with molasses and olive oil, then cut open her abdomen, and ripped off part of her intestines with his bare hands. Another member sowed her stomach up with a needle and string, and another member shoved a tube down her throat and blew. She died the next day.</p> <p class="p1">This is the fruit of the SDA: cult abuse, heresy, murder and the support for Nazism. The best documentaries of 2021 and how to watch them

And in recent years, there’s been a resurgence of interest in the form.</p> <p>Great documentaries challenge not just what we think about the world but the way in which we look at it, and force us to think about ourselves in new ways. They ask us to reevaluate the very act of watching a movie, or think about the roles we perform in our daily lives.</p> <p>So it’s no wonder that so many of this year’s best films were nonfiction. Below I’ve collected 16 of the best documentaries, which explored everything from groundbreaking artists and musicians to democracies and surveillance society to the difficult act of healing from trauma, and a lot more.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>China is undergoing a drastic transformation, and across the country, workers are chasing the “Chinese dream” — upward mobility and affluence. <em>Ascension</em> is a riveting portrait of the ladder they’re climbing. Director Jessica Kingdon captures, in an observational style with an engrossing score, the labor that Chinese workers perform, starting with factory work (jeans, patches for jackets, sex dolls) and moving through everything from bodyguard and butler training courses to aspiring social media influencers. Messages of loyalty and responsibility toward country and company mix with individualistic aspirations for personal branding and wealth accumulation. Those are the questions Theo Anthony (<em>Rat Film</em>) tackles in <em>All Light, Everywhere</em>, a sprawling essay film about “blind spots” in the technologies we trust (or don’t trust) to keep us safe and the illusions they too often depend upon. Things did not exactly go as planned, but a film crew was on hand to document the sessions, and 81 minutes of the resulting footage went into their 1970 film <em>Let It Be</em>. But the other 59 ½ hours has been sitting around till now, as Peter Jackson culled it down to an eight-hour, three-episode documentary that culminates in the band’s famous rooftop performance. It centers on three teen girls in a Texas military town and one summer in their lives, but it’s not a joyride. Directors Isabel Bethencourt and Parker Hill only gradually reveal their subject: the pervasiveness of sexual assault in not just the girls’ lives, but also in the lives of their entire age cohort. They talk obliquely about the older men — often friends of their parents — who molested them when they were children. They discuss rape with painful familiarity. It’s to <em>Cusp</em>’s credit that there’s still a sense of magic and possibility throughout the film, as if the girls have some hope for their futures. But <em>Cusp</em> makes it clear that sexual assault is a problem of culture, not of individuals — and that the fault lies with generations that don’t take action to change it.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Cusp</em> is streaming on <a href="https://showtime.i7cdw9.net/c/482924/698418/10655?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.showtime.com%2F&subid1=vox">Showtime Anytime.</a></p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>It’s rare to see animation as the main medium in a documentary, but <em>Flee</em> uses it to great effect. Director Jonas Poher Rasmussen interviews his friend, Amin, who endured years of horror after fleeing Afghanistan with his family in the 1990s following the Taliban takeover. Flashbacks to Amin’s experiences are mixed in with his current uncertainties surrounding his relationship with his partner, Kasper, who desperately wants to buy a house, get married, and settle down. The effect of his past is a strong one, showing how even after finding safety and relative stability, Amin’s previous experiences will never stop reaching their long fingers into his present. <em>Flee</em> is heartbreaking and moving, and hard to forget.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Flee</em> is playing in limited theaters.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>You could say filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky is unconventional. His last film, <em>Aquarela</em>, was <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/8/27/20803742/aquarela-interview-victor-kossakovsky">a portrait of water</a> set to a soundtrack by the Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica; his new film <em>Gunda</em> swaps out the massive scope and ear-splitting music for an intimate portrait of a pig and her piglets, two cows, and a one-legged chicken. There’s no dialogue; we just watch the animals go about their lives while we experience the quietly dawning recognition that these animals have real lives. Joaquin Phoenix is an animal rights activist — as you may recall, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=joaquin+phoenix+animal+rights&oq=joaquin+phoenix+animal+rights&aqs=chrome..69i57j0j46j0l4.7033j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8">he championed veganism</a> when accepting his Best Actor Oscar for <em>Joker</em> in 2020 — and his interest in <em>Gunda</em> is no surprise. It’s a recognition of animals’ creatureliness and a quiet argument for their dignity.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Gunda</em> is streaming on <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=nOD/rLJHOac&offerid=852731.793&type=3&subid=0&u1=vox">Hulu</a> and available to rent or purchase on digital platforms.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>It’s hard to imagine any pandemic documentary being more piercingly insightful than <em>In the Same Breath</em>. The film from director Nanfu Wang — who grew up in China but now lives and works in the US — takes a fearless approach to the often willful misinformation spread by multiple governments as the Covid-19 pandemic began to take hold in early 2020. It’s a daring exploration of how the Chinese government repressed information about what was really happening. But it also exposes how other governments — most notably in the US — contributed to the ongoing misinformation crisis and made the entire situation much worse than it needed to be. The result is a chilling, truly absorbing film with big implications for the future.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>In the Same Breath</em> is streaming on <a href="http://voxmediapartner.go2cloud.org/aff_c?offer_id=2&aff_id=1&source=vox">HBO Max</a>.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p><em>Listening to Kenny G</em> is a documentary about the smooth-jazz sax crooner that sets out to ask a few barely answerable questions: Why do people love Kenny G? Why do people hate him? And what do their responses to him say about taste, preference, and art? In films like <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/4/16/18311449/hail-satan-penny-lane-interview-review-satanic-temple"><em>Hail Satan?</em></a> (about the Satanic Temple) and <em>The Pain of Others</em> (about women who believe they have Morgellons disease), director Penny Lane has consistently refused to take the easy route.</p> <p>There are no pat answers in her movies, and <em>Listening to Kenny G</em> is no exception. The sax player himself is the film’s main interviewee, but he’s flanked by music critics who point out all his shortcomings. What right do they have to tell someone who walked down the aisle to a Kenny G song that they’re wrong? That’s the question <em>Listening to Kenny G</em> raises and doesn’t try to answer outright. Instead, it focuses on a vital secondary question: Is there a dividing line between “I like this” and “This is good”? And should we care?</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Listening to Kenny G</em> is streaming on <a href="http://voxmediapartner.go2cloud.org/aff_c?offer_id=2&aff_id=1&source=vox">HBO Max</a>.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>When Larry Krasner was elected as Philadelphia’s district attorney in 2018, he became very powerful — and took many Philadelphians by surprise. Krasner had been a civil rights lawyer for decades, often finding himself in opposition to the DA’s office, and the new position came with some real challenges. <em>Philly D.A.</em> is an eight-part documentary series about Krasner’s new role, and it’s thrilling and intriguing to watch. The first two episodes, which premiered at Sundance, are engrossing, fast paced, and clear about the stakes of the DA office trying to implement a new agenda while retaining public trust, and the challenges of trying to turn a ship in a new direction.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Philly D.A.</em> is streaming on Topic, which offers a free seven-day trial.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p><em>President</em> is a truly incredible achievement and an illuminating look into how authoritarians seek to keep people from participating in a “democracy.” Director Camilla Nielsson returned to Zimbabwe, the site of her 2014 film <em>Democrats</em>, to follow the 2018 presidential campaign of Nelson Chamisa, president of the opposition party. The election was a hotly contested one, with layers of history and politics specific to Zimbabwe, but <em>President</em> manages to draw out those layers to create a compelling portrait of what a stolen election really looks like. It is a thrilling, enraging film, and its intimate access to Chamisa and his advisers is extraordinary.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>President</em> is playing in limited theaters and will be released on digital platforms on February 18.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Indelible, gutting, and hopeful, <em>Procession</em> is a documentary unlike any you’ve seen before. The filmmakers, led by director Robert Greene, reached out to six men in the Kansas City, Missouri area who were abused as boys by Catholic priests and clergy. Rather than proceeding as an exposé, Procession is a collaborative project in healing, as each of the six men creates and films traumatic memories in a drama therapy-informed quest to find ... well, what, exactly? That’s what they’re exploring: the meaning of healing, the ways we perform to cope and to crack ourselves open, and the possibilities, such as they are, for redemption. It’s a must-see.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Procession</em> is streaming on Netflix.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Lance Oppenheim was 22 when he first visited the Villages, America’s largest retirement community, which sprawls across three counties about 70 miles north of Orlando. He ended up filming there to craft the documentary <em>Some Kind of Heaven</em>, a stunning directorial debut and the kind of work that far more experienced directors would be proud to have made.</p> <p><em>Some Kind of Heaven</em> follows several subjects: Reggie, who is experimenting with psychedelics, and his long-suffering wife, Anne; Barbara, who is looking for love after the death of her husband; and Dennis, who is living out of a van and looking for a wealthier woman with whom he might strike up a relationship. The film at times feels like a dreamscape rather than just an observational portrait. It’s clear that the relentless positivity of the Villages takes its toll on residents, but it’s also a glimpse into an idealized version of America, and the fantasy at its core.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Some Kind of Heaven</em> is streaming on <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=nOD/rLJHOac&offerid=852731.793&type=3&subid=0&u1=vox">Hulu</a>. Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)</em> was one of the biggest crowdpleasers of the year at its Sundance debut in January, and that’s no surprise. Ahmir Thompson — better known as Questlove, the drummer and frontman for the Roots — directed the film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, sometimes dubbed “Black Woodstock.” The staggering concert, held over a series of weekends in Harlem’s Mount Morris Park, featured everyone from Sly and the Family Stone to Nina Simone to Stevie Wonder to Mahalia Jackson. The events were filmed, but the footage sat in a basement for 50 years. Now it’s compiled into a documentary about a pivotal moment in Black cultural history, and the result is absolutely infectious to watch.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>Summer of Soul</em> is streaming on <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=nOD/rLJHOac&offerid=852731.793&type=3&subid=0&u1=vox">Hulu</a>.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Certainly the year’s most charming movie, <em>The Truffle Hunters</em> unfolds as a series of vignettes documenting the lives of several older men and their dogs. They live in Piedmont, northern Italy, where they spend their days hunting for rare and costly white Alba truffles in the forest. Nearly every frame of <em>The Truffle Hunters</em> is wide and steady, focusing on the men as they discuss business, talk to their beloved canines, root around in the dirt, and take part in a simple way of life that, it’s clear, is slipping away. (We do occasionally get a dog’s-eye view, too.) It’s a sweet and simple movie with a healthy dose of bittersweet wistfulness for a fading world, and it’s beautiful.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>The Truffle Hunters</em> is streaming on Starz and available to purchase on digital platforms.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Todd Haynes directs a highly satisfying documentary about the legendary Velvet Underground, the rock band that formed in New York City in 1964 and came to embody an important moment in the history of rock. (Plus, they rock.) Haynes is no conventional director, and while he takes a fairly standard approach to the story — beginning with Lou Reed’s childhood on Long Island and moving forward from there — he weaves together more of a tapestry than a clunky paint-by-numbers documentary.</p> <p><em>The Velvet Underground</em> is as much about the culture of 1960s New York City, dominated by Andy Warhol’s in-crowd and the work they made at his Factory, as the band itself. That’s to the film’s benefit. Using the screen as a window and collaging together images and footage with audio from interviews, Haynes evokes a mood and an era; he reminds audiences that some success comes from talent and hard work, and some of it just comes from being in the right place at the right time.</p> <p><strong>How to watch it:</strong> <em>The Velvet Underground</em> is streaming on <a href="https://tv.apple.com/channel/tvs.sbd.4000?itsct=tv_box_link&itscg=30200&at=1001l7uV&ct=vox">Apple TV+</a>.</p> <div> <div>[embedded content]</div> </div> <p>Israeli director Ra’anan Alexandrowicz has focused his past films on questions about Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, but in <em>The Viewing Booth</em>, he confronts the act of viewing itself. 130 Countries Agree to Biden-Backed 15% Global Minimum Tax

<div><img class="ff-og-image-inserted" src="https://api-assets.infowars.com/2021/07/BidensignGetty7121.jpg" /></div> <p><strong>Following weeks of intense talks involving diplomats from more than 130 countries and jurisdictions, Washington has succeeded in winning international backing for a new global minimum corporate tax framework that, if implemented, would constitute the biggest shakeup in international tax rules in a century.</strong></p> <p>The world took a critical step toward implementing the deal, which involves implementing an international minimum corporate tax rate in exchange for the US sharing the tax spoils from hundreds of the biggest American multinationals. The plan is a critical piece of Biden’s “Build Back Better” strategy, which involves passing trillions of dollars in “infrastructure” spending that will be partially offset by the biggest tax hikes in decades.</p> <p>The deal, brokered with the help of the OECD, follows years of missteps and other setbacks for the organization, which has been trying to reform international tax rules for years, even before the US threw its support behind reform. The framework received the backing of the G-7 and G-20. Now, finance ministers from the G-20 are expected to sign off on an “agreement in principle” during a meeting in Venice, Italy set for next week.</p> <p>Both China and India have reportedly given their blessing to the deal, eliminating the last bit of resistance from within the G-20.</p> <p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who was tasked with overseeing the US-led effort, <a href="https://twitter.com/SecYellen/status/1410624480263745539">tweeted Thursday</a> that the deal would soon put a stop to “self-defeating international tax competition, lowering our corporate tax rates only to watch other nations lower theirs in response.” Read the full thread below:</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote" readability="32"> <p>“Today is an historic day for economic diplomacy. Holdouts like Bermuda and other traditional tax havens (including Ireland, which has benefited tremendously from its low corporate tax rates) are anxious about hiking taxes, worrying that joining the deal could seriously destabilize their economies.</p> <p>To be sure, implementing the deal will take years, and there’s still no guarantee that it will make it to the finish line.</p> <hr class="wp-block-separator" /> <p><strong>Update (1224ET):</strong> In a rare scoop, the Irish Times just reported that Ireland was one of nine countries that didn’t sign on to the global corporate tax deal that was reportedly struck Thursday afternoon in Paris following weeks of negotiations. Ultimately, 130 countries signed on, while the remaining nine countries – including Ireland – refused (the OECD has 139 members in total).</p> <p>As <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/ireland-rejects-us-plan-global-minimum-tax-will-keep-125-rate">we have reported</a>, the Irish government has long been wary of the new framework. The Irish Department of Finance even calculated that agreeing to it would cost the country some  €2 billion in annual tax revenue as it would lose its advantageous 12.5% minimum corporate rate.</p> <p>With the lowest corporate tax rate in Western Europe, Ireland’s participation in the deal is critical. A small group of the Inclusive Framework’s 139 members have not yet joined the Statement at this time.  The remaining elements of the framework, including the implementation plan, will be finalised in October.</em></p> <p><em>The framework updates key elements of the century-old international tax system, which is no longer fit for purpose in a globalised and digitalised 21st century economy.</em></p> <p><em>The two-pillar package – the outcome of negotiations coordinated by the OECD for much of the last decade – aims to ensure that large Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) pay tax where they operate and earn profits, while adding much-needed certainty and stability to the international tax system.</em></p> <p><em>Pillar One will ensure a fairer distribution of profits and taxing rights among countries with respect to the largest MNEs, including digital companies. It would re-allocate some taxing rights over MNEs from their home countries to the markets where they have business activities and earn profits, regardless of whether firms have a physical presence there.</em></p> <p><em>Pillar Two seeks to put a floor on competition over corporate income tax, through the introduction of a global minimum corporate tax rate that countries can use to protect their tax bases.</em></p> <p><em>The two-pillar package will provide much-needed support to governments needing to raise necessary revenues to repair their budgets and their balance sheets while investing in essential public services, infrastructure and the measures necessary to help optimise the strength and the quality of the post-COVID recovery.</em></p> <p><em>Under Pillar One, taxing rights on more than USD 100 billion of profit are expected to be reallocated to market jurisdictions each year. The global minimum corporate income tax under Pillar Two – with a minimum rate of at least 15% – is estimated to generate around USD 150 billion in additional global tax revenues annually. Additional benefits will also arise from the stabilisation of the international tax system and the increased tax certainty for taxpayers and tax administrations.</em></p> <p><em>“After years of intense work and negotiations, this historic package will ensure that large multinational companies pay their fair share of tax everywhere,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said. “This package does not eliminate tax competition, as it should not, but it does set multilaterally agreed limitations on it. It also accommodates the various interests across the negotiating table, including those of small economies and developing jurisdictions. It is in everyone’s interest that we reach a final agreement among all Inclusive Framework Members as scheduled later this year,” Mr Cormann said.</em></p> <p><em>Participants in the negotiation have set an ambitious timeline for conclusion of the negotiations.
